Martin Luther King Jr: War As An Enemy of the Poor
In response to this week's outrageous Pentagon claim, unbacked by fact or logic, that Martin Luther King Jr. might have supported the Afghanistan War, Brave New Foundation offers as reality check MLK's passionate 1967 speech at Riverside Church where he proclaimed the Vietnam War - or any other – "an enemy of the poor," adding facts and figures that make it more monstrously true than ever. Shame for stealing the man's words, values and vision.
"A true revolution of values will lay hand on the world order and say of war, 'This way of settling differences is not just.'... A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death."

Show Alltwisting the words of the dead is such a christian thing to do.
MLK on many occasions condemned corporate control of government and therefore would not have condoned US support of the Taliban for the past 30 years or the invasion of Afghanistan after a mostly Saudi crew pulled the 9/11 stunt.
The 1/17/11 50th anniversary of Eisenhower's speech warning the world of the dangers of the military industrial complex needs to be combined with the celebration of MLK day since King also warned us of this evil that is turning the US into a 3rd world nation.
Thanks to MLK, that Uncle Tom progressed from the cabin to the Pentagon, there perverting the legacy of the man who made it all possible for him.
as has been pointed out numerous times, king was not a perfect human being. he succumbed to the usual temptations on a personal level, and for many forfeited complete respect toward the ideals he championed.
but he was one whose efforts and energies were directed tirelessly toward human rights, using nonviolent civil disobedience well beyond what others considered "just" or "proportionate" to the transgressions suffered at the hand of a malicious oppressive ruling class (and the rigid complacency of an equally oppressive population - fearful of looking too closely at the world).
what would he be saying now? is there any doubt?
"A nation that continues to spend more money, year after year, on military defence (my only quibble; it should have been aggression)than on social uplift programs is approaching spiritual death". A ton of meaning in a short paragraph and Vietnam was aggression also. Tony
This is from the same pious crowd who can't quite absorb the meaning of 'turn the other cheek' and 'forgive your enemies,' much less 'thou shalt not kill.' Of course the Christopublican hypocrites at the Pentagon have to distort MLK's words and what he stood for -- if the sheeple were let in on the horrible truth, there would be no more US War Machine, and this idiot would be looking for a new job.
They (pious war hogs) have been twisting Jesus' words for two thousand years. They have plenty of practice. You very seldom hear "turn the other cheek". It's just not "realistic". War is reality, and oh, by the way, I have a few dozen missiles for sale at a very reasonable price.
MLK doesn't stand a chance.
Well put.
Another disgusting use of Martin Luther King's legacy is the hoax known as "Letter to an Anti-Zionist Friend" which has been used to prop many a Zionist narrative:
---
The false letter was quoted by Ariel Sharon before the Knesset on January 26, 2005. It has also been cited by the Anti-Defamation League in testimony before the United States House of Representatives. Other prominent individuals quoting the letter include Natan Sharansky (in the November 2003 issue of Commentary) and Mortimer Zuckerman (in the September 17, 2001, issue of U.S. News & World Report).

MLK may be more of a saint than Pope John Paul II!
Let us ask ourselves: why does America have military troops in 175 countries around the globe?
Here is a fine link to a few of MLK's pertinent views that ordinarily get exposed:

On this day that is dedicated to a great American leader, let us remember that the political assassinations of the sixties and seventies, JFK, King, Malcolm, RFK, and the attempt on George Wallace when he treatened to split Nixon's vote, guaranteed the Nixonian and Bushian warfare state that we have come to live in.

Chuck, I always wondered about that too and just assumed that the damage it did to the poor was an unintended consequence. Now I am convinced that the primary intention for war, and especially for the outrageously absurd expendinturies to which you refer is the transfer of wealth from the poor to the rich.
The fact that we have no money for schools, health care, the homeless, is just a by product of the rich believing that they must own absolutely everything, and if they don't they have failed in some sort of crusade to carry out a divine plan which they alone bear the responsibility for executing.
Now I am convinced that the primary intention for war, and especially for the outrageously absurd expendinturies to which you refer is the transfer of wealth from the poor to the rich.
You got it!
Power over others is their true intent, money is their tool.
One could only imagine how different things would be if we had a man of MLK's character and conviction in the White House today.
"A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death."
And that insight was offered more than 40 years ago. Now the zombies are milling around after the wake, stone-deaf to any sort of cogent advice or caution. And it's pedal-to-the-metal all the way. Whether we go over the cliff or into the wall hardly matters at this point. Long live the King!
America went from I Have A Dream to I Have A Taxcut.
Orwellian pentagon at it again with their downside-up spin. Stop your stupid wars you stupid boys.
MLK was saying grow up your low-based thinking/behaving. We CAN live in peace and celebrate our differences both.
MLK knew what our country was doing.
Between 1961 and 1971, the US Army sprayed some 80 million liters of Agent Orange over 30,000 square miles of southern Vietnam. The deadly chemical is named after the orange stripes on the barrels in which the defoliant was stored by the army.
By the end of the Vietnam War in 1975, nearly 4.8 million Vietnamese people had been exposed to Agent Orange, resulting in 400,000 DEATHS.
And these were not even combat deaths. It's time we just traded the stars and stripes for our true banner, the Jolly Roger.
LBJ had Hoover do MLK in because MLK wouldn't become a war apologist. The hook was legislation to lower poverty rates and civil rights. MLK knew that it was temporary and wasn't true reform. Without a change in the Jolly Roger mindset, the other stuff wouldn't take. Look around. He was right. He wouldn't bite. They killed him for his integrity.
And the Jolly Roger is flying from every military base and pentagon contractor in the USA.

My local homeless-feeding group had this day off.
I bet Dr. King would rather they kept feeding the poor in his name.
