Nearly 20 black families in a Detroit neighborhood got racist - not to mention seriously badly spelled - letters Tuesday telling them to move out or get killed, the latest in a string of racially ugly events that included a cross burning and Aryan Nation flyers found in Easter eggs. Welcome to Obama's post-racial America.
"We tired of u n------ keep movin in are neighborhood!!" read the letter. "you need to move across 8 mile. we just need to start killing you n------ one by one!"

Show AllSeriously? With all the true life villains out there (Xe/Blackwater, unaccountable corporations, out of control Pentagon spending, corporate polluters, et.al.) scary brown people are the problem? The very idea would be laughable if those moronic racists weren't so scary themselves.
Good point. While Europeans seem to have outgrown some of their racism unfortunately USA (Turtle Island) still harbors European descendants of the neanderthal type. Not content with murdering Indigenous peoples and stealing their land they had to compound this enormous crime by another: dragging Africans clear across the ocean to work this stolen land. And today both black and native folks continue under the racist boot. Remarkably, black folks, despite all that is thrown at them, have created something of enormous worth, originality and beauty: Jazz music. Hats off to them! As for these hooded devils in the skin of man your hate is approaching your twilight one way or another.

Your point? And this "gansta rap" is being mimicked by white kids today just as white kids have followed black popular music in other generations. It may be unlovely "music" or "poetry" but it does not follow that the birth of Jazz is diminished by it only that one needs to ask why this rap has become so popular in these times with both black and white kids.
I smell professional provocateurism afoot; leads to martial law; leads to the empire calling on their blackwater thugs to "restore order" (the empire's order). It's those ridiculously misspelled signs/letters/etc...same MO, whether it's fools shilling for "W", or the O-man (am I right Perry Logan?)or these letters, or "morans" signs. Could be highly trained operatives deliberately coached to "look stupid", while shaping events to advance the empire's goals. They know how to push our buttons.

But I _do_ agree that the _real_ problem is corporate greed _and_ people who play race-baiter to exploit prejudices.

Believe it or not, as the economy gets worse, I expect that incidents like this will become more commonplace. Traditionally, us black folk have been the scapegoats for everything bad that happens in this country. The 'veneer' of civilization that Amerika placed on itself will be shed like the skin of a snake.
Personally, I believe that we need to all come together and fight the system. That being said, I don't see that happening and so, to my black brethren and sisteren, keep your powder dry and don't shoot until you see the whites of your enemies eyes.
I, as a white man, am sickened by this. Sickened. If it comes to violence, and if you don't mind, there are a lot of us white folks that would be proud to fight by your side.

I think you are right. If it gets bad enough, I hope you will consider seeking refuge in Norway, we do take in refugees, although not from the US thus far. Considering what is happening over there, I think that may change though. At any rate, as a former USAér, I know African Americans are mostly great people that I will welcome to my home country of Norway. I have already invited some that I know personally to do so. -Not to discourage you from fighting the system, but please be realistic about when it is might be time for the fight to be more effectively fought beyond the borders...
I just finished reading "Fire on the Mountain" by Terry Bisson with an introduction by Mumia Abu Jamal. The content addresses "What if John Brown had won at Harper´s Ferry? The classic science fiction novel of a black utopia in the American South." Interesting reading and very critical of the current white supremacy.
Doesn't change the fact of racism, but in many areas the economy is being blamed on the Mexicans, at least by uneducated idiots who think the Mexicans are "stealing our jobs".
In reality, the huge loss of jobs is not even the trend by companies to send jobs overseas to places where they can exploit the underpaid workers. It's actually automation that has cut deepest into the work force ... so it still all comes back to the money-grubbing factory owners. A friend of mine works for a company that used to be the largest employer in the state outside of the state government. He's running 5 machines by himself, where there used to be a machine operator for each one.
A strong national economy is based upon many strong local economies. We no longer have those strong local economies in America. Consolidation, automation and corporate greed have destroyed them.
Buy local whenever you can. Go to local merchants, and stay out of the "big box" stores whenever possible. (I _will_ not enter a WalMart for _anything_.) That helps build a local economy.

They are stealing our jobs. Just yesterday I tried to get a $1 per hour job picking lettuce in 95 degree heat, and the overseer at the plantation told me all the jobs were already stolen by greedy Mexicans. Thanks a lot, Pedro. Now I'm stuck with my crappy investment banker job.

Your response is interesting. Now, just because brown people are the latest scapegoats it does not follow, all too tragically, that black folks do not continue to be scapegoats. A little research into our prison system, the conditions of inner cities, pay differentials, housing discrimination, the fact that blacks are suffering a depression instead of a "recession", elevated health risks such as heart disease/high blood pressure to name a few will amply bear this out. I also wonder if this recent discrimination against Mexicans isn't also highlighting discrimination against indigenous people. Take a trip to Arizona sometime and witness the condition of Native Americans on reservations. Just when the racists thought they had indigenous people safely out of view up pops the devil.
Your ideas about buying local have merit however you really need to see how blacks are exploited by local merchants in their city neighborhoods by inflated prices and poor quality groceries. So, in conclusion, it would have been better for all had the Puritans remained in Europe and fought for their religious freedom there. As for Columbus, too bad the Taions did not wipe them all out instead of being so innocent.
In my long life, I've spent a lot of time in working class bars, and I'm here to tell you that 90% of Mrkns are racist, and the other 10% are bigots. Me, although I try very hard not to be, I'm at least a bit racist--I'm slightly more wary of gangs of black teens than of white teens, although, to tell you the truth, I don't like teenagers of any stripe (or hue).
Does that make you an "ageist"? ;)

I loathe teens because I was a high school teacher of English for 30 years and took it as my duty to bore them to death, at which task I was the nonpareil.
Racism trumps everything in America. Of course people have become more adept at hiding it but with a black president and an economic downturn it is becoming more obvious and everyone can see that it is as strong as ever and is in fact an enduring feature of American culture.
One thing is pretty obvious; The racism here in the United States has been so deeply ingrained into the very fabric of our society and culture from day one that having an African-American President doesn't account for much.

Not sure about pedantic, but do think it's an incorrect label. They are black Americans. I do however have a good African American friend she is white with blue eyes and blond hair.
There have always been light-skinned "black" people who have been able to pass as white, in racist society. There was a girl that I really liked in high school, and 40+ years later, looking at her photos in our yearbook I realize that she might have been one of those people.
There are also white Africans.
We don't have a "black" president ... he's racially mixed. We need to stop looking at him as BLACK and accept him as AMERICAN.
That _might_ be a good starting point for changing some of the racial slurs that are getting thrown around.

This is the upper class's "ruling elite's" way of continuing to keep us "unwashed masses" from being angry at the very core (the ruling elite) of the problem. Was this done by two kids sitting in a dark basement? Or what? Broke open the piggy bank to buy the stamps? Or, as INB suggests, is this a political operation? The degree of organization and the numbers involved are important to know.
Detroit, over 80% Black, doesn't seem a likely place for white supremacists to take control, or for the KKK to hold too many public rallies. There seems to be more -- or less -- than meets the eye in this.
I started school at a multi-national school in a foreign country, so I learned diversity in kindergarten. (My best friend was from Holland and one of my friends was from Pakistan.) I would rather work with some of the racially and ethnically "different" people with whom I've been associated over my working life, than with bigoted Whites of "my own kind" ... because they're NOT of "my" kind.
My mother grew up in Oregon at a time when it was _very_ racist, but she had no prejudice. Today, urban Oregon is one of the most diverse places I've ever lived, but you still find prejudice in the small towns and rural areas ... particularly against the natives.
And not too long ago one of you "progressives" tried to argue with me that racism doesn't exist in the US and that it's mostly related to class differences. Ha! At the base of Gringo culture is hatred and violence. Not just 1 hour ago I met another meat-head gringo who thinks like all of you do. Today's American is yesterday's Nazi.

Wouldn't sound so ridiculous - so staged. Either way, meant to grab the white trash (rich and poor). Meant to help start a civil war : police and army (with wmd) against the relative pop-guns of the populance.

I had believed that Australia had little 'racism'. It has much and its being fanned.
My favorite thing to say to folks is that the white side of my family's roots consist of a signer of the Declaration of Independence and KKK members while the black side of my family came from Cherokee Indians who traveled the Trail of Tears and African-Americans who helped integrate schools.
Does the KKK practice the one drop rule as well?

They just wiped out their 'enemies' in death camps. And they DID make slaves out of millions of Jews, homosexuals, gypsies, slavs, and others they considered inferior. They literally worked them to death. As awful as the Confederate flag is, and no matter how stupid the people who rally behind it, there is no white-washing what the German people under the Nazis did. Do I think Americans could do the same thing if given a good enough 'reason'? Sure.
Well, when you consider how many millions of Africans were wiped out in those slave ships, on the islands to break their spirits and later on southern plantations, and the horrors of slavery--they were ONLY kept "physically" alive because they were valuable property and in fact bred as if cattle--such as having family members torn from you to be sold to distant plantations, the horrible tortures where the backs of slaves, under the lash, were "sculpted" into trees or forced to wear horrid torture collars, etc., lynchings and castrations, not to consider THIS is white-washing. And blacks continue to be targets, Obama not withstanding.
Do not wonder any further if America "could do the same thing if given a good enough 'reason'" they have already done so this very thing to Native Americans since they wanted to clear the very land of them. Hell, Hitler got the idea of concentration camps from the US "Indian Reservations". This Nazi face IS that devil hiding behind that white hood. One and the same. Birds of a feather.
The Confederate flag (or lag) has been besmirching this country for over a hundred years. The Nazi flag was just there for a few years. I wonder how many blacks have been murdered/hung/burnt over the years in the name of this flag that belongs to a people who lost a civil war. Too bad the Union did not keep the federal army in the south until every vestige of white supremacy was wiped out forever! The reason it didn't? Well---politics, and the fact that the north was just about as racist as the south. But at least the Union Flag claimed to represent freedom and equality. The Confederate flag never made any such claims.
