Muslim in America
While mainstream media coverage of the Times Square almost-bomber has predictably focused on the fact that he's a Pakistani Muslim, no one has noted that the hero of the day - the first street vendor to notice the smoking car - is also a Muslim. Aliou Niasse, a Senegalese immigrant selling framed photos of New York yet, told the t-shirt vendor next to him.
"I thought I should call 911, but my English is not very good and I had no credit left on my phone, so I walked over to Lance." – Niasse

Show AllNot being an American, 'hero' is not the word I would use, but Mr. Niasse did what everyone should or would have done. This attempt makes very clear that people who plant bombs just don't care who their victims might be. The car could have blown up with a bunch of muslim school kids passing it. I wonder if that would have mattered in any way to the wannabe bomber?
You make some good points.
It seems like the bomber was not a political terrorist; there is no manifesto, no list of political claims or requests, just a sad lonely disaffected wannabe spree killer who hated people and wanted the limelight.
How do you know that?
Dan May 5th, 2010 4:22 pm -- Today's NYT says, "There is no doubt among intelligence officials that the barrage of attacks by C.I.A. drones over the past year has made Pakistan’s Taliban, which goes by the name Tehrik-i-Taliban, increasingly determined to seek revenge by finding any way possible to strike at the United States." See, http://bit.ly/df6v37.
And you think that is some sort of justification for this sort of terroism?
manning,
My question was directed at Morticia.
Dan May 6th, 2010 10:51 am -- Why are we quibbling? The big news is that the drone attack chickens are coming home to roost. Compared to other grievances, drone assassinations really don't amount to much. But they have a terrific terroristic punch (they are used to terrorize, something never mentioned by Obama), thus inspiring attacks against us beyond those inspired by attacks using conventional weapons.
Manning - We aren't quibbling.
I agree with the point you made.
My original question was in response to Morticia, who did not make a very convincing case that the Times Square car bomber was "just a sad lonely disaffected wannabe spree killer who hated people and wanted the limelight."
It was posted out of sequence and perhaps appeared to be in response to Horrified's comment -- with which I also agree.
Dan May 6th, 2010 2:26 pm -- Thanks. And I agree with your comment about Morticia's.
I don't think it was a random act. He was a witness to first hand drone attacks in Pakistan that drove him to do what he did while he was visiting Pakistan. Please don't call this random killing spree. It was a revenge attempt.
The mindless killings that are really happeninig are in Afghanistan and Pakistan at the hands of the US military. What would you do if your family or close relatives were a subject of these drone attacks?
American "Christians" would be wise to remember Christ's story about the Good Samaritan.
"Police said they believed that the intention was to create a fireball in one the city’s busiest areas, which was teeming with thousands of tourists and theatregoers on Saturday night"
Ooooh... Sounds like an attempt to shock and awe, to me..
Dafoe
There are Muslims and there are Muslims as is the case with every religion. We have that shining beacon of low grade christianity Pat Robertson or "killer" as he is know in certain circles, whose pronouncements should have landed him in jail but for being a friend of that other christian gwb.
Good for Niasse for doing the right thing.
From what I read, the bomb was essentially a dud.
Muslims in America are the new bogeyman. Just look back to the 1950's and 1960's and there was a communist bogeyman under every bed, and we had to stop them in Vietnam or the " Red Menace " would take over the world, like a row of dominos ( we need to fight the terrorists over there or we will have to fight them over here ) but since that doesn't work anymore for the MIC to scare the hell out of the American sheeple, communists have been replaced by Muslims and terrorists. One mans terrorist is another mans freedom fighter. The U.S.A. is considered the # 1 terrorist in the world by many, many countries and the majority of Muslims just want to be left alone by America but the MIC loves to stir the hornets nest to keep their hidden agenda of war profits in tact. They talk peace; when they really want no peace. Goebbels would be proud!
As Muslims we do not need to integrate into American society. By integrate I mean give up our religion and religious rites. The only thing we need to do is be good citizens, respect those around us by treating them kindly and with dignity, and obey the laws of the land so long as they are just. I think in many cases we have done this well. Much better I might argue than the Evangelical Christians that might have deeper roots here than us.
ghazi, one would respectfully submit that by simply being good citizens and respecting those around you you are already integrated into american society. that should be the only criteria.
so welcome to american society. may you always be a good citizen which means dissent when necessary and may you be treated as well as you treat others.
america needs more good citizens to be active in society.
and welcome to aliou niasse as well.
Ghazi
Integrating into American society, becoming a real American means not having to give up your religion or any religious rite as long as it doesn't step on someone elses religion.
The very first thing you must do to become a citizen is renounce your allegiance to any other country, obey the law, respect others morals and customs within their own spheres and try not to be a burden on others. Thats about all anyone can ask.
So you are integrated if you think of yourself as an American.
And welcome to you.
Well I hope I'm an American. I was born here after all. I'm like a 9th generation American or something.
It would be nice if they are taking the trouble to make evident that the terrorist was a Muslim, they would bring up the fact that the hero, yes hero was a Muslim too.
It takes courage to report your suspicion
And God forgive anyone that believes there is any kind of excuse for this kind of terroism or for this wanna be murderer.
The word "hero" is so overused and misused that it has, to me, become meaningless.
Any mundane thing done can make one a "hero" nowadays.
I have an acquaintance who is a fanatic Muslim hater. He tells anybody who will listen (sadly, too many) that Islam is not a religion, but a vast terrorist plot to take over the world; that the Holy Qur'an is not a religious text, but a terrorist handbook. He will not sit in the same room with a Muslim.
His reason is that a relative of his was killed while visiting Jerusalem, by a bomb set off by a Muslim.
I asked if the people of Oklahoma who had lost friends and relatives should hate all Christians because McVey was a "Christian?" "Oh, that's different entirely."
I pointed out that Islam is the solace to around a billion people, as his Christianity is to him, and that most Muslims are just like everybody else. They want to be able to work, to support their families, have a roof that doesn't leak over their heads, access to decent food and clean water, and opportunities to educate their children. Most are as appalled by all this violence as the "Christian" man-in-the-street; perhaps more so as Islam is a non-violent religion.
Sadly, too many Americans seem to be swayed by his sort of rhetoric and do not want to be confused by facts.
