A new Pentagon report
on Afghanistan finds that violence is up almost 90 percent,
roadside bombs have spiked 240 percent, only a quarter of the country
supports Hamid Karzai's government and corruption is as out of control
as ever - but things are looking promising, say officials. Positively
Orwellian.

"We have the beginnings of the potential for real change." - a
senior U.S. defense official.
