A new Rasmussen poll has 57% of people concerned the Fort Hood shootings will prompt a backlash against Muslims. Good thing: The insanity has started. Approached by a bearded man in a robe, Florida Marine reservist and apparent beefcake Jasen Bruce attacked him with a tire iron, chased and pinned him, and told 911 he'd captured a terrorist - who was a Greek Orthodox priest asking for directions. Bruce said the guy yelled "Allahu Akbar"; clearly he should have yelled, "You are a racist idiot!"
"That's what they tell you right before they blow you up," Bruce told police.

Of course the nation will look upon this incident with regret because the victim was a Christian, non-Arab, non-Asian man who was "mistaken for a terrorist". However, when it is a Muslim guy and/or an Arab or Asian or African man, suddenly most people seem to believe that "he must have done something to deserve it" and have little to no sympathy for the plight of those who are likewise "mistaken for terrorists".
'Cause you know, the prevailing wisdom is that those Christians could never be terrorists, and those Mozlehms should be considered such.
I thought marines had to have IQ's at least above 30. Guess, not.
If you can prove fear, even chasing another is legal; and this gentleman's comment at his time of arrest reflects honest perceptions of safety, life threatened. (But this IS Florida, not Alabama).

Horrible incident, but it's definitely good to read that the Greek priest will come through this okay.
However, while I appreciate his position to not press charges, and his reason for this choice, the government should definitely press the charges, itself. Otoh, if it'd help someone as dumb as Jason Bruce is to wake up, by not being charged, at all, then I guess not charging him, not sentencing him to prison anyway, would probably be the better choice. The question is whether or not this is what'd happen if no charges are pressed, if he's not convicted and then sentenced to prison, which is the normal route taken?
The incident was caught on video camera, so the Greek priest wouldn't or shouldn't need to testify.
I appreciate the Christian reason he employed and for providing some really good inspiration with this. It's a choice made in truth of fellowship with Jesus of Nazareth and it's good to read or learn of this when we get a lot of negative about the church(es); getting far more negative than we get for good. And this choice of his, and his reason, causes me to pause about saying that people should demand that Bruce be charged and convicted. Otherwise, I wouldn't hesitate.

Good luck with this one though. He seems to be the kind of soldier that Henry Kissinger is quoted saying to the writer of the unofficial biography on him, who says this book is based on truth, not fiction. What did Kissinger say, according to this book, when asked what he thought or thinks of soldiers? "Dumb animals" only useful for serving the interests of the "elites", who Kissinger clearly counts himself among.
That's a falsehood for many soldiers, as IVAW, Courage to Resist, f.e., have been illustrating; in addition to the apparently tens of thousands more dissenting soldiers who just have chosen to stay out of public view, fearing what would happen to them if they came out of AWOL hiding. They foolishly, sadly accepted to follow the orders of war making at first, but came to realise that it had been a wrong decision, to obey.
Seems like Jason Bruce is truly the "dumb animal" kind; so dumb that he lied in three absurd ways about the incident with the Greek priest, and so additionally dumb that he refuses to apologize for what he violently did. And I think enough U.S. Marines will be embarrassed by the actions of this ... idiot, say.
It's good to read in the Tampa Bay article that another U.S. Marine said Jason Bruce is a jerk, or whatever the precise term used is.

And then we need to consider Bruce's lawyer, this sick s.o.b. A lawyer who blantantly lies as he did should be immediately listed for disbarrment! He seems to think that he could profit for his client, and himself, by exploiting the anger in perhaps many people in the U.S. about church paedophiles. Thankfully, both he and his client are proven to be outright LIARS.
Or did the lawyer only repeat the claims of his client without conducting any verifications, first? If that's what he did, then he should not be disbarred, perhaps, but should definitely be seriously reprimanded for his serious incompetence and negligence.
Bruce is a dishonourable member of the military and his lawyer is a dishonourable member of the lawyers association, or whatever organisation or body he's member of as a lawyer.

When I read about this story the other night, I was reminded of that Monty Python skit about the altered Bulgarian-to-English phrasebook. That's how absurd this story is.
Obviously the Greek Orthodox priest was saying "I am lost, can you help me find my way?" but the marine was hearing "We will attack your infrastructure and bring the Great Satan to its knees, you infidel dog."
The most unfortunate aspect of this story is that it will play well overseas and it will drive home the view that ALL Americans are just goddam crazy.

My son actually had a co-worker brag about cursing a turban wearing Arab after 9/11. My son controlled his urge to curse the idiot for his stupidy, because the man wearing the turban was a Sikh, which is a group from India. As part of their religion, the adult men wear turbans.
