As Portugal Goes...
Heartbreakingly, Maine failed last week to legalize same-sex marriage, but it sounds like Portugal will succeed. Its new socialist Prime Minister, working with the Left Bloc and Communist Party, are reportedly set to approve gay marriage as one of its first bills.

Show Allput it this way.
despite all the self-congratulatory claims as the bastion of "open society" and "inclusivenss" and "attracting immigrants" as the worlds' greatest "melting pot" -- the USA
1) attracts immigratns that TEND to be SOCIALLY conservative after they have satisfied their "economic gains"
2) it is indeed a SOCIALY BACKWARD society in comparison to its size and claims about "freedom" and "competition of ideas".
3) the underlying attraction of the USA - to both its citizens born and immigrants IS
it's SOCIAL BACKWARDNESS because it is a way for them to have their tiny little disparate "conservative" "traditions" that are themselves BACKWARD.
protected mainly by what they think or perceive is their "economic security"
which incidentally is fraying at the seams - big time...
so - when you have a combination of a collapsing social and economic web - and a backward mentality attraction
what do you get?
a VERY dangerous "melting pot".
Portuguese is a very beautiful language. Think I'll have to learn it. I may be immigrating. I predict that in the next few years, there will be a lot of people immigrating FROM the United States.
and learning it also opens up brazil for you - which incidentally is the biggest and rising power in south america.
the brazilians i've met are really wonderful . they are truly as has been reported : warm and very open.
Not to mention some islands off the coast of West Africa.
"I predict that in the next few years, there will be a lot of people immigrating FROM the United States"
Yeah, heard that before W was elected the second time. Everyone was gonna move to Canada. I have yet to hear of someone who actually did.
Well, I've heard of plenty of gay people who have immigrated to Europe, Latin American, and even Southeast Asia. I, for one, am getting very tired of American homophobia. I know some very nice breeders, but still----.
Plenty tried to, but Harper kept kicking them out.
Many Americans emigrate to Canada every day a good thing as long as they leave thier bibles and guns behind. Harper to his shame failed to allow deserters sanctuary in this country he did this as a means of displaying solidarity with right wing christian primitives and republican wanabe's who form his support base. This is an anomaly in Canada it is not based on the strength Conservatism but rather on the uninspired poor quality of leadership of the liberals under Micheal Ignatieff at this time under normal circumstances the Liberal Party of Canada is thought of as "the natural governing party". It was the Liberal Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau who over 40 years ago quite famously said that government has no right in the bedrooms of the nation, he was also the first to use the term "A Just Society" when he described his vision of Canada, Mr Obama quoted him often and quite effectively to help him win office.
Kudos to the Portuguese for having the hearts, the brains, and the progressive sensibilities so lacking in much of the American populace.
