Just Say No

Mazel tov to the courage of Ha'aretz, which has a fine fiery opinion piece by Gideon Levy, titled "America, Stop Sucking Up to Israel." Calling his home "a country whose language is force," Levy blasts the "sticky-sweet praise" heaped on Israel by Obama, "even though he has spent nearly a year fruitlessly lobbying for Israel to be so kind as to something, anything" to halt the occupation and restart the peace process.
"Before no other country on the planet does the United States kneel and plead like this... Now is the time to say to the United States: Enough flattery. If you don't change the tone, nothing will change."

A friend who stays quiet when criticism is necessary is not a friend.
When Israel fails to acknowledge its failures, it is others' duty to speak out. Just pampering is not helpful -- on the contrary.
Israhell is running out of luck (and money):
UK student union boycotts Israeli goods.
Published today (updated) 02/11/2009 16:16 MaanImagesBethlehem - Ma'an - Following a landmark referendum, students at the UK's Sussex University in Brighton this week voted to boycott Israeli goods.
The decision comes in line with the international Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign, which calls upon Israel to respect international law and end the occupation of Palestinian territory.
The referendum received messages of support and thanks from Jewish and Israeli academics and non-governmental organizations that oppose Israel's occupation. Author and scholar Norman G. Finkelstein described the referendum result as "a victory, not for Palestinians but for truth and justice."
According to Iyad Burnat, head of the Popular Committee Against the Wall in Bil'in, "We hope even more people all around the world will follow by our example so that we can put an end to the Israeli occupation and dismantle the apartheid wall."
I've been boycotting Israeli goods since 1967.
Ha'aretz, especially Gideon Levy, is often much better and more truthful on Israeli issues than any newspaper here.

I wonder at times if CommonDreams' left hand knows what its right hand is doing!
The Levy column was published at CommonDreams yesterday, and it's still "above the horizon" on the main page.
I fully concur with the "mazel tov"! and the views expressed by Levy. But it's puzzling to have virtually the same thing put up for discussion in two (or more) places-- especially since comments thread administrators seem to frown upon duplicating comments.
Abby, you might as well have simply added this "comment" to the Levy article comments thread. Just say "no gratuitous duplication".

It's too bad the Obama administration backed off of it's initial position! I was hoping that by taking that position they were indicating that the US was going to be more even-handed, instead what they have proved is that we must have a grassroots movement for DIVESTMENT of Israel in order to bring any rational even-handedness back! As the Israeli's continue in their genocide on the Palestinian people, at what point don't Americans recall "our" own history and the decimation of the Native Nations that once occupied these shores when the settlers came?!
proves Ha'aretz is anti-semetic!
No, no, no, not anti-semitic. Self-hating Jews.
Gideon Levy is the best antidote for anti-semitism.

What does "mazel tov" mean?
It's Hebrew for "congratulations" -- I think the exact translation is something like "good luck has occurred".
Speaking of which, this country will need a lot of good luck to occur if it continues this pathetic fawning over Israel.
