End-of-the-Year Appeal for Support

                                                                 December 17, 2004

Dear Friend of Common Dreams,

The outcome on November 2nd was bad. Really bad. For progressives. For America. For the world.

But you and I know the battle for our future is too important to let one election get us down.

In fact, I believe that a sea change has taken place in American politics which should give us all great hope - the incredible successes of 'we, the people' developing the internet as a grassroots political tool.

MoveOn.org. The use of MeetUp's. Organizing volunteers via e-mail. Knocking down the power of PACs and big donors by raising big dollars from millions of small donors. And, the sharp rise in the number of people getting their political news on-line from sites like Common Dreams.

It amazes us how many e-mails we get from readers all around the world saying: "Thank you for showing us that there are still so many good people in the United States."

And it is true: there are tens of millions of us. Good people who want our country to lead by example - not by force. For social justice. For environmental responsibility. For the common good.

Join us in showing the world that progressive Americans aren't giving up and moving to Canada. We're going to build on the successes of the 2004 campaign and take back our future.

Our goal at Common Dreams is simple: Help build community among the millions of progressive Americans by providing a space to share news and ideas.

And it's working.

Our readership is growing fast - over five million 'unique' readers visited Common Dreams last month. And, for the 4th year in a row, alexa.com ranked Common Dreams as the #1 progressive web site on the internet.

We are proud of what we've accomplished over the past eight years on a shoestring budget, a small staff of four and an amazing network of volunteers. But we want to do better.

Our funding comes 100% from our readers - from you. We accept no advertising; we have no corporate sponsors; and there's no selling or renting of our mailing lists. We depend on you.

Because we don't like to be on the receiving end of constant fundraising pitches, we don't ask for your help often. But now we must. As our readership has grown, so have our expenses.

We need to raise at least $75,000 by the end of December to carry us forward into 2005.

Can we count on your help?

You can donate online right now using PayPal. Or, you can print our contribution form and mail a check to us.

Thanks so much. We couldn't do it without you.
