Brace Yourself

Call it, what, our crapshoot democracy?

The looming election - the process itself, not merely the feints and jabs of the candidates - is actually getting some mainstream media attention, as in, ahem, voting public, excuse me, but maybe you should be aware that irresponsible self-interest has been detected in the vicinity of our polling places and some bad choices have been made lately (electronic voting is unreliable) and, well, how badly did you want your vote counted?

ACORN Raid Reflects GOP Anger at Voter Registration Drive

Yesterday's raid on Nevada offices of ACORN reflects the increasingly aggressive Republican attempts to derail voter registration efforts among poor and minority voters.

As The Washington Post reported, the Nevada chapter of the Assn. of Community Organizations for Reform Now, or ACORN, had planned a potluck dinner at its Las Vegas office Tuesday night to celebrate the 80,000 newly registered voters its staff had signed up in Clark County.

Make Absentee Voting Easier for All

I need to confess a shameful secret; a sin of omission from last year that I've regretted ever since. I didn't vote.

By most measures, I am a politically engaged college student. I read the news and political blogs every day. Since I was in high school, I've organized voter registration drives to help other students vote, and can sit for hours discussing policy and politics with friends and family. But on April 1, 2008, when Wisconsin chose its swing Supreme Court Justice, I was not a part of that decision.

Cindy Sheehan Finds A Bit of Peace in Candidacy

Cindy Sheehan walks with her dog Petey next to her campaign van outside her headquarters in San Francisco, Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2008. Sheehan is running independently for U.S. Congress for the 9th District seat currently occupied by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. She says she wants Pelosi's, because the 11-term congresswoman has led the House for two years without making good on a promise to end the war. (AP Photo/Marcio Jose Sanchez)

SAN FRANCISCO - "Peace Mom" Cindy Sheehan may finally have found some in her long-shot independent challenge to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

When the anti-war activist speaks in California's 8th District, no one boos or shouts "Traitor!" or "Commie!" No one kicks her out for being disruptive. She doesn't get arrested.

"Oh, this is a lot easier than what I was doing before," Sheehan said, riding back from one of three recent rallies. "I'm home almost every night now."

Casting Paper Ballots Is Our First Victory

My daughters and I have cast paper ballots in the opening days of the 2008 presidential election. It was their first time voting in a presidential election.

That they have only voted with an African-American atop the Democratic ticket makes this doubly historic for them. The issue of race remains a great unknown in how things will turn out.

But so does the question of whether everyone who wants to vote can, and whether those votes will be accurately counted (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHiCFe2GBjk).
