Aldermaston, England - More than 30 people were arrested yesterday during one of the biggest anti-nuclear protests at the Atomic Weapons Establishment at Aldermaston for 10 years. The gates of the site were blocked as people attached themselves to concrete blocks which had to be broken apart by police. Others climbed scaffolding or lay in the road at the demonstration by about 400 people to mark the start of the UN World Disarmament Week.

F Is for Failure

On the brief occasions when the President now appears in the Rose Garden to "comfort" or "reassure" a shock-and-awed nation, you can almost hear those legions of ducks quacking lamely in the background. Once upon a time, George W. Bush, along with his top officials and advisors, hoped to preside over a global Pax Americana and a domestic Pax Republicana -- a legacy for the generations. More recently, their highest hope seems to have been to slip out of town in January before the you-know-what hits the fan. No such luck.

Nuclear Arms Race Feared After US-India Deal Passes

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice left for India Friday to sign a civilian nuclear deal, a landmark in a budding strategic partnership and a foreign policy win for the Bush administration. BOMBAY - The United States yesterday overturned a three-decade ban on the trade of atomic fuel and technology with India, providing President Bush with what may prove his most significant foreign policy victory while in office.

Analysts say the landmark move underscores Washington's ambitions to champion India as an Asian counterweight to China. India has argued that access to nuclear power is essential to fuel its economic rise.

Loan guarantees sought by nuclear industry for reactor construction amount to ‘preemptive bailout,’ with expected default rate of 50 percent or higher

WASHINGTON - September 29 - A new ad from Friends of the Earth accuses nuclear industry lobbyists of seeking a "preemptive bailout" from Congress in the form of risky, taxpayer-backed loan guarantees from Congress.

Don’t Declare Yucca Mountain Dump Plan Dead Yet, Activist Says

A look down one of the access tunnels. Studies done by Arjun Makhijani at the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research, a watchdog group, found that in the first 10,000 years, one in every 1,700 people would be at risk of dying from cancer as a result of Yucca Mountain. But the longer the highly radioactive waste is stored at Yucca Mountain, the greater the cancer risk. (AP: Rick Gunn)

Washington - These days Nevada's leaders routinely say Yucca Mountain is dead.

Sen. Harry Reid, the majority leader of the U.S. Senate, says so. Republican Sen. John Ensign said as much last week. Others say that after the state's long battle, the proposed nuclear waste dump is barely hanging on.

But longtime nuclear activist Daniel Hirsch, who was in town to testify for a Senate panel on nuclear cleanup issues, thinks otherwise.

A Towering (but Temporary) Solartopian Victory Against Nuke Power

The grassroots green energy movement has won a huge -- but temporary -- victory over the nuke power industry.

The triumph comes at the federal level, while state-wide ratepayers are still being gouged to pay for new reactors in Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas and elsewhere.

But it means that no new major federal loan guarantees will be designated to build new reactors at least until after the November 4 presidential election.

Luminant’s Application to Expand Comanche Peak Nuclear Plant Should Not Be Accepted

Reactor Design Is Not Yet Certified

AUSTIN - September 19 - Luminant Energy's application to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to build two uncertified reactors at the Comanche Peak nuclear plant southwest of Fort Worth is premature and should not be accepted, two public interest organizations said today.

Luminant, formerly part of TXU Energy, today applied to build two US-Advanced Pressurized Water Reactors (US-APWR). Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. submitted the US-APWR design for certification on Dec. 31, 2007, but the NRC has not completed the design certification process and does not expect to until 2012.
