Election 2008

Wal-Mart Moms Could Vote to Change Wal-Mart

"Wal-Mart Moms" or "Wal-Mart Women" are the new "it" demographic this election cycle. That may be good news for Wal-Mart shoppers, but it is not good news for Wal-Mart.

Voting the Fate of the Nation

In his acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention, Barack Obama called the forthcoming presidential election a "defining moment" in this country's history. It is conceivable that he is right. There are precedents in American history for an election inaugurating a period of reform and political realignment.

Why America's Problem Is Cultural, Not Political

Here are some questions that ask the same thing in different ways. How can McCain/Palin even stand a chance in this election, given the state of the country? Why hasn't "conservative" become a dirty word, given the results of the last 8 (or is it 30) years of conservative rule? How come the Republicans get away with lies, dirty tricks, thievery and gross hypocrisy, over and over again? Why are congressional Democrats so spineless, so deferential around Republicans?

Projecting an Obama Victory

Projection is a psychological hazard of politics. What's "obvious" to some doesn't occur to others. So, these days, it's hardly reassuring when some progressives roll their eyes at the latest McCain-Palin maneuver and express confidence that few voters will be swayed by the latest slimy attacks on Barack Obama.

The poll numbers so far this month, combined with ample media hype, have fostered the belief that the current economic crisis is close to dooming the McCain campaign. But any crystal ball that offers assurance of an Obama victory is a piece of junk.

Population, Family Planning and Presidential Priorities

Over the last week, the American people and financial markets around the world watched as Congress debated an eye-popping $700 billion dollar economic rescue for the American economy.  Lost amidst the media's coverage of the rescue plan was another Congressional decision - to punt to the next President and new Congress tough decisions on funding for most FY 2009 government programs, including foreign assistance.

The VP Debate: Dishonest Foreign Policies

The October 3 debate between Alaska Governor Sarah Palin and Delaware Senator Joe Biden was disturbing for those of us hoping for a more enlightened and honest foreign policy during the next four years. In its aftermath, pundits mainly focused on Palin's failure to self-destruct and Biden's relatively cogent arguments. Here's an annotation of the foreign policy issues raised during the vice-presidential debate, which was packed with demonstrably false and misleading statements.

A Country in Shambles, Under GOP Rule

There are few things that make political coverage more unbearable -- and more distorting -- than The David Brooks Syndrome: the extremely patronizing and ill-informed pretense, shared by media and right-wing elites alike, that they can study the Little Common Person like a zoo animal, and then translate and give voice to their simple-minded, good-hearted, salt-of-the-earth perspectives.

Ifill Gets High Marks from Citizens Media Panel

NEW YORK - October 3 - Moderator Gwen Ifill of PBS received more plaudits from supporters of Barack Obama than from supporters of John McCain for her conduct during the vice presidential debate in St. Louis on Thursday night.

2,500 volunteers joined an online panel to rate the debate using Free Press' "Citizens Media Scorecard." The two groups of partisans were loyal to their own candidate: 80% of McCain supporters thought Sarah Palin won the debate; 89% of Obama supporters gave the nod to Joe Biden.

Phoney Wars and Real Ones

There's an awful lot of joking, jiving and just plain goof in this election. Sarah Palin alone has attracted an avalanche of spoof... Campaign ads on both sides are so over-the-top as to induce disbelief.
