Iran's Vote, Obama's Challenge

Foreign policy is front and center in the Iranian electoral debate. It's clear from countless discussions I've had in Tehran this week that many Iranians blame Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for isolating Iran, creating a needless confrontation with the United States, provoking a harsh set of economic sanctions that has crippled Iran's oil, aviation, and computer/IT industries.

Reform candidate Mir-Hossein Mousavi is mobilising Iran's youthful population with an aggressive internet-based campaign, challenging the precepts of Iranian political campaigning by introducing a symbolic colour with his campaign, and putting his wife, a prominent intellectual, on a pedestal.

Changing the Discourse: First Step Toward Changing the Policy?

President Barack Obama's much-anticipated Cairo speech reflected a significant shift away from the ideological framework of militarism and unilateralism that shaped the Bush administration's war-based policy toward the Arab and Muslim worlds.

Obama and Iran: New Hopes, Old Dangers

Obama has indeed done the right thing to initiate diplomacy with Iran.

Most Iranians, government officials or not, welcome it. However, the present historical moment is still fraught with danger even as it represents the greatest opportunity to date to resolve longstanding US/Iran bilateral issues.

To begin with, Israel does not favor lessening of tensions between the US and Iran.

Netanyahu: 'If Israel Doesn't Remove Iranian Threat, No One Will'

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attends a session of the Knesset, the Israeli parliament, in Jerusalem May 25, 2009. Speaking of the US President and their recent meeting, Netanyahu added that he had reached understandings with Obama, among them that the most important goal for both countries is preventing Iran from attaining a nuclear military capability. Netanyahu told Likud members that Israel received a number of key pieces of defense aid from the Americans.

JERUSALEM - If Israel does not eliminate the Iranian threat, no one will, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday.

"Israel is not like other countries," Netanyahu told his Likud faction in a meeting which came one week after his meeting with President Barack Obama at the White House. "We are faced with security challenges that no other country faces, and our need to provide a response to these is critical, and we are answering the call."

Emad Baghi Is an Advocate for Prisoners’ Rights and Ending Juvenile Executions

NEW YORK - May 20 - The decision to present the prestigious Martin Ennals Award this year to Emad Baghi for his work on prisoners' rights and efforts to end the death penalty will help focus international attention on the perilous human rights situation in Iran, Human Rights Watch and the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran said today.

"The award to Emad Baghi for his courageous efforts helps to keep the eyes of the world on the difficult human rights situation in Iran," said Joe Stork, deputy Middle East director at Human Rights Watch.

AIPAC's Hidden Persuaders

Despite the ballyhoo of the recent Aipac national policy conference in Washington, when Israel-US bonds were feted, relations between the two countries are currently more strained than at any time since 1991. That was when the elder George Bush, as US president, fiercely lobbied Yitzchak Shamir to join in the Madrid peace conference.
