Combat Vote Suppression

This longest election campaign in American history, soon to be concluded, has seen a record number of new voters registered.

In Connecticut, more than 300,000 new voters have added their names to the rolls since January 1, and a higher percentage of registered voters are expected to participate in tomorrow's election than at any time since John F. Kennedy faced off with Richard Nixon in 1960.

Worry Builds Over Possible Confusion On Voting Day

Voters line up beside empty voting booths inside the Acres Homes Mulit-Service Center to cast their votes on the first day of early voting Monday, Oct. 20, 2008, in Houston. Due to a glitch in the electronic voting system, voters waited in long lines to be checked in manually. Many voters left the polling place due to the problem.

Genie Gratto of Oakland, Calif., says early voters have been confused by arrows printed on ballots. Gary Watts reports three-hour lineups at his polling place in Renton, Wash., which provided only two dozen machines for people to vote on. Carrie Tobey has a co-worker in Cape Cod who she said was allowed to vote early instead of by absentee ballot, even though the state of Massachusetts does not allow the practice.

100 Million Suspects

In the end, the decision couldn't be clearer. This is more than just a choice between parties, or ideologies, or policy positions. It's a choice between philosophies and worldviews. It's a choice grounded in moral psychology. We will choose between different portions of our own brains, between our baser instincts and what used to be called "the angels of our better nature."

In the end, this election is a referendum on trusting the electorate. It's a referendum on democracy itself.

GOP Continues Voter Suppression Campaign While Accusing ACORN of Irregularity

DETROIT - With only days to go before the presidential election, Senator Barack Obama has increased his lead over Sen. McCain, according to most polls and pundits. Subsequently, the GOP has again turned to suppressing the minority vote.

By questioning the registration practices of community organizations, like the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), much of the national debate has focused, critically, on voter registration applications accepted in Black and Latino neighborhoods across America.

Many Voters Caught Unawares by Florida's 'No-Match' ID Law

Critics say the law adds unneeded steps for minor ID problems and is skewed against minorities. Hispanics and blacks outnumbered non-Hispanics by more than six to one on the list in South Florida, and three to one statewide. (Image: Miller-McCune)

What do a promising rookie for the Miami Heat, a systems analyst from Bulgaria, the wife of a Republican congressional candidate and Fidel Castro have in common?

They can't just show up Nov. 4 and fill out a regular ballot. Theirs are among 12,000 names statewide flagged under Florida's Voter Verification Law, a ''no match'' screening process embroiled in legal and political controversy.

Millions Not Allowed to Vote

Spencer Overton: We Need an Independent Election Commission;

Is the Fox Guarding the Henhouse?

WASHINGTON - October 31 - In part three of 'Is the fox guarding the henhouse?' series on voting in the US, the Real News explores the voting legislation that disenfranchises millions of American citizens.

Spencer Overton of the George Washington University Law School discusses with the Real News two 'big picture reforms' the US should make to its electoral system.  The first is to safeguard the voting system from manipulation by politicians.  This involves establishing an independent voting commission to monitor voting procedures.

GOP Voter Suppression: More Miss than Hit

Yesterday we posted a quick round-up of the various voter-suppression schemes being pushed by Republicans in swing states around the country. And after looking at the list, one thing quickly becomes clear: most of the efforts have failed.

There's no one grand unifying theory for why that's true.

In some cases, the courts have rejected GOP efforts to make voting harder:

Election Watch Dogs Warn Equipment Could Lose Votes;

Precautions Must Be Taken

WASHINGTON - October 30 - Today, three voting rights watch dog groups, the Brennan Center, Verified Voting, and Common Cause released an advisory to election officials warning that voting systems in specific states may not total votes correctly if proper procedures are not followed, and stressing that all vote totaling should be manually checked. The warning cited an August 19, 2008 product advisory notice issued by Premier voting systems, formerly Diebold, which acknowledged that the voting system does not always aggregate machine totals correctly when it is compiling votes from multiple polling locations.

Purged Colorado Voters Win Unprecedented Protections to Ensure Votes Are Counted

DENVER - October 30 - An agreement reached late yesterday before a federal judge in Colorado ensures that tens of thousands of Colorado voters illegally purged from the registration lists will have their votes counted. The decision was hailed by voting rights and good-government groups in Colorado and nationwide as a victory for voters and a clear message to election officials must take the necessary steps to make sure that ballots cast by eligible voters must be counted.

Appeals Court Orders Michigan to Restore 5,500 Voters to Rolls

Ruling Is Latest Victory in ACLU and Advancement Project Legal Challenge

CINCINNATI - October 30 - A federal appeals court late Wednesday cleared the way for 5,500 illegally purged voters to be returned to the rolls in time for Election Day. The U.S. Appeals Court for the Sixth Circuit rejected Michigan Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land's request not to enforce an earlier court ruling that declared the state's voter removal programs illegal. The appeals court decision is the latest victory in a lawsuit filed in September by the American Civil Liberties Union, the ACLU of Michigan, Advancement Project and the law firm of Pepper Hamilton LLP.
