Report Says Nuclear Plants Are Poisoning Our Water

Nuclear facilities and power plants are contaminating local Canadian food and water with radioactive waste that increases risks of cancer and birth defects, says a new report to be released today.

Nuclear Power’s Megafraud

Energy independence is the new creationism; nuclear power its deity. As the head glow for nuclear's new dawn, you can't do better than Aris Candris. He's president and CEO of Westinghouse Electric, the company aiming to build 14 of 25 new nuclear reactors planned in the United States. Candris also sums up everything that's wrong with the nuclear power industry's orchestrated revival-the deceptions, the manipulated numbers, the false promises and the sheer swindle of taxpayer dollars for a technology with a lethal past and an unproven future.

India Ramps up Nuclear Power With Help From the United States

At the insistence of the United States, India has been granted global “nuclear exception” status despite being a non-signatory on nuclear non-proliferation treaties, such as the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. The Indo-US civilian nuclear deal (signed in October of last year), consensus at the Nuclear Supplier’s Group and clearance by the global nuclear watchdog International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), means that India can now access dual-use nuclear technology to generate electricity.

A Nuclear Power Boost for Senate Bill

Will a heaping spoonful of nuclear power help Congress swallow a climate bill?

The Obama administration and leading congressional Democrats are wooing wavering Democrats and Republicans to back a climate bill by dangling federal tax incentives and new loan guarantees for nuclear power plant construction, even though financial analysts warn that huge capital needs and a history of cost overruns would constrain what many lawmakers hope will be a "nuclear renaissance."

Boxer-Kerry Climate Bill Greenwashes Nuclear Power

Bowing to pressure from the pro-nuclear lobby, Senators Boxer and Kerry have included nuclear power into their bill to address climate change. In their proposed legislation, the Senators claim that "nuclear energy is the largest provider of clean, low-carbon, electricity...." Funny we've heard that before. In fact, the bill's nuclear section reads like it was lifted off the Nuclear Energy Institute's (NEI) website, despite its lack of veracity.

It's Bomb, Bomb, Bomb Iran Time

The United States and Western "bomb, bomb, bomb Iran" crowd -- hysteria running at fever pitch ahead of Thursday's multilateral nuclear talks in Geneva -- could do worse than have a word with Brazilian President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva.

Tom Friedman's Idiocy Atomique

France's atomic power industry is a failed radioactive flame. Its 58 reactors are unpopular, unsafe, uneconomical, dirty, direct agents of global warming, weapons proliferators and major generators of atomic waste for which there is no management solution.

Thousands of people from across Germany, including farmers on tractors, are in Berlin this Saturday to protest against the nuclear energy industry and in support of a plan to shut down the country's nuclear reactors.

The future of Germany's 17 nuclear power plants, due to be shut down by the early 2020s, is one of the major issues that separates Chancellor Angela Merkel's center-right Christian Democrats from the center-left Social Democrats.

The government can rely on the nation's defenses to prevent terrorist attacks from the air on nuclear power plants and doesn't have to order operators to take additional measures, a federal appeals court has ruled.

In a 2-1 decision, the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco rejected claims by critics of the nuclear industry, joined by the states of California and New York, that current measures to guard the plants from attacks by land and water fail to address the dangers of aerial assaults.
