Medical Marijuana Raid Raises Question: What's Obama Policy

WASHINGTON - A recent Drug Enforcement Administration raid on a South Lake Tahoe, Calif., medical marijuana dispensary showcases one of the legal conflicts inherited by the Obama administration.

The Jan. 22 raid near the California-Nevada border occurred two days after Obama took office and before the new president's own Justice Department team was in place. The raid resembled many conducted during the Bush administration, but seemingly clashed with Obama's campaign opposition to such tactics.

ACLU Calls on Congress and President Obama to Renew Their Commitment to Greater Family Planning Access

WASHINGTON - January 28 - The American Civil Liberties Union today was disappointed to learn that the Medicaid Family Planning State Option provision was removed from the economic stimulus package, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, currently under consideration by Congress. The ACLU calls on President Obama and Congress to renew their support for this important family planning measure that would expand access to reproductive health care, including contraception, for low-income Americans and serve as a huge cost saving measure for the federal government.

Some Fear Window Is Narrow for Healthcare Overhaul

WASHINGTON - Mindful of how delays sapped the political will to overhaul healthcare during the Clinton administration, health advocates hoped to get a major bill during the new administration's first 100 days. Now, it looks like it will take longer, and some observers fear that a historic opportunity could be missed.

American Seniors Living Longer on Less

3 out of 4 senior households lack the economic security needed to sustain them through their lives, according to new study.

“This is a wakeup call for America: Congress must act now to ensure economic stability for today’s seniors and future generations.”

NEW YORK - January 28 - Older Americans have experienced huge, negative financial shifts that now make it more difficult to enter retirement with sustainable economic security, a new study finds.  Seventy-eight percent of all senior households are financially vulnerable when it comes to their ability to meet essential expenses and cover projected costs over their lifetimes.

Medicaid Family Planning Provision Expands Health Care for Women

WASHINGTON - January 27 - Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) expressed disappointment that a measure to invest in health care and allow states to expand health care access to more women was removed from the economic stimulus.

“We are disappointed that the Medicaid Family Planning State Option, a commonsense provision to expand basic health care to millions of women, including many who have lost their jobs in the current economic downturn, was a victim of misleading attacks and partisan politics, and dropped from the economic stimulus bill,” said PPFA President Cecile Richards.
