The Cost of America's Gun Addiction

"Killing shocks UC Irvine campus" ran the headline in the Los Angeles Times recently after a man allegedly shot his ex-wife to death.

The article, which reported the slaying, focused at least as much on the shock in the community that such a thing could happen in a place like Irvine, California.

I felt sad, of course, when I read it. I felt a twinge of despair. Shock, however? Not the least bit. Of course it happened.

Ban Guns From Public Political Events

Those of us living in the Rocky Mountains are steeped in America's famous gun culture - and we therefore know well the binary debates surrounding the Second Amendment. Firearm enthusiasts - the vast majority of whom use weapons responsibly - believe the Constitution protects their right to bear arms. Gun control advocates counter that the Constitution doesn't give anyone the inalienable right to wield automatic weapons that can kill scores of people in seconds.

Guns at Political Events: A Chilling Effect on the First Amendment

On August 11, a man with a loaded firearm in a holster appeared outside a town hall meeting in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where President Obama was speaking. He carried a sign that said: "It is Time to Water the Tree of Liberty"—a reference to Thomas Jefferson's statement that "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants." Neither the Secret Service nor police ushered the man away from the area of the president's town meeting.

Million Mom March Activists Mark Somber Anniversary, Launch Online 'Mother's Day 2010 Project'

WASHINGTON - August 10 - On August 10, 1999, a white supremacist opened fire at children, camp counselors and staff at the North Valley Jewish Community Center in Granada Hills, California. That event led to the Million Mom March on Washington D.C. to demand sensible gun laws, held the following Mother's Day.  Activists organized the march in just nine months - "a time frame universally respected by all mothers," said one organizer.

Gun Proposal Further Complicates Defense Bill

An amendment to let gun owners bring weapons across state lines further complicates senators' consideration of the $680 billion defense authorization bill. (Getty Images)

WASHINGTON - Another day, another contentious vote in the Senate.

A vote is expected today on a proposal that would allow certain gunowners to bring their weapons across state lines.

The amendment would let people with concealed weapons permits carry their guns into other states as long as they follow that state's laws about where concealed weapons are permissible.

Senate May Try to Override State Concealed Weapons Restrictions by Amendment to Defense Authorization Bill

WASHINGTON - July 10 - The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence is alerting activists across the country that a potential amendment to a Department of Defense authorization bill scheduled for action in the U.S. Senate as early as next week would eviscerate limitations in many U.S. states on who can carry a loaded, hidden handgun in public in their state.

Guns and the Link We Won't Admit

There are without a doubt links among the extremists who have murdered three Pittsburgh police officers, gunned down a doctor who performed abortions in Wichita, killed a new Army recruit and wounded another in Arkansas and brought a demented hatred of Jews and blacks to bear in last week's shooting at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum.
