AUGUSTA, Maine - A state senator from Hancock County is sponsoring a bill to allow same-sex couples to marry in Maine.

Sen. Dennis S. Damon, D-Trenton, announced at a press conference Tuesday that he is submitting legislation to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as between a man and a woman. His proposed bill, which has not yet been drafted, would include language to allow "two persons to marry."

New Study Shows Party, Ideology, Frequency of Religious Service Attendance and Age Drove Vote on Prop. 8

Precinct-by-precinct analysis and other data debunk myths about African-American voting on marriage equality

Support for freedom to marry grows across nearly all demographics

WASHINGTON - January 6 - An in-depth analysis of the Proposition 8 vote released today shows that party affiliation, political ideology, frequency of attending worship services and age were the driving forces behind the measure's passage on Nov. 4. The study finds that after taking into account the effect of religious service attendance, support for Proposition 8 among African Americans and Latinos was not significantly different than other groups.

Bad Company: US Fails Gay, Lesbian Citizens

You can hardly blame the gay-and-lesbian community for being upset these days.

President-elect Barack Obama, for whose election many members of the gay community worked hard, has invited the Rev. Rick Warren -- who has compared gay marriage to incest and child rape -- to deliver the inaugural invocation. (And don't get us started on Warren's spittle-flecked support of Republican overreaching in the tragic case of Terry Schiavo in 2005; he compared removing the brain-dead woman's feeding tube to Nazism).

Rick Warren: A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing

If nothing else, Rick Warren is a miracle worker in the realm of public relations. He is a man who compares legal abortion to the Holocaust and gay marriage to incest and pedophilia. He believes that Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus and other non-Christians are going to spend eternity burning in hell.

SAN FRANCISCO - Since California voters approved Proposition 8 last month and repealed the right of gay couples to marry, initiative opponents have marched, held rallies and blocked intersections.

On Wednesday, they're asked to do something different: nothing at all.

DES MOINES, Iowa - The gay marriage debate moves to the Midwest this week as the Iowa Supreme Court hears arguments in a challenge to the state's ban on same-sex marriage.

If the high court rules in favor of the half-dozen gay couples who sued, it would make Iowa the fourth state after Massachusetts, California and Connecticut to uphold the right of same-sex couples to legally marry. In California, however, voters have negated the courts by amending the state constitution to ban gay marriage.

SAN FRANCISCO - The state Supreme Court plunged back into the same-sex marriage wars Wednesday, agreeing to decide the legality of a ballot measure that repealed the right of gay and lesbian couples to wed in California.

Six months after its momentous ruling that struck down the state's ban on same-sex marriage, the court granted requests by both sponsors and opponents of Proposition 8 to review lawsuits challenging the Nov. 4 initiative.

The vote was 6-1, Justice Joyce Kennard dissenting.

'Milk' Relevant to Today's Politics

For anyone who's old enough to remember, the current uprising against the passage of California's Proposition 8 mirrors something that happened 30 years ago: In 1978, San Francisco County Supervisor Harvey Milk led a crusade against the state's Proposition 6, a measure that would have banned gay people from teaching in public schools.

A movie about his successful fight - and subsequent murder - are the focus of the upcoming feature film "Milk," starring Sean Penn in a performance that is already generating lots of Oscar talk.
