CU & CFA: Materials Made From BPA Should Not Be Used in Food and Beverage Containers

FDA's Assessment of BPA Is Inadequate Given Mounting Scientific Evidence;

CU to Testify Before FDA on Issue on September 16

YONKERS, N.Y. - September 15 - Consumers Union (CU) and Consumer Federation of America (CFA) today announced that the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) draft assessment of bisphenol A (BPA) as safe for food contact applications does not adequately account for the large body of mounting scientific evidence to the contrary. In addition, CU and CFA believe that materials made with BPA should not be used in any food or beverage containers and should be replaced with safer alternatives.

Consumers Union Lauds Mandatory Country of Origin Labeling Finally Implemented on All Fresh Produce, Meat & Poultry in the US

Concerns Raised About Exemptions for Meat & Poultry Sold in Butcher Shops and Fish Markets, Processed and Mixed Products

“COOL Tool” Online: CU Guide Helps Consumers Understand COOL

YONKERS, NY - September 12 - Consumers Union today hailed the long-awaited implementation of mandatory federal country of origin labeling (COOL) on all meats, fish, poultry and produce sold in retail stores in the United States beginning September 30, 2008. Mandatory COOL for meats, fish, produce and peanuts became law in the United States in 2002. But under pressure from industry, Congress delayed implementation of all but the seafood labeling until October 2008. A Consumer Reports poll released last year found that 92 percent of Americans agree that imported foods should be labeled by their country of origin.

Evil: It's the New Good!

The devil isn't evil, he just has lousy PR.

Examples? They are legion. Here's one the Powers That Be desperately hope you'll swallow, a nasty piece of marketing gall meant to stab at your intelligence and bitch-slap your intuition, but which is nevertheless being force-fed to you as happy environmental manna, a viciously deformed version of something called "progress."

Congress Poised to Cut Conservation Funds That Aided Farm Bill’s Passage

More Than 40,000 Farmers Denied Funds to Reduce Pollution From Their Farms

WASHINGTON - September 9 - September 9, 2008. Behind the thin green gloss Congressional leaders spread across the subsidy-laden 2008 farm bill, the Democratic Congress is now hacking away at pledges to expand conservation and other environmental programs. Data analyzed by the Environmental Working Group show that Congress is trying to roll back funding increases in critical conservation and environmental programs, funding pledged in the farm law passed just weeks ago.
