The Heat Is on Washington

A boiling point over government inaction on climate change may have been reached in the United States.

More than 12,000 mainly young people are planning to gather in Washington on Monday, Mar. 2, to insist that their elected officials legislate immediate and deep cuts in U.S. emissions of carbon dioxide, just as scientists revealed this week that the global climate is more sensitive to rising temperatures than expected.

Wake Up Call: Activists Visit 'The Army Experience'

On Monday, February 16th about 50 activists decided to take a trip to the Franklin Mills Mall right outside Philadelphia, PA to get their look at a new "store".  "The Army Experience" (AEC), as it is called, built by the taxpayers to the tune of $12 million, attracts local kids to play video games, most of which are high tech simulations of combat situations.

The Third-Party Delusion and the Need for a Mass Movement for Progressive Change

I can't count how many people have bombarded me with criticisms, usually laced with insults and often obscenities, when I have written articles calling for pressure on Democratic politicians to do the right thing, whether that is impeaching the last president and vice president for war crimes or in the case of our new president, standing and fighting for a people's bailout, instead of a Wall Street bailout.

Saturday Morning Procession Planned From Arlington National Cemetery to White House

WASHINGTON - February 5 - Members of Military Families Speak Out from across the U.S. will hold a solemn procession from Arlington National Cemetery to the White House beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday February 7th to bring President Obama the message that they want him to bring an immediate end to the war in Iraq that has already claimed the lives of over 4,200 U.S.

###

Our membership currently includes over 3,400 military families, with new families joining daily.

Tax the Speculators

Let's start with a fairness point. Why should you pay a 5 to 6 percent sales tax for buying the necessities of life, when tomorrow, some speculator on Wall Street can buy $100 million worth of Exxon derivatives and not pay one penny in sales tax? Let's further add a point of common sense. The basic premise of taxation should be to first tax what society likes the least or dislikes the most, before it taxes honest labor or human needs.

Facing Foreclosure? Don't Leave. Squat

Marcy Kaptur of Ohio is the longest-serving Democratic congresswoman in U.S. history. Her district, stretching along the shore of Lake Erie from west of Cleveland to Toledo, faces an epidemic of home foreclosures and 11.5 percent unemployment. That heartland region, the Rust Belt, had its heart torn out by the North American Free Trade Agreement, with shuttered factories and struggling family farms. Kaptur led the fight in Congress against NAFTA. Now, she is recommending a radical foreclosure solution from the floor of the U.S.

Citizens Urge New Attorney General Holder & President Obama to Release 17 Uighur Guantanamo Prisoners Into the US

Procession to Justice Department Today

WASHINGTON - February 3 - Key human rights groups are urging President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder to take a simple step that will right a seven-year wrong: they want him to lift the Bush administration's appeal of Judge Ricardo Urbina's order to release the 17 Uighurs imprisoned in Guantanamo. This act would let stand Judge Urbina's order to bring the men into the United States immediately. Part of a Muslim ethnic minority in China, the Uighurs would likely face persecution by the Chinese government if returned to China.
