Coal Ash: The Hidden Story

A four-month investigation by the Center for Public Integrity reveals a growing environmental disaster and a decades-long history of government inaction

WASHINGTON - February 19 - The dangers of coal ash were largely hidden from public view until December, when a dam holding a billion gallons of the waste collapsed in Eastern Tennessee. But what happened there represents just a small slice of the potential threat from coal ash, according to a new Center for Public Integrity report, Coal Ash: The Hidden Story.

FRANKFORT, Ky. - Fresh from her well-publicized skirmish with Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin over aerial hunting of wolves, actress Ashley Judd delivered a broadside attack on the coal industry yesterday in Frankfort.

In a spirited speech before several hundred people who oppose strip-mining Appalachian mountains for coal, the Kentucky native railed against "the unchecked power of the coal companies" and lamented the loss of mountains that give the region's residents such a strong sense of identity.

EPA to Review Bush Rule on Warming Emissions

The Obama administration on Tuesday agreed to review whether it should regulate carbon dioxide emissions from coal-fired power plants, portending a major reversal of the Bush administration's policy on global warming.

The Environmental Protection Agency granted a petition from environmental groups seeking to overturn a rule that prohibited controls on these emissions under the Clean Air Act.

WASHINGTON - February 17 - EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson took an important first step toward controlling carbon dioxide (CO2) in announcing that the EPA will take a fresh look at a Bush Administration rule prevent the regulation of CO2 emissions from coal-fired power plants and other sources.

Appeals Court Overturns Mountaintop Removal Ruling

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - A federal appeals court today overturned a judge's 2007 decision to require more thorough permit reviews of mountaintop removal mining operations.

In a victory for the coal industry, the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Va., rejected the decision by U.S. District Judge Robert C. Chambers in Huntington.

Since Obama has taken office, just 3 short weeks ago, there have been more than 50 actions in 25 states proclaiming the need for the US to break up with coal and move on to a healthier relationship--metaphorically speaking.

House Subcommittee Considers Coal Ash Regulations

Proposed Bill Mandates Swift Action, But Stronger Measures Needed

WASHINGTON - February 12 - As Congress considers legislation today to regulate the toxic byproducts of coal-fired power plants, a broad coalition of environmental groups welcome the quick attention to this vital issue from Chairman Nick Rahall (D-W.V.) and the committee, but cautioned that more sweeping action is necessary to fully address the problem.

Eight More Arrests Following Second Wave of Citizen Protest at Toxic Coal Sludge Lake and Mountaintop Removal Site

Massey Energy blasting would endanger community, destroy permanent renewable energy potential

PETTUS, W.Va. - February 3 - This morning five activists, who had chained themselves to a bulldozer and an excavator, and one videographer were arrested for trespassing at a mountaintop removal site.  By afternoon, dozens of local residents, friends and supporters from throughout Appalachia converged at the mine's gate.  Eight more citizens were arrested in the afternoon action.
