This weekend at the eighth
annual US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation national organizers'
conference held in Chicago, delegates from the approximately 300 member
groups that make up the US Campaign voted in favor of an academic and
cultural boycott of Israel. The vote came on the heels of a
presentation by Omar Barghouti and myself on behalf of the Palestinian
Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel and the US
Campaign for an Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel.
When I heard the Toronto International Film Festival
(TIFF) was holding a celebratory "spotlight" on Tel Aviv, I felt
ashamed of Toronto, the city where I live. I thought immediately of
Mona Al Shawa, a Palestinian women's rights activist I met on a recent trip to
Gaza. "We had more hope during the attacks," she told me. "At least then we
believed things would change."
As
the dust settled on the destroyed homes, schools and lives in the
aftermath of Israel’s assault on Gaza earlier this year, mainstream
human rights groups from Amnesty International to Physicians for Human
Rights/Israel issued reports condemning Israel’s attack and alleging
that the Israeli government and the Israeli Defense Forces had
committed war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Dear President Obama,
I found your book ‘Dreams
from my Father' a moving and inspiring story of your own struggle
to find your identity and purpose in life. You found it for sure, and
today carry the hopes and dreams of so many people in our world.
We pray for you and your family. We wish you all
good health and happiness. You carry so much responsibility.
We hope you will change the policies of USA (both domestic and Foreign)
to people centred policies, based on the values and ethics which you
try to live out in your life.
The Israeli invasion of
Gaza, which has now claimed more than 1,400 lives, generated serious
popular backlash the world over. The overwhelmingly weak official
positions and statements, especially in the Arab world, stood in stark
contrast to the outpouring of rage that was witnessed in the streets of
capitals, cities, and towns across the globe.
