Israel's War Against Youth

About six months after Israel's attorney general publicly announced an effort to criminalise dissent, state authorities have upped the ante in their "war" - as the daily Ha'aretz called it last September - against Israel's youth and against the broad, grassroots protest movement of young Israelis who avoid serving their compulsory time in the military - slandered by officials as "draft shirkers".

Defying Threats, Fighting Oppression: The Woman Leading Protests in Afghanistan

They were stoned, spat on and assaulted, but when 200 women staged Afghanistan's first public women's rights protest since the 1970s their voices were heard around the world.

And if centuries-old traditions are to change, it may well be a petite but pugnacious 28-year-old called Diana Saqeb who is responsible.

Accused BLM Bid Monkey-Wrencher de Christopher Pleads Not Guilty

Tim DeChristopher, who has freely acknowledged his attempt to disrupt the auction as an act of civil disobedience, told supporters Tuesday that the consequences of continuing to ruin ecosystems and spew greenhouse gases into the atmosphere is a bigger threat than prison. (Salt Lake Tribune)

Tim DeChristopher pleaded "not guilty" Tuesday to disrupting a Bureau of Land Management oil and gas lease auction in December and pledged to use his prosecution to attack policies he says are allowing climate change to careen out of control.

About 200 supporters rallied for the 27-year-old University of Utah student at the downtown Salt Lake City library and marched with him to the federal courthouse, where he was arraigned and his weeklong trial was scheduled to begin July 6.

"Clean Coal Dirty Lie" is a sign held by a depiction of a bee, meant to represent an Appalachian person, in the Beehive Design Collective's newest collage drawing project: "The True Cost of Coal: Mountaintop Removal and the Fight For Our Future."

There was much happening on the quad in celebration of Earth day on Wednesday. But somewhere off the quad, the distant sound of bees could be heard. A buzzing could be heard all over campus coming from the activity room of the Bowling and Billiards Center.

A Voice of Hope for Afghanistan's Women

Malalai Joya believes the US and other foreign powers are making a mockery of democracy and the liberation of Afghan women by empowering the warlords and fundamentalists.

FOR the women of Afghanistan, it is yet another brutal message - that death awaits those who choose a public life.

Sitara Achakzai - a women's rights campaigner - was gunned down in the streets of Kandahar on Sunday.

She is among several high-profile women assassinated the Taliban have in recent years. But it is merely the most public example of the extreme violence women face in this embattled country, where rape and murder are widespread.

My Night in the Las Vegas Jail

On Holy Thursday, at 3 p.m. in the afternoon, fourteen of us walked on to the Creech Air Force Base near Indian Springs, Nevada (about an hour northwest of Las Vegas) to pray and speak out against the U.S. unmanned drones which take off every two minutes in practice runs for bombing raids in Central Asia. After three hours, we were arrested, put in handcuffs and chains, then jailed for the night in Las Vegas.

Nationalize, Reorganize, Decentralize

Two days ago I wrote about introducing a new kind of scale-based antitrust. Before exploring some other structural reforms, I want to encourage people to join a nationwide demonstration of support for some basic principles of structural change in the banking sector.

Lesson From Vermont: Don't Cower, Push

They did it. On Tuesday the Vermont legislature formally recognized that civil unions are not the same as marriage. Forgive me for saying it, but I think the Vermonters have a thing or two to teach the Congress.
