Young Climate Activists Call On Clinton to Stop Tar Sands Pipeline

The Avaaz Action Factory is at it again. This time its target is Secretary Clinton; its quest is to get her to stop a new pipeline that would send Canadian tar sands oil into the US.

Yesterday, during morning rush hour, these young and creative activists showed up at the State Department in full costume, complete with a kiddie pool full of a tar sands mixture. Their banner read: "Clinton be a Leader. Say No to Tar Sands, Stop Global Warming."

Bend It Like Obama?

As I write, the Senate Finance Committee has yet to release its version of healthcare reform legislation, and Harry Reid has announced that the Senate won't vote on any healthcare bill until after the August recess. This is worrisome. The future of progressive politics and the nature of the American social contract, not to mention the lives and health of millions of our fellow citizens, is up for grabs.

Obama's 'Green-Jobs' Guru: From Activist to Environmentalist

\"We want to bring green jobs to people who don't have hope,\" says Van Jones, the president's \"green jobs\" chief. WASHINGTON -- Van Jones defies environmentalist stereotypes. He's not the earthy-crunchy, Birkenstock-wearing type. Nor is he a contemporary and corporate version -- a hedge fund-fueled entrepreneur looking to make millions by building wind farms and solar-powered corporate headquarters.

Fighting the Forgotten War: Students' Activism for the Congo

Kambale Musavuli isn't your average student.

For one, he's not attached to his cell phone. In the first few days of trying to reach him for this article, the only response I received was the following recorded message: "Did you know that Congo has anywhere from 64-80% of the world's reserve of Coltan, a natural resource that is central to the operation of our cell phones?"

Yes We Camp

It's the slogan of the citizens committees that have formed in the central Italian city of L'Aquila, hit by a 6.3 magnitude earthquake on April 6, 2009. And it was on display for world leaders during the G8 summit being held just outside the city in an area off limits to the local people.

Greenpeace Makes Urgent Call for Climate Action From Face of Mt. Rushmore

Challenges President Obama to lead the world in fighting global warming

WASHINGTON - July 8 - This morning, 11 daring Greenpeace climbers hung a banner on Mount Rushmore challenging President Obama to show real leadership on global warming. The banner, measuring sixty-five feet high by thirty-five feet wide, features an unfinished portrait of Obama with the message, "America honors leaders not politicians: Stop Global Warming." The demonstration comes as President Obama meets other G8 leaders in L'Aquila, Italy today to discuss the global warming crisis in the lead-up to UN climate treaty negotiations in Copenhagen this December.

Israel to Deport Gaza Activists

Mairead Maguire was detained trying to enter Gaza (BBC)

Israel says it will expel eight pro-Palestinian activists detained at sea last week as they tried to ferry aid to Gaza in defiance of Israel's blockade.

Nobel peace laureate Mairead Maguire and former US congresswoman Cynthia McKinney are among the detainees.

They complain the Israeli navy seized them illegally in Palestinian waters.

Israel's navy has blockaded Gaza since the election victory of Hamas militants in 2006. It said the Greek ship ignored orders to stop and was intercepted.

Resisting US Bases in Italy: No a la base si a la pace!

Vicenza, four hours north of Rome between Venice and Milan, is a classically Italian city with two important footnotes.

Coal Country is Ground Zero in Climate Change Battle

Dear Al Gore:

Your long-time work on climate destabilization has triggered a sea change in how our nation tackles the impending crisis of global warming. I deeply admire and appreciate your commitment to an urgent issue that transcends borders, and affects the fate of our children's future.

As a father and grandfather raising a family in the great forests of the Appalachian coalfields, where my family has been rooted since the 1830s, I am writing you in a time of similar urgency.
