McCain's Warped Worldview
The world according to John McCain is one in which America is triumphant at home and abroad thanks to the Bush legacy, rolling to victory internationally and mastering its domestic economic problems. If daily news, like reports of the 10 French soldiers killed by a resurgent Taliban in Afghanistan and the U.S. government's imminent nationalization of much of the American mortgage-lending industry, would seem to deny such a rosy scenario, then that only shows skeptics lack the courage that sustained McCain as a prisoner of war in Vietnam.
There you have it encapsulated, the McCain campaign for president, an irrational mélange of patriotic swagger and blindness to reality that is proving disturbingly successful with uninformed voters. How else to explain the many millions of Americans who tell pollsters they prefer a continuation of Republican rule when so many of them are losing their homes to foreclosure and the nation is devastated by out-of-control military spending?
The economy is in a downward spiral, the national debt is at an all-time high, the dollar is an international disgrace and inflation in July had the steepest rise in 27 years, driven by oil prices fivefold higher than when George W. Bush invaded the nation with the world's second-largest petroleum reserves.
While the oil-rich Mideast nations we protect refuse to fully open the oil spigots as payback for our military efforts, McCain celebrates Gen. David Petraeus as his No. 1 hero for "victory" in Iraq. Aside from the reality that victory there is now defined as returning to the level of stability provided by Saddam Hussein, who the Bush administration admits had nothing to do with the bin Laden-led terrorists, even that goal requires the cooperation of our former sworn enemies, Iran's ayatollahs.
Presumably McCain envisions a more favorable outcome for Georgia, to which he would commit the unqualified support of the United States with his outrageously overreaching statement that "we are all Georgians." If Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama had been in contact with the leader of a nation before and after that nation provoked a war, his campaign would be a shambles. Not so McCain, who is acting as if he is already the elected commander in chief ensconced in a reconstituted neoconservative-dominated White House. By contrast, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has been reduced to a blustering bystander.
That military victory in Iraq and any other trouble spot is the key selling point of the McCain campaign is odd, because McCain's credentials derive from participation in a war that resulted in the most ignominious defeat in U.S. history. How else to think of the loss of almost 59,000 Americans and 3.4 million Indochinese in a war that even McCain has long since not seriously tried to defend. Surely McCain accepted the notion that a Communist Party-run Vietnam was compatible with U.S. security interests when he, along with Sen. John Kerry, led the fight for U.S. recognition of Vietnam.
Wouldn't it have been grand if McCain, who made his own pilgrimage of reconciliation to Hanoi, would have drawn the proper lesson from that sad chapter in American history-that victory isn't everything it's cracked up to be? Or, by extension, from the recent Olympic festivities in still-Red China, where Bush was photographed quite happily near portraits of the once-dreaded Chairman Mao, whom U.S. propaganda had long described, quite erroneously, as chief sponsor of the Vietnamese communists.
We are reminded of how brilliant Republican Richard Nixon was in rejecting the neoconservative addiction to the Cold War that McCain embraces when the late president traveled to Beijing to make peace with the man previously depicted as the bloodiest of communist dictators. It turns out that the various communist movements were nationalist above all else, and when we "lost" in Vietnam, the result was not attacks on the United States, but a war between China and Vietnam.
The lesson McCain should have learned is that the world is a complex place, that today's enemies may be tomorrow's negotiating partners-as Obama has at times dared to suggest-and that the neoconservative idea of a Pax Americana is a dangerous fantasy. And a costly one at that, not only in lost lives and blowback from the regions we destabilize but also in the dollars that American taxpayers must waste.
Thanks to the absurdly misdirected war on terrorism that McCain so enthusiastically supports, we spend more annually in inflation-adjusted dollars on the military than at any time since World War II, even more than during the Korean and Vietnam wars. Vote for McCain and forget about funding to solve the Social Security, Medicare and subprime mortgage disasters or for anything else that truly would make America stronger.

Show AllIt may hurt many here to admit it, but the majority may elect McCain. If this happens, this says as much about us as him. Maybe the question we should be asking is: "why have so many lost their souls, and to what?"
"You can't request more than 20 challenges without solving them. Your previous challenges were flushed."
This drivel appeared under the headline. Anyone know what it's about?
Thanks,
ark
Keep underestimating McCain, keep telling yourself he's nuts, he is a warmonger, etc and you will elect him President.
Has no one noticed he is winning? Winning for God's sakes.
The man (McCain) is warped but along the same line that brought us two terms of Bush 43. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him elected as the election is again close enough to steal. Anyone who thinks this an unlikely scenario just hasn’t been paying attention over the last eight years. Ironically these would be the people to allow this to happen – the ones that do not pay any attention other than sucking in the MSM and all of its fabrications and glorifying the war machine. All of this while putting those ridiculous and maddening ribbon stickers on their gas-guzzling, over-the-top vehicles. McCain is warped but brought to you by a warped America.
Oops... Ghost in the Machine...
So many Americans do not know from day to day if they own a house anymore. And then there's Senator McCain, is it Arrogance or Alzheimer’s?
"WASHINGTON (AP) - Days after he cracked that being rich in the U.S. meant earning at least $5 million a year, Republican presidential candidate John McCain acknowledged that he wasn't sure how many houses he and his wealthy wife actually own."
"oh, and thanks for taking me to a BLANK PAGE right after my comment, instead of back here to the article!
BRING BACK TO ORIGINAL COMMENT FORMAT! cd probably will never again see another red cent from me over this outrage!"
Amen. If they wanted to decrease comment, decrease readership and annoy everyone concerned, they have succeded.
Thomas, if you feel that you are not getting your money's worth
then complain to 'webmaster' ... or elsewhere.
Sorry, didn't realize you were in charge. Will do.

Has McCain ever met up with a military conflict that gave him pause? A few years back McCain suggested that perhaps we should bomb N. Korea. He introduced a resolution in Congress to authorize a full-blown war with ground troops against Serbia. He sings ditties like, “Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran.” After the recent Georgia-Russian conflict, I fear McCain would actually consider military action against Russia. I don’t worry about McCain possibly shooting America in the foot. I fear this reckless old fool’s stumbles will gut-shoot us.
"Can't believe it" Dept.: WE have been arming Georgia. WE tell them in secret it's OK to invade little neighbors, via McCain's advisors and Karl Rove who was there in July. They do it, kill thousands. Russia comes in to stop it. Now our fuckin' media, playing for melodrama, are talking up a new Cold War. After all, Russia is mad because WE put missiles in Poland. They're just there to defend Europe against Iran---who has NO Missiles that can reach Europe!!!! I guess the Pentagon isn't getting enough money, after all why won't Osama attack? Man, there is NOTHING the Right won't do to keep the world at war....Absolutely OBVIOUSLY insane and nobody says a fuckin' word...except of course NADER who doesn't exist or so you'd think....
As a viable Presidential candidate,Nader does not exist. If Nader was not on the ballot in Florida in 2000, President Bush would not exist, either.

wow, only 16 comments on this post, before the "comment changes" this post would have had a lively 30-50 by now...
i want to find a blogspot LIKE THE OLD CDs, one where there is an informative article and interesting 'noncencored' (in whatever form it rears) debate.
This new format sucks!!! Craig Brown and the Commondreams team really need to get their heads out of their collective asses.
Republican presidential candidate John McCain chided his Democratic rival on Wednesday for getting "a little testy" which is GOPspeak for "uppity?"
McCain is just one point behind Obama as of today. Oh oh, Slick, you better pick Hillary for your VP if You wanna win.
I don't get the resistance to McCain...the man is practically a Democrat
Look at him like I do...a Liberal who'll kill Terrorists
He's got my vote
"That today's enemies may be tomorrow's negotiating partners, as Obama has at times dared to suggest."
Despite the above statement Obama is no less a warmonger than McCain. He has made a 180 degree turn from his previous stance on Iraq. He now says that the war will end when conditions on the ground permit as decided by the commanders on the ground, the same stance that is espoused by Bush and McCain. He also wants to increase military spending and expand the size of military.
On Afghanistan he has had this to say:
August 6, 2008
More of the Same, Packaged as Change
Barack Obama and Afghanistan
By MARC HEROLD
Candidate Obama’s most important prepared foreign policy speech to-date, that given on July 14, 2008
"Our troops and our NATO allies are performing heroically in Afghanistan, but I have argued for years that we lack the resources to finish the job because of our commitment to Iraq. That's what the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said earlier this month. And that's why, as President, I will make the fight against Al Qaeda and the Taliban the top priority that it should be. This is a war that we have to win…. We need more troops, more helicopters, more satellites, and more Predator drones in the Afghan border region. And we must make it clear that if Pakistan cannot or will not act, we will take out high-level terrorist targets like bin Laden if we have them in our sights."

this is a test: Ohhhhhhhhhhh...
decrepittex:
More War will not solve all McSame's problems, but it will help to make his elite, corrupt MIC friends richer, and richer!
Politics are all about more money for the rich few and more misery for the masses! Our government "of the people, for the people" is a sad joke.
Anyone remember: "Don't let the pigs take the hill!"? Well, the pigs did take the hill, and beat the shit out of protestors on Monday and Tuesday night in the park, 40 Augusts ago at the DNC in Chicago.
Today: Same ol, same ol... if you can find a protest event, be careful. The poor, stupid pigs still itch to bust some more head.
I should change my CD name to "Moving to Mexico!" Will they send my monthly, meager Social Security down there? NOT!!!

Actually, yes they will. But you need health insurance which was running $400 per year the last I heard...
As for the ten dead French soldiers, I heard that they were killed by NATO and not the Taliban. Tillman again?
It's time the people of the US took responsibility for educating their fellow citizens and ensuring that they stop using excuses like 'don't blame me, I didn't vote for him'
A vote for McCain will clearly be a vote for more war. His main platform seems to be his preparedness and willingness for it.
The idea that some US citizens (many who vote republican) can continue to support the Republican Party's policies of a missile defence shield in Poland, wars in the Middle East and support of Israel is baffling to an outsider.
I know Obama isn't a distinct difference, but the whole system is a result of the misinformation and poor knowledge of voting citizens in a nation whose Government is the most interventionist in the world for the last half century.
Part of what McCain is saying is designed to get the neocons to continue donating money and vote in November. He is not a neocon, and definitely not a neocon Frankenstein-like creation like Dubya. The challenge for Obama or McCain will mostly be undoing the damage from 8 years of lunacy.
John McCain's mental well being should be uppermost in the minds of all who truly are concerned about the direction this country has been driven into.
Any individual who has had formative years experiencing unusual pain and mistreatment can't convincingly make the case of having a steady, mature, unbiased, rational judgment, cooler heads, temperament.
Behind the smile, and deep within the mind, are all the ugly memories that nobody can ever get rid of.
We don't need a president that was imprinted with the Tiger Cages of North Viet Nam.
Orwell must have had a revelation when he wrote of perpetual war in 1984, either that, or his story line is being used as a handbook for creating a future devoid of humanity. We seem to be following the same path and it is depressing to the point of madness. War is Peace...Freedom is Slavery...and Ignorance is Strength. The only thing Orwell left out of that equation is the Fear Factor that drives the machine of dominance. When there appears to be a decline in support for the big war machine it is necessary to create new fears. Be afraid, be very, very afraid, not of the terrorists (boogeymen under the bed), but of those who promise to 'take care of us.'
"That today's enemies may be tomorrow's negotiating partners, as Obama has at times dared to suggest." This contrasts sharply to McCain's promise to make war with half the planet.
Also, McCain's disconnect to the economy is frightening-we have no problem-he has no problem is more like it.
It is too bad there in no viable 3rd party alternative, but I do not see much building of 3rd parties except in the months before presidential elections.
2 1/2 months to go.
war and death has been a hallmark of imperial america since the day they started the slaughter of the first nations
when andrew jackson slaughtered over 1000 seminoles and occupied/annexed florida - they made him president
immediately after the shock and awe in iraq americans were jerking off from coast to coast celebrating the death and bombs that were flying, as we all now know, on a shitpile of lies
this is the american way
always has been
cheers, b
Well said BrianD, we must not forget the bloody history of this country nor its quintessential genocidal nature. The fix has been in since the beginning of this presidential "campaign". Obama, much like Kerry, has the ability to lose to a complete idiot whether or not the vote is hacked. If, through some earthly miracle, Obama is "elected" the powers that be have ensured that his handlers are sufficiently embedded in the new world order that no real change will be possible.
If you are right, and I believe you are, McSame should fit right it as President.
With his idea that war will solve all problems, I figure we should be in WWIII within
two years of him taking office. I hope there is a God and he is on our side, because
we are going to need some REAL help with four more years of Bush politics.
