Presidential politics took a back seat to the Olympics Saturday night when the Rev. Rick Warren interviewed both candidates, back to back, at a forum broadcast on three cable networks.
Still, the so-called Saddleback Civil Forum was hyped as the opening shot of the fall campaign. It was billed as an opportunity for voters to watch the candidates answer identical questions. And it was analyzed in dozens of columns by political writers who by and large gave high marks to the performance of Sen. John McCain. In other words, it was an event with significance beyond its viewership.
Like other political junkies, I suspect, I flipped back and forth between the games and the candidates, eager to hear at least some of their answers to questions viewers were told were unrehearsed, unknown to either candidate and identical to both.
Now news has emerged that an event moderated by the leader of one of this country's biggest mega-churches was nothing short of dishonest. Warren had promised viewers that while Barack Obama was being interviewed first, John McCain would be isolated in a "cone of silence" so that he would hear neither questions nor answers. And he said the candidates had not been told the questions in advance.
The importance of this arrangement seemed obvious. For one thing, both candidates were supposed to participate under the same rules on a proverbial "level playing field." Fairness demanded it.
For another, as voters, we wanted to see how the candidates think and respond to spontaneous questions, not how well they spew pre-planned sound bites memorized on the trail.
Finally, deception had no place at a "nonpartisan" campaign event, particularly one sponsored by a church.
But it now appears that the forum was anything but fair. As the Christian Science Monitor's Vote blog, notes, "Seems that when John McCain was supposed to be in a soundproof vault Saturday night or as Saddleback church pastor Rick Warren put it, a 'cone of silence,' he was actually in his motorcade."
That means, despite McCain's assertion he didn't listen, the Republican senator's handlers could easily have heard Warren's questions, heard Obama's answers and prepped the candidate as he was arriving at the forum to answer identical questions.
It's a point that has been picked up in a few major news outlets. But it has gotten a lot less coverage than the glowing reviews of McCain's performance.
"It is now clear why Barack Obama has refused John McCain's offer of joint town hall appearances during the fall campaign," wrote columnist Michael Gerson in the Washington Post. "McCain is obviously better at them."
Well, Mr. Gerson -- and the rest of us, too -- would probably look darn good on stage if we knew the questions and our opponents' answers before we arrived.
The McCain campaign has feigned outrage at this suggestion, issuing a statement, asserting: "The insinuation from the Obama campaign that John McCain, a former prisoner of war, cheated is outrageous."
But please: Are we now supposed to believe that presidential politics operates on an academic honor system? It's awfully hard to give much credence to the McCain campaign's denial given the steady stream of negative ads its candidate already has used, including one comparing Obama to Paris Hilton and Britney Spears and three that the Annenberg School's nonpartisan www.factcheck.org notes contain "multiple false and misleading claims about Obama's tax proposals."
Let's get real. I suspect that had Obama gone second and been given the same opportunity, he, too, would have listened, even though he has sought in his rhetoric throughout this campaign to elevate the level of dialogue. Politics, it has been said, is blood sport. And never before have so many millions been poured into it.
As it turns out, both candidates and Warren play acted the discussion as if it were purely candid. Instead, the Post and others are now reporting, that both camps were given a general idea of the subject area in advance and sample questions actually used in the interviews, including a tough one about their "own greatest moral failure."
So what you saw on Saturday night now seems to have been a mix of showbiz and politics. All that was missing were the teleprompters.
If McCain broke the rules and watched Obama, he cheated. But the real blame lies not with candidate McCain but with the reverend or his staff for presenting the Saddleback forum one way but letting it play out another.
In an age of political cynicism, it's always hard to sort truth from fiction, to figure out whom and what to believe. When churches join the list of those bending the rules, the task gets that much harder.

I keep seeing the same thing over and over. McCain is old, he's senile, he's dumb.....how do you account for the fact that he won the nomination of hios party over even greater odds than Obama getting his? How do you account for the fact that for the moment he is winning?
I think there is just some wishful thinking going on here and if we don't get real, we'll be looking at President McCain come Jan. 1
Do you really want that?
"God" is man's attempt to name the great mystery. But once we name the mystery, we act as if we created it. . .out of our own image.
To those on this blog who are for John McCain, I'd like to say this: Why do you want 4 more years of Bush? Why do you want a multi-millionaire who left his disabled wife for a trophy wife with money to be the leader? Huh? Yes, that's right because under the Republican Party's control, the prez is just a figurehead, and the richest corporate powers will retain control over the rest of us, including the syncophants who troll the internet to argue for McCain, just for that little paycheck. Stop being so selfish and think about this country and how it is going down with this war, the economy, healthcare, etc.
"God" is a concept by which the religious claim divine authority for their opinions.

The "Seperation of Church and State" simply means there will be no Government Approved Religion (ex; Church of England)...it was never intended to remove religion from the public sector...in fact the term seperation of Church and State appears nowhere in the Constitution
I'm a bit of an Agnostic myself (although raised Catholic)but I am a purist when it comes to the Constitution...a document written by geniuses to govern idiots
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
Thats the first amendment...seperation of Church and State does not appear there..it was first coined by Thomas Jefferson in a letter in 1802...
Hope that was helpful
Jon Stewart had it right. It is theater. With both performers, with all their schedules, schedulers, managers, manipulators, advisers, rehearsals, teleprompters, caterers, and gofers, it is theater.
Obama can barely talk without a script, and in the primary debates he went blank every time he didn't have a memorized sound-bite to recite.
Jerry Lanson and other Obamabots constantly make ridiculous excuses for their stuttering hero, but this is a particularly silly example: Lanson admits that both candidates had a preview of the questions, but the possibility that McCain had a five-minute preview gives him an overwhelming advantage.
Harharharhar!!!
First the Obamabots try to sell the story that McCain is a doddering idiot, and then suddenly he's such a quick study that five minutes of prep-time is all McCain needs to make Obama look retarded.
Harharharhar!!!
Obamabots always want to have everything both ways, and Obama's little bag of tricks was good enough for the primaries, but he failed with his pathetic attempts to play the race card against McCain like he played it over and over and over against Hillary Clinton, and what else does he have? Just a few pitiful slogans, and Obama has already suckered all the suckers he can sucker with "Yes We Can!"
I'm confused.
I thought the US had a separation of church and state.
But now it seems that the US is as religiously motivated in it's politics as Saudi Arabia or Iran.
McCain has lost all credibility. I wonder now, about the POW stories he has kept in front of the media. Wringing them for all they are worth . . . and you'd think he was the ONLY prisoner of war ever. But many of us could do him one better, if we told the stories about the thousands that weren't captured in Vietnam, but were killed the first few weeks of duty, fresh out of highschool! Just like the young men that went to Iraq. But hey, McCain doesn't seem to care about them at all, he just thinks it is important to win!!!!

Rev. Gaddy sez (via Stephen V. Riley August 19th, 2008 2:49 pm): ""Some of the questions Pastor Warren posed crossed the line and promoted the fiction that the American people are electing a pastor-in-chief, rather than a commander-in-chief."
***
I'll see your fiction and raise you a deception, pastor.
American citizens were never meant to elect a commander-in-chief. The "president" is commander-in-chief only of the nation's armed forces, NOT of its citizenry.
Don't take my word for it. Here's a snippet from Article II, Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution:
"The President shall be Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the Militia of the several States, when called into the actual Service of the United States; ... "
Article I, by the way, contains an interesting view upon the declaration of "war", and who may or may not do so.
Magoo campaign sez: "The insinuation from the Obama campaign that John McCain, a former prisoner of war, cheated is outrageous."
***
Credit ncycat (5:22 p.m.) for picking up on this classic bit of propaganda. Go back and read that sentence without the extraneous clause "a former prisoner of war". The "insinuation" suddenly seems rather less "outrageous".
MiMiCcs, please prove your assertion that Obama's "The Audacity of Hope" was written by a ghost writer.
To all of the American voters.
It matters little who is "voted" president.
It matters little who is voted into office in either house.
The system is corrupt beyond measure and will do little to change the lives of the people who pay the taxes that make it all possible.
Since the begining of this experiment in "self governance", the political system has been corrupted by the people who have the control over the money---i.e. (I have stated this often) "America runs on the Golden Rule---them that got the Gold makes the rules"--
When the American people (many of them good people)----finally smarten up on this one fact; that the political system has been in the control of the "money people" from the begining----and will stay there until the American people make the necessary changes.
Expect there to be cheaters----usually those who would/could not win without cheating----to cheat. Liars to lie, and the really good liars to be really GOOD at it. But this may be what the American people really want.
Most people vote for the candidate they think will give THEM what they want----and could care less about the whole.
For those who wish to believe otherwise---you are doing exactly what the one's with the money want you to do----look the other way, and hope for the best.
For the American People as a whole if this is NOT what you really want-------
CHANGE IT..........YOU ARE THE ONLY ONES WHO CAN.
On a collective basis the American People ARE the "ones thats got the Gold----and they should be making the rules"-------
So you get what you pay for.
If you bought a "gizmo" that didn't work; you'd take it back for an exchange or your money back----
Why should your government be any different?
Anyways, we already know McCain is dumb. Obama just helped removed some of the doubt we had about him. Kind of explains why he won't go for the town hall debate format.
This is where there is little commonality between myself and this author:
On Saturday night I went out into the ACTUAL WORLD and enjoyed some time with friends!
I didn't even watch ONE MINUTE of Television, let alone the coming-out party for 21st century Authoritarianism or some stupid show featuring the "presidential candidates".
The illusion is that one is engaged in a different activity if one is watching different things on Television when in fact one is engaged in the same activity -sitting in front of a phosporescing screen of metal, listening to sounds and having images shot into your brain.
I'm sorry, maybe I'm weird, but why would I listen to ANYONE who can't find anything better to do than that on a Saturday night?
The parsing and examination of minutiae such as "whether McCain could hear and prepare for the questions that Obama was asked" just puts the pathetic-ness over the top.
Have Fun, loser.
-matti.
Kernel...keep telling yourself that...while your candidate sinks in the polls like a stone
The Democrats still have a chance...if they nominate Hillary...but if they do manage to dump this loser and nominate her...ALL the Superdelagates who spit in her face?

give that man a prize!...he nailed it
Obama is an idiot and the more he opens his mouth unscripted the more the world sees it...
he is the original empty suit candidate...and now the buyers remorse starts
craigdp___I disagree that Obama cannot think on his feet. The reason for the umms is precisely because he was thinking of the suitable answer to the questions. McCain, on the other hand, was obviously prepped and was ready for a series of canned speeches and hardly paid much attention to the questions. Also, he was performing for the crowd and directing his speech to them, instead of to the famous preacher who he was supposed to be answering.
This charade was just another example of the type of behaviour we get from all of the right-wing evangelicals. It works fine for a person if you are all ears and little brain. Too bad preacher didn`t ask McCain why if he is so pro-life, he is also pro-war which is not possible.
This is the behavior we can always depend on from the Christian conservatives--just win every skirmish, no matter how low they have to stoop to do it. Any one wanting 4 or 8 more years of this is evidently deaf, dumb, and blind.
The plain fact of the matter is that Mr. Obama 'Ummed' and 'Unnnhed' his through his answers as he is wont to do without a prepared text. It would not have mattered a bit if he had gone second or even if he had had a full text of McCain's answers with a crib sheet attached. The man simply can't think on his feet.
"The insinuation from the Obama campaign that John McCain, a former prisoner of war, cheated is outrageous."
I would ask why are they bringing up his stint as POW in this issue? Are we to believe that someone who got shot down while on a bombing raid is somehow an angel of virtue and truth? What kind of idiotic crap is that???
Just another example of how we are functioning like 13 year olds. Dishonest, manipulative, nasty thirteen year olds.
Some separation of church and state!! Perhaps the August surprise was a wee bit of constitutional roll-back precedent setting?
Now I'm no Obama bandwagoneer, and I'm highly sceptical that he isn't already firmly in the pocket of the MIC, but I must say that if Obama picks Joe Biden for VP.... they will get my vote. Whether Diebold will count it or not is another matter.
I do think you all are underating McCain. He may have some lapses that are indicative of his age, but he keeps going like the energizer bunny.
And at the moment, in case you didn't notice, he is winning.
The preacher lied about the "cone of silence". Then McCain lied about "listening through the wall". Sort of.
There's our lesson.
But, come on. Let's give McCain a pass. Just this once...
The level of this campaign is going plasma beyond ridiculous and an outrage beyond sanity

Unlike Bush, McCain has a brain. Problem is it is old and addled. It seems as if he can't remember at times just what the facts are or what he said recently. Four more years of a man that cannot elucidate his views nor feel the people's pain is unthinkable. He should retire to one of his ten houses, live the good life and leave America to a future without his questionable input. John McCain is not the man to lead America.
I was wondering why McCain was so in command for 40 minutes, and then the old stumbling memory-lost McCain took over when asked new questions.
- jkilby: "Are this fall's presidential election results a foregone conclusion"
Ok confused, One at a time. There will be fraud. Yes. There has been fraud in each of the last several elections. The US system is susceptible to this partially because unlike the stronger democracies, in America, the state governors and not an impartial body, run the election machinery. The states are all controlled by the duopoly and they work, legally within the current twisted system, to keep it that way.
-"it doesn't matter who the front man is as long as you can push their buttons."
Exactly. It doesn't matter, AS LONG AS you can push their buttons. Did you notice that the corporations give to the Dems and the Repugs? If I were a voter choosing between Pelosi and Sheehan, would it make any sense for me to give them both money? Either I want Pelosi to win or I want Sheehan to win, Because they are significantly different in the effect they will have on the country's future. So it is instructive that corporations give to both the Rs and the Ds but not to candidates like Sheehan.
-"There seems to be no shortage of examples where McBush clone gets a free ride where as Obomba has to account for everytime in his life that he has picked his nose"
Are you sure that McCain has gotten a free ride? It seems to me he gets a lot of criticism from those that think he is a senile jingoist to those that think he is a family values poseur.
If this interview had been in a Catholic cathedral before a conserative bishop, it would have been rightfully viewed as ridiculous.
The Rev. C. Welton Gaddy, president of Interfaith Alliance and a frequent critic of the role of faith in politics today, praised Warren, but said:
"Some of the questions Pastor Warren posed crossed the line and promoted the fiction that the American people are electing a pastor-in-chief, rather than a commander-in-chief. Questions like 'What does it mean to trust in Christ?' create a religious test for public office and should have no place in the political discourse for a secular office. America is the most religiously diverse country in the world, and Christianity is only one of those faith traditions. Millions of voters who tuned in tonight will feel disenfranchised by some of the questions posed in this forum. And both the candidates deserve criticism for engaging in a competition to be 'holier than thou.' The American people want real solutions for real issues. Discussing the personal theology of the candidates does little to elucidate those solutions."
I must admit I'm confused????
Are this fall's presidential election results a foregone conclusion as in the GOP will "steal" this election as they did in 2000/2004 with voter fraud, etc. or if the real power players behind the scene have already decided that its time for a Democrat to be president (who cares if its a woman or a person of color) because in the present two party system (meaning the one party system of unchecked greed) it doesn't matter who the front man is as long as you can push their buttons.
There seems to be no shortage of examples where McBush clone gets a free ride where as Obomba has to account for everytime in his life that he has picked his nose; unbiased media my ass. This sure doesn't support the second (conspiracy) theory presented above. So which is it?
Politics was founded to enforce religion. Religion was founded to validate politics. This is even more true of Chrisitanism in fact, imposed and canonized by a Roman emperor struggling to unify his empire, than of most other surviving faiths. The wall separating church and state in the US has always been made of glass: the law has enforced Christian values upon all, the pulpit has endorsed consensus politics – even rejecting its own founding role in the concept of socialism.
Like drinking and driving, religion and politics dont mix.
Please, dont pray and vote
Well, as always, the evangelical minister eventually goes down. Know we all know Pastor's Rick's true colors. The man is a liar and a hypocrite, just like the rest. "Cone of Silence" my a__!
John McCain didn't even answer half the questions, yet the audience applauded as though he spoke and the skies parted. When asked what to do about the 148-million orphans on earth, McCain gave the brief story of his wife bringing home a 5 week old baby. There's the answer. We all travel overseas and bring home a baby. After that we'll all go shopping.
This entire election scares me. No - terrifies me. There will be no winners.
HalleluYAH!!! Praise The Lord!
The political agenda is now being openly filtered through the religious beliefs of the Christian right. Sounds like Shia law. Religion and politics are both evil, that's why the founding fathers very clearly separated them from each other.
Hoa binh
The author is right. Pastor Rick should have started with Obama by pointing out that John McCain was en route and had not arrived to the building yet.
"In an age of political cynicism, it's always hard to sort truth from fiction, to figure out whom and what to believe. When churches join the list of those bending the rules, the task gets that much harder."
Why does it become harder? It's exactly the same. Just because someone says something in a church, doesn't mean it's true. What did people think? That because Warren is a pastor and he was sitting in a church, he's not going to lie for McCain, the very candidate he wants to win? How gullible can people be? Why Obama felt he had to answer the questions of a pastor in the first place, is still beyond me. Is he going to answer questions from an atheist, too? and why is everyone so surprised that McCain cheated? Hello?! The only way he's ever made himself appear to be better than his opponent is by lying.
Yeah, wouldn't that have been a comical sight? Pastor Rick up there with Cynthia McKinney!
It looks like the cone of silence is for the Green party leader.
