Anti-war Activist Cindy Sheehan on the Ballot
SAN FRANCISCO - Anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan qualified Friday for a November showdown with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, collecting the signatures needed to get on the ballot as an independent candidate for Congress.
"We're very excited," said Sheehan, 51, the mother of a soldier killed in Iraq who is well-known for her protest outside President Bush's Texas ranch. "Now we have to get organized and regroup."
Republican Dana Walsh and Libertarian Philip Berg will join Pelosi and Sheehan on the Nov. 4 ballot.
The collection of signatures by Sheehan's campaign was more exciting than usual. On Wednesday, the campaign was well short of the 10,198 signatures needed to get on the ballot after San Francisco elections officials found that more than 40 percent of the people who signed weren't registered in the city's Eighth Congressional District.
Sheehan's supporters redoubled their efforts to collect enough signatures to beat the 5 p.m. Friday deadline, ultimately turning in more than 17,000 signatures to ensure that she qualified.
"It was a little disconcerting to see all the problems with the signatures," Sheehan said from her Mission Street headquarters, where more than 100 supporters gathered to celebrate. "The last couple of days, I've been checking the registrations myself on the computer."
With her ballot spot guaranteed, Sheehan can focus on the fall campaign, where she will challenge Pelosi from the left, slamming the speaker for refusing to start impeachment proceedings against President Bush and not taking a stronger stance against the war in Iraq.
"The next part is going to be exciting," she said. "I want at least one debate with all four candidates so that Nancy Pelosi has to answer for her record."
Sheehan, a former Vacaville resident who lives in the Mission District, became involved in the anti-war movement in 2004, after her son Casey was killed while serving in Iraq. A year later she founded Gold Star Families for Peace and spoke out against the war in Iraq.
For months, she stayed at "Camp Casey," an area near President Bush's Crawford, Texas, ranch where she and other peace activists demonstrated against Bush and the war.
Sheehan will be the longest of longshots in her attempt to oust Pelosi, one of the nation's best-known and most powerful Democrats.
While Sheehan said Friday that she has raised more than $300,000 for the race, Pelosi had collected more than $2.3 million by the end of June and had $455,138 in the bank.
Sheehan's campaign also missed the July 15 filing deadline for her most recent federal campaign statement, which Sheehan blamed on the frantic efforts to qualify her campaign for the ballot.
"One of the first things we need to do is hire a professional accountant to deal with those reports," she said.

Show AllOne significant battle fought and won. If I was retired I'd move to that district. I am concerned about the Lieberman (crossover) effect but I have hope for our nation and that the people of our nation will finally stop the 'blind" following, quit being sheep!, and start voting for statesman. Cindy, YOU GO GIRL! When elected, please remember that your votes in the house affect not only your constituents but our whole nation and when another american contacts you about a "problem" don't blow them off like a politician just because they can't vote for you, be the kind of statesperson that has been lacking for decades. God Bless
Congratulations on getting on the ballot!!! (:
I don't expect you to win, but there is great value in running a good campaign with integrity and honesty and true progressive values!! (:
I ran for city council in a VERY progressive district. I lost. He's a "nice guy", a Democrat, and he often votes progressively but he is mired in the muck of the Democratic party on too many issues. (The race had no incumbent). The psychology of the "D" after a candidate's name is hard to beat, but we can chip away at it. MORE of us need to run, and not worry about winning, just to chip away at both corporate imperialist parties.
Way to go Cindy. I just know you are going to win!
Best news of the year. You take good care Cindy, you're in the political "Lions" Den. They are powerful and vicious.
What should be best of all will be if there are any candidates forums. It will be delicious to see Sheehan sweating Pelosi on Iraq and seeing if the House Majority Leader can react competently off-the-cuff.
...and get ready for the most vicious attacks against Cindy to come from the Democrats, not the Republicans.
Go figure...
Clap! Clap! Clap! Clap! Clap! Clap! Clap! Clap! Send in the Pink Grannies!
I'm going to go right now and donate a little to her campaign although I'm in Jersey.
Cindy, I just KNOW you're going to stop by, so allow me to holler:
☮★ Woo-Hoo! ★☮
☮★ Woo-Hoo! ★☮ ☮★ WOO-HOO! ★☮
Ahem. There, that should do it.
I couldn't be more pleased; I was so concerned that you'd be sandbagged and clotheslined by low-level bureaucratic dirty tricks, and be tossed into the Memory Hole without even having a chance to mount the home stretch of your campaign.
Oh, this is gonna cost me! But I'm thrilled for the chance to dispose some more income to perhaps THE worthiest political cause of the century!
8) ♥ Go, Cindy! ♥ 8)
☮★ WOO-HOO! ★☮
I adore Cindy Sheehan and I think her involvement in the political system is very very welcome.
little brother,
Are those "woo-hoos" supposed to have exclamation points?
Best of luck Cindy.
Yet another attempt by the San Francisco Chronicle to diminish the signicance of Cindy's victory, stating "Sheehan will be the longest of long shots in her attempt to oust Pelosi..." What a crock of shit! Typical corporate media in Pelosi's pocket. Instead of reading the rag, the most practical use for it is as a birdcage liner!
USAn-- Yeah, why not? I consider "woo-hoo!" to be an exclamation, don't you?
And I'm sure glad I didn't have to exclaim "d-oh!" instead... ;)
Three cheers for the people of San Francisco for putting Cindy on the ballot. Three cheers for all who have supported Cindy's campaign, and most importantly, three cheers for Cindy Sheehan for getting involved and running for Congress against Bush's friend, Nancy Pelosi.
We're one step closer now to honest government.
I think that this is something that Cindy must do for herself. For not by herself.
We all hope for the best but this particular outcome does not matter very much as this will be a generations long struggle against the corporate corruption of America's government.
Remember David & Goliath. Go Cindy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sending contribution post haste. Good luck

More fresh air ...
I love you Cindy. You are the will of the people. I also love S.F. Am proud of you! You represent the true love of a mother and an American global citizen. Way to be. Pelosi cant even hold a candle next to you.

Dear Cindy:
Today is my birthday and I just got tears in my eyes seeing this stately photo of you, and recognizing how much you have accomplished, speaking for ALL of us so courageously!
August 9 is powerful, as it links with a major eclipse cycle... the one that has seen historical events like Nixon's resignation and the bombing of Hiroshima (or was that Nagasaki?), and now YOU upsetting the petri dish of insider politics "as usual."
When I look at this photo I see you as a major statesman, what I "get" is that you were a male who was influential in the time of the forming of this republic. This lifetime, coming in to round out the feminine side of the soul's experience, led to the tragic loss of your son which also has acted as catalyst to get you back into politics JUST when this country needs it! Thank you for doing all that you do... I believe I speak for most in the forum in saying you speak for us and we ARE with you!
I will send another check this week.
Way to go, Cindy!! Yours is a campaign worth contributing to even though I don't live in CA. YOU are worth it and your ideals and integrity far surpass any candidate currently running.
Good news, for a change.
Congratulations Cindy Sheehan. You're giving the people of San Francisco's Eighth Congressional District a chance to walk the walk on election day. What a wonderful thing - democracy. When those individuals enter those voting booths they can declare to the world their position in the class war, the grand-daddy of all wars. They can vote Sheehan, and thereby take their place among the people or they can vote Pelosi and take their place among elites. This choice is about as clear as it gets.
Way to go Cindy. Here's something from youtube to pass on to all those Pelosi supporters: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LUlhmOQEI_M
As A Canadian I really have no say in your elections Cindy, but I wish you the very best of luck and hope you come out the winner. It is enlightening to know that you speak for so many Americans who also want to see an end to corruption, cronyism and militarism.
pk
Go Cindy!
pelosi failed the people she was supposed to represent uniformly, on 1,000 fronts. what a wonderful statement to elitist-politicos if cindy sheehan succeeded in kicking pelosi out on her ass via a populist vote!
As I write this I can see across the bay. The fog is lifting and the city seems brighter than usual. Congratulations dear Cindy.
GWNORTH
as a brit, i second that..................good luck ms. sheehan. you are a very courageous woman.
Congratulations for being a candidate Cindy. Best wishes to you :-)
One more baby step beyond the stranglehold of the bicameral one-party system.
Congratulations, Cindy Sheehan. Good luck.
Thank you for your courage and tenacity.
You bring hope to us and we are grateful.
Happy B'day Siouxrose.
Hey Siouxrose,
Happy Birthday!!!
A heartfelt "GO, CINDY, GO!" from this Canuck!
I'm so glad Cindy made it onto California's ballot. I'm not from CA, so I can't vote for her. But, if I could I would!
Good luck Cindy! Nice to have choices in an election.

send her money, oust the crooks. this is a truly national struggle.
Congratulations, Cindy...
not only for calling "Horseshit!" on the lies of the powers that be (many of us here do that), but especially for having the focus, tenacity, and integrity to amplify your voice and actions so that the sleepwalking citizens and the "powers that be" will hear your message. No telling if they'll listen, but at least you will not be silenced.
Dear Friends,
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR AMAZING SUPPORT!
As you know, I often read the posts on Common Dreams because I find it to be one of the last bastions of non-partisanship and I get some great insight here...but also great support even though they don't post my articles anymore due to CD's non-profit status, I think.
I promise not to disappoint you and to stick to progressive principles to help humanity: peace, environmental sustainability, economic equality, single-payer healthcare and free, quality education as a human right.
It was an extremely difficult task to qualify for the ballot, but we did it and we did it with our integrity intact...win or lose (and I think we have a great chance of winning even though we haven't raised "2.3" million dollars) we will do it with our integrity intact.
But, win or lose, I promise that the struggle to wrest the control of our nation (and world) from the hands of the corporate fascists will continue.
This is huge, I am only the 6th candidate in California history to qualify as an independent...it hasn't been done by a Congressional candidate since 1996, and then it wasn't in SF against the Queen of the Corporatists, Nancy Pelosi.
Again, I am deeply grateful for your support, for you love and for your integrity.
Love
Cindy
(Happy Birthday Sioux Rose, I received your beautiful book, it is on my desk at Campaign HQ)
Go Cindy! Putting the Constitution out of reach of citizens is not part of her job description. Pelosi is incredibly corrupt in addition to being a danger to democracy.
She's powerful because she controls a lot of money not because she is competent. She is a poster child for why we need public campaign financing.
Congratulations to Cindy. Best of luck in her campaign and she'll need it. She's now in the race aginst the elite, corporate, DNC approved candidate.
The news of Sheehan's victory in obtaining the needed signatures, is indeed great news.
This could be the start of a much larger movement. If Sheehan can force a dialog with Pelosi on the issues then perhaps mainstream Democrats will be forced to admit they merely and really part of the Demopublican Party.
Now the voters of Pelosi's district will determine once and for all, do the majority of people feel that the war and impeachment are important issues that will make or break this election, or is that talk just empty rhetoric suitable to make them feel better.
This is one of the few elections in the country that is offering a real choice.
I wonder what the reality of the voter's position really is, are we really complicit with the corporate status quo, or are we willing to get out of our comfort zone and vote for justice and peace.
peace, and hope for Cindy Sheehan, you have my support.
"Sheehan will be the longest of longshots in her attempt to oust Pelosi, one of the nation's best-known and most powerful Democrats."
Let's hope that those who know her name also know that she has done nothing to move this country forward; worst of all, she has allowed George W. Bush to continue acting as "Emperor" of the United States. Does she not realize as Speaker of House that United States citizens vote for presidents and not emperors?
Nancy Pelosi declared impeachment "off the table." Now it is the people through Cindy Sheehan who says that Nancy Pelosi is off the table, out of her spearker's position and out of the house.
Cindy, I'm sure you know that poltics, as Bill Clinton so uneloquently put it, is a contact sport but you've got the right stuff. Give Nancy Pelosi hell!
Congratulations, Cindy!
You've given me a real lift in this dismal campaign season.
Now go out there and stick it to the Wicked Witch of the West.
Today the people of the 8th district of San Francisco have been given an opportunity in November to vote for the earth community or for the empire.
Wish it was so clear a choice in candidates for all the other thousands of districts in which there is a need for earth community candidates. I can think of only one other right now. John Wages - Mississippi.
We are sooo far from where we need to be I am not sure what one or two radicals might do in the halls of Congress but on a positive note I am gladwe have the chance to send them there.
After Cindy serves 4 years in Congress and does her best to fight the corrupt system just like Mr. Smith did but maybe even harder this time, maybe we can have
CINDY SHEEHAN FOR PRESIDENT IN 2012
assuming of course that either Obama or Mccain is the incumbent by then.
I think this is the first article here at CD where EVERYONE agrees!!!! This is a good omen, Cindy. I predict a landslide victory for you.
Oh yeah...I agree, too. Best news I've had in a long, long time. To quote Little Brother...
WOO-HOO!
Big smiles and lot's of prayers....
