WASHINGTON - President Bush committed an impeachable offense by ordering the CIA to to manufacture a false pretense for the Iraq war in the form of a backdated, handwritten document linking Saddam Hussein and al-Qaeda, an explosive new book claims.
The charge is made in "The Way of the World: A Story of Truth and Hope in an Age of Extremism" by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Ron Suskind, released today.
Suskind says he spoke on the record with U.S. intelligence officials who stated that Bush was informed unequivocally in January 2003 that Saddam had no weapons of mass destruction. Nonetheless, his book relates, Bush decided to invade Iraq three months later - with the forged letter from the head of Iraqi intelligence to Saddam bolstering the U.S. rationale to go into war.
"It was a dark day for the CIA," Suskind told TODAY co-host Meredith Vieira on Tuesday. "It was the kind of thing where [the CIA] said, 'Look, this is not our charge. We're not here to carry forth a political mandate - which is clearly what this was - to solve a political problem in America.' And it was a cause of great grievance inside of the agency."
The author writes that Bush's action is "one of the greatest lies in modern American political history" and suggests it is a crime of greater impact than Watergate. But the White House is denying the allegations, calling the book "absurd" and charging that Suskind practices "gutter journalism."
Former CIA director George Tenet also released a statement in which he ridicules the credibility of Suskind's sources and calls the White House's supposed directive to forge the document as "a complete fabrication."
But Suskind stands by his work. "It's not off the record," he says. "It's on the record. It's in the book and people can read it for themselves."
Prelude to war
Suskind reports that the head of Iraqi intelligence, Tahir Jalil Habbush, met secretly with British intelligence in Jordan in the early days of 2003. In weekly meetings with Michael Shipster, the British director of Iraqi operations, Habbush conveyed that Iraq had no active nuclear, chemical or biological weapons programs and no stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction.
When Tenet was informed of the findings in early February, he said, "They're not going to like this downtown," Suskind wrote, meaning the White House. Suskind says that Bush's reaction to the report was: "Why don't they ask him to give us something we can use to help make our case?"
Suskind quotes Rob Richer, the CIA's Near East division head, as saying that the White House simply ignored the Habbush report and informed British intelligence that they no longer wanted Habbush as an informant.
"Bush wanted to go to war in Iraq from the very first days he was in office. Nothing was going to stop that," Richer is quoted in the book.
Suskind also writes that Habbush was "resettled" in Jordan with help from the CIA and was paid $5 million in hush money.
Vieira questioned Suskind's contentions, pointing out that a number of intelligence figures eventually wrote Habbush off as unreliable.
"No, that's not exactly the way it worked," Suskind countered. "In the book, you'll see people who are involved and talking about the debate, and it was quite a fierce debate at the highest levels of the government: 'Is Habbush reliable? What's he saying? How can we check it?'
"And a lot of people, at the end of the day, said it was hard for him to prove the negative, that what he said was no weapons were actually not there. That's hard to do."
The letter
On page 371 of "The Way of the World," Suskind describes the White House's concoction of a forged letter purportedly from the hand of Habbush to Saddam Hussein to justify the United States' decision to go to war.
Suskind writes: "The White House had concocted a fake letter from Habbush to Saddam, backdated to July 1, 2001. It said that 9/11 ringleader Mohammed Atta had actually trained for his mission in Iraq - thus showing, finally, that there was an operation link between Saddam and al-Qaeda, something the Vice President's office had been pressing CIA to prove since 9/11 as a justification to invade."
He continues: "A handwritten letter, with Habbush's name on it, would be fashioned by CIA and then hand-carried by a CIA agent to Baghdad for dissemination."
CIA officers Richer and John Maguire, who oversaw the Iraq Operations Group, are both on the record in Suskind's book confirming the existence of the fake Habbush letter.
When asked by Vieira for further proof of the letter, Suskind said: "Well, the CIA folks involved in the book and others talk about George Tenet coming back from the White House with the assignment on White House stationery, and turning to the CIA operatives, who are professionals, and saying, 'You may not like this, but here is our next mission.'
"And they carried it through step by step, all the way to the finish."
The London Sunday Telegraph first published a story about the letter in December 2003, on the same day that Saddam Hussein was captured in Iraq. Reported as genuine, the letter made an immediate impact upon the media in terms of justifying the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq. Suskind relates how NBC reported the letter, with journalist Con Coughlin telling Tom Brokaw that the letter "is really concrete proof that al-Qaeda was working with Saddam."
Suskind also quotes Alan Foley, head of WMD analysis for the CIA, as saying, "It is, in my opinion, true that the administration, for whatever reason, was determined to have a showdown with Iraq that predated this whole WMD stuff."
In support of that theory, Foley says that Naji Sabri, Saddam's foreign minister, passed along information that Iraq had no WMD to a Lebanese journalist who served as an intermediary on behalf of the CIA in 2002.
That intelligence, Suskind writes, was dismissed as "disinformation."
Suskind's credentials
So why, Vieira asked, are Suskind's sources finally speaking out now, more than five years after the war began?
"Well, you know, a lot of them have been walking around with this lump in their chest for a couple of years - five years now," Suskind replied. "And because they're essentially free - they're not the original source - they said, 'Look, why hide now? Let's trust the truth.' "
Suskind said it took about seven months to get his storied "nailed." "I'd done this sort of thing for a while, and the way it worked was there were off-the-record sources who played out the story, and then I went to people actually involved," he told Vieira.
"They were freed up because they're not the original source, if you will ... to sort of talk about the context, what they felt, what they did [and] the people actually involved. And of course they're all, through the book, on the record talking about how it all worked."
Suskind, who reported for The Wall Street Journal from 1993 to 2000, won a Pulitzer Prize for feature writing in 1995 for stories of inner-city honors students in Washington, D.C. His reports spawned book-club favorite "A Hope in the Unseen: An American Odyssey from the Inner City to the Ivy League" in 1998.
Two stories Suskind wrote for Esquire in 2002 gave readers an inside account of the Bush White House. The second, which ran in the December 2002 issue, raised eyebrows as John DiIulio, the former head of the White House Office of Faith-based and Community Initiatives, described a presidency driven by politics over policy - "the reign of the Mayberry Machiavellis."
"The Price of Loyalty," Suskind's 2004 book on former U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Paul O'Neill, said that the U.S. occupation of Iraq and subsequent overthrow of Saddam Hussein were planned in January 2001 - nine months before the Sept. 11 attacks.
His most recent book, 2006's "The One Percent Doctrine," also described the Bush administration's willingness to let its post-Sept. 11 foreign policy be driven by suspicion over proof of weapons of mass destruction. It also claimed al-Qaeda leaders were plotting to attack the New York City subway system in 2003.
In "The Way of the World," Suskind describes President Bush as "a guy who needs to make things personal" and someone who "doesn't think in large strategic terms." He also says the president has "always been a bit of a bully."
HarperCollins Publishers is printing 500,000 copies of the book and HCP executive editor Tim Duggan was quoted in Monday's Wall Street Journal as saying Suskind "wrote it as fast as possible and we're publishing it as fast as possible because there is news in the book and we don't want to sit on it."

I don't think the requisite changes are available through a civil dialog between civilized people holding different political views.
I do think that, if we can figure out how to elect such people, they would be good candidates for governing.
But I think some heads are going to have to roll to give that a chance. The fraud wrought by energy futures, by the Cheney corporate progeny, and by more general thieves hiding behind an ideology of laissez-faire capitalism, the medical profiteers, those who are unable to support some sort of job for everyone who shows up for some work and cannot abide a liveable minimum wage will not go peacefully nor be persuaded by a good idea who's time has come.
Leadership is about getting people to do something they need to do but don't feel "predisposed" to whatever that might be. We can't even get there without restoring basic faith that evil-doers will be punished regardless of the power they hold.
I doubt there is reconcilability in these opposing forces.

BTW, thanks for visiting all of us out here in "loony left land." I really do think a civil dialouge is desperately needed in this country among people of good will who hold differing political views... and you strike me as such a person.
Also, we get all sorts of unusual posters from time to time here at CD. Miftin's a new one, to me anyway, and I've been coming here for about 2 years now. Please know that such nakedly obvious anti-Semitism is NOT the norm here. Many of us have principled critiques of the abusiveness of the regimes in Tel Aviv vis-a-vis the Palestinians, but most of us have the sanity and breadth of historical perspective to steer clear of the sort of feverish racism he indulges in.
Enn presents a good example of the vacuousness of so much New Agey thinking. He really says almost nothing, with the air of transcendent wisdom looking down on we mere mortals thrashing about in our "sillivization." He's going to build a brave new world while we sit picking over the corpse of the old one.
Jeez, how pretentious and tiresome. What magic wand will you be waving, Enn, to bring into being this "Life" the rest of us are too corrupted and coarse to see or understand? Do you really think you and your super-enlightened company are the only ones who knew how corrupt this society has been for years? You alone hold the keys to Truth, while the rest of us bicker and dither over dead stuff. It's like a New Age version of Christian apocalyptists, and equally tedious.

It's not one that can be fought, by 20th Century 'thinking', but we don't expect those who swipe at nothing to grok this at all, it is beyond their grasp, which is why they pick at the corpse of dead civilization for sustenance.

The preponderance of truth, evidence and its corresponding lack of justice tells us all we need to know of the degree and state of corruption present at this funeral of empire. All that we Reasonable and Rationale human beings who affirm Life and its value in all forms already knew without the requirement of such a damning weight of evidence. We know already that this sillivization is corrupt. In our hearts we left it behind long ago, and our minds have been consistently working to bring Life back to center stage. The lack of justice in the face of such evidence confirms what we already knew.

As for Suskind, maybe his book will draw attention to what most of us have known since 2002 or '03. Not that I expect it to make any real difference, since nothing does under this criminal regime. What's next? another book about how the elections of 2000 and '04 were stolen? My goodness, who'd have ever guessed that? Or maybe another expose on how W has always had everything handed to him on a silver platter and was always a petulant bully, using his privileged status to his petty personal advantage. Then we'll get justice!
Revolution meaning more of us on a personal level resist the stuff that puts us to sleep, or keeps us busy with shopping and consuming. Increased organization and participation in mass marches (a thing of the past?), those folks with funds to invest do so, in research to solve our crisis' (work apart from the govt.), find a cause, just one that speaks to your heart and is an outrage to be corrected, and devote some spare time to it.

I fear you are right on. I share your suspicions and think we've been made drones by the various "opiates" both real and figurative fed to us.
It may also be true that if the Dems./Obama wins the election, that it'll be just a different dress on the same model underneath. But, I am holding on to a shred of hope. I would like to see the restoration of the country, the Constitution, our respectability in the world of nations, and the mind-set of "can do" in the recognition of the crisis' that require immediate action.

Since the release of the Downing Street Memo, the snowball of truth has been gathering momentum. Documentaries about the 911 attack as a conspiracy and the Iraq invasion, SEE "BUSH'S WAR" (which has been replayed on public television recently), have done much to educate our citizens, but....The horrifying possibility that NOTHING will be done about it all chills me to the bone.

Look, we've been living in the Matrix (or 1984 revisited) for a very long time. The "free" press has been gone for decades, and we've just been fed all lies, very slowly over time, to acclimate us to be in the position we've been for the past 8 years. Accepting whatever is on the TV or the radio or in the papers as "the way it really is" - the Truth.
We've been distracted by entertainment, and scared to death by government-sponsored (or, covered-up) events, and spun around in all directions by the MSM and in particular, the "journalism" of Faux news. Rove and his ilk have just embellished the Goebbels dictum (I think it was Goebbels): Tell the big lie and repeat it over and over again, do that enough and the big lie will become truth.
Suskind's book is just one more prescription to help us along the way to recovery. It's gonna take a while - but it appears it may be starting to sink in with some that the folks who've been running this country and, indeed, the world, do not have the best interests of it's citizens or humanity at heart.
Each of us who has known or is beginning to really undertand this must spread the word to everyone: family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, anyone you come in contact with. What harm then--except to the Dems--would there be in having open hearings in the House Judiciary Committee? And don't the members of the Judiciary Committee now have a Constitutional duty that goes beyond partisan politics to schedule hearings? If we now have 2 CIA agents on the record claiming that they manufactered intel to start a war, shouldn't this at least be investigated with at least as much fervor as Clinton was investigated for lying about a blow job?
Bush said, publicly, at least 3 times, on TV, that all Saddam Hussein had to do was to allow the UN arms inspectors back in to avert the war. Of course we know that the arms inspectors were allowed in, they reported that Saddam Hussein was cooperating with them and that they only left because Bush told them to (or else they would be in danger due to the start of the war).
These outrageous statements were made on TV yet the press hardly mentioned or vigorously challenged them. Weren't these statement grounds for impeachment?

The British do not use "fixed" as snowolf suggests. Fixed is rigged or manipulated or cooked.
Snowolf has yet to offer any evidence that Saddam was pretending to have WMDS. That was simply an excuse trotted out after the fact, cooked up in back rooms by spin doctors.
He refers to claims that the Iraqis were moving paperwork out the back door as inspectors waited out the front.
Again more spin doctoring. In the inpections of the 1990's the CIA was using the cover of the weapons inspectors to spy on Military assets. These assets were NOT mandated by the UN to be inspected and included trooop deployments, locations of Republican guard untits and details on the air defense system.
Were I the iraqis I would be moving this stuff out the back door as well.
If he suggests this happened during the second set of inspections, then not only would I want evidence but I would suggest Snowolf rethink the timeline and come up with something more logical.
As to what would a reasonable man do. Now were I a "reasonbale man" and were I to believe that a hostile country which I was tasked with invading had stockpiles of WMDS , and that these were the deadliest chemical weapons known to man and these same weapons were capable of killing thousands or more of my troops in a single strike, or tens of thousands of civilians, I woudl ensure those KNOWN WMDS, located in their KNOWN sites, were the very first thing I neutralized.
What did the US Military do instead? They bypassed these very sites. The "alleged" sites were plundered. They decided it more important to secure oil refineries, terminals wells and Ministries.
A reasonable man would conclude they decided those stockpiles of WMDS, the deadliest weapons known to man posed no threat.
Fixed is just one of those words...isn't English wonderful?
Now that it is patently obvious that the Bush Mis-administration is a criminal, lying, sociopathic organization that lied to justify their invasion of the Middle East oil fields that has murdered 100's of thousands to date, including the needless deaths of over 4,000 US Soldiers.....

This is not news! Most of us knew it 5 or more years ago! His facts didn't fit the allegations then! It's just a lot of American mistakenly gave him the benefit of the doubt when it wasn't deserved. After all, we are talking about a man who didn't win the 2000 election but had his daddy's supreme court install him as President. And more than likely hijacked the 2004 election to make certain he stayed in office. He is obviously a man of no ethic's what so ever. At least, I haven't seen a glimmer of any in the last 7 1/2 years he has been in office. In fact, he is corrupt to the core. So like I said before this isn't anything new!

Many USan progressives here and elsewhere seem inclined to dismiss comments like those of SnowWolf as being ill-informed or worse. That is understandable, of course. But, in so doing, they fail to acknowledge and deal with their country's most important political reality.
In fact, a self-justifying system of beliefs and selective understanding of available "facts" predominates everywhere. The U.S. political establishment is just more adept at its exploitation than most others and, based on most examples, vastly more skilled in its manipulation than the few isolated progressives amongst the U.S. populace could ever hope to be.
If Obama is the poster child for political expediency that he is painted as by many astute observers, the opposite characteristic seems very prevalent amongst the progressive community. All things considered, the long careful planning of the neo-cons and their allies (corporate, religious, etc.) has payed off in spades and appears likely to continue to do so until the imperial "final curtain" rings down.
But that's just my cynical POV as usual.

I haven't read more of the article than this, but if the rest is similar, then the article is WRONG. The CIA did NOT provide WMD backing for Bush; the CIA analysts working for Sec Def Donald-ducky Rumsfeld refused to comply with his demands and were replaced with the OSP, Office of Special Planning, or some such name, and damn hellbent 'special' it was. The team gave Donald-ducky or -duckaroonie Rumsfeld everything he wanted, while the CIA refused to give him ... like anything at all of what he wanted; not being able to agree with him on ... basically anything at all.
But we again get blaming of the CIA; only the to-be-faulted wasn't the CIA.
Who are all of these experts who claim the contrary but provide no proof and totally overlook the OSP?!
Oh, no, I'm not CIA, btw, and I don't think I'd ever want to be; unless a-la Frank Serpico sort, say. He did not shy from focusing on the worst crimes, [internal] sh*t and most CIA do, shy. Not him. But I will not blame the CIA when the guilty party was the fabricated OSP!
OSP was not CIA, but may have had some members who were. I read that there were also private "security" (ie, mercenary) firms, and maybe other MIC contractors, NOT only CIA, and of the people involved, apparently none were seasoned analysts; all just a bunch of "yesmen".
So what's the truth. Was this slop-assed OSP the culprit, or was it really CIA? We know it was Donald-duckerafoonie or -fiendie Rumsfeld, but what about the rest of the team?

Do some research into the Ford Foundation that provides major funding to the sanctioned "left" media crowd here in the U.S. I enjoy reading Mother Jones as much as anyone. Sitting in a public library and reading Mother Jones many, many years ago probably solidified my socialist leanings more so than reading Chomsky later on. And it's been more than twenty years of it for me, and not only do things not get any better, things just keep getting worse. Then I get on Common Dreams and mention that I listen to Radio Havana Cuba on a regular basis, and somebody says "Aha! That's your problem!" As though everything is just my own personal problem rather than the fact that practically all of our media in the United States is being meticulously controlled by people who "stand beside Israel." If some writer, even on CounterPunch or Z-Net came right out and said "OK, I would recommend dismantling the Israeli government because it's obviously a failed state" I'd just sit there staring at the words in disbelief.
What world do you live in, anyway? I'll tell you what world you live in--you live in the world of privilege. You have personal computers in your homes and broadband connections. You have private automobiles that don't break down all the time. You can even afford to buy books and journals, and for now, at least, you can even afford to access web-sites like this one and vent your spleen albeit to a fairly limited audience. I could see this catastrophy unfolding lie by lie and yet I was completely powerless to stop it.
But those who swallowed the media coolaid simply were not paying attention. Anyone who cared to know could have known that Saddam had the WMD. And given that we sold him half the stuff in the first place, anyone could have known that the war had nothing to do with WMD. My prime minister John Howard lied on a daily basis for this. ASIO (our CIA) knew that there was absolutely no truth in the continued lies, but rather than state the obvious, that the WMD had already been destroyed, they came up with a far more diplomatic one that said that there was simply no evidence that Saddam still had WMD. That, of course, was not quite the report wanted by John Howard. So ASIO was threatened and forced to come up with a report that echoed John Howard's and George Bush's lies. Several ASIO personnel resigned as a result of that. But our media, mostly controlled by zionist Rupert Murdoch trumpeted the "new" report from then on.
I note that the troll has come up with zero evidence of the WMD so far, because there simply was not any. Oh yes, and the democrats lied too. And anyone who would not lie was sidelined by the media. Claiming that Saddam pretended to be a threat to the world is REALLY trying to turn the truth on its head. But I guess the troll serves to remind us that there really are people telling such lies, and we need to shout the truth loudly.

Did Karl Marx actually make any money on his writings during his lifetime? Did he even care? Did he have a publisher sifting through his work approving it? Did he do book tours at Barnes and Nobel? Was he booked on Democracy Now, plugging his book? Did The Nation or Mother Jones publish a few advance passages just to whet the left book buying public whistle?
I'm really beginning to get sick of all this posturing. I'm surrounded by these books. I would point out that CSIS informed our own PM behind closed doors that the case made for Saddam having WMDS was weak at best and that there very likely was none.

Saddam never once suggested he might still have weapons. Please cite a speech were he said as much. He released a hundreds of pages document claiming he did not have them and detailing how they were dismantled. This is a fact.

Try making the case in a public forum that Israel is a failed state and should be actively dissolved. In fact, try making the case in a public forum that Israel isn't a state at all, but is merely a land grab by a bunch of racists. Don't just call for a "two state solution" make a public case for the dissolution of Israel on the basis of ongoing crimes against humanity. Don't just pronounce that if the government of Israel doesn't wise up it's going to fall, make an actual case for the deliberate dissolution of the artificial Zionist entity before it does anymore damage.
Come on, Jewish writers. Go beyond even the so-called one-state solution proposed by Joel Kovel in his book "Overcoming Zionism." Every Israeli government since 1948 has been a government of death. And if it's not written by a Jewish person, it's written by someone who supports the right-wing Israeli government or it's not published at all in the United States. When was the last time you saw a book written by a non-Jewish person that (even mildly) criticizes the government of Israel who isn't a former U.S. president? Jewish people are allowed to criticize Jewish people in books and articles, but non-Jewish people aren't allowed to criticize Jewish people in books and articles in major U.S. media. Such criticism is therefore relegated to such web sites as CounterPunch, and even there, half the time the article criticizing Zionism or the government of Israel is written by a Jewish writer.
You've got people in here all the time talking about the Rothchilds Banking empire and dual Israeli citizenship among top U.S. government officials, AIPAC controlling the U.S. political process, Zionist control over U.S. media in the area of the so-called Palestinian Conflict. So why am I not allowed to mention the fact that if you happen to be a Jewish person you seem to have a much higher access to having your voice heard in U.S. media, including the book publishing industry, than if you aren't a Jewish person? Why does that suddenly liken me to a 1930s German citizen? Perhaps they were saying the same thing in 1930s Germany because it was true over there also. Who knows?
But I'll tell you one thing, if you are trained as a professional librarian and you aren't a Jewish person and criticize the policies of the Israeli government in regard to its treatment of the Palestinians, don't expect to ever work in a library unless it's a prison library--the kiss of death for a library professional in this country. Hell, you can hardly even get close to anything at all having to do with books in the United States unless you are a Jewish person--or are simply buying and reading them. If you are an ordained Christian minister you can't even get close to a pulpit unless you support Zionism. And if you criticism Zionism from the pulpit, you'll end up serving in some little Podunk town for the rest of your career as a hospital chaplain because the denomination won't trust you to stand behind a pulpit.
I listen to Radio Havana Cuba on most nights, and they are often very critical of the actions of the Israeli government in their news reports and feature stories being beamed into the United States. I once visited the studios of RHC in Havana and every one of the on-air personalities broadcasts under an alias for fear of very real and threatening political retribution. Every year there is also an international book fair in the streets of Havana, and Cuban street vendors actually sell books year-round. I've even heard that it's not necessary to be a Jewish person to be a librarian in Cuba! But of course, you have to be a Jewish person like Nat Hentoff to rail against Cuban libraries (as Cuban state propaganda) and Cuban librarians (as mere functionaries of Cuban state propaganda) in major U.S. media.
The hypocrisy is stupifying. These books are written for the purpose of making money. You can fifteen different books written on one subject, each one of them written from a slightly different and unique angle, every one of them is written by a Jewish person, every one of them contains just a few minor tidbits of unique information not found elsewhere, and you have the book-buying public scarfing up these tomes thinking that they are privy to some inside information. The entire damn book is usually just a bunch of slick propaganda. If somebody actually wrote a book containing the unvarnished truth and tied it all together in a neat package there would be only one copied printed and it would end up in a time capsule buried deep in the earth at an undisclosed location and the only person who knows where it is buried would be a Jewish person.
