Death Toll Climbs in Iraq Bombings
BAGHDAD - More than 55 people have been killed and nearly 300 injured in a wave of suicide bombings across Iraq. The explosions punctured a period of relative calm in which violence dropped to a four-year low.
Three suicide bombers, believed to have been women, struck in Baghdad as thousands of Shia Muslim pilgrims flooded into the city. The blasts killed at least 32 people and wounded 102, police and hospital staff said.
In the northern city of Kirkuk, a suicide bomber attacked a rally against a law on provincial elections. At least 25 people were killed and 185 injured.
Local police said remains at the scene indicated the bomber was also a woman, although the US military could not confirm this.
The protest had been called to oppose planned provincial elections which the city's Kurdish population fear could affect the control of oil resources. After the blast, angry Kurds opened fire on the offices of a Turkoman political party that opposes Kurdish claims on the oil-rich city.
No group claimed responsibility. Sunni Islamists connected to al-Qaida have previously targeted Shia pilgrims and were suspected of being behind the Baghdad attack.
Female suicide bombers have carried out more than 20 attacks this year. A team of female guards has been deployed around Kadhamiya specifically to search suspects. Groups linked to al-Qaida have increasingly used women as suicide bombers because it is often easier for them to evade security measures.
It is unclear if the Baghdad victims were all pilgrims but the blasts were near the central Karrada district, an area many would have had to pass through on their way to the Kadhamiya shrine in the north-west of the city.
At least a million people are expected to arrive in Baghdad to visit the shrine that honours one of Shia Islam's 12 imams. Numbers will peak tomorrow.
Today's Baghdad blasts were the bloodiest attack in the city since 63 people died in a truck bombing on June 17. In general, Iraq has become more peaceful in recent months with overall violence dropping to the lowest rate since early 2004.
In 2005, the Kadhamiya pilgrimage was marred by one of the biggest death tolls in a single incident since the 2003 US-led invasion. Rumours of a bomb attack triggered a stampede across a bridge to the shrine. Almost 1,000 people were killed.
The bridge has been closed but is expected to reopen soon after this year's pilgrimage. Other bridges and roads leading to Kadhamiya have been closed for the event, and a vehicle curfew has been imposed.
Since the removal of Saddam Hussein, who was a Sunni, rival Shia political parties have encouraged large turnouts at religious festivals to display the majority sect's power in Iraq. Sunni militants have regularly targeted such gatherings.

Yep, the surge is and has been working...and we gotta stay the course .... we've gotta win this...doesn't matter the cost in lives or money or anything else.
Remember what happened when we left Viet Nam, the whole of Southeast Asia became commies and all those 'gooks' followed us home, damn near took over 'merica, remember...and this could be worse they're terrorists, way worse than 'gooks', meaner, trickier and deadlier.
Yeah I'm asking is it time to wake up yet?
Just who has taken over 'merica and how tricky are they? Seems an awful lot of us are fooled or fools. So! What ya gonna do when they come for you?
I'm allowed one dumb question a day; guess I'll use it here.
If, as the article states, approximately 20 suicide bombings have been carried out by females this year, why is it easier for them to evade security measures?
What's the magic number?

This must be propaganda as I distinctly heard John McCain say, not once but several times, that the surge is not working but has Worked, all over, all done, complete success, end of story. Who are we going to believe? A man expecting to be the next president or headline news direct from the internet. So far I haven't believed anything Mr. McCain has had to say as he changes his tune at the next whistle stop or town meeting. John McCain would probably have fared better in the days before instant replay.
Your tax dollars at work. I love to see democracy flourshing in Iraq. America the beautiful!
You are winning the war and the surge worked because less Americans are getting killed. Never mind the holocaust and ethinic cleansing of the Iraqi people.
Shame on your country and it´s leaders.
Nothing is working in Iraq.
Whole areas, sectors, provinces and neighborhoods have been ethnically cleansed.
A secular state has been replaced by an Iranian supported Islamic state.
Millions of Iraqis have either moved within, or immigrated from Irag -including a sizable number of the educated, professional workers.
Baghdad has been transformed into a prison camp.
Nobody can even predict when the next big shoot-out will occur.
Last, civilian services are both almost non-existant and if they exist, they are unpredictable and of very low quality.
We won't mention the huge unemployment figures or the tribalization of civil society.
If I ticked off the above about any country, very few people would declare that it was working.
However, the tragic fact is that we will eventually have to leave; over time, we won't be able to finance this imperial adventure.
I'm suprised that these bombings were reported. It was only Iraqis who died so why should America care. Only 55 died and only 300 were injured. That is a lot less than 1000 dead so the surge must have worked.
But Johnny McCain, what's this? I thought the surge which you so proudly authored had worked and that Baghdad was a bastion of peace and democracy flowering in the freedom parched middle east ready for it's first Disneyland and it's first McDonalds. You mean... a Republican.... LIED?! NO WAY!
Wow! You moon bats know nothing about Islam. Now remember US forces did not kill any one here, moslems killed moslems just as they have been non stop for the past 1,400 years. Why you might ask (doubtful), blame the US for everything. Richard Paine July 28th, 2008 4:59 pm analogy to Viet Nam is beyond ludicrous. North Viet Nam had no intention of crossing the pacific (and was totally incapable of doing so) and attacking the US, Islam on the other hand now has the ability to go anywhere in the world and subjugate the world to the will of allah (sharia law). Sharia law has already preempted some civil law in many European countries and there was an attempt by moslems in a Canadian city to do the same as was an attempt to do the same in Dearborn Michigan.
Now as for WHY moslems are killing moslems,
Volume 9, Book 84, Number 57:
Narrated 'Ikrima:
Some Zanadiqa (atheists) were brought to 'Ali and he burnt them. The news of this event, reached Ibn 'Abbas who said, "If I had been in his place, I would not have burnt them, as Allah's Apostle forbade it, saying, 'Do not punish anybody with Allah's punishment (fire).' I would have killed them according to the statement of Allah's Apostle (Mohammed), 'Whoever changed his Islamic religion, then kill him.'"
Now just like it is always open season on non believers (sura 9:5 in the qur'an), the words of the last prophet and perfect man mohammed abrogate the words of allah in the qur'an, no compulsion in religion ( Al-Baqara, Chapter #2, Verse #256). Now you say BUT sunni and shia are both moslems, yes true to a point to us infidels BUT to a moslem, the sunni are apostates as far as the shia are concerned and the shia are apostates as far as the sunni are concerned so as Volume 9, Book 84, Number 57: states, 'Whoever changed his Islamic religion, then kill him.'" With logic like this there is nothing anyone on earth can do to stop this mass murder.

To answer your "one dumb question a day", females routinely are covered from head to toe so only there eyes are visible (This is to keep lusty islamic men from attacking them), now women are not promised any rewards in heaven only men (the 72 virgins to fuck for all eternity bit) so this is a rather new phenomena, also there are strict laws about non male relatives patting down non female relatives. Thus a female suicide bomber has a virtual free pass to evade security measures
