House Democrats Bash Bush Over Abuse of Executive Power
WASHINGTON - House Democrats - and one Republican - are using today's hearing in the Judiciary Committee to slam President Bush for abusing his executive power.
After laying out a litany of charges against Bush, principally on the "illegal war for oil" in Iraq, Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio), the driving force behind today's hearing, said Congress must act to remove Bush from office.
"The war was totally unnecessary, unprovoked and unjustified," Kucinich said in his opening statement. "The question for Congress is this: What responsibility do the president and his administration have for that unnecessary, unprovoked and unjustified war?"
Kucinich said if lawmakers reviewed the issue, they could only come to the conclusion that it was needed.
"I ask this committee to think, and then to act, in order to enable this Congress to right a very great wrong and to hold accountable those who have misled this Nation," Kucinich said.
"I think this is the most impeachable administration in the history of our country," said Rep. Maurice "Mo" Hinchey (D-N.Y.). Hinchey has introduced legislation to censure Bush administration officials for making statements justifying the invasion of Iraq, as well as the NSA's warrantless wiretapping program. and setting up a detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
"Our constitutional system of checks and balances assumes a certain jostling between the President and Congress, but the Bush Administration's refusal to provide information to Congress or the American people is more dangerous and more sinister than just an extravagantly ambitious claim to executive branch powers," added Rep. Brad Miller (D-N.C.) in his own opening statement. "Control of information stifles dissent and insulates an administration from challenge, either by Congress or its critics. Control of information is incompatible with democracy."
More Miller: "Democracy dies behind closed doors. It is Congress' duty to throw the doors open and keep them open in future administrations, Democratic and Republican alike."
Miller has introduced legislation calling for appointment of a special prosecutor to bring criminal contempt charges against several current and former Bush administration officials for refusing to comply with congressional subpoenas. The Justice Department has refused to bring charges against administration officials for not complying with the subpoenas once Bush has asserted an executive privilege claim. The House Judiciary Committee has filed a civil lawsuit against the White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten and former White House Counsel Harriet Miers for failing to appear before the panel once subpoenaed.
Rep. Walter Jones (R-N.C.), a GOP critic of the president, slammed the president for issuing "signing statements" when approving legislation that lays out what provisions the White House will enforce or agree to abide by.
div#summary{display: none;}"To me, what we're really talking about today is trust: for our Nation to free and strong, the people must trust their president to enforce the law," Jones said. "When the president bypasses the will of the people, expressed through Congress, and decides what provisions of law will and will not be enforced, the president goes beyond the Constitutional authority given to him by our Founding Fathers."

Show AllBravo Dennis Kucinich!!!! I would vote for you in a heartbeat for President, and in fact I have. Thank you for being "a voice in the wilderness."
"Rep. Walter Jones (R-N.C.), a GOP critic of the president, slammed the president for issuing "signing statements" when approving legislation that lays out what provisions the White House will enforce or agree to abide by."
Walter Jones is scared of losing his seat, so after cheerleading for invasion, he is now, upon reflection, against it. Kind of doesn't matter now does it?
Isn't this the guy that renamed french fries "freedom fries" because the president of France was trying to tell Americans that conquering Iraq just might not be a smart move?
I think he is also famous for "supporting the troops", especially the soldiers being investigated for murdering unarmed civilians at close range with a bullet to the head.
with all due respect to kucinich and other members of congress who have oppossed bush inc. from the beginning, this hearing-come-lately is a sad commentary on the levels of disconnect and denial so pervasive with institutions of governance in this country. really, it's just too massive and cumbersome. we need for several dictinct regions to secede - bring down the scale of political engagement to more and more local levels. it's getting increasingly obvious to most of the rest of the world (to some in this country, to be sure) that we are a menace, a disease to be erradicated, if our mother earth is to survive.
Search of the word 'impeachment' in the article and you'll find nothing.
What's happening in congress isn't impeachment, it's a farce, a farce only Democrats can orchestrate.
Kucinich himself is a sham designed to keep the left in the party. If he were serious, he would've left them ages ago. The Democratic Party is rotten to the core and like their clones the Republicans, they have an incurable and inoperable cancer: greed for war cash. They're too busy making deals with AT&T, Blackwater and Haliburton to care about the US Constitution.
Bypassing democratic procedures are essential for any corpocracy. Corporatism, not terrorism, is the greatest threat to our nation. The Bush presidency has been raping the taxpayers since 'day one' while a handful of multinationals boast record profits. Feeling depressed about high unemployment, lousy wages and inflation? Then just look to Wall Street for a little encouragement as Big Oil, Big pharmaceutical, defence contractors and other GOP favourites tell us that overall "...things aren't that bad"! The failure of Congress to prevent this, is proof of their complicity.
How to recognize a corporate stooge. The stooge will NEVER discuss...
Raising corporate taxes
Reducing the size of the military budget
nationalizing ANYTHING
universal healthcare... without the insurance companies!
the right to 'live in a gun free society' (rather than the right to bear arms)
raising minimum wage
eliminating the rush for 'globalization'
the dangers of global warming
eliminating fossil fuel dependency
cancelling foreign debt
immediate and complete withdrawal of all military forces from Iraq and Afghanistan
closing 'forward operating bases' abroad
dismantling our nuclear arsenal
giving Israelis, Palestinians and Iranians equal time in debating their positions to the American public
reinforcing the social safety net (for the poor and middle class that is!)
getting tough on corporate crime
legalizing marijuana
changing our 'consumer driven' mindset
de-corporatizing the mainstream media
signing on to Kyoto, the world criminal court or any other body that restricts corporate greed
Kucinich and his small band of morally sound politicians have little or no hope against corporate America and their 'contracted government' unless we the people stop voting for corporate selected candidates. Vote Nader, vote Green or even vote for the Communists this November, but don't vote corporate!

I thought it noteworthy that Vincent Bugliosi, who has written three No. 1 best sellers and won three Edgar Allan Poe awards, the top honor for crime writers and more than 30 years ago co-wrote the best seller "Helter Skelter," about the Manson case wasn't even mentioned although he did testify.
As a Los Angeles county prosecutor, Vincent Bugliosi batted a thousand in murder cases: 21 trials, 21 convictions, including the Charles Manson case in 1971.
Bugliosi's most recent book is The Betrayal of America: How the Supreme Court Undermined the Constitution and Chose Our President. In it it exposes the Bush administration for the criminals that they are. He could easily win a murder case against Bush.
I will be shocked if Bush's protectors in the Democratic Party, like their leader, Nancy Pelosi actually allow this to happen without first fighting it tooth and nail.
Correction, Vincent Bugliosi's most recent book is: The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder ISBN 978-159315-481-3(2008) This book fully exposes Bush as a liar and a war criminal and lays the groundwork for successfully prosecuting him.

@tailcap
I believe a motion of censure is required before impeachment proceedings can begin. Without censure, there can be no impeachment.
Now arrest and incarceration requires non of this formal goobledygook.
Well, I guess we're all screwed. Nothing left to do but pack up and move to Patagonia. Bush has probably signed over all the mineral, water and energy rights to the Saudis and Chinese. Oh, unless all you lovely people have some CONSTRUCTIVE ideas on what's to be done?
If Bush were to face any serious consequence he can always count on either President Obama or McCain to pardon him and his cronies. In the unlikely event he weren't pardoned he can count on the other wing of the Republican administration, the Supreme Court, to step in and save him. And if that doesn't work, he can simply hole himself up in his Crawford ranch, surround himself with Secret Service and Blackwater mercenaries and say, "Come and get me!"
The Democrats would then call the whole thing off in order to spare the American people the agony of the ordeal and return to the important task of caring for the "peoples" business.

-Thank you for that clarification, I wasn't aware of that.
RichM, so, like "Good mugger" - "Bad mugger?" :D Yep we're getting mugged all the time in Washington. The MIMIC (Media Industrial Military Infotainment Complex) grabs dough out of our national treasury 'pocket' on a regular basis, as they threaten and whine about 'cuts to the DOD' budget - really possible reductions in increases that never happen.
"The question for Congress is this: What responsibility do the president and his administration have for that unnecessary, unprovoked and unjustified war?" - Kucinch
About the same amount of responsibility that Congress has for its own abuse of power in passing 90+ percent of the legislation in this country by "unanimous consent". The responsibility would equal "zero" since none of those bills go to the floor for discussion/debate to be seen by the citizens of this country; and not one leglislator has to cast a vote in favor or against, which would ultimately go on their voting record and seen by their constituents.
Thank you, Dennis Kucinich, for being one of a hand-full of representatives who actually works for the interests of the citizens of this soon-to-be third world country!
Unless you could impeach both Cheney and Bush simultaneously you would end up with the same gang running the country.
Being a good little social democrat, I say this country needs to move to a parliamentary system. We've now seen enough of the flaws in the system to know that it is no true democracy and pales in comparison to parliamentary examples(which are not perfect either. Denmark violated i.e. violated it's own constitution sending troops to Iraq) in other countries.
The whole concept of a president is a flawed one imho.

the democrats are scum--slightly higher on the food chain than the repugnants, but still scum. Kuchinich is not scum--this man actually stands up for the Constitution AND the citizens of this country.
My only question is this: why isn't Ron Paul, the Constitutionalist, standing side by side with Dennis and demanding impeachment. Answer: Ron Paul is another phony, a shill for corporate profits.
Nothing wrong with having a president as long as he/she are kept in check.
The utter avariciousness and cowardice shown by the Congress are all that is necessary for the lice at the head of our government to prosper.
NPR and C-SPAN radio (at the least)and other so-called "news networks" (infotainment distraction)should have interrupted their regular programs to air this live. It is man bites dog, isn't it? Democrats with backbone publicly calling for impeachment hearings? I just loved watching those Republicans on the committee squirm. They know in their hearts that Bush and his cronies are impeachable six ways from Sunday. Every time I see that little weasel Steve King I cringe because my family comes from the part of Iowa (Storm Lake)that he represents in Congress. Now my Congressman is the equally creepy Lamar Smith. Go Kucinich and Bob Wexler!!!
AIPAC calls the tune, and the US Congress dances.

It looks like Bugliosi had the smoking gun!
I don't think most of our elected officials in Washington realize how much their pro war actions and anti Constitutional actions have angered the general populace.
We need more citizen representation everywhere instead of the same old career politicians.
Has anyone compiled a voting record of all the elected officials that we worked so hard get in office a year ago?
If so, I would like to see it.
And a big heartfelt "thank you" to Mr. Kuchinich and Ms. Jackson Lee all the others who have the courage to seek out and speak the truth.
All We the People need is for the Constitution and Bill of Rights to be returned, intact and functioning, to the Halls of Government.
I have sent the above request to my alleged representatives many times. So have others. So far, not one answer or acknowledgment. When it comes to Constitutional questions, they are mute.
That should certainly be telling us something.
IN DEFENSE OF REP. WALTER JONES:
Yes, he did introduce Freedom Fries, but later, when he realized what the Bush administration has done, their crimes, and perhaps understood the French resistance to another useless, costly and murderous war...changed his mind and co-authored, with Dennis Kucinich, a resolution calling for the president to set a timeline for withdrawal of troops from Iraq. FOR THIS WE SHOULD APPLAUD WALTER JONES...A MAN WHO CAN CHANGE HIS MIND, FUNCTIONALLY APOLOGIZE THROUGH HIS ACTIONS...SOMETHING MANY, MANY REPUBLICANS AND DEMOCRATS, IF THEY HAD MORALS AND ETHICS, WOULD BE DOING.
His appearance at this hearing, even though his comments were about Signing Statements and their unconstitutionality, and that he is supporting legislation to control them, WAS MAGNIFICENT! His inner fortitude and honesty may, perhaps, counterbalance the insanity of Joe Lieberman and others like Nancy Pelosi who both do not understand their oaths of office, but VIOLATE THEM IN A TRAITOROUS FASHION.
WALTER JONES IS A PATRIOT...IN THE TRUEST SENSE OF THE WORD.
Obey the founding principles of America as outlined in the Constitution, members of Congress, and impeach this joke of a president and his handlers immediately. Anything less from you is unacceptable. Is Congressman Kucinich the ONLY one of you to stand and deliver? As far as I am concerned, no vote to impeach will mean no vote to elect - each and every one of you.
AlwaysAskWHY July 25th, 2008 4:32 pm: "His appearance at this hearing, even though his comments were about Signing Statements and their unconstitutionality, and that he is supporting legislation to control them, WAS MAGNIFICENT!"
So the solution to the president eviscerating existing legislation, and the constitution, is to….pass more legislation? I know, they can pass "super-bills" that require two, count'em two signing statements, before the president can ignore them. Let me know how that works out. Shall we call the haberdasher now, so that we can start fitting out Obama now with his crown?
Here's the question:
What do you suppose was the trade off? What did Democrats get that was worth their playing dead once they were the Majority? I remember a vigorous Democratic party.
Impeach BushCo Conspiracy Incorporated.
We'll be glad to raise money for the chartering of a public rendition flight to send them to the Hague.
The bastards have gambled with your future and your childrens future... and have very nearly started WWIII.
We are seven years,
two overtly invaded countries,
one missile defense system with radar's/intercepters stationed in Alaska, possibly Afghanistan and Iraq, soon to include Czech and Poland,
countless no bid contracts,
one stop loss draft,
4,439 coalition deaths,
multitudes of frightening new war technologies,
multiple WMD anthrax weapons found not in Iraq… but in congress member's mail,
one outted WMD specialist CIA agent,
one dead russian spy,
one 2008 ICBM Red Square Military Missile Parade,
multiple ongoing standoffs with long range TU-95 bombers,
one lost and wandering B-52 carrying 6 nuclear weapons (probably due to spilt coffee deployment memo mixup),
diminishing numbers of allies,
and at least one more pro war presidential term,
heck let's call it two,
closer to WWIII.
Cold War Part II. Brought to you by BushCo Conspirators Incorporated since 2000.
WWIII coming soon... brought to you by a bunch of capitalist fuckups and liars.
It is not bashing Bu$h the inferior to point out a tiny fraction of the crimes and a few of the impeachable offenses he has done. Nor is it bashing when the numerous incompetent and corrupt administration officials Bu$h the inferior has appointed are exposed for the scum they are.
Bashing is when you point out that he talks like an uneducated mental patient with shit in his mouth or when you point out that his beady eyes and facial expression reminds you that chimpanzees look more intelligent and attractive.
Good point -AlwaysAskWHY-, but I would like to add that even if Rep. Jones has changed his position "merely" because he fears losing his seat because of the resentment of Bush and the "war" in his constituency -this would still be a very good thing!
This is the Electoral system actually working as intended.
Congresspersons are SUPPOSED to follow the mood and will of those whom they represent, that's why the seats are open for election so often -they're SUPPOSED to be afraid of pissing us off!
When the man who gave us "Freedom Fries" goes to a Committee hearing run by "the other side" and says -and therefore enters into the Congressional Record and History-
"When the president bypasses the will of the people, expressed through Congress, and decides what provisions of law will and will not be enforced, the president goes beyond the Constitutional authority given to him by our Founding Fathers."
-it is time to laugh with Shocked Happiness not mumble with Grumpy Cynicism.
I myself quite thoroughly Guffaw-ed, and very much enjoyed it.
Have Fun,
-matti.
If your loved ones were brutally murdered, and the murder caught. Would you be satisfied with a trial lacking the authority to convict the murderer?
Kucinich should spend significant time directly attacking the committee itself, as well as Conyers, for being frauds.
In the end, we might as well call this propaganda. Because while the committee looks like it is accomplishing something, it is actually achieving nothing at all. If you don't know why Bush should be impeached, then you haven't been paying attention. It's not like this will get broad coverage. C-SPAN isn't exactly America Idol.
Exactly, zzz!
That's why I cringe at this bogus "Truth Commission" canard that's been trotted out recently. It's a political placebo.
WTF and Tailcap:
Impeachment does NOT require a resolution of censure first. See:
http://www.abanet.org/publiced/impeach2.html
All it takes is a quick Google search and you'll get plenty of info on the subject. People like you, who are too lazy to research the facts, are the ones who continue to obfuscate and confuse others.
lobo72 July 25th, 2008 6:25 pm People like you, who are too lazy to research the facts, are the ones who continue to obfuscate and confuse others.
-get screwed!
My point had nothing to do with whether a censure is needed first.
This what I posted: "I think this is the most impeachable administration in the history of our country," said Rep. Maurice "Mo" Hinchey (D-N.Y.). Hinchey has introduced legislation to censure Bush administration
-notice the use of the word censure which falls far short of impeachment
How is that attempting to obfuscate and confuse others you idiot?
Then WTF posted: WTF July 25th, 2008 2:41 pm
I believe a motion of censure is required before impeachment proceedings can begin.
-So what if it is or isn't needed? The point is I made is that the sold out, cowardly and compromised Democrats have waited until the very last minute for this political stunt which result in nothing but a bunch of hot air and a timid censure at best.
Most of the above comments are "preaching to the choir" and accomplish little.
We are most of us children looking for someone to save us when it is only we who will save the day. Kucinich has said that he only brought the articles of impeachment to the House because enough people had contacted him urging him to do so.
The only way that anything will happen from here on is if enough of us insist on it. That means pick you battle and go for it. Personally, I've joined a group of people persistently, i.e. week after week in person, lobbying our Congressperson to either sign on to Kucinich's bill or bring his own articles.
None of us can do this alone. It will take all of us acting together to make it happen. There is no easy way. Each one must decide if our Constitutional Republic, unique in history, is worth the effort.
This is a dictatorship, the administration makes the rules and does as it pleases.
Between Nov elections and February we will see the true motives of the Bush/Cheney crime family.
If you think they will leave office and possibly face war crimes charges, think again. Laws are in place to cancel the elections.
Got heat? got food? good luck.
Well at least our MSM is covering this to some degree, that's something productive.
.
Congressman Dennis Kucinich is a brave hero. He not only will not let Bush and Cheney continue destroying this nation, and violating the Constitution; but he has focused the spotlight on his fellow Democratics. The Democratic Leadership has publicly stated, for the last 3 years, that the IMPEACHMENT of President George W. Bush and Vice President Richard Cheney are "Off Limits, OFF the Agenda".
Kucinich put the accountability question squarly on Speaker Pelosi, and the rest of the Democratic Leadership.
IMPEACH both Bush and Cheney.........IMMEDIATELY !!!!!!!!!
.
Beware, the people posting here who preach "we cannot do anything" are TROLLS! Ignore them.
Thank you Kucinich, Wexler and all others who helped to bring these hearings about.
I don't believe in the foretelling of the future, but interestingly, Nostradamus is thought to have predicted that Bush would be impeached.
Impeachment is too good for Bush though. Hope it doesn't end there and that all the neocons pay for their high crimes if only to set an example for future administrations.
Call congress. Any of them. Tell them they MUST stand up and begin to hold this administration responsible. The House Judiciary MAY have begun a long awaited process today but the Senate MUST also become a leading committee because the climate situation is urgent. Let's get them to use both and ALL barrells.
They need to hear from you. Call. Call. Call as many of them as you can.
It may do nothing but it is the only weapon we seem to have since people won't gather in the streets.
If you recollect Dennis stood before Congress not too long ago and Read "35 Articles of IMPEACHMENT" Clearly spoken out and Spelled out! There is more from this Administration to warrant IMPEACHMENT than there ever was in Clintons 8 years and Impeachment hearings.
Upholding the Constitution
We are a nation of laws and the Constitution is our foundation. The Constitution must be upheld and protected in good times and in bad.
That is our enduring strength. No man and no administration is above the law.
The rights of any person detained by any arm or agent of the United States government anywhere in the World shall be upheld. Mistreatment of detainees demeans us all and shall not be tolerated.
We shall become a beacon for human right.
Article I, section 8, clause 11 of the US Constitution says that Congress has the enumerated power of "declaring war" and clause 12 says that Congress has the enumerated power to "raise and support armies."
The President shall not authorize force against another nation with out the consent of Congress. In all instances armed intervention shall be the the very last resort after
all diplomatic efforts have been exhausted.
Our determination to abide by our Constitution and to defend human rights is our greatest strength and far greater than our military strength.
IMPEACH the BUMS!!!
Impeach Bush and Kooky-niche.
Where is Kooky-niche on Ice Age, World Oil Production Decline, Polar melt off, nuclear weaponry controlled by fascist pigs...
I doubt very much he is aware of the simple solutions which are being so stridently suppressed by the government he represents.
Where is he on congressional corruption, media corruption, banking influence, financial dominance, direct democracy?
Impeach them all, the whole federal government for treason.
Kooky-niche is playing the part of the pseudo-leftist.
Where is Kooky-niche on the use of white phosphorous on Iraqi civilians, or really where WAS he? White Phosphorous, used during the assault on Fallujah, melted flesh to bone of many Iraqi civilians when it was intently sprayed across 3 football fields worth of residential neighborhoods. This was after US troops refused to let 16 year old boys evacuate the city, then layed waste to every person there. Where was Kooky-niche on that?
The only way things are going to get done in this country is for we the people to do it.
Too many of us kept quiet for too long and that's how this mess got as far as it did. We have to keep active in keeping our eyes ears and mouths open when it comes to what's going on in D.C.
One suggestion is either getting rid of lobbying, or banning giving of gifts or money to our elected officials from them, even for elections.
I also would like to see more Cindy Sheehans voted into the legislative branch. Politicians don't belong in our government.
The Democrats have been steadfast against holding Bush officials accountable since they got the majority in Congress. And they've been steadfast against impeachment. If you want to know where the Obama administration would take this, the read this ....
According to After Downing Street, Barack Obama's advisor, Cass Sunstein, speaking at the netroots convention cautioned against prosecuting criminal conduct by the Bush regime. Prosecuting government officials risks a cycle of criminalizing public service, he argued, and Democrats should avoid replicating retributive efforts like the impeachment of President Clinton--or even the "slight appearance" of it. --http://prorev.com/2008/07/obama-advisor-warns-against-holding.html
I guess from scanning the comments, my question would be 'why are people taking this little dog and pony show by the Democrats seriously?'
First, they clearly ran out the clock by stonewalling any discussion of impeachment for a year. That was the time it could have been effective. Now it would be a joke. What, they want to run Bush out of office on Jan 19, 2009?
Finally, they gave good-little-Democrat Kucinich the green light to go ahead only after it was too late. So he stands up and files impeachment resolutions. Which the Dem leadership promptly buried back into the same committee where they'd been keeping impeachment bottled up for the last year.
When they get enough heat about holding hearings that they feel like they need to do something, they hold this farce which is expressly stated as not leading towards impeachment. Instead it just appears to be an attempt to get some cheap headlines against the Republicans.
And, in the article I just posted above, you can see the highly predictable response of the Democrats in that they will continue to protect the Republicans even after they win the White House and the Justice Dept next year.
Just how many times does this have to happen before people start to get the idea that the Democrats are protecting the Republicans, not opposing and prosecuting them.
If you want something different, vote Green.

WE MUST IMPEACH BUSH ON CRIMINAL CHARGES AND UNLAWFULL WAR AND CRIMES COMMITTED AGAINST HUMANITY. IF THEY DON'T IMPEACH BUSH THEN THE USA CAN BE CONSIDERD A DICTATORSHIP EQUAL TO NAZI HITLER, FOR THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE HAS BEEN MUTED.[THE BAD FORM OF COMMUNISM], Where "We the People have No Voice"
Control of information is incompatible with democracy."
. . . checks and balances. . . BS -- the system is perverted.
Congress's check on the president is refusal to fund. The president's check on congress is the veto. Neither is used enough so stop the fingerpointing and do your job.
Dennis Kucinich and Ron Paul should meet and flip a coin to see who should be president and vice-president then run as independent candidates. I'd write them in on my ballot.
Sections of the country don't have to secede. We have states. A state legislative branch should pass a law that the Ten Admendment gives the states power over the federal government in all areas of law, except that clearly written into the US Constitution.
Then also pass a law collecting all federal taxes and holding them in "escrow" until such issues are resolved.
Of the state and federal elected officials work as a tag team against the tax payer and citizen, but they do work for the corporate kleptocracy.
Have a nice day.
