Cindy Sheehan Is Putting Impeachment on the Table
Does anyone seriously doubt that one of the reasons why a House Judiciary Committee hearing will at least discuss the "I" word on Friday is Cindy Sheehan's independent challenge House Speaker Nancy Pelosi?
Pelosi, famously, took impeachment "off the table" just before the 2006 election.
Then, this month, she edged it back on the menu -- suggesting that the Judiciary Committee might take up the matter of Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich's proposal to impeach the president for using deception to draw the nation into an illegal and immoral war.
Judiciary Committee chair John Conyers, the Michigan Democrat who has never made any secret of his desire to address the imperial reach of the Bush-Cheney presidency -- especially on matters of war and peace -- jumped at the chance to schedule the hearing. A two-hour session, at which the "i" word will be discussed openly by advocates such as Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich, is scheduled for Friday.
Though the hearing is unlikely to evolve into the full-fledged inquiry that many of us believe necessary, it is remarkable that in the summer of a presidential election year the key committee in a chamber where impeachment was supposed to be off the table will turn its attention to the tool that the founders afforded the legislative branch for constraining the executive.
Why is this happening now?
It is worth noting that this is petition-gathering season for independent candidates running in California. Sheehan, the mother of a slain Iraq War soldier who turned her grief into activism, and her supporters are busy collecting the 10,198 signatures that will be needed to get her name on the ballot.
Sheehan -- echoing the sentiments of the millions of Americans who believe that it if it is wrong for a Republican administration to abuse the Constitution then it is just as wrong for Democratic leaders to refuse to defend the document's principles -- has made presidential accountability a central issue of her independent campaign in a city that has already overwhelmingly endorsed an impeachment initiative.
Indeed, Sheehan announced that she would challenge the speaker after it became clear -- after President Bush commuted White House aide Scooter Libby's prison sentence last summer -- that Pelosi was blocking consideration of impeachment by the House.
Local media has focused on Sheehan's advocacy for impeachment, noting this spring when she filed initial paperwork for her candidacy that the woman who has been referred to as "the Rose Parks of the anti-war movement" had decided to run because "seeing George Bush impeached would be a victory for humanity."
Sheehan is a realist. She admits that her candidacy is "an uphill battle."
But she has drawn significant television, radio and newspaper coverage in San Francisco, as well as endorsements from the local Green and Peace and Freedom parties and local officials such as the president of the city's school board and plan commission. She has raised more than $100,000 for the campaign, attracted an energetic team of volunteers. And, now, as those volunteers hit the streets to collect the signatures to put Sheehan's name on the ballot, Pelosi is suddenly showing some flexibility -- the key word being "some" -- with regard to the impeachment discussion.
No matter how many votes she gets in November, give Cindy Sheehan credit for opening up the debate -- not just in San Francisco but in Washington.
John Nichols, a pioneering political blogger, has written The Beat since 1999. His posts have been circulated internationally, quoted in numerous books and mentioned in debates on the floor of Congress.

Show AllThe only thing that will spur the incumbent Democrats into action is fear of losing their jobs. The more fear, the more action.
It's time to sweep out the House. Don't re-elect yet again.
Go Cindy!
It's not easy being Green. But I think it's the only way out of this Corporate Hell.
She still needs the signatures to get on the ballot, so Californians, get out and sign up. You have to get on base before you can score.
Hey it was good for Kermit to be green so it is good for America!
I admire her fight and am hoping she gets the signatures she needs to get Nancy out of office.
I just hope when she does get to Washington that she isn't corrupted by corporate lobbyists/money that will try to buy her vote. The evil that is Washington seems to corrupt even the most good intended politicians. Money and greed corrupts all humans and we are all vulnerable to it. It takes a strong person not to accept money and bribes as money does rule the world. An FDR she must be to the chargrin of the current rich that want the money and the 'trickle up' economics to go on another 40 years.
Again, My support to Cindy. We need her in Congress. We lost Wellstone, Cindy is the next best thing!! GO! FIGHT! WIN!!
Don't be fooled. Pelosi hasn't moved at all from her position that impeachment is off the table. She knows that any investigation of whether or not Bush lied would take months by which time he will be out of office. The fact is an impeachment vote could be held tomorrow based on Bush's public admission that he had violated the Fisa law and the 4th amendment to the constitution.
Lobo Gris
From sources I know, Pelosi is getting a little nervous about Cindy's momentum. Cindy needs about 2800 more signatures to get on the ballot (by now it might be even fewer than that number). Nichols's statistic about Cindy's raising $100k for her campaing is inaccurate. She has raised more than $250k but still needs more money. So, if you can afford to donate money, please do. Cindy has a real shot at booting Nancy Pelosi and her botox-filled face out of office! Go Cindy!!!
Cindy,
Next month I will send you a check for $300. I think that will put me over the $1,000 mark, but the limit is $2,300 and I aim to diligently work toward that number. I hope that other posters here on CD who can afford it will join me in that effort.
The good news here is that Sheehan's chances of taking this seat are not entirely outside the realm of possibility. The fact that Pelosi has budged at all indicates that those chances are within the sphere of probability.
I have friends in 'Frisco and a long distance card. I'm going to use it up calling them repeatedly until they swear that they have signed the petition.
Cindy for Congress.
jj
Holding Pelosi accountable for her complicity in undermining the Constitution and the Rule of Law is what is at stake here. And the only way for Congress to get the message that the status quo is not acceptable, is to unseat them. No matter which party.
Our democracy is broken. "We the People" no longer have a voice. Defeating Pelosi is our last chance to send a message to the powers that be that we're mad as hell and we aren't going to take it anymore. From either party.
PLEASE support Cindy's run for the House. Send money! If you know anyone in her district, contact them and get them to become actively involved.
Thanks for all you do. Go Cindy!!
P.S. I can't remember the web site to donate to Cindy's campaign. We need a link!!
Thanks
Rebel Farmer,

Go Cindy.
She is on her way to the hearing in Washington.
Claudius, we were writing at the same time and you beat me to it!
I wish I lived there so I could vote for Cindy Sheehan!!
Good luck, Cindy!! Thanks for running!!!!!!
Pelosi is certainly rattled but sees her job as not challenging Bush but "sweeping up his messes". Ewwwww!:
"Pelosi shot back in unusually personal terms.
"You know, God bless him, bless his heart, president of the United States, a total failure, losing all credibility with the American people on the economy, on the war, on energy, you name the subject," Pelosi replied. She then tsk-tsked Bush for "challenging Congress when we are trying to sweep up after his mess over and over and over again." "

Good luck Cindy!
Even though the system in Washington is beyond repair and we will face a series of rapid collapses in the U.S., the defeat of the corrupt Pelosi and election of Cindy will be good for the heart.
Pelosi is running scared now. I think she is beginning to feel the heat in her own district. We will see more special interest money flowing her way. Sheehan vs. Pelosi - this will be the one race that can break the ice open for a movement towards a true democracy in America. The fake, money and career driven are scared - they will do whatever to keep Pelosi and people like her in power. What will we the people do? I think we will surprise them.
Change comes from the bottom up.
Please move to impeach President Bush-it will show the American public how truly out of touch the dem controlled Congress is. Pelosi's House has reneged or failed to accomplish every one of their pre-election promises except to raise the minimum wage-gee didja see this Fannie Mae bailout? Billions in earmaks. You thought the Republicans were big spenders? HA-we're pikers compared to liberals. If it wasn't so serious, I'd almost want Obama to get elected, he'll keep the dems out of power for 20 years after he fucks things up.
Flame away creeps
Real patriots defend the Constitution!
Thank you Cindy.
MM29,
The GOP has done nothing great for you other than selling your ass out to China. Happy now?
Of course, I'm all for 3rd party.
I have never understood why a liberal place like San Francisco would tolerate Pelosi's stance on impeachment. She does not represent her people!
Go Cindy!
Earthian,
No worries. The link you posted is easier to click on than mine. I am happy that you too support Cindy!
Lobo Gris-I agree-this hearing seems to be for show only-but may be an indication the dems/pelosi are getting nervous about their own fates.
See article on left sidebar re hearing about the imperial presidency.
Donate to Cindy!!!
I fully support Cindy in her bid to un-seat that witch Pelosi... Please, DO give money to her campaign... But remember folks, in order to contribute to Cindy's campaign you MUST be a US citizen. If Cindy is found to be accepting contributions from a foreign national, even if she didn't know it, she'll be in deep shit, so don't do it.
On the flip side though, it's funny how AIPAC and other 'lobby groups' that represent foreign entities are welcome to 'donate' (read bribe) to candidates... I guess the lobby group is considered a US citizen. heh.
Earthian: Thanks for putting up the URL.
CD Folks -- I just made a contribution from the great progressive state of Texas. It's 4:32 PM CDT. I challenge everybody to match w/ whatever you can, especially Texas folks. The website is easy to use.
SF Folks: Get out there and get those petition signatures. This is the big leagues now and the Pelosi Politburo will use every dirty trick there is to negate signatures, so you really have to get a bunch. There are 8746 now, according to the website. Let's see thousands more. Tens of thousands, Hundreds of thousands.
Here's my challenge to you: when you get over 10,000, I'll send more money. And every 2,000 after that. I hope other people will pick up the challenge as well.
Let's show Cindy that she will be a US Representative -- even for Texas!
Time to send Pelosi back to her mansion in SF followed by disposing of her corproate jet payed for by the little people Pelosi steps on every day. And lets not stop here, boycott the Nation Magazine who is trying to kill Cindy's run and perpetuate the status quo. Send the elitist bastards like Katrina a message that they don't speak for the grass roots, and get their noses out of the rear ends of elites they work for.
It's now up to the people in Pelosi's district to dump her; the rest of us can't do it. Support Cindy Sheehan!
By the way, has Cindy ever considered teaming up with Vincent Bugliosi and charging Bush with the murder of her son Casey? Might be a good opportunity here for a high-profile case that would definitely get media attention--A perfect storm.
Cindy defeating polosi would be a historic coup. Quite possibly the most important race this year.
tj July 24th, 2008 5:38 pm
Ha! Beat you to it. $50 first of each month from the Great State of Texas!
Send Pelosi to the showers and Cindy to Washington.
Now, that's what I'm talking about! Doesn't it make more sense to pluck Nancy Pelosi from her lofty position as Speaker of the House and replace her with Cindy Sheehan or even a Republican to send a message to all of them? What a statement that would make!
While we can't afford a Bush III, we can afford to give up a Dem seat in the House if we are not successful at getting Cindy elected, as we already have a significant majority there that is likely to increase after the elections.
Cindy needs your help!
http://www.cindyforcongress.org/
Cindy needs well over 10,000 signatures by August 8th to get on the ballot, and she is currently several thousand short of that number.
MikeBinSC says,
"...and replace her with Cindy Sheehan or even a Republican..."
I assume with the "Republican" you are being facetious. If you are serious, hell no!!
Dear Friends
I am in DC right now and will attend the "hearings" tomorrow.
Thank you for all the support, love, cash and encouragement!
People at the office in SF, are still counting the signatures that are pouring in today, but I think we will go under 1000 left today. We will turn in our initial 10,198 on Tuesday and start getting supplemental signatures for the invalidation rate!
We are way ahead of our campaign's schedule and way ahead of the August 8th deadline and we will be the 6th independent campaign in California to attain ballot access!
Indeed, Pelosi is getting nervous, but the pressure will only increase.
Thanks John for the nice article!
xo
Cindy
Claudius,
Does Pelosi have a Republican challenger in the election along with Cindy? If she does, votes for Cindy could split the vote and cause the Republican to win. But, since we already have a significant majority in the House, that is likely to increase after the elections, we could afford to lose that one seat to make a statement.
PS
Yes, Vince Bugliosi and I are working on it...
xoxo
Cindy
You're quite welcome, Cindy.
I'm from just outside Philadelphia (PA), a long way from the action, but I'm happy to do my bit.
I've been worrying about the signature drive, so I'm pleased to hear that it's going well. I'm sure you're aware that there are some who sincerely support you, but as a "symbolic" candidate who could never actually WIN, or could actually FUNCTION as a REAL congressman.
It amazes me that politically aware progressives so readily buy into the pathological status quo of rule by a modern para-corporate professionalized political elite. These "inside politics" self-styled "realists" reject out of hand the notion of a citizen-politician, an AMATEUR in the best, original sense of the term ("lover").
Anyway, I say: f**k THAT s**t! I refuse to consign you to the role of a performer participating some kind of consciousness-raising stunt. You damn well SHOULD win, and I have no doubt that you could do the job as well or better than most of the charlatans presently warming up Congressional chairs.
You are my kind of hell-raiser.
Say "hey" to Jonah for me. ♥ 8) ♥
Cindy Sheehan,
Can you PLEASE run for president in 2012 because I am quite frankly fed up with the duopoly in Washington? And while at it, can you pass the word around that it's high time to overturn the ban on Cannabis, the harmless and peaceful plant that can be put to 26000 industrial uses and especially get America off wars for oil?
P.S.: I live in South Carolina. Am I allowed to contribute to your campaign because you're in SF, CA. Let me know. Thanks.
I want Little Bro to be right. I want Cindy to win, even if I can't vote for her (wrong state). But I fear the Pelosi political zillionaire machine will simply outspend her and these f**king elections are never really about anything but who has the most money. Why shouldn't they be, when the major corporations own the country, the political process, the media that promote it, and most of our lives. Cindy deserves all the support we can give; trouble is, there aren't enough of us. Money and corruption have turned the electoral process into a gambling casino run by a mega-mafia.
Now this is exactly when and where to vote for 3rd party candidates and independents. Not in the presidential race.
My sentiments exactly opeluboy, and yes FrederickJohnson July 24th, 2008 9:10 pm, you CAN contribute to Cindy's campaign.
Cindy, I recently read Vincent Bugliosi's "The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder". Do you know if any DA has stepped forward to press charges yet?
Just imagine, Bush in the courtroom on trial for his life, Cindy Sheehan, the mother he wouldn't speak with, and Vincent Bugliosi, sitting at the table running the prosecution. I love it, it puts "Imprisonment on the Table"!
'Sheehan is a realist. She admits that her candidacy is "an uphill battle."'
Realist? No, John Nichols. Realists lay down for the steamroller. Idealists knock the axles loose. Cindy Sheehan is an idealist and she is making that steamroller wobble. And so we're not talking about pie in the sky here as your "realist" assertion begs us to do.
Thanks MikeBinSC, and I have contributed to Cindy's campaign. Everyone here should as well, especially all the blowhards who are constantly screaming about 3rd parties. Pony up, or shut up. Here's your chance to actually do something. Few deserve replacement more than Pelosi.
Thanks, Cindy!
Your election, and Pelosi's defeat, would be the SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT statement that the American people could make in defense of our Constitution.
It would show, through the people of San Francisco, that we get it. That this is a Constitutional crisis, and standing up for the Constitution is more important than who is elected President.
That no one, especially not the (worst ever) Speaker of the House, can take the Constitution off the table.
That the President is not above the law, that "Commander in Chief" does NOT give authority to violate the law, and that impeachement was the mechanism the Founders included to prevent what they feared most, the abuse of Executive power.
Cindy is a realist and an idealist. She is standing up on principle, while knowing that the media have been almost as collusive as Pelosi in refusing to recognize impeachment. There is great public support for impeachment, yet there is almost no polling done on the subject (only the "American Research Group" is ever sighted).
We shall see tomorrow what the limited inquiry on one article will do, but what is vital on any REAL impeachment investigation would be the power to issue subpoenas that could NOT be ignored. Will Conyers do so?
Regardless of what happens, the loudest, clearest message we could send would be to support Cindy's campaign and send the arrogant collaborator packing.
Go Cindy!!!!!!!!!
I see from Cindy's comment and his site, that Vince Bugliosi is going to testify at the hearing. He said he wasn't for impeachment in his excellent book, The Prosecution of George Bush for Murder.
He seems to have changed his mind.
That would be great if SanFran voters would give Pelosi the bitchslap she deserves and kick her sorry ass to the curb.
Unfortunately, Cindy Sheehan has about as much chance of winning as Bu$h does of being impeached. Kudos to her for taking on Nancy "Off The Table" and standing on principle.
I wonder if Pelosi lost a son in Iraq if she would feel any differently about W and his criminal cronies?
Pelosi is supporting an unethical position on the impeachment issue, and she isn't getting into any more trouble than the president. Isn't there something wrong with that picture?
Vote third party, a 5% vote would be a great thing to show the protectors of the status quo.
This is exactly what we need and where we can get a 'third party' into Washington. Not by "voting for Nader" which will ensure that John McCain gets to invade Iran, but by first targeting those Democrats and Republicans who are NOT LISTENING.
I sent Cindy $100.00 and I'm going to send her another $100.00 if she gets on the ballot.
As the Vermont Progressive party has shown, even a small number of third party candidates in a legislature can make a big change in the way it operates. We only need 15 in the House and the whole body will begin to transform. THAT's where we can truly accomplish change.
Run Cindy run!
I hadn't read the article, but came across one titled such that Nancy Pelosi has altered course, at least in terms of appearance with respect to whether or not this hearing on Friday will amount to anything really significant, beneficial.
BUT, even if they did impeach Bush, we still have Kucinich's first bill for impeachment and of Cheney. Like Kucinich correctly reasoned, Cheney's the most dangerous of the two and needs to be impeached either at the same time as Bush, or else first; for not doing this would mean that Cheney would then become president. Bush mostly is puppet, while Cheney's ... not. Every time Bush started making some acceptable sense in terms of the war on Iraq, f.e., Cheney immediately made up for this surprising change in or with Bush by basically clobbering it, overriding, and then puppet Bush fell back to doing as told. And that's only one sample of examples of Cheney being the real ruler in the Bush-Cheney administration.
Of course impeachment of Bush wouldn't happen before their term is up anyway, but if it did and Cheney wasn't impeached first or at the same time, then DANGER, DANGER, ...!
It's not Bush who sees to the Pentagon racketeering that's going on under this presidential administration, Cheney [is]. Bush couldn't even run his oil company; needed to be bailed out or rescued by the Bush family's friends, the Saudi (un)royal family, which was more-or-less flown out of the USA days after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and while U.S. skies were under complete lock-down orders from the Cheney-(puppet-)Bush cabal.
Attention!?
I believe it was Glen Greenwald just recently illustrated Pelosi's motivation for taking impeachment off the table. She was one of three congresspersons to be briefed on Bush and cronies torture schemes and illegal wiretapping (I may be incorrect on one of these, but I doubt it. She can sue me.)She is highly motivated to prevent wide general knowledge of her complicity. Especially since it was five years ago and she never uttered a word of dissension.
I cannot vote for Cindy since I am in So. Cal. My Congressman is a bloody Republican, who is a complete corporate tool and is gay to boot. What's disgusting about this individual is not that he happens to be gay, but that he takes advantage of the fact that this haven for Orange County republican transplants has no daily newspaper of it's own to inform the populace of city leader shenanigans. Every city around us has a paper, one has two. The only thing covered: police activity.
This used to be a neat semi-rural area, with coyotes, hawks, deer, and all kinds of wildlife beside larger mammals. All the olive trees are gone, most of the eucalyptus, wine grapes and orange groves.
In my immediate area, the last 30 months or so have been the "developers" being blessed. It is now all paved, and residential. That's right, some are incomplete, vacant, the natural vegetation trying to reclaim some of it. We are talking thousands of people who bought these macmansions when real estate was peaking here and the "developers" are really eating it. (Snide laughter in the background.) Derelict, unfinished neighborhoods. Sidewalks that just stop where the investment turned sour, the road paving stopping where the last house, not quite finished, stands, being bleached by the Southern California sun. Yellow orioles, swallows, pigeons, gophers, opossums, yellow jacket wasps, all of these and more looking for a place to make a nest and raise their young...
SUVs up the gazoo, I mean Hummers, not Ford Escapes, big Cadillacs, etc. Plus their little brats riding dirt motorcycles on the street when obviously to young to have a license. Using Google Earth I can only find three houses with solar power, out of thousands.
When the housing market tanked and gas is now hitting $4.40 for "regular," It's been eerily quiet. There are no For Sale signs in yards, buy there are more and more signs of neglect, dead grass, "weeds", things not being fixed. And no neighborliness.
I spray painted, with glow at night paint, five years ago "Kriminals voted for Bush/Cheney" on my garage door. I made it look like vandals did it. At night my son and friends would go around tearing off ProWar, Bush/Cheney and American flag bumper stickers off all the Hummers, Suburbans, etc.
You don't see that stuff anymore. In fact, you would be hard pressed to find any political, election year bumper stickers.
Now that is really strange...
Cindy:
You are a TRUE PATRIOT. Let's give that scoundrel Pelosi and the criminals that back her the boot!
Thanks for your courage. Most of congress are a bunch of paid for cowardly prostitutes.
