COINTELPRO Comes to My Town: My First-Hand Experience With Government Spies
Finally, at long last, I have something in common with Muhammad Ali.
No, I'm not the heavyweight champion of the world, and haven't been named spokesperson for Raid bug spray. Like "the Greatest" -- not to mention far too many others -- I have been a target of state police surveillance for activities -- in my case against the death penalty -- that were legal, non-violent, and, so we assumed, constitutionally protected. In classified reports compiled by the Maryland State Police and the Department of Homeland Security, I am "Dave Z." This nickname was given by an undercover agent known to us as "Lucy." She sat in our meetings of the Campaign to End the Death Penalty, smiling and engaged, taking copious notes about actions deemed threatening by the Governor of Maryland, Robert Ehrlich. Our seditious crimes, as Lucy reported, involved such acts as planning to set up a table at the local farmer's market and writing up a petition. Adding a dash of farce to this outrage, she was monitoring us in the liberal enclave of Takoma Park, Maryland, a place known more for vegans than violence, more for tie-dying than terrorism.
Thanks to the Freedom of Information Act and the ACLU, we now know that "Lucy" was only one part of a vast, insidious project. The Maryland State Police's Department of Homeland Security devoted near 300 hours and thousands of taxpayer dollars from 2005 and 2006 to harassing people whose only crime was dissenting on the question of the war in Iraq and Maryland's use of death row.
My dear friend Mike Stark, a board member of the Campaign to End the Death Penalty is at times referred to in "Lucy's" report as a "socialist" and an "anarchist." One can only assume this is the pathetic time honored tradition of reducing people to simple caricatures, all the better to garner Homeland Security grant money.
Veteran peace activist in Baltimore, Max Obuszewski, who initiated the suit, was as well consistently shadowed as he walked down the streets. His "primary crime" (their lingo) was entered into the homeland security database as "terrorism - anti govern(ment)." His "secondary crime" was listed as "terrorism -- anti-war protesters." The database is known as the Washington-Baltimore High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area, or HIDTA. Yes, a respected peace organizer of many decades standing is checked as a terrorist, his actions listed as criminal, for doing nothing more than exercising his rights. It boggles the mind.
Former police superintendent Tim Hutchins defended these totalitarian practices by saying, "You do what you think is best to protect the general populace of the state." (The article mentioned that Hutchins is now a federal defense contractor. I guess The Global War on Terror is just the gift that keeps on giving for the Hutchins family.)
But "protect the general populace" from what? The surveillance continued even after it was determined that we were planning nothing more dangerous that carrying clipboards in a public place. Hutchins and the Ehrlich administration have undertaken an ugly violation of our civil rights, manipulating fears of terrorism to stamp out dissent.
This is COINTELPRO pure and simple. Like the infamous counter-intelligence program whose heyday many assume was a relic the 1950s and 1960s, it's an effort to harass the innocent and breed paranoia, all for daring to question power.
Governor Ehrlich and Tim Hutchins stand in the legacy of those who hounded Martin Luther King, and facilitated the death of Malcolm X. They stand in the tradition of those who drove the great actor, college football superstar, and activist Paul Robeson toward The mental breakdown that claimed his life. When Robeson's files were opened under the Freedom of Information Act, the results were terrifying.
As his son, Paul Robeson Jr. has written, "From the files I received, it was obvious that there were agents who did nothing but follow every public event of my father, or even of me.... It took on a life of its own.... Over time, even for someone as powerful and with as many resources as my dad had...the attrition got to him."
Now Robeson is on a postage stamp. The moral midgets who destroyed him went unpunished. That's what has to change. The ACLU, to their credit, is going on the offensive.
As ACLU lawyer David Rocah said at a news conference in Baltimore on Thursday, "To invest this many hours investigating the most all-American of activities without any scintilla of evidence there is anything criminal going on is shocking. It's Kafkaesque."
Unfortunately for people like Gov. Ehrlich, it is also "the most All American of activities" to take the constitution and use it as their personal hand wipe.
As the great political philosopher Ice T wrote, "Freedom of Speech.... just watch what you say." Well, now is exactly the time not to watch what we say. I'm angry. I'm angry for my friends, who trusted "Lucy" and others. I'm angry that my tax dollars went to paying the salaries of people who spy and intimidate those exercising their rights. I'm angry that Barack Obama just voted to increase the power of the Federal government to disrupt people's lives. And I'm angry enough that I'm joining a lawsuit initiated by the ACLU. "Homeland Security" picked on the wrong sports writer. They also picked on the wrong group of activists. We will not be silenced.
[People who want to express their outrage can contact the office of the current Governor Martin O'Malley. We should demand a full investigation of the MSP, public release of all documents obtained through this illegal activity, and a specific commitment that the anti-death penalty and anti-war movement will not be targeted. Call the office of the governor at 1-800-811-8336, or submit a comment online at http://www.governor.maryland.gov/mail/]

Show AllI'm curious if the designation of "terrorist - anti-government" or "terrorist - antiwar protestor" are something they just made up, or if they picked these from a list.
Typically, if you don't want a database to become polluted with a bunch of unconnected terms, and thus very hard to search, you give the users a pre-defined list of choices.
If they are on some predefined list, that tells you a lot about the purposes of the illegal spying on American citizens.
Shortly after Dubya got "elected" I filed an FOIA request for my deceased father's FBI file, which turned out to be about one and a half inches (and heavily redacted). There had been at least two separate investigations of him, the second in the late 50s when I was in high school in a small college town. It turned out that the FBI had visited the homes and offices of people who knew my parents and had interviewed them about his political sympathies (was he a Commie?). Of course those people were not to let on that they had been questioned by the FBI.
I was not "popular" in high school and I always wondered why. Now I know why! My father was a suspected Commie and my peers knew it. In effect, I was shunned. My father subscribed to The Nation. And, oh by the way, the FBI concluded that he was NOT a Commie, but did they revisit those they had interviewed to let them know that? Of course not.
Such intrusions into the lives of adults have (unintended?) consequences.

the government is now turning that imperial death machine - you know the one that heretofore has been occupied overseas, in other countries - on its own
no surprise here
google "fema prison camps" and see what you find - capacity for 1 million plus guests - in the continental united states
that would be you my friend
the american people are beginning to wake up and realize that they need to be afraid - very afraid - of their own government
looks good on you - now you know what the rest of the world feels like
and they aren't even shooting you down like dogs in the street yet
What is ironic about the COINTELPRO redux actions of the state of Maryland, the Feds, & most chillingly, private contractors is that they are going into overdrive as the policy that drove the protests has gone bad, just like Vietnam. Just as with that era, it is being done to tamp down on the "knock-on" effect (a growing revulsion with other Repug policies besides Iraq) that is starting to bloom all over the USA. Hopefully, progressives will learn from history and be prepared to counteract the same police state tactics that Zirin & Co. are just one of the many victims of. The one bright thing is that it appears as if the opposition has not learned from history.
One might not believe that such things can happen in America, but I know they do. I have been under surveillance for four years now, having survived a secret hearing (I was not invited to attend) and government computer hacking, since I entered the word "Godzilla" as a search term on the FEMA website. How can I NOT believe others' stories after living in one myself?
During the Serb/Croat/Yugo civil war..I was .."educated" to the reality of the word "TERRORIST" Slabodan Milosivic(sic?) was VERY fond of using that term..and there was one..occasion in particular..where several Western Military Officials were present...the 'Slob' was going on and on about "The TERRORISTS"..((AKA the Victims of his GENOCIDE..recall the photo's of the starving men behind raor wire..AND recall the..BEGINNING of the term.."Ethnic Cleansing"...anyway))..and these Guy's looked..really..UNCOMFORTABLE..I realized after awhile that it was because the 'slob' was...."weakening" the concept...the REALITY..in that case..SO PLAIN TO SEE..that these "Terrorists" were simply fighting for their VERY LIVES..actual SURVIVAL...and he was using the WESTERN VOCABULARY to DEMONIZE them...to this day..there is..CONFUSION when any "politician" is asked about a conflict in which ethnic cleansing or genocide victims, fighting back to survive..are refered to by the PERPETRATORS as "TERRORISTS"..you can SEE the ...twisted looks...mouth's turned up..teeth showing..as these "Western Diplomats" cringe at the idea that the word..that they are using to create Corporate Fascism..is used to define ANY RESISTANCE TO AUTHORITY..even LETHAL AUTHORITARIAN GENOCIDE...and I personally believe..that ONE way to...REDUCE the "power" of the word "TERRORIST" is to use it in conversation when referring to LEGITIMATE DEFENSE AGAINST LETHAL FORCE......AKA REBELS, FREEDOM FIGHTERS..etc...the Mexican Government calls the Chiapas land Reform Rebels.."Terrorists" and so does EVERY DICTATOR use that term to define and delegitamize ANY resistance to CORRUPT POWER POLITICS...SO...use that word to..casue people to..QUESTION just "What IS a Terrorist? is that ANYONE who resists Authority? Is that ANYONE who chooses to DEFEND themsleves against aggression?.." etc...figure it out..we MUST use "Counter Measures" wherever possible..in EVERY form..Psychelogical, Linguistic, technological..NOTHING VIOLENT...of course..BUT..since the Animal rights people are "terrorists" then..well..everyone is..Are YOU? am I?..According to the whim of the Federal Loyalist Clerk Army (THE "FCLA"?)...I am a Progressive Constitutionalist...what does that make ME?..Did you know also that among the laundry List of "Profiles" that are 'red flags" for "Terrorists" is.."......discussing the constitution....."..did you know that?
GHANDI, HENRY DAVID T. ET AL..TAX RESISTORS...IT IS THE ONLY WAY..

Withholding payment of taxes is one of the quickest methods of overthrowing a government. "
—Mahatma Gandhi
He or she who supports a State organized in the military way – whether directly or indirectly – participates in the sin. Each man old or young takes part in the sin by contributing to the maintenance of the State by paying taxes. "
—Mahatma Gandhi
I have heard some of my townsmen say, "I should like to have them order me out to help put down an insurrection of the slaves, or to march to Mexico, – see if I would go;" and yet these very men have each, directly by their allegiance, and so indirectly, at least, by their money, furnished a substitute. The soldier is applauded who refuses to serve in an unjust war by those who do not refuse to sustain the unjust government which makes the war… "

You can see a film about the history of COINTELPRO – The FBI's War On Black America here:

this is why I'm not paying taxes
So now we know how over 400,000 American citizens made it onto the so-called "Terrorist Watch List."
Recently, while walking back from the grocery store, a pair of crazed Dallas police officers jumped a medium strip, skid to a stop blocking my path, jumped out, and demanded to know what I was doing, who I was, etc.
When I told them to shove it up their asses, they threatened me with arrest on a variety of "resisting" and "failure to identify" charges. I responded that they should either take me in, or get lost.
Why did they harass me? Because they said I "fit the description" of someone they were looking for who painted "Stop The War" on the plywood surrounding a construction site.
1. check out what scroogle.org has to say about Google, and you may not want to "google" a lot anymore...
2. I just read, in The Unbearable Lightness of Being :
Is it better to shout[speak out] and thereby hasten the end, or to keep silent and gain thereby a slower death?
Having just recently seen the movie "Goodnight and Good Luck", and now reading this book written by an activist writer in Czechoslovakia (remember Czechoslovakia?)during Prague Spring 1968, I am struck by the timelessness of the situation and the dilemma we are all in. Seems like the ship is going down, politically, ecologically, economically (check out Clusterf**k Nation) http://jameshowardkunstler.typepad.com/
and the "powers that be" are intent on making it worse at every turn. Ward Churchill's http://www.wardchurchill.net/ book (On the Justice of Roosting Chickens)documents that this stuff has been going on under the Stars and Stripes since it was first made--from hemp, I have heard, but that's even another sad story.
Most of us seem to think we have too much to lose to put ourselves at risk, at least until we personally are targeted, though as Dave Z and others have discovered, we may be doing that even without trying or knowing. Kundera's comment came AFTER he (and his character) had already experienced the wrath of the "Powers". Kunstler seems to think the Empire is bringing itself down, and I have long suspected that to be the only way it can happen. Especially after We the People still believe in elections...
Samson: I would concur that those 'designations' probably came from a pre-defined picklist.
Jeezis..Frank1569..JEEZIS...so allow me to please add..to the "Terrorist".."definition"...
"ANYONE WALKING DOWN THE STREET!"
Good Lord...Choke!
I would like to add also that Frank is CORRECT..you CAN still call the BLUFF of the PIGS..((not all cops are pigs..yaddah..yaddah..but more and more ARE..see: BLOWBACK for some serious FEAR))
Anyway..i was recently stopped on the Highway..RANDOM stop..so called "Check Point'...I was asked to "step out of the vehicle" the whole Police Stae terrorize the public protocol..okay..LONG story SHORT..
The asshole could see that I was IRATE...and so..of course..ASKED TO SEARCH MY VEHICLE..I SHIT YOU NOT..'FOR HIS OWN SAFETY'..
I said NO!
This really took him ABACK..he obviously did not think that was OKAY....and asked me 'WHY"..I blurted out.."becasue i don't believe in it...in fact I resent it.." this also seemed to surprise him..and it surpried me too..also at this point..i was getting so NGRY..that a weird thing started to hapen..my LIP began to..TWITCH..like..a SPASM..i was quivering with rage at this..OUTRAGEOUS ABUSE OF POWER...this asshole was just FUCKING with me..and i was being COOL..to boot..don't misunderstand..i had done NOTHING WRONG..had been curteous..etc..and it..DID NOT MATTER..
he THEn..brought out the DOG..after circling my vehicle four times..he said..that the dog "was allerting to several spots on my vehicle"..I again surprised myself by saying.."well..i have no idea why..maybe i drove throught something..i dunno.."
this kind of..'stand-off' ensued..like he was..waiting me out..like a "stress position.me standing there..the highway..cars whizzing by..like if he waited long enough..i would blurt out my sins and beg forgiveness..it was very surreal..
Finally he asked me..and this is almost the weirdest part...if i had any money on me...i took out like the four dollars i had in my pocket..and that seemed to actually trigge some kind of reality check in his cop mind...and he said put it back in your pocket..loaded up his dog..said he was 'not going to cite me at this time.."..which i did not see as a favor as it had been a 'random' stop to begin with...like he needed a "exit'..a "victory' a personal rafirmation of his 'Power' before he could leave...i said "okay"..and that was it....as I drove away..i could see him sitting there in his cop car..and i never saw him pull onto the highway...I almost felt..sorry for him...his pathetic life of fucking with people...divorce...alcholihism..then the horrible mid-life crisis and eventual suicide...it really was an odd moment..
THE POINT: after this..I have NEVER again..and WILL never again..take it for granted that a cop can do..'whatever they want" his cop..was called out..by me..admittedly by ACCIDENT...bu it worked..and he COULD NOT SEARCH MY VEHICLE..even with his dog..'allerting"..even though i saw the dog do NOTHING but look like it wanted to take a piss and was bored out of it's mind..it never sat still..never looked at him..nothing..unless they are telekinetically linked..which i doubt...the Cop is too dumb...the Dog would be driven insane if it was able to peer into the mind of the pig-man
Anway..FRANK did the right thing..CALL THEIR BLUFF..if we all do this...and complain to boot...file complaints..I DID THAT BY THE WAY..nothing happened..but i did complain..andwe all should..call em out...make em go ON THE RECORD...make em waste time and money...make em realize the FUTILITY of their job..
Also..Frank..think these idiots were Iraq/Afghan Vets?...that is COMING folks..act now..3 yar cooling off period before entry of a vet into law enforcement..etc..etc..these guy's have been CONDITIONED to the idea that there are NO rights for a person on the streets..Kill you..rape yor Daughter...S.O.P...with a gun and a badge..YOWZA!
An like that..way to go FRANK..you made my day..
Gee, wonder if I can find out through the FOIA if they've been spying on me. I mean, I LOATHE George Bush and Co., think they have destroyed our country (even more, not like it was perfect before), and have publicly said so, even have (pretty dang funny) anti-Bush/etc. poetry published in an anti-war-in-Iraq text.
Hey to all of you (seriously UN-American) spies out there (you know, they of course spy on commondreams bloggers):
You will be remembered by history in as negative a light as the McCarthy-era goons. Quit your spy job now and help protest! Before it's too late... And don't worry; Jesus will still love you. It's obvious- I've listened to how these people talk amongst themselves, they really believe they are religious crusaders, in a fight against evil, evil meaning anyone that disagrees with them, isn't "one of them"- the conservative Christians are in control and their goons thoroughly indoctrinated.
Besides for the typo. errors, it's a very good article, important information, ... etcetera. I had read a little about the topic in the following article, but it's definitely welcome to have someone who was among the targeted activists provide an article on the police state fascism and/or totalitarianism that happened.
"Maryland troopers spied on activist groups
Protesters added to database of terrorist suspects",
by Shaun Waterman, UPI, Jul 20 2008, originally Jul 18
http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=9623
On July 13th and on TeleQuebec (TQC), which is always in French, though this documentary had english subtitles for the english-speaking experts who were interviewed, I viewed the two-hour "Robert Capa: In Love and War" (translated from the English original). His real name was Andre (French) or (I guess) Andrew Friedman, although they didn't specifiy the spelling of his last name, so maybe I'm misspelling it. And he was an anti-fascism war-time photographer who, according to this documentary anyway, became a world-renowned war-time photographer.
His photos (some anyway) are shown during the second hour of the documentary, and they were clearly good, but while the first hour is what I'm intending to refer to. The first part needs to be fully re-viewed, for I didn't catch all of it; but it definitely seemed much like the notorious 'Operation Gladio' black ops of the U.S. in numerous enough European countries. And the first hour specifically refers to what the U.S. covertly did in Romania, Hungry, and another country or two, perhaps Poland and another; if not also more.
What the U.S. covertly did was to infiltrate peaceful anti-fascism activist movements, public dissent movements, inserting undercover agents who committed acts of violence, while the real and very many dissidents were entirely peaceful in their activism. This would obviously cause the fascist state leaders to send in armed forces, and this happened with ... horrific results. Many of the real activists were killed, while others were brutalised; etcetera.
The first hour ends with the example that occurred in Romania in 1989, and many experts were interviewed for this. One is Robert Baer, a former CIA agent or official, while two others were a former French govt intelligence agent or officer and a historian. There were more, but I need to look for a copy of the documentary to see the whole first part and take notes.
I don't know if that was part of 'Operation Gladio', but it's what came to my mind; and this op. also happened in Greece, many countries of Europe and (I guess anyway) Eastern Europe. Perhaps also Italy, but I've only read of Op. Gladio a few times, it's been a while since reading the last article, and I am not a person to memorise things; only looking for the thematics of disguised realities, logic, .... After all, we did not need to be historians in order to immediately realise that the wars on Kosovo (1999) and Iraq since 2003 could never be justified; commonsense being all that was needed to be able to SEE and very clearly. And I don't care if Christopher Columbus, that idiot, and worse, came to North America in 1492, 1480, 1500, etcetera; only needing to know what he did, what this led to, and that he was a queen's goon, jerk, ass, .... Damn ass(w)hole!
Part of the second hour on Friedman's anti-fascism and war photography spoke of him having gone to what became a fascist Spain, when fascist and psychopath General Franco feverishly worked to overthrow the not perfect, needing some improvements, but still good socialist govt there. The documentary, however, did not mention something I've read more than once, by more than one author, about that history, and it's that Franco was supported by Adolph Hitler, Benito Mussolini, the Vatican, the U.S., the govt of which made it illegal for any Americans to go to Spain to join the anti-fascist opposers of Franco (et al), while the Lincoln Brigade courageously acted against that fascist U.S. law. Franco also had other backers, from some European govts, from what I recall anyway.
More U.S. fascism and pro-fascism, hellishly so? OK. Check out the 'Salvador Operation' (or Option, I think Option, actually) the U.S. covertly conducted in El Salvador during the 1980s. Also check out the new examples, rebirth of that kind of covert U.S. black ops, which can be seriously read about by reading from an index at the Brussels Tribunal website. To find that index is very easy, only requiring to do a Web search on 'Brussels Tribunal' (no space, and dot org) along with 'Salvador Option Exposed'.
I haven't read much from that index yet, but definitely have read some of the articles copied following the considerable list of resource links at the top of the page, and two of Max Fuller's article. The index for his articles is linked at the top of the BT index. There's also the index for articles by Sarah Meyer, who I personally learned to be a good resource writer, but of the several articles by her in the index for her at BT, I only saw links with titles indicating three or fewer of her articles copied at BT are specifically relevant to what this post I'm making is about. (She has much for a good resource, but I didn't see more than a few links to specifically relevant articles.)
I definitely recommend reading the articles copied in the main BT index page, and those by Max Fuller, for starters. For starters with the BT index, that is; but it shouldn't be missed by anyone wanting to know what the f*ck's been really going on, and which surely continues. It's a very rich index of articles; some being more like news reports, while others are serious analyses.
What's going on, really, in Somalia, Sudan, etcetera? MUCH the same thing! Following is a good and important article on the real situation in Somalia, and there's plenty more at the website on also Sudan and other African countries; there likely being an index for these at GR, or else easily found using simple keyword searches.
"Bush's Rampage in Somalia",

During the early phase of the war on Iraq, many cyber-activist writers wrote that all we need to really do is to, 'CONNECT THE DOTS'! It's not too late to start!
When we do that, then we can SEE that what happened to Dave Zirin and many other peaceful and correctly based activists in Maryland is even [to be expected], certainly not surprising. Understand the thematics, and we'll understand that this example was and is no surprising fascist matter.
Oh, and while on the topic of all the gov. spies and their ANTI-AMERICAN spy activities... the level of paranoia they share with other policing forces today is just absurd.
Did anybody else hear about how the feds and local police at this year's Rainbow Gathering were harrassing people (hippies, folks, as in stoned and mellow and in a loving atmosphere) and these cops were so AFRAID of all these hippies, obviously a fear generated by their indoctrination to a shared culture of the Christian far-right that continues to blindly support Bush/Co. So, this FEAR of "the enemy"- hippies, for crying out loud- caused the cops to forget how to THINK, and so they started shooting non-lethal though extremely painful weapons at people in the crowd. The crowd of course became upset (even hippies have a limit) and basically chased them out of the Gathering. These cops get to remembered for their stupidity FOREVER- check out google videos, look up, Rainbow Gathering 2008 and see the videos, then write the police forces involved and tell them what a great job they are doing in helping destroy democracy.
Any Republicans on the Watch List?

That sounds ODD, for the opposition, to me, are the "progressives", the anti-fascism, ... activists. So it'd need to be clarified who the heck NateW is speaking of as 'opposition'. There's opposition against the fascism, and opposition against the latter and by the fascists and their supporters.
As for bashing the Repubs, maybe people haven't read or heard of the following news yet; or maybe they have and don't think it's of value (?).
"Nine Republicans Vote for Impeachment Hearings, Ten Abstain
by Ralph Lopez
Global Research, July 20, 2008",
originally July 16th,
http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=9628
EXCERPT:
In a stunning development which fell with the silence of a feather yesterday, 9 Republicans broke with their iron-fisted party to put country first, and voted to send Rep. Dennis Kucinich's article of impeachment HR 1345 to the Judiciary, where Chairman John Conyers will hold hearings on abuses of power by the Bush administration, according to the Congressional Quarterly's CQToday.
Ten Republicans abstained in this critical moment, while only 5 Dems did. The vote was neck and neck at many moments, with "Nays" pulling ahead twice.
END EXCERPT.
I don't know of what significance that news is, for voting for the impeachment bill to go to the Judiciary is too much burying or shelving it while trying to do so with an innocent face mask. So it can be only to seem right, while really intending not to be. Maybe there isn't a real choice, but I don't know what the reason for that would be.
Naomi Wolf, in "The End of America " , lists 10 steps used by fascists to close an open society.
Step # 4: Surveil ordinary citizens
Step # 10: Cast criticism as "espionage" and dissent as "treason"
And yes, Bush/Cheney are also following the other 8 steps.
The most dangerous people possible for Bu$h the inferior, Shotgun Dick and the other fascist pigs in this administration are those that fight the death penalty. All the collaboration with Saddam is not likely to come to light now that he was murdered by a kangaroo court.
Besides people who are not afraid of criminals that deserve death are unlikely to be good little corporate mechanoids. The disease of peacefulness might spread.
""Nine Republicans Vote for Impeachment Hearings, Ten Abstain"
If they don't distance themselves from Bush, they won't get re-elected.
"If they don't distance themselves from Bush, they won't get re-elected.
"
And the Democrats will get re-elected anyway?
These brown shirts who carry out these vile surveilances are the real terrorists.
let's not also forget the connection to the Miami Model of harassing perfectly legitimate protestors. it's all part of the same old story of American politics. but now, maybe enough people are awakening to the fact that this country is in no way, shape or form a democracy.
Just ask the Quakers....... Anti-war people/demonstrators are always viewed as the nemesis of corporate war whores!
"You do what you think is best to protect the general populace of the state. (The article mentioned that Hutchins is now a federal defense contractor."
Sure you do - especially if there's a better paying job waiting for you after you "buy-in" to the Bull$hit!
I guess we'll never know who actually DID paint "Stop The War" on the plywood surrounding that construction site, but I respectfully salute that Unknown Peace Graffitist.
mrE said: "this is why I'm not paying taxes."
good luck with that!
ezeflyer said: "Any Republicans on the Watch List?"
Are there any Democrats on it? There's no evidence as to the political affiliation of the article author and his friends except that one apparently said enough to get himself branded as a "socialist". Since I highly doubt most FBI goons know a "socialist" argument when they hear one, I'm guessing it was a case of self-labeling in the agent's presence.
And since several of his books are published by Harmarket Books, I'm guessing Zirin is a radical too.
I only recently decided to vote third party in the next election, but I'm an unusual case. Almost everyone I've met who calls him or herself a socialist staunchly refuses to vote Democratic. Is contemptful of the very idea, in fact.
Why isn't Tim Hutchins in jail?
BTW Doll's comment about "brownshirts" reminded me of possibly my favorite song of all time.

Tangentially, REAL ID has come to Maine. Some good citizens tried to stop it and when it became law, we tried to get signatures on petitions for a citizen's referendum to put it to a vote in November. At the same time, petitions to repeal an increase on sales tax on sodas, beer and wine (which went to fund low income health insurance) were being circulated to also put that item out to referendum.
Guess which item got enough signatures and which will remain law? (Hint: People care more about a sales tax on beverages than they do about their civil liberties.)
As Maine goes, so goes the nation.

"What the U.S. covertly did was to infiltrate peaceful anti-fascism activist movements, public dissent movements, inserting undercover agents who committed acts of violence, while the real and very many dissidents were entirely peaceful in their activism. This would obviously cause the fascist state leaders to send in armed forces, and this happened with … horrific results. Many of the real activists were killed, while others were brutalised; etcetera."
Google "Tommy The Traveler" and read a couple of the articles that come up. This was part of COINTELPRO. And FBI agent was travelling around several upstate NY colleges urging violence, trying to foment violence, so the cops could come in and make arrests. THIS IS ALL TRUE. I can vouch because I lived in Waterloo, NY at the time, just four miles from Geneva, NY, the home of Hobart And William Smith Colleges where a ROTC building was burned.
Obviously these assholes are up to the same things again today.
For a dark laugh and a prophetic look at where the US, UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy and Canada are going check out the Michael Palin film 'Brazil'.
Follow it up with 'V for Vendetta', 'The Handmaid's Tale', 'Equilibrium', 'Fahrenheit 451', 'Soylent Green', 'Rollerball' (the original), and just to get a feel for the coming post oil world, 'Mad Max: The Road Warrior'.
DHS is an enormous bureaucracy needing to justify its existence. The Maryland project is likely one of hundreds that will be reported to Congress, in toto, as millions of dollars and person-hours spent in protecting the US from "home-grown terrorists".
For the record: Although Paul Robeson attempted suicide he died of a stroke at the age of 77.
jcrumb,
Good for you. Never agree to a vehicle search thus denying them the opportunity to plant contraband. And don't think they won't do that if you are targeted.
Back in the 1950's during the commie scare, the activities described here were used as examples of what would happen in the U.S. if we became communist. Ha!
This country has always been borderline fascist but the ease with which we are turning into a police state is astonishing.
I remember reading about this resurrected Cointelpro several years back in mainstream media. I even contacted legislators to voice my opposition to these blatant violations of Constitutional protections, but all I heard from them was that we need to "protect" the country from "the terrorists." No, we need to protect ourselves from our own fascist police state.
It's that sense of living in a STATE of paradox, as the more we learn about these events and KNOW they are true, the more part of us asks, "Can this REALLY be happening?"
I had an idea for a short story (or movie) come out of this discussion. It would be based on the guy paid to do the spying... or surveillance of say a group like ours. And there he is, like many of us, reading through the posts every day; but a srange thing happens, he can't help feeling an affinity with either SOMEONE in the forum, or the gist of its most important ideas. And when push comes to shove, he can't be the one to arrest those who speak the truth of his own conscience.
Fiction? Or another example of living in a state of paradox?
One also has to wonder how many civilians aid and abet groups like COINTELPRO, or just take matters into their own hands via threats and harassment? This is why so many people remain silent and self-censor.
They can come and get me. Bring it. All they do is debase the country and expose to the world what they stand for. Those who even attempt to stifle dissent might as well be conjuring the ghosts of Hitler and Mussolini. They hate the world, for they silence those who are simply trying to make it a better place through veracity.
And THEY want us to believe that men and women of peace epitomize danger and evil, that we need to worry about poor, desperate people and not THEM.
Once again, THEY are but a relatively tiny cabal. WE are legion. THEY had better pray to whatever devils they worship and do all the can to distract and intimidate. God help THEM when the noble dragon that is the majority awakens. THEY can't watch us all.
I saw a certain movie this weekend, one that reminded me of my demon and why I have one. This is yet another reason.
Villains define the heroes. And Dave, while I don't always agree, you are The Dark Knight as far as I am concerned.
What the hell does "redacted" mean? Why continue using Orwellian government terms?
It's "CENSORED."
Defund the police. Clearly, they have too much time on their hands and don't know what crime is, can't follow the Constitution.
Work with your local city councils to transfer the police budget to the fire department, libraries, or schools. Fund civic organizations to feed and house the poor, but cut the police budget.
Well people didn't stand up for American Indians and especially Leonard Peltier during their Civil Rights movement, when COINTELPRO infiltrated the American Indian Movement and falsified information to convict Peltier who has now been in prison over thirty years. Why do you think people should give a rip about a sports writer named Dave Zirin? Selective justice does not work!
Fuck the government, fuck the police.
George Bush is an asshole.
Okay, which list did I just get on?
The main enemy of liberty, democracy, and justice is oppression.
Oppressing and denying people's right to speak, act, and demonstrate for or against beliefs is what the communists did, the Nazis, and the US Government is doing.
Don't trust the history books or the Mainstream media to present the truth. Just look at how they intimidated us into this illegal and immoral Iraq war. All lies, and more lies and deceit.
Why don't we speak up? We might get hit over the head, or worse.
History as we know it is a distortion. Most wars were little people (like you and me) standing up against systematic injustice by an oppressive and violent force that is protecting the corporate elite. But they are the powerful, with the guns and the money.
The powerful now have private armies (Blackwater etc) that is being financed by US tax dollars that will soon be used against us little people when we start questioning the war, injustice, corporate crime etc.
My parents fled a communist country (now a free country). I'm thinking of fleeing back.
There is no peace without justice, and no justice if it is based on lies.
The freedom of speech is the mother of freedom.
If you do not speak freely, you cannot know your mind.
If do not know your mind, you cannot control it.
If you cannot control it, others will be most happy to do it for you.
Therefore preventing free speech is necessary to totalitarianism
Lucy needs a good thrashing.
Lucy you should be ashamed of yourself! Did you somehow miss in your education what the constitution is.
The constitution was written not to protect us from foreign enemies.. But to protect us from the inevitable abuses of our own government, which in you in your ignorance you have engage in.
Nothing in the constitution is more precious to freedom then the right to freedom of expression..
I just wonder Lucy, what part of the word "freedom" you do not understand.
You Lucy have become the face of the police state. Are you proud ?
We need to resist the American corporate totalitarian regime. Dave Zirin did the right thing. So did Frank 1569. It is *not* TOO LATE. Their courage is what we need to demonstrate. Bravo to Dave Zirin and Frank 1569.
In the early 1930s, a young attorney in Germany was sitting in the library at the university where he worked. Jewish businesses had been boycotted. And Jewish attorneys were being fired by armed authorities from the dominant party. They came into the library and began identifying and taking out the Jewish employees. When they came to him—a progressive, white, Aryan German citizen—and asked him if he was Jewish, he paused . . . and said "No." They went on by him.
Haffner later reflected that this was his first failure. He didn't defy them. He didn't refuse to answer or ridicule them for asking. The story is recounted in Sebastian Haffner's memoir called Defying Hitler, an account of the years from 1914 (when he was seven years old) to 1933 when he left Germany and it became TOO LATE.
For anyone who wants to see how a totalitarian state arises, and how it can become TOO LATE, I recommend Haffner's book. He wrote it in the 1930s. He left it in his desk until his son found it after he died in the late 1990s. My library had it.
It is not too late . . . YET.
Mike Corbeil - was that confusion on your part or obfuscation in an attempt to detract from a relevant point? Anyway, when I wrote of "opposition," I was referring to those whom do the dastardly deeds that Dave Zirin wrote about. The salient point is that the forces of regression (who now use private contractors a la the Pinkertons of the Robber Baron era) are up to their old tricks. It is incumbent upon progressives to learn from history (unlike their opposition [are you not confused now?], who are tied to a losing policy) and be creative in countering these scummy tactics. It is a sign of weakness whenever one's opponent goes with the same tactics they used the last time: it is an even greater weakness to fall for them.
Engineering Your Own Nightmare...
I kid you not...On the very day the Patriot Act was signed into law, a new neighbor moved into a condo next door to mine; after his extensive remodeling to the premises, it became abundantly clear to me I was being irradiated and monitored; even V2K was used to try to destabilize and discredit me...the apparent motive was to try to get me into police custody.
Now, I suspect I am not alone in this kind of harassment. I dare say the solution to this is for a grass root movement by the people in order to condemn and isolate the federal and state perps from a funding perspective. This means the economy has to get worse before things can get better. Any other ideas?
" ... after his extensive remodeling to the premises, it became abundantly clear to me I was being irradiated and monitored;... "
Care to elaborate? I don't doubt you, I'm just curious. Totally understand if you would rather not.
Kent
any state or local authorities who aid federal agencies in constitutionally illegal spying on INNOCENT american citizens are TRAITORS and CRIMINALS and they deserve full prosecution and to be sentenced to long terms in jail, up and down the line of command. to posture lawful american citizens as anti-war "terrorists" is to brand 1/2 of americans terrorists. anyone who gives an order to spy on americans against our constitutional freedoms is a SCUMBAG, and anyone who follows an order to rob america and americans of their freedoms is a scumbag and terrorist.
unlike COINTELPRO, this time the american people arent going to let the criminals walk away. lawenforcement is NOT above the law. THIS TIME THE SCUM ARE GOING TO JAIL, and they'll be needing large concentration camp type facilities to hold all the traitors in lawenforcement who thought it was fun to ignore the law and harrass americans!
Siouxrose:
For movies like you're talking about, check out "Scanner Darkly" (this is kind of a computer animated film, but interesting just the same, with Woody Harelson, Robert Downey Jr, Wynona Ryder and others) and "Lives of Others" (which I believe won an academy award for best foreign film).
