Army to Shoot Live Pigs for Medical Drill
HONOLULU -- The Army says it's critical to saving the lives of wounded soldiers. Animal-rights activists call the training cruel and outdated.
Despite opposition by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the Army is moving forward with its plan to shoot live pigs and treat their gunshot wounds in a medical trauma exercise Friday at Schofield Barracks for soldiers headed to Iraq.
Maj. Derrick Cheng, spokesman for the 25th Infantry Division, said the training is being conducted under a U.S. Department of Agriculture license and the careful supervision of veterinarians and a military Animal Care and Use Committee.
"It's to teach Army personnel how to manage critically injured patients within the first few hours of their injury," Cheng said.
The soldiers are learning emergency lifesaving skills needed on the battlefield when there are no medics, doctors or facility nearby, he said.
PETA, however, said there are more advanced and humane options available, including high-tech human simulators. In a letter, PETA urged the Army to end all use of animals, "as the overwhelming majority of North American medical schools have already done."
"Shooting and maiming pigs is outdated as Civil War rifles," said Kathy Guillermo, director of PETA's Laboratory Investigations Department.
The Norfolk, Va.-based group demanded the exercise be halted after it was notified by a "distraught" soldier from the unit, who disclosed a plan to shoot the animals with M4 carbines and M16 rifles.
"There's absolutely no reason why they have to shoot live pigs," PETA spokeswoman Holly Beal said.
The bloody exercise, she said, is difficult for soldiers because they sometimes associate the animals with their own pet dogs.
Cheng said the exercise is conducted in a controlled environment with the pigs anesthetized the entire time. He had "no doubt whatsoever" in the effectiveness of the instruction, which he called the best option available at the base.
"Those alternative methods just can't replicate what the troops are going to face when we use live-tissue training," he said. "What we're doing is unique to what the soldiers are going to actually experience."
Cheng didn't have details about the number of pigs, how they were acquired or the weapons involved in the training.
The soldiers being trained are with the 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, which is deploying to Iraq this year.
"We understand (PETA's) concerns and point of view. At the same, the Army is committed to providing the soldiers with the best training possible," Cheng said.
Disappointed at the Army's decision, PETA on Thursday instructed its 2 million members to inundate the Army with calls and e-mails.
"We're hoping at the 11th hour here that we can have this stopped. We have to hang on to hope," Beal said.
PETA believes the U.S. military has conducted similar training at other bases using pigs and goats.

Show AllCan we begin with the pigs at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue?
Are you kidding me. My husband is a medic in the us army and saving a life on the battle field is not something to be taken lightly. My god if it were your son or daughter or husband or brother that was seriously injured would you want soldiers learning on them. I think that you would hope they knew what the hell they were doing and it was not the first time they were treating a gun shot.
Sad. Shame. Disgust.
The government, military and human race somehow sinks lower again.
Go vegitarian and dont pay taxes, or at least do as much as legally possible to rip the government off at every oportunity.
Then again the damn politicians will just cut funding of important things and take 3/4 of your pay instead of just half
And the US wonders why it's losing respect overseas. But this seems perfectly consistent with the corporate corruption and greed associated with US involvement in Iraq. Self interest at what cost and to whom?
Why stop at pigs?
The present US administration should go straight to their Nazi roots and fill the Halliburton/KBR built 'detention facilities' with 'undesirables' and inject gasoline into their veins to see the effect.
Just when you think the US can't possibly scrape any deeper into the bottom of the barrel, they go and dig a new sewer.
The US deserves every possible indignation and embarrassment that is coming to it.
Karma is a BITCH!
Every time I think humanity can't sink lower I'm proven wrong.
... and you'd better believe that he expects those pigs to publically apologize to him afterwards!
I understand that Deadeye Dick Cheney is personally participating in this program, given his personal experience in shooting alcohol-anesthetized critters.
So does this mean that the military will start passing out anesthetics to all the folks on the ground before dropping bombs on them ?
They have been doing this for many years. But the fact that some people joke about it and use pigs as an insult(very benign intelligent and sensual creatures) is part of the problem.
Bush is a human--a far bigger insult.
Pigs are saints next to humans-the garbage can species of planet earth.
It is heartwarming to read the comments of those who are aware of what's going on and to realize there many who understand that our society is in a precipitous decline. The loss of our humanity is assisted and abetted by the war criminal Bush. Keep on blogging!
I wonder how many pigs suffering from gunshot wounds they'll be likely to come across in Iraq? The species, apparently, is not very popular there.
But, seriously, this smells like some kind of setup. Why would the Army announce in advance that it is going to do something like this? Is it trying to draw a crowd of protesters?
I can just picture some miserable old right-wing Senator, pounding on the podium with gnarled fists and brushing away crocodile tears: "You see! You see! These liberal SWINE care more for their fellow PIGS than for our brave fighting men and women... (sob) ... vote for John McCain!"
Or maybe the Army is just clueless as usual and figures this will be a good opportunity for some positive PR...
when this earth becomes too unbearable because the humans commit such atrocities, our young will hate us....hopefully what is in store for us will be quick....but somehow, i don't think it will be...
Luau.
Maybe we should be passing out the absolute best body armor money can buy before we start blowing pigs away.
Explain to me again why it is that Americans are so proud of their armed forces.
NO FUCKING SHAME, OR TOO FUCKING STUPID?
I am not a vegan but I am appalled in any case. Can our failure as human animals get much worse?
An M-16 round is very small (.223 cal) compared to most NATO approved ammunition. However, the casing that holds the charge is much larger in proportion to the bullet itself. What that does is fire a very fast projectile into the target (pigs, humans, whatever). When it hits the target it sort of explodes and rips apart flesh and bone. Just one of these bullets would leave a small wound at the entry point and a large messy hole where ever it exits. If it hits a small to medium size animal like a pig I don't think there would be much left to work on. Man's inhumanity to man is one thing but inhumane treatment of animals is unthinkable and unforgivable. They put Michael Vick in prison for Dog fighting but the US Army can shot pigs. The injustice continues. Also I wonder about the veterinarians that would participate in such heinous act. I am glad to be a Vegetarian.
Disgusting. I wonder what idiot general came up with that idea? And why? Why pigs?
Do they remind him of his fat wife, snoring in his ear?
I had a farm, and I've killed pigs. The last pig I shot looked at me with a horrified expression that I've never forgotten. She couldn't believe what I had done. What rotten treachery!
I don't even kill roaches now.
Babe the gallant pig joins the army!
This is a crock of manure. There are plenty of people getting shot up daily in Iraq, Afghanistan, etc., to "practice" on and save. This pig shooting for "healing" practice indicates the mentality of the military today and how low and foul the sewer is that we have called home. The term humanity has little meaning any longer. We dropped two nuclear bombs on populated cities, use white phosphorous, napalm, cluster bombs, DUI, "smart" bombs, etc. So we shoot up some pigs? Just goes to show you how WE are the PIGS!
Nothing our military does surprises me anymore. It just disgusts me to no end. I just add it to my list of repulsive acts our government institutions perpetrate on other countries, humans, animals, oceans, skies, etc.
I want out of here.
Do not shoot the president.....first.
They have been doing this in Emergency Medicine training for years. Not just the army are doing this. They use anesthetized pigs to practice procedures on. Pretty sick.
NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
The picture of that pig looks just like our Republican Senator. ___ Really, it does.
"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated ... I hold that, the more helpless a creature, the more entitled it is to protection by man from the cruelty of man". - Mohandas Gandhi
For a long time we were told that nonhuman animals are senseless automatons. We know better, of course, but it seems that the military mindset is perfect for making truly senseless automatons out of human beings.
ah, mordechai, mordechai............ha ha ha ha ha ha ha....ad infinitum
The Army says it's critical to saving the lives of wounded soldiers. How apt, they often act like swine.
I have an even better idea: Set up field stations in your inner cities. From what I've heard, they offer boundless opportunities for practising the treatment of gunshot wounds in humans.
So they're going to be anesthetized the whole time.....would you like to be taken apart bit by bit, violently, even if you can't feel the pain of it, but are conscious and experiencing it?
You can judge a society by the way it treats animals. As long as we desensitize ourselves by considering animals less worthy of kindness and consideration, torturing, killing and eating them, we will continue to kill and maim members of our own species through all types of violence. There will always be the "other", that is less worthy of decent treatment.
Go vegan.
Hey, there's one "live pig" they can shoot . . . his name is George Wanker Bush.
