Bush Won't Give Congress Papers in CIA Leak Probe
WASHINGTON - President George W. Bush, asserting executive privilege, has rejected Congress' request for documents on FBI interviews with Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney from a probe to find who leaked the identity of CIA agent Valerie Plame Wilson.
The Bush administration said on Wednesday that turning over such records would violate the president's rights to counsel from his staff.
In a letter to the House of Representatives Oversight and Government Reform Committee, U.S. Deputy Assistant Attorney General Keith Nelson wrote, "The attorney general has requested that the president assert executive privilege with respect to these documents and the president has done so."
The letter was delivered on the same day the committee was scheduled to vote on a possible contempt resolution against Attorney General Michael Mukasey for failing to provide the requested information.
Rep. Henry Waxman, the California Democrat who chairs the committee, called the executive privilege claim "ludicrous," but postponed committee action against Mukasey, saying lawmakers needed time to review Bush's claim.
In 2003, as the Bush administration was preparing for war with Iraq, media reports surfaced discussing Wilson's work at the CIA. She is married to former ambassador Joseph Wilson, who at the time accused the Bush administration of tailoring intelligence information to justify the Iraq war.
Following the federal probe into the matter, Cheney aide Lewis "Scooter" Libby was convicted on obstruction and perjury charges. Bush subsequently commuted Libby's 2 1/2-year sentence.
Waxman said the probe did not get to the bottom of Cheney's possible role in the leak, prompting his committee to seek the FBI documents.
"There is a key document that could explain what the vice president knew and what he did," Waxman said, referring to Libby's statement to the FBI that it was "possible" Cheney instructed him to blow Wilson's CIA undercover identity.
Waxman also noted that a letter from Mukasey to Bush dated Wednesday regarding the executive privilege stance "also raises questions about the president's involvement ... the documents being withheld summarize conversations held directly with the president."
Both Mukasey and Nelson wrote that the White House has attempted to accommodate Waxman's probe of the scandal by making available some FBI reports of interviews with senior White House staff and agency officials.
"We are not prepared to make the same accommodation for reports of interviews with the president and the vice president," Nelson said.

Show AllOh, sure, President Unitard and Deadeye Dick can cheerfully blow off Congress NOW-- but they'll be singing a much sorrier tune after they receive that Sternly Worded Letter!
Of course Bush is not going to GIVE anybody anything. Congress has some power left if only they had the balls to use it.
Bush wins again.
As I recall, publicly exposing intelligence service agents real identities was listed as an act of treason. For which, I believe, the penalty is death by hanging.
So why, oh why, would Bush refuse to give over the papers, I wonder?
Things that make you go 'Hmmmm?'
Send them to the international tribunal. War crime againt humanity, Pinochet was probably less evil then these guys at the white house. Maybe not...yet.
Will someone please wake me up when Congress actually does something other than hold hearings with no follow up action?
^^^ That should give you a longer snooze than Rip van Winkel.
Obviously, it doesn't matter much what Bushco allows or does not allow Congress to see. They won't do anything about it anyhow. They're already well aware of the essential facts, but can't afford to take any action that would inevitably implicate them in as many treasonous plots against the Constitution as the executive.
It's my opinion that these criminals intend to run the clock out. Since dems are also implicated in many of the crimes they will let it happen. It will be up to honest and fact driven historians to expose the crimes of the last 8 years. Most of us will be dead by then.
The Republicans are defying a subpoena and the Democrats need to rehuddle and talk about what to do. Meanwhile the clock has all but run out. Soon the Democrats will say it's time to let it go and move on in the best interest of the nation.

-typical Democrat, Bush has no standing but..........
Waxman said the probe did not get to the bottom of Cheney's possible...
-notice how the Democrats all but let the clock run out before initiating all these "investigations"
Democrats that didn't even bother to show up and vote on Mukasey's nomination:
Obama, Clinton, Dodd and Biden. He was confirmed 53-40 in spite of the fact he refused to say whether water boarding was torture.
The following Democrats voted to confirm Mukasey:
Evan Bayh
Thomas Carper
Dianne Feinstein
Mary Landrieu
Ben Nelson
Chuck Schumer
Joe Lieberman
Had these eleven Democrats voted against McKasey he wouldn't have been confirmed. Not that it matters, someone just like him would have gotten the job and the Democrats would've confirmed him too.

-BINGO!
You rob a bank, without a mask, in broad daylight on a busy street. You shoot the guards and repeatedly rape the secretaries with the cameras rolling. Your getaway driver waits outside. Finally, you take off, make it safely home and are sitting in your favorite comfy, padded, leather armchair counting the loot while watching TV and drinking a nice cold beer.
Then suddenly, someone knocks on the door, interrupting what otherwise would have been a perfect afternoon. You answer the door and its an annoying Democrat all dressed up in a Keystone Cop outfit complete with badge and pistol. He wants to question your driver about running a red light and look at his driver's license. Wouldn't this really piss you off?
What would you do? I would tell him, "HELL NO and GET LOST!"
Whats the Keystone Cop going to try and do? Try to arrest you for not letting him question your driver and see his license? All you'd have to do is refuse to be arrested. I mean, you already got away with murder in broad daylight.
Once again dry-drunk King George gets away with another treasonous, criminal act while the toothless, complicit, enabling Congress does nothing.
:(
Executive Privilege! the new POWER!
..as Bush said, it sure would make it easier if he was a Dictator in a interview waaay back.
Well, he is working on making that happen and with the help of Congress, he will succeed.
Like a rat in a hole.
TAILCAP: Apt gallows humor, although it's getting harder and harder to laugh at what's taking place. It truly defies belief!
I don't usually cross-post, but the comment I made in another string seems even more appropriate here.
How can we count on the Democrats when, even with a majority, they sit up and speak, roll over and play dead, and accommodate every order that comes from the "Unitary Executive," with no more than a token protest, if even that?
Eight years of careful observation shows that the Democrat and the Republican is a two backed beast. One back has an "R" on it and the other has a "D." Buried in the middle are some wealthy CEO's and powermongers pulling the strings.
It would be nice to see people of principle running for high offices. People who would say, "This is the problem, and this is how I will address it if I am elected."
Instead, we get vague promises, which are changed, reversed or forgotten as the political wind changes.
In a nation where the government is only loyal to the moneyed interests that bought and paid for it, rather than the people who elected it, and who refuse to even discuss Constitutional issues, beyond eagerly voting for legislation to trash it, I can only conclude that it no longer makes a difference which of the two alleged parties gets in.
My father's definition of an honest politician was, "One who stays bought." The United States obviously has the most honest politicians that money can buy.
No surprise here. The admin will stonewall and Congress will bluster but ultimately do nothing.
Were Congressional leaders concerned about public opinion, they would change direction and fast. After all their approval ratings are below even Bush's - single digits. If that's not a clear signal to change something, there is not one.
So, what game are the Dems playing other than dead.
They are totally bought or complicit in the crimes of the Admin. So, they will never act.
The only chance the people have is to force them to change.
Which way to the Bastille?
How can any human being ever vote for people who aid and abet war criminals, people like Congress.
INTERIOR SHOT-FANCY BATHROOM: President Bush looking in the mirror..as he runs a hand through his hair..looking self satisfied and smug..he smirks, give's his reflection the FINGER..and say's with shere murderous contempt:
"..I've got mine..FUCK you!"
One thing that really just..AMAZES me is the SURREAL level of this "Administrations" HYPOCRISY!..Specifically the idea that He..BUSH..Der Junior can and DOES fall back ALL the TIME on his "RIGHTS" and..hee is the really amazing part...CLAIMS HIS RIGHTS WOULD BE VIOLATED IF HE WERE TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT HE HAS BEEN ABUSING AND IGNORING THE "RIGHTS" OF THE AMERICAN CITIZESN HE IS SUPPOSED TO "SERVE"...read: His "RIGHTS" FIRST!...THEN yours..just..flat out..admitting it..right there...knowing the American power of.."reason' is to weak on average..to pick up on this basic double standard..AMAZING!
Oh yeah..ALSO..another componant of that ...CLUSTER of Hypocrisy...is that he is ADMITTING...DIRECTLY..that he ASSUMES the right to place HIMSELF ABOVE THOSE HE IS SUPPOSED TO "SERVE"...
For me..this GROUP of actual CRIMINAL double standards is ..THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS...as an above post put it..Waaayyyyy down the Rabbit Hole....Bush went into his rabbit hole on 9/11...and NEVER CAME OUT..and neither has the NAtION..that footage of him going into the "Bunker" was the footage..really...of AMERICA going into an authoritarian Era...Down in that Hole..Decisions were made...COG was enacted..the Continuity of Government placed CHENEY in charge..and..these SAME SWINE are now STONEWALLING on the front as well..yeah..people..have you heard? that BushCo won't..WILL NOT give the paper work to Kucinich re the COG STATUS...Good ol Kucinich..i WONDER WHAT IT IS THAT HE CAME ACCROSS OR SAW THAT HAS MADE HIM INTO A REALLY WORRIED MAN...DOING EVERYHITNG HE CAN AS FAST AS HE CAN...HE IS SCARED..AND IT SCARES ME THAT HE IS SCARED...
Anyway..we are still down in that hole..
oh yeah..on a SIDE NOTE..it has alway's bugged me a little..that the OTHER little gem of hypocrisy regarding "that day"...there is Bush Et Al...SCURRYING down in their Hole...and then..they crawl out..and ATTACK OSAMA FOR HIDING IN THE CAVES? SAY WHAT? From that moment on..the HYPOCRISY has been...so BALTANT as to be secondarily..an INSULT to the American self image..especially as regards the AMAZINGLY QUESTIONABLE POWERS OF OBSERVATION AND LOGIC of the American people..PRESENT COMPANY EXCEPTED OF COURSE..
But to NOT be able to determine WHEN you are bing fed such..OBVIOUS BULLSHIT..and so BLATANT a package of LIES, Double talk, hypocrisy..is...EMBARRASSING..frankly!
Bush uses his RIGHTS..to shiled himself from the repercussions of his ABUSE of the RIGHTS of others.....WOW!
STOP PAYING THIS GOVERNMENT FOR "REPRESENTATION" YOU ARE NOT RECEIVING!
I wonder how he will escape prosecution on January 20?
He better have a really good lawyer.
George Bush has been a snot nosed arrogant little "privileged" prick his entire life, and has NEVER had to suffer the consequences of a lifetime of fuck ups, and he ain't gonna start now. For him President equals "executive privilege", so "fuck off, I do what I want." And congress will cower once again, (they must have removed all mirrors from their homes and office restrooms, certainly they could not seriously look at their faces without a severe nauseous response).
Whoever wins, you sill find that there will be a blanket pardon for Bu$hCo on January 20th, and the whole thing will be swept under the very filthy rug.
The same was done with Nixon. He was facing impeachment. There is no pardon after impeachment (Read your Constitution) Hence the deal, "I'll resign, you pardon me, and we'll just forget the whole thing." Done!
With this "legislative" gang, impeachment is not even "on the table," so whoever gets in will just issue a pardon "so the country can move on" and business as usual will continue. War, giveaways to the wealthy and powerful, and the eventual bankruptcy of the United States.
The war criminals will take their ill gotten gains and retire to their ranches and villas and continue to run things from the shadows.
Amazes me how Dick's lips don't even move when George is talking.
No, Obama/Prog Dems and Bush/McCain/Repugs are NOT the same thing.
Republicans are fascists.
Republican jack-booted thugs like Blackwater, the KKK, the neo-nazis, the Xtians and the Zionists are among their less scrupulous operatives.
Republicans are working for total control of the Pentagon, FBI, CIA, NSA and other powerful institutions in their version of the SS and Gestapo.
Find out what modern fascism is like, read today's CD article about Genoa.
If you don't like these Democrat useful idiots (which I don't), vote them out of office. Campaign for Greens and Progressive Dems to substitute them:
"The following Democrats voted to confirm Mukasey:
Evan Bayh
Thomas Carper
Dianne Feinstein
Mary Landrieu
Ben Nelson
Chuck Schumer
Joe Lieberman"
Don't let loathsome conservative Democrats win by throwing the baby out with the bathwater. By casting non-strategic votes that will let the fascists gain power. Things can get a lot worse with another Repug administration.
Much as we love Nader and McKinney, a vote for them is a vote for McCain. The dangers of another Republican administration are too horrific to contemplate.
Work to allow Nader and McKinney into the debates. They may be able to change some petrified thinking in the American public.
Somebody shit in their cornflakes.
ezeflyer July 17th, 2008 3:36 pm writes Democrats win by throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
-its not the baby, it's the practically whole damn bathtub!
http://projects.washingtonpost.com/congress/110/senate/1/votes/181/
Vote description: This $120 billion dollar package was passed in the Senate by an 80-14 vote on May 24. The bill primarily focuses on funding for the Iraq war but also addresses other unrelated topics.
Ten Democrats opposed this new bill with no withdrawal deadlines, while 37 supported its passage.
37 Democratic Senators supported the war. 10 opposed.
Time to dump the Democratic party altogether and start building a second party.
One difference that I see between George W. Bush and Adolph Hitler is that the Nazi Dictator kept copius records.
They were similar in using Weimar Republicans from both sides of the aisle.
One used Gleichschaltung and the other used the USAPATRIOT Act to destroy their democracies.
Try bush for the murders he's committed. Its time to move this to the next level. These two are the most corrupt politicians in the history of the USA Its time to bring criminal charges against them both
Well, of course he can get away with it. After all, he's the Urinary Executive!
I never thought about spitting at someone as I find it atrocious...until now.
The Checks and Balances in this government are all in the Treasury Department now.
And the Balances are all negative.
Does anyone have good information on emigrating to the European Union ?
You'll all please excuse me while I go throw up.
the dems are spineless, does anyone really think these people become representatives to fight our causes. how you could vote for either party is unthinkable. not me anymore. i keep saying we need more parties. so this year its the green party.
Do NOT put pressure on the NAZI,,,,,
Or you will be put on the Terrorist Watch List...... better than being in Jeff Gannons' Black book....
Coffeelover,,,,,,, If you want America back you need to go out of your way to just tick em off....

I would venture to guess that most in this country are aware of the lies and hypocrisy, the question is why do they let it go. Some just don't care, some are too preoccupied, some are too comfortable to rock the boat, some are complicit, some are afraid, some are happy with this, and so forth. There a lot of 'somes' and the end result is apathy.
It is ludicrous that the Bush talks about the Constitution as just a piece of paper, and now hides behind it to protect himself against incrimination. A real scum sucking pig.
and so it goes, the bush crime family continues to thumb its nose and not recognize any authority other than its own.
So??
The right wing military complex, banks , and big oil have hijacked America.
They have had 8 years of putting into place all they need with billions of dollars going to Bush's Private good old boy network. Haven't you noticed that they are getting away with everything they want , and no one can stop them.
They used 9/11 and fear to hijack this country.
Watered down the constitution, torture, and brain wash a public so desperate to want to do something because of 9/11
that the Stasi Police have taken over.Spy networks and community watch.
Try to cross these greedy bastards and watch how they attack and destroy to keep thier pie.
As long as we are at WAR they will run this country, and that includes Obama and the Democrats.
I hope to God I am wrong, and I am voting Obama, but I don't trust this in group traitors.
They have been bribed, blackmailed, and put to bed soaked in fear mongering cash.

You want change . . . .
Change yourself and vote third party . . .
Otherwise "Shut Up" and support the Status Quo.
The change will happen when the American public changes. Until then we will only get more of the same after November 2008.
So sit back and grab your remote and watch the propaganda because that is the way it will be until WE make the change.

You want change . . . .

-why do you want to vote for a third party when we don't even have a second?
Vote for McKinney, Nader or second party!
Bush is Little Nixon
rebelnow, you are right about Bush. He is a spoiled rich kid that has never had to face any consequences of any sort for his actions. He is like a teenager left home while his parents are on vacation and it's party time. The Congress is a pathetic bunch of people (there are a few that have some integrity) that do not have the brains or the brawn to do the right thing.
I have called my Senator at different times about a vote like the FISA bill. He voted for it. I will not be voting for him again.
Vote third party! Die for your principles!
Alles fur Amerikkka!
The amount and nature of disingenuousness in this Administration is not at all surprising. It has been claimed that the Bush presidency is the worst in this country's history. The American people elected it to two terms of office. Who do we have to blame? Not Bush and/or Cheney, but ourselves. John Kerry would have been considerably more honest.
Little Brother---Thanks for the laugh! And you are soooo right!
Since nothing can be done and everyone agrrees not one thing can be done, the I guess we should bendover just take it.
Blowback's a bitch.
Racehorse: My Granny said, "don't bend down!". Ever.
To me the following statement and Kucinich's single Article of Bush lying about Iraq and War are the poignancy of the day:
"In 2003, as the Bush administration was preparing for war with Iraq, media reports surfaced discussing Wilson's work at the CIA. She is married to former ambassador Joseph Wilson, who at the time accused the Bush administration of tailoring intelligence information to justify the Iraq war.
Following the federal probe into the matter, Cheney aide Lewis "Scooter" Libby was convicted on obstruction and perjury charges. Bush subsequently commuted Libby's 2 1/2-year sentence."
Butch/Cheney will say one thing until the end of the trial in the Senate: "Unitary Executive, Executive Privilege..." - so a time to consciously decide as a Nation is here in a form; to what has played out sub-consciously on an organic level: Monarchial Rule - thumbs up or thumbs down? Red pill or the blue? The Red Coats or The Freedom Fighters of The American Revolution?
Maybe it's time to help stiffen the resolve of Our Representatives in Office with the echoing of The Argument, it's what got US into Our current "Mess" when Our Right Hand did it, maybe Our way out is with one echoed Argument From The Left?
"...he [Kucinich] is not deterred by the rampant, unceasing violence currently wracking our country and our world. Rather, he quotes Ralph Waldo Emerson, saying, "Every jet of chaos which threatens to exterminate us is convertible by intellect into a wholesome force."
I am torn between impeaching bush and just giving up and waiting until he is just a bad memory.
I think the real action needs to be clearing the Congress and starting over with new people. People willing to do the right thing. Next year we will either have McCain or Obama for president. While either will be an improvement over bush (they have a brain) neither will make the hard choices that need to be made. We need to have a Congress that will step up and take control.

"Once again dry-drunk King George gets away with another treasonous, criminal act while the toothless, complicit, enabling Congress does nothing."
Can anyone tell me what treasonous, criminal acts bush/cheney have actually been held responsible for yet - out of the dozens we've seen listed here on this site?
I still wonder why " We The People" don't take a few days to get together all over this land and mourn the death of the US Constitution, which means the American Experiment is over. Or, maybe you haven't yet realized that, not only is it Congress being complacent in these illegal acts but " we the people " because we are just going along with them by doing nothing.
How hard would it be to pick a few days in which we might mourn and make the statement that this illegal bunch of unconstitutional rabble don't represent us. They may have grabbed the power but not Constitutionally.
We The People may have God given rights, but if they can take the Constitution so easily with nothing being done, how long do you expect to have rights or anything else?
I'm serious and wonder what YOU think?
