Congressional Panel To Review Kucinich's Call to Impeach Bush
But the House committee won't actually consider removing the president from office.
WASHINGTON - Rep. Dennis Kucinich's single impeachment article will get a committee hearing - but not on removing President Bush from office.
The House on Tuesday voted 238-180 to send his article of impeachment - for Bush's reasoning for taking the country to war in Iraq - to the Judiciary Committee, which buried Kucinich's previous effort.
This time, the panel will open hearings. But House Democratic leaders emphatically said the proceedings will not be about Bush's impeachment, a first step in the Constitution's process of a removing a president from office.
Instead, the panel will conduct an election-year review - possibly televised - of anything Democrats consider to be Bush's abuse of power. Kucinich, D-Ohio, is likely to testify. But so will several scholars and administration critics, Democrats said.
The hearing is a modest gesture by House Democratic leaders to members like Kucinich who insist that Bush's reasons for going to war meet the standard for impeachment. Kucinich had said that if his impeachment article is tabled he would just propose another one.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has made clear since she ascended to that post that there would be no impeachment proceedings. But that didn't stop Kucinich from introducing 35 articles of impeachment, spending four hours in June reading them on the House floor and demanding hearings. The House summarily dispatched them for burial to the Judiciary Committee.
Kucinich came back with a single article, which was read into the record Tuesday. As it did with the others, the House referred it to the panel, chaired by Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich.
But this time, Pelosi said with a conspicuous lack of enthusiasm, that it would see some committee action.
Democratic aides said the hearing could take place as soon as next week.
The impeachment resolution alleges that Bush misled the public into thinking that he had no choice but to wage war on Iraq and implied that Iraq had helped al-Qaida with the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Democratic aides have widely suggested those gauging the bill's prospects look to a precedent: the impeachment articles against Vice President Dick Cheney, which were sent to Conyers' committee in November. There's no evidence they will be considered before the Bush administration leaves office in January.
Those were Kucinich's, too. Republicans, seeing a chance to force Democrats into an embarrassing debate, voted to bring up the resolution. Democrats countered by pushing through a motion to scuttle the bill from the floor.

Show AllThe President alone decides policy and action and disregards, not only the people, but also their elected representatives.
Nancy Pelosi, on her own, disregards even a majority of her own Party to decide how the government will act. How in the name of Beelzebub can you call your country a Democracy? It is patently an elected autocracy, and not even a fairly elected one.

The Democrats will conduct an "election-year review" of Bush's abuses of power, but not pursue impeachment - that's what this article says.
Such bold moves like this one must be what Obama means when he talks about the "audacity of hope." Translation: hope all you want, because you are fucked. And, by the way, thanks for all of the campaign contributions, you suckers.
As much as I like Kucinich, I wrote to him years ago about impeachment, but he refused to pursue it back then. He was decent enough to respond with a personal e-mail saying as much, though.
Now, it seems, Kucinich waited until the impeachment motion would be buried and then scored some points with the base without accomplishing the objective. Clearly, though, the Democratic Party will not impeach, so it's all moot.
So goes the republic.
Bush's unpunished crimes will be precedent for a future President Obama to commit war crimes too. Obama can't seem to stop talking about bombing Pakistan and Afghanistan of late.
It's the same difference. Chumps will vote for Obama and they won't notice that the policies haven't changed. Meanwhile, the empire limps on to its final doom while the bodies pile up.
It's time to embrace the coming deevolution. Accept the endless "No." You can start by tripping up the pollsters. Lie to them, make up stuff. Burn you supermarket discount cards. Bicycle to work. Stop buying things (if you have money). Don't invest (if you have money). And above all, vote third party. Stop pretending it'll all go away in the morning because that's not the plan. Stop cooperating with the machine that doesn't care if you live or die.

yes, well, i've been pondering such things lately. i have many ideas on the subject. but won't open my mouth and maybe put my foot in it!!! you're right - stay calm..............i like 'ear benders' btw.
Pelosi took an oth to uphold the constitution of the USA so has no right to take anything off the table. So many fool progressives blogg away expecting the Democrats to become an opposition when all the evidence of the last 20 years or more has shown WITHOUT ANY DOUBT that hey have been bought off by the same interest groups that have hijacked the Government.
Why do you keep expecting any different from any of them? How stupid can you be especially after Obama disgraceful stunt at the Zionest Nurenburg rally quickly followed up by the warrentless wiretap immunity flip flop.
Why has'nt Kucinich and a few other not defecteed to form a 3rd party?
Why does the USA not support more than just 2 parties?
Until a 3rd party is formed nothing will change although I believe it is way too late now in any case.
How can any progressive vote for the democrats again? Better to elect Mc Cain than allow the democrates to hold progressive to ransome once again. Vote 3rd party or accept that your democracy is dead.
robertsgt40 has got it right.
IF, by the way, Kucinich, who talks a great talk and whose actions in Con have little or no impact on events other than to make some of you "feel good", WERE engaging the enemy in a meaningful manner, he would have long since, as I have stated to him, publicly denounced the other party (as well as the entire bogus scam called "our" government) for what it truly is and refused to be a part of it.
However, he has not done this, and still maintains his ludicrous position within the corporate criminal establishment. He is just a front.
UNTIL he steps up and publicly states the obvious that every single wage slave knows only too well:
There is no representation of the peoples will.
There is no system of checks and balances.
There is no free and fair electoral process.
There is no justice.
There is no Bill of Rights.
There is no Constitution.
YOU, the citizen, are irrelevant, other than as a consumer and an enabler.
Every serving member of the corporate representative is a war criminal.
(I´ll except Cynthia McKinney until more information is gained)
Every single member of the bogus cabinet is a war criminal.
Every serving member of the armed forces who willingly embarks to serve a criminal enterprise against innocent peoples, is, beyond reasonable doubt, a war criminal, as well as a traitor to the US Constitution.
Go ahead. Plead to me your ignorance.
The very first duty of a citizen of the planet is to...think.
Impeach will not do. Impeach what? By whom? Do you see my point?
JUSTICE is required.
The only people who are going to give the world justice are it´s wage slave citizens.
The enemy of human brotherhood at any cost to others is banking heavily that you will not rise to the occasion and defend yourselves.
So far, it seems like a pretty good investment.
Trust me when I say the pandemic of corporate criminality is global.
We are moving rather rapidly down the road to that hell of our own choosing due to our cowardice in the face of the known enemy at large. Much like the Germans (as only one example) of an earlier era.
I say we all roast some marshmallows and make smores and sing Kumbaya with Pelosi... isn't that sweet that she is granting a special "Year end election review"...
Gods if they had any less backbone they would turn to sea slime excrement.
Oooooh and MAYBE ... just MAYBE they will televise it for all us peasants and we can see them wagging the finger at Bush and going "tsk tsk tsk".
Geesus Christ.
I already wrote Pelosi and told her what I thought.. Not that her highness will give a ra.... care...
I am wondering if the President in his last 6 months of his presidency did something REALLY REALLY REALLY Heinous.. on National TV would Pelosi take impeachment off the table then? I wonder if he would even get arrested?....
Talk about Teflon president...
As a reward for Dennis doing his homework, Mrs. Pelosi will let him invite and few friends over, stay up late and watch TV. And he is REALLY good, she will make chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast.
COCO: If not later this year, possibly early spring.
BEOWULF: Excellent post! You laid it out clear and simple.
WORDS ARE IMPORTANT: Very good! That is why I left the Democratic Party...in disgust. No way I could ever vote for Obama.
THOUGHTS_INTO_ACTION: Right on! Also A very good post.
NYVISITOR: You may have hit the bullseye.
TONYR: I agree with you. I wanted progressive change and left the "get along" party and joined the Green Party. We have our work cut out for us but at least it's in the right direction.
When the Repulsives are in the majority, they belittle the Dimwits (aka Democrats) and treat them as naughty, unruly children, but when the Dims take over, they try not offending the Repulsives and praise the "bipartisan" effort in working with (and enabling) their "gentle friends" on the other side of the aisle. And the public keeps falling for it year after year. Unbelievable.
My progressive friends, Glenn Greenwald's post of July 15 tells us exactly why our wonderful Dems refuse to investigate King George's lawlessness !! It is also why they will only give Rep Kucinich 'lip-service' to his bills of impeachment, hoping it will make him 'go away' !
REMEMBER, this is the same House that passed a bill known as the ..."Homegrown Terrorism Act...' with 404-6 vote count in favor. When passed, this act will damage our Constitutional Rights 100 times worse than the so called Patriot Acts. Thank, blue dog Demmy Jane Harman, D- CALIF !, for introducing this insult to America !!
****These are the same Demmys who possessed all the pre war intelligence reports, the UN Reports, the common sense of all America that NO WMD's existed in Iraq, but who voted to give King George War Powers anyway==how then can they impeach the King when they all knew he was a Liar, and they all bought into it !!! It did Sen Clinton no good to lie and say ...Duh, I just didnt read the National Intelligence Report when I voted for the War..Duh'' and there she and Chelsea go dodging gunfire at the airport, too. Sure, and guess who's Secret Service Detachment was headquartered in Building #7 World Trade Center on 9/11 ?
So, Rep Kucinich has been extremely repressed by the mainstream media== all during the candidate debates-- especially ABC--who also put out a blacklist of companies who should not advertise because National Public Radio was welcome on their radio stations. I hope he uses this as a bully pulpit to get out the TRUTH about the failings of his own party, and they are just as much a Criminal part of the DC Culture of Corruption, as King George and his neocon regime. !!
Saloo:
You are the loonie. To support a jerk on his reference to impeach the constitution, you are the one who is pompous and arrogant. A rich man/woman for sure.
You yourself will want the constitution when the US Corporate dictator comes to take your money and home. What will you do? Being rich doesn't make you immune either. The king/President/ whomever, always gets what he wants as He/she is the Dictator and you are powerless. Then you yourself will be screaming for your freedoms which you will no longer have.
Cheney wants a Monarchy and stated so yesterday. I guess that is what you want as well. More power to a dictator then in your book and the people be damned.
Poor little Nancy, she must really be hiding something that Bush managed to find out about her after 9/11. He had access without question to communications and other stuff we don't know about through his excuse of executive power. Poor Pelosi, she is being blackmailed and doesn't have the spine to stand up to it.
I laughed so hard my gut started to hurt when I read comments form those who worry that the US will become a police state as bad as China or Russia. I just spent the month of June in China, as I often have in the past, and I have to say the US is already like China, except the US has more police, more prisons, more prisoners, more violence, more corruption, more ignorance, more dishonesty, more disinformation, more con artists, more propagandists, more gullible people deluded about the honesty and good will of those in power, more waste, more mindless consumerism, more decadent and disinterested young people, a more sophisticated and extensive spying apparatus, and more, a whole lot more, military-industrial complex.
We are way past China and are approaching a certain 20th Century European regime with certain harsh attitudes with regard to what were considered the "losers" in society.
I HAVE NEVER SEEN SUCH A BUNCH OF
WORTHLESS ASSHOLES IN MY 74 YRS.
