McCain: 'I Know How to Win Wars'
ALBUQUERQUE -- Arguing that the status quo in Afghanistan "is not acceptable," Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) suggested today the U.S. can win the battle against the Taliban by "applying the tried and true principles of counterinsurgency used in the surge" in Iraq. In a prepared speech peppered with attacks against the presumptive Democratic nominee, Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.), McCain suggested Obama had been proven wrong in Iraq and lacked the judgment to oversee military forces in Afghanistan and elsewhere.
"I know how to win wars. I know how to win wars," McCain told the audience at a town hall in Albuquerque. "And if I'm elected President, I will turn around the war in Afghanistan, just as we have turned around the war in Iraq, with a comprehensive strategy for victory, I know how to do that."
McCain outlined a plan that includes sending at least three additional brigades; establishing a "unity of command" that will oversee U.S. as well as NATO forces; appointing a "Afghanistan czar" to report directly to the president on the progress of the war; and a boost in non-military assistance.
The presumptive GOP presidential nominee openly mocked Obama for his inexperience in the region, saying the Democrat had made up his mind about the war without surveying how U.S. troops were faring there."Senator Obama is departing soon on a trip abroad that will include a fact-finding mission to Iraq and Afghanistan. And I note that he is speaking today about his plans for Iraq and Afghanistan before he has even left, before he has talked to General Petraeus, before he has seen the progress in Iraq, and before he has set foot in Afghanistan for the first time," McCain said. "In my experience, and I've traveled around the world, usually at your expense, fact-finding missions usually work best the other way around: first you assess the facts on the ground, then you present a new strategy."
McCain read two different quotes from Obama providing contrasting view of Iraq. In January 2007 the Illinois senator said of the surge, "We cannot impose a military solution on what has effectively become a civil war.... I don't know any expert on the region or any military officer that I've spoken to privately that believes that that is going to make a substantial difference on the situation on the ground." A year later Obama said he said that he had "no doubt" with the increase in troops "we would see a reduction in violence" in Iraq.
"My friends, flip-0floppers all over the world are enraged," McCain said, as the friendly Republican audience laughed. "It gives new meaning, it gives new meaning."
In addition to detailing how he would wage the fight on the ground in Afghanistan, the Arizona senator said he would work to rout out insurgents in Pakistan and convince Afghanistan's neighbors the country should shift "from a theater for regional rivalries into a commons for regional cooperation." Modeling his approach on Iraq, McCain said when it came to terrorists enjoying sanctuary in Pakistan, "This must end."
"We must strengthen local tribes in the border areas who are willing to fight the foreign terrorists there -- the strategy used successfully in Anbar and elsewhere in Iraq," he said. "We must convince Pakistanis that this is their war as much as it is ours. And we must empower the new civilian government of Pakistan to defeat radicalism with greater support for development, health, and education."
Taking a further swipe at Obama, McCain argued that his opponent's willingness to consider a military strike against Pakistan has undermined counterinsurgency efforts there.
"In trying to sound tough, he has made it harder for the people whose support we most need to provide it," he said. "I will not bluster, and I will not make idle threats. But understand this: when I am commander in chief, there will be nowhere the terrorists can run, and nowhere they can hide." The audience cheered.
McCain took pains to point out that when it came to Iraq, both he and Obama "agreed the Bush administration had pursued a failed strategy there and that we had to change course," but only he backed the surge in troops there. "Today we know Senator Obama was wrong," McCain said. "The surge has succeeded."
Buoyed by surveys like this week's Washington Post-ABC News poll, which shows Americans give him higher marks as a commander in chief than Obama, McCain argued he has already shown he is better prepared to wage war in Afghanistan and Iraq. "In wartime, judgment and experience matter," McCain said. "In a time of war, the commander in chief doesn't get a learning curve. If I have that privilege, I will bring to the job many years of military and political experience; experience that gave me the judgment necessary to make the right call in Iraq a year and half ago."

Show AllNow, THIS is a REAL treat!
McCain and Obama swinging War Boners at ten paces.
It's like something out of a fairy tale! Which prince will prevail, and ascend the throne in the white palace in the Shining City on the Hill?
I'm voting for McCain. After the polar ice melts, hurricanes ravage the globe, pollution blocks out the sun, the seas are black with oil spills, DU has destroyed the arable land, and the stench of bodies is overwhelming, we can still raise the American flag in the wasteland that was once a nation.
Oh say can you see? We've WON!
McCain "I know how to win wars, I know how to win wars".
Obama's rebuttal, "Oh yeah well I know how to win wars, I know how to win wars, I know how to win wars!"
This is the first time I've heard of someone bragging that they know how to win wars based on their experience as a POW in Vietnam. F___ing surrender monkey.
rebelnow: rofl!
McCain's repetitions smack of senile dementia rather than the political 'rule of three'
It is the job of the Defense Secretary and the armed forces chiefs of staff to know how to win wars.
It is the job of the President and the Congress to know why and when to go to war and what is worth fighting for.
McCain is claiming to be qualified for a lower-level position in government.
Didn't we lose in Vietnam, the only war McSame ever fought? How is that knowing how to win? Pathetic, bizarre, revolting.
War with McSame, War-light with Obaminable.
Vote McKinney. Vote Nader.
McCain plans to win in Vietnam . . . excuse me, Iraq . . . by bringing back the draft. Like Nixon in 1968, this is his "secret plan" to end the war. The bottom feeding, stinking, cowardly congressional Democrats will go along, even if it means political suicide and mass civil disobedience by 18 - 25 year olds facing meaningless death or grievous, life ruining wounds in the shallow, mass graves of Iraq and Afghanistan, soon to be followed by Syria and Iran. McCain is going to defeat Obama, as George Wanker Bush defeated Gore and Kerry. They won't even have to fix the election this time. MASS STUPIDITY, the Republicans' greatest ally, aided by racism, will clinch it for him. Strap on your pop guns, citizens of America, and march steadfastly forward into the meat grinding maw of the "new and improved" bloody disaster you call VICTORY!
And Senator Obama knows how to pay for them.
"I know how to win wars. I know how to win wars,"
-Sure you do, this from a "pilot" that finished 894 out of 899 at the Naval Academy and then proceeded to crash five jets. McCain and Dick Cheny should go hunting for quail together.

Give the country back to the Taliban. Sure the women will be kicked out of school, music will be banned, and other religions sacred sites will be blown up- but these are the Afghans problems, not ours.
The Taliban were unable to rule over all of Afghanistan even in their heyday (partly why they were not recognized as a legitimate regime by 99% of states). The idea that they can simply take over the whole of Afghanistan when foreign troops leave is not tenable given persistent ethnic and religious cleavages symbolized by warlords. In Koran, Kalashnikov, and Laptop: The Neo-Taliban Insurgency in Afghanistan, Antonio Giustozzi noted how the Taliban have tamped down on ideology and moral strictures and appeal instead to nationalist sentiment nowadays to garner support (a la Stalin in '41 when German forces invaded the Soviet Union). Tariq Ali is of the opinion that "their political evolution would be more likely to parallel that of Pakistan's domesticated Islamists if the invaders were to leave." In Pakistan's North West Frontier Province the influence of the Taliban's ideological bedfellows was reduced the old-fashioned way: they couldn't deliver on their promises of 2002 and were thrashed by secular parties in elections five years later. Tariq Ali's solution to the conflict now:
...would require a withdrawal of all US forces, either preceded or followed by a regional pact to guarantee Afghan stability for the next ten years. Pakistan, Iran, India, Russia and, possibly, China could guarantee and support a functioning national government, pledged to preserve the ethnic and religious diversity of Afghanistan and create a space in which all its citizens can breathe, think and eat every day....Religious extremists would get short shrift from the people if they disrupted an agreed peace and began a jihad to recreate the Taliban Emirate of Mullah Omar.
Mordechai Shiblikov,
Yesterday, I posed the question on the Scott Ritter article thread: since our military supposedly is tired and stretched thin, will McBush or McCain or Obomba reinstate the draft? I agree with you. I think that is the way Johnny Bomb Bomb claims he would win a war. His major complaint about the Bush Admin. SNAFU in Iraq was the lack of enough troops in the beginning.
So, which one is 'just like Bush?'
They both seem to be converging on just what AIPAC wants.
If any American citizens read this post:
"Court Backs Bush on Military Detentions
New York Times, United States - 1 hour ago
By ADAM LIPTAK President Bush has the legal power to order the indefinite military detentions of civilians captured in the United States, ..."
Wow! What a country! Free room and board and sadomasacistic games for a llfetime, no matter how your's might be.
'I Know How to Win Wars'
...from inside the Hanoi Hilton?
What does it cost in blood and treasure to avoid wars?
When did he 'win' a war?
He got shot down, spent five years in prison, collaborated with the enemy (see counterpunch.org, or the bbc video with his warden who fondly remembers all the talks).
He did all of this in a war the US lost.
American elections seem to be about who can sling the most bull the fastest. Fire the starting gun, the first to 1000 whopping lies is the next Pres.
Read the article I saw up here in the last couple of days about the US hiring mercenaries abroad.
They are following the Hitler formula, which is to try to keep the homefront as normal and undisrupted as possible. They know the civil unrest a draft will cause, so they won't do it.
Instead, they offer citizen ship to immigrants who join the military. And they recruit mercenaries from around the world.
"McCain and Dick Cheny should go hunting for quail together."
Cheney would 'accidentally' shoot the driver, then McCain would wreck the car on the way home. Obama would then come by and convince the cops not to arrest them or give them breathalyzers, arguing that these should be reserved for 'important matters'.
I know how to end wars forever. I know how to end wars forever. But of course I can't get elected because ending war ends the profiteer gravy train. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could have an election some day where we didn't feel the "need" to have a "military man" at the helm because there had been no wars for decades?
half-a-brain mccain knows he can get away with saying these things - even the "100 years" remark and the staggeringly stupid "bombbombbomb bombbomb iran" joke (ala bush looking under some tables and chairs for wmd) - because he gets a pass in the media who absolutely will never mess with his "war-hero" narrative. and as long as they don't shed any light on it, it will be the filter throught which all comparisons are drawn with obama.
funny though, that he cannot distinguish between war and illegal occupation.
so I guess our troops should all get captured, imprisoned, and, tortured. Experience counts
How can you know how to win wars when you never mastered flying an airplane?
No he doesn't, he certainly didn't do anything to win Vietnam, and he can't "win" in Iraq any better. What would Mccain know that the joint chiefs of staff don't know? The top admirals of the navy and generals of the air force?
Nothing.
I was wondering what could be a more sorry-assed thing to read today than Obama's renewed waves of pandering to imperial delusions. Now I know.
The first five or more years cost something like 4 trillion. Four more years costs what, 3 more trillion. Now here's the news: the cupboard is bare now. No food. That last can of stuff that you don't really like all that much, you ate it yestrday. If you want dinner go down to the soup kitchen today, they'll feed you till the check comes. Oh, and now there's a big mortgage on the house that hasn't been paid.
'"I know how to win wars. I know how to win wars," McCain told the audience.' Not unless God has 3 trillion dollars to buy you some depleted uranium, you don't.
It works like this: the MIC (military industrial complex) is the puppeteer, Hillary, Obama, McCain and most of congress are the marionette hammers and the rest of the world consists of nails. The puppeteer can always find more marionettes. Sooner or later the puppeteer has to have the curtain pulled back and exposed; then sent home without any dinner so he can burn off the fat calories from his decades-long play time as a fat kid that resembles a pig. He often is seen whining over the 'cut' in budget (i.e. cut in his expected increase, which never actually happens), and threatening the neighborhood if anyone dare cross his need for wasting more money on his 'toys' of destruction. All the while our sons and daughters are sent into his concocted 'enemy territory' where he blows up stuff with his new toys, killing some of them in the process.
First McCain tells Obama he never went to Iraq. So now Obama is going to Iraq. Today McCain asks why is he going to Iraq?
The real question is: why is Obama meeting every McCain requirement in the race? Does he want to keep bouncing from accusation to accusation to please him? Give it up.
And for McCain knowing how to "win the war", he should have given his plan six years ago to the generals over there. It would have been a big help, I'm sure. Not!
Would it be impolitic to suggest throwing McCain from a helicopter?
Since he likes to drop things/bombs on people, he should start with his own sacred carcass.
But I forget how much more is own murdering hide is worth than the brown-skinned people he likes to fire-bomb.
For years after viet-nam this hero was calling those women and children he had killed, who spared his miserable life, 'gooks.' A true sadist. Who left his wife when whe was badly hurt in a car wreck.
NotoConflagrations.
Which one these two War Party candidates can more efficientlu enlarge and fling their penis? The flaccid one who says "I know how to win a war", or the whipper snapper who says "We can win in Afghanistan"? Someone above said, experience counts? You mean John McCain's experience of bombing civilians from 50,000 up? Or Obama's experience of, well, actually, not much. As for re-instituting the draft, that isn't going to happen. First off, the rich ruling elite and their progeny rarely are dumb enough to fight for the Capitalists' interest. That is reserved for those that can't find jobs, or the way out of economic straights. Secondly, the public who is 70% opposed to the war won't stand for it. Thirdly, those invested in "contractors", i.e., mercenaries, have too much profit to make shooting people and places up. Look here folks, since the end of WWII the United States has bombed 21 nations. Were there 21 nations that threatened us, or is there something else going on? McCain or Obama, it doesn't matter. Either way you get Bush's 3rd term as both these candidates are mere marionettes pressed into performance by their masters.
How is it that not a single American dares to point out to this ridiculous pair of corporate-approved candidates that The United States of America is NOT in a state of war - officially, Constitutionally or otherwise - with any country on Earth?
Other than Paul, Nader or McKinney that is...
Will someone please ask BO and JM flat-out what f**king "war" they're f**king talking about?
Oh, and enough with the f**king "czars" already...
An updated metaphor: the MIC core consists of a group of mean-spirited empty-hearted control-freak kids that think the world is their MMORPG computer game they can control and destroy at will with fun special effects (possibly being stupid about consequences; though some must be down-right evil-minded - I'll never say anyone is really pure evil but...) And then the clueless of the world go right along with their agenda and even tout their philosophy and world paradigm - mostly unconsciously. As in "free market" (anything but 'free' with huge monopolistic entities eating up everything they can, and controlling congress). We've got to pull the plug on this game. Thoughts and perception count, as well as action.
Take your pick: more militarism, brutality and destruction in Iraq with McCain; or in Afghanistan and, as a result, Pakistan, with Obama. More money fed to the arms manufacturers, more hatred and terrorism directed towards us as a result of US military atrocities, further destruction of any hope that international law can contain the Superpower's will to conquer, further erosion of public services that Americans need, including education, healthcare, and infrastructure. More carbon emissions and more global disruption (climate change). More military aid to vicious regimes like Israel and Colombia, as well as diplomatic support. Maintainence of the status quo with regard to military bases. More young Americas recruited to join the "armed services" to fight for the antithesis of freedom and democracy. More, if covert, subversion of democracy in places like Venezuela, and Latin America more generally. Further inequality at home and abroad. You call this Democracy? You call these Choices? Only a democratic revolution can save the US from itself.
How can the Washington Post print this with a straight face?
Doesn't anybody there have to giggle at the words, "I know how to win wars?"
But then no one there ever laughed at Bush's calling himself 'The War President.'
"And we must empower the new civilian government of Pakistan to defeat radicalism with greater support for development, health, and education."
McKane wants to help Pakistanis first and Americans last. But that's classic rightwingmanship to help keep the authoritarian followers distracted from their own predicament.
a genuine question:
what is the definition of 'winning' in this case?
also, what do they mean by 'progress?' I'm not being sarcastic as much as I'd really like to know how they define that. in my opinion, killing Iraqi civilians isn't progress. but I'm confused as to whether that's decreased or not, as well as other things..
The USSR drove itself into the ground trying to win a war in Afghanistan. That was how they lost super power status. Remember? The Bush administration has put us trillions more in national debt with no end in sight over Iraq, another nation with one of the oldest fertile crecent civilizations in the world rife with conquests. Remember the long hard slog of the British in India and what is now Pakistan? Recall the fate of the Charge of the Light Brigade? Those six hundred were attacking those intrepid mountain fighters who would not be beaten who were some of the proud, undefeated ancestors of the same people McCain wants to take on. The Taliban is made up mostly of the now-grown orphan boys of the last Afghan-USSR war who were schooled by religious extremists from Saudi Arabia. I'm not saying that we shouldn't do all in our power to stop further terrorist attacks. But it would seem that out and out warfare as the sole solution to stopping recruitment of more terrorists is totally counterproductive. Warfare always makes the enemy list expand, not lessen. When you fight and occupy other people's nations there will never be a war won. Not in Iraq, not in Afghanistan or any place else unless you do away with the population. Mass crucifixions, Masada and the Diaspora was the Romans' final solution to the occupation of Israel. Bush/Cheney have so badly mucked this up that I don't know if there is a solution. The money continues to be borrowed and tossed down a bottomless pit. Our grandchildren will be paying it off with interest. It is presently increasing by $1.69 billion per day. They've burned most of the bridges. McCain wants to burn the rest of them. How did any of us ever think that this man is intelligent?
It actually is rather difficult to know whether to feel disgust, sadness, wonder or shame when realizing these guys were voted the best we have for Presidential candidates of the two major parties. So, I guess the best option is to feel shamed, disgusted, sad and wonderment all at the same time.
Shit, when reaidng articles like this, I just want so give it up and go fishing.
"American elections seem to be about who can sling the most bull the fastest. Fire the starting gun, the first to 1000 whopping lies is the next Pres."
You only need a minimum of 935. That's how many George Wanker Bush told to begin Iraq.
"Shit, when reading articles like this, I just want so give it up and go fishing."
Do it, man. Go fishing, by all means. I'm going to go get loaded.
How to 'win' in the Middle East?
This is like debating the best way to mug and rape Mother Teresa. It's a pointless crime.
McCain is going through male menapause and would likely much rather be riding around on a Harley and chasing young gals before his mind goes totally blank. And the scary thing is, he may be our next president. That is frightening after eight disasterous years of Bush-ism.
The very real implied insult uttered by McCain to the people of US and the world, as well as Barack Obama, is that only special politicians like McCain have special knowledge of Afghanistan. Years of studying history, reading of current affairs through newspapers, magazines, television, books , and years of sifting truth from lies, analyzing the long term behavior of the US and other peoples and their effects, and having access to people with knowledge of the same, does not qualify anybody in McCains mind to make judgments about war strategy and morality.
The related point McCain makes is that apparently the media are not reporting things as they really are in Afghanistan. Therefore the US people are being lied to and have been lied to from day one. Only politicians which special privileges are allowed to visit Afghanistan to find the real facts. And then supposedly they can spin reality in order to avoid the voters learning the real facts. So McCain represents a cult of a secret military war machine which will never let on what it is really all about. Only McCain can know how to be tough and convince people to partake in the crime of destroying a nation in order to save it, for his secret purposes.
I would ask the two senators how much we are paying blackwater or other thugs in iraq and I bet they couldn't tell you. And also I bet they couldn't tell you how many thugs are in iraq killing innocent people....
This guy is more frightening than Bush / Cheney.....how in the hell does he get off saying he knows how to win wars? He was in a prison camp for his tenure as a wartime military soldier, then lied about his accomplishment's and offer for the top position, and he is dying to have a war with his name on it. He has personal, unfinished business with his heroic father and granddad, so he'll make up for it by 'a false win'.
Yes, a false win, as in Iraq being his baby now since the insurgence and he thinks he made it happen, so he claims victory when the Repub's have conveniently turned the volume off on casualties or government reconciliation, as was the reason for the insurgence. Does he think we're all stupid? He does, his wife does, the party does. No victory in Iraq, just a media switch turned off, general election and economy on front burner.
So, this man scare's me. He is too eager for war with yet another country. America, do not be so stupid to continue with the bloodshed of the young men and women in military, for his glory forum. He is a nut job.
How and why is a guy a hero for flying around in a jet against an enemy that has no air force-it's not like he has to show his skill in a dog fight. So he's flying around strafing or dropping napalm on women and kids-no military targets like tanks or artillery positions. To me he would have been a hero if he had went to his CO and said I conscientously object.
To end the violence,
we must end the plunder.
two nations.
"I know how to win wars" says the pathetic old fool, John MCaveman.
-- Daft as a bog brush!
He doesn't.
Nor does this self-aggrandising old fanatic know how to win *PEACE* ~ (-which is a thousand times more crucial to the human race than all that troglodyte mouthing-off about yet more warfare.)
Maybe these decomposing politicians aren't actually members of the human race? -could that explain why they continue to lust after war in place of PEACE?
"... If I'm elected President, I will turn around the war in Afghanistan, just as we have turned around the war in Iraq, with a comprehensive strategy for victory, I know how to do that."
"... I also know how to turn water into wine, lead into gold, and I can walk on water and then fly through the air at 1,000mph wearing lady's underpants on the outside of my grey woolly trousers...."
"... But understand this: when I am commander in chief, there will be nowhere the terrorists can run, and nowhere they can hide... Except maybe in the foetid space between my ears, - there's loadsa room in there since my last mouldering brain cell was surgically removed!"
_____________________
A quote from someone much wiser than these decrepit oafs: "You can no more win a war than you can win an earthquake."
What is he basing this gem of a conclusion on?
My idea for winning wars is to only fight when you have to and use drafted soldiers who want to win and go back home. If therw is resistance to the draft maybe you should not fight the war.
McBush sounds like a brainwashed Idiot. During my time in the service, we were implicitly warned about being
brainwashed by the enemy. McBush has been brainwashed by
the Military and he never resumed his civilian capacity.
The German people claimed they did not know or were afraid to speak up! What is McCain's excuse?
Where did McCain learn how to win wars? I heard he sat most of the last one out, hero or not.
Secondly, has he had his strait jacket measurement taken yet?
I am also hurt by McCain. He called me "his friend," and then I learned he has called everyone in the world his friend except Obama.
What a godawful mess we are in......
STARK RAVING MAD said, "because he gets a pass in the media who absolutely will never mess with his "war-hero" narrative>" This is precisely what happens in a nation where militarism is championed above far saner policies, or, (say it with me, won't y'all) MARS RULES!
UNCOMMON DREAMS: Exactly! Isn't it time a leader (like Kucinich) spoke about MAKING peace, or winning the peace? Now particularly with the costs of war so staggering in blood, treasure and ecosystems (ultimately essential to sustaining human lives).
