Haunted by Iraq War Demons
US Soldier Who Was Subject of Iconic Photo Dies After Struggling With Mental Illness
MELVILLE, N.Y. - The March 2003 image became one of the most iconic of the U.S. invasion of Iraq: that of a bespectacled American soldier carrying an Iraqi child to safety. The photograph of army Private Joseph Dwyer was used by news outlets around the world.
After being lionized by many as the human face of the U.S. effort to rebuild a troubled Iraq, Dwyer brought the battlefield home with him, often grappling violently with delusions that he was being hunted by Iraqi killers.
His internal terror got so bad that in 2005, the Long Island native shot up his El Paso, Tex., apartment and held police at bay for three hours with a 9-mm handgun, believing Iraqis were trying to get in.
On June 28, police in Pinehurst, N.C., who responded to Dwyer's home, said the 31-year-old collapsed and died after abusing a computer cleaner aerosol. Dwyer had moved to North Carolina after living in Texas.
Dwyer, who joined the army two days after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and who was assigned to a unit of the 3rd Infantry Division that one officer called "the tip of the tip of the spear" in the first days of the U.S. invasion, had since then battled depression, sleeplessness and other anxieties that military doctors eventually attributed to post-traumatic stress disorder.
The war that made him a hero at 26 haunted him to the last moments of his life.
"He loved the picture, don't get me wrong, but he just couldn't get over the war," his mother, Maureen Dwyer, said by telephone from her home in Sunset Beach, N.C. "He wasn't Joseph any more. Joseph never came home."
Dwyer's parents said they tried to get help for their son, appealing to army and Veterans Affairs officials. Although he was treated off and on in VA facilities, he was never able to shake his anxieties.
An April report by the Rand Corp. said serious gaps in treatment exist for the one in five U.S. soldiers who exhibit symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder or depression following service in Iraq or Afghanistan. Half of those who experience the disorder sought help in the past year, the report said, and those who did often got "minimally adequate treatment."
"He went away to in-patient treatments. None of it worked," said his father, Patrick Dennis Dwyer. "And the problem is there are not adequate resources for post-traumatic stress syndrome."
After a PTSD program in Durham, N.C., turned Dwyer away because of a lack of space, Maureen Dwyer said her son received in-patient care for six months at the Northport Veterans Affairs Medical Center, beginning last August. After doctors discharged him in March, she said, his anxieties returned with such intensity that Dwyer's wife, Matina, 30, took their daughter Meagan, 2, and moved out five days later.
Maureen Dwyer said her son married a month before his deployment. She said her son began experiencing serious depression soon after his vehicle in Iraq was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade in 2003. She said his problems continued after his deployment ended and he returned to an army facility in Texas.
The El Paso shooting was only one of several incidents there, according to interviews. He had a number of driving accidents when, he later told his family, he swerved to avoid imagined roadside bombs; he once crashed over a curb after imagining that a stopped car contained Iraqi assassins. After a July 2007 motorcycle accident, his parents tried, unsuccessfully, to have him committed to a mental institution.
After his Iraq deployment ended and with increasing urgency, Dwyer's friends urged him to give up his firearms. His parents worried about his practice of pushing furniture against the interior walls of his Texas home, arming himself with knives and sleeping in a closet. He told his family he was suspicious of counselling. He complained that prescribed drugs were ineffective. They say he turned to sniffing Dust-Off computer cleaner to drug himself to sleep. Pinehurst police said abusing that aerosol contributed to his death.
Dwyer's mother said he left the service in March 2006. Unable to hold a job, he lived with his wife and daughter on a Veterans Affairs disability cheque, while going in and out of psychiatric care.
"Talking to him, he knew he was going to die," Maureen Dwyer said.
She agreed to be interviewed despite her grief because she said she hoped to bring attention to the disorder.
"Every second that goes by, there is another soldier just like Joseph," Maureen Dwyer said. "Another family can't go through this. All the politicians talk so great about the soldiers, about patriotism, but mental illness is something they are not putting enough into."

Show AllAnother sad victim of Bush's murder machine. If only some of these broken suicidal soldiers would take a few Republican operatives with them when they go home to Jesus. At least then, their service would not be in vain.

Thank you Mrs. Dwyer for speaking out despite your pain. So sorry for the wife and child too.
Our country has never been invaded and our children have never had to fear bombs whining down in the night or foreign soldiers kicking in their doors and shouting in a language they don't understand. I don't think our children know what they are getting into when they volunteer for the army.
Scary scenario, jcrumb.
Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and their neocon buddies are all responsible for this human catastrophe involving millions of Americans and Iraqis--the soldiers, their families and friends, the Iraqis killed and injured, and those two million plus Iraqis who have had to flee the country. If Bush and Cheney are not impeached then they must be hounded forever with law suits, so that they never enjoy a day's peace for the rest of their miserable lives. Rumsfeld is beneath contempt and should never be able to appear in public without being subjected to harrassment. We need public tribunals similar to the war crimes trials in the Hague to deal with these monsters.
Doesn't everyone realize the frequency of Suicide by PTSD yet? Man, this is the norm not the exception.

The crimes committed by the United States in Vietnam and now Iraq, are among the chief causes of the decline and eventual downfall of the United States. An intellectual and moral idiot like George Wanker Bush has no conception about this kind of unavoidable payback that history visits upon villainous nations. Neither do the vast majority of Americans. But it is as certain as death itself.
CBS News did an investigation - asking all 50 states for their suicide data, based on death records, for veterans and non-veterans, dating back to 1995. Forty-five states sent what turned out to be a mountain of information.
And what it revealed was stunning.
In 2005, for example, in just those 45 states, there were at least 6,256 suicides among those who served in the armed forces. That's 120 each and every week, in just one year.
thats 17 per day.

maybe dwyer became possessed of a rudimentary moral conscience and realized the horror, death and chaos he helped create and the realization was just too much for him. most gi's will never have a moral conscience. most will rationalise their murderous behavior and so it goes. but the iraqis ain't gonna' fergit. they will fight to expell the crusaders to the last man woman and child is gone.
amerika is dead and has become a third world member now.
... in just those 45 states, there were at least 6,256 suicides among those who served in the armed forces.
This is the real Bush/Cheney legacy - another long black wall covered with the names of the betrayed. It's past time to secede from the Red States.
It's past time to secede from the Red States...
There are no "red state" and "blue states" - just city residents and right-wing suburban, small town and rural residents. (BTW how did the color red get assigned to the conservatives?)
With possibly the exception of Vermont, "blue states" are simply those states with a majority urban population. My home state is considered "blue" but if you were to take just Philadelphia out, it would be as red as Tennessee or Wyoming.
Guess where virtually all the US Army's recruits come from?
I wonder why the little child has a jacket on but no pants or underwear.
lillulu, had you considered the little sweetie was naked when they were attacked and he may have been decent enough to grab what he could find to cover up? Had you considered That? Had you considered this young man has committed Suicide by PTSD, although you may find this a justice done it is sad to want that young man to be X'ed out for want of a way to express hatred towards the Troops as you used to do daily, then eased up for some time now. If you are inthe District go visit the IVAW House, near CodePinks House, who supports all of us, VFP, IVAW, VVAW at all Congressional hearings, talk to Kokesh, Chiroux and they'll tell you how they feel about what they were ordered to do and what is like for them now. Sometimes when nwe don't understand the machinations of every side of many explosive issues we become hateful and indecent in our opinions of things we may not understand.
Some hero. That kid was injured because of what Dwyer and his cohorts did.

Everyone should know by now; there've certainly been plenty of articles published, and even several or more copies at CD. I wonder about the 25% level of PTSD in the Rand Corp.'s report, for I thought to have read higher.

Yes, "are among the chief causes", as opposed to "are the chief causes", for they're definitely major cases, but, overall, much less than what there is for [far] more. And the far more does not consist only of U.S. military forces fighting around the world, for that's included, but the military is not the only way that the U.S., U.K., ... govts and the real ruling elites conduct war on most of the countries and peoples of planet Earth. The military method of war is the last method resorted to, as John Perkins, author of 'Confessions of an Economic Hit Man', explained; including in an interview with Democracy Now!. He may not explicitly refer to these other two methods as 'war', but they [are] 'war', wars of aggression, criminal exploitation and corruption, etcetera.
I wonder how are the other side fairing in all these...those Afghans and Iraqis that had their lives destroyed....
I remembered when Bush was declaring "we are going to war" after 9/11, I thought: hatred of generations are being planted. Now I hope I was a fool when I had that thought
Turce, I don't know what you're talking about, saying I want the soldier dead and all. I haven't "expressed hatred towards the troops daily," either. Please don't lie about me. I feel bad for the troops that many of them are poor and couldn't afford to go to Yale and Harvard like George Bush, and so they joined the military for a job. That's what my neighbor did, and I was sorry to see him go.
However, if I were a guy I would't join the military and kill civilians and children just so the war profiteers could become even richer. It seems they are enabling the war criminals, but I guess they didn't have the choices that people born with a silver spoon in their mouths have, e.g. George Bush. I have no hatred for the troops. You assume too much.
As far as the child being naked, I guess it brings back memories of a picture of the naked young girl of about 11 running and crying in Vietnam. I don't know why my question would offend you. If it were me, that would be the first area I'd cover up, but I was raised to be modest even if it's a child. People are different. What can I say. It's distressing to see children suffering in wars; it's bad enough to know defenseless grown-ups are being killed and crippled.
Read Chris Hedges new book "Collateral Damage", but not before going to sleep. The situation that the troops on the ground are forced to deal with has turned many into wanton killing machines. Parents are shot right in front of frightened, crying, children. One officer got fed up with a barking dog during a routine questioning and shot it's jaw off. The family, children and all, sobbed as the jaw less dog ran around in pain, bleeding and screeching.
The nightmares that these soldiers are creating, and will eventually have to endure, are Americas nightmares. Cruelty, callousness, arrogance, death, torture, who is accountable? The world watches as American citizens turn a blind eye to the murder and maiming done in their name.

Mr. Corbeil, I didn't read the articles you're refering to. I am speaking to the fact that as a Veteran for Peace, I am around IVAW alot, and these men and women are so ill it is indeed tragic. I know you've never served a day in your life. These are grunts, non-coms who are ordered and psychologicaly abused from jump. Stop-loss'ed, redeployments, improper VA care, I am a disabled Vet I know. So stop with the woe is me and all Troops of the US from Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan are Murderers. Save it, I could give a shit what you say.
Lillulu and Turce,
Regarding the child's lack of clothes (why don't we know the boy's name), notice that Private Dwyer carries the child's Palestinian kaffikah (sp?) headscarf in his hand. Taking off the child's headscarf was perhaps the suggestion of the embedded photographer who knew this would upset a good patriotic photo opportunity - don't want no ragheads, let alone one with Palestinian sympathies spoiling the photo.
On another matter, the only veteran I knew with PTSD, was a jovial and charming man who, in his older age, would burst into tears. He suffered, not because of what the Japs did to him but, because of what he did to Japs in Borneo. It was something he could never tell his family. I suspect this long asymmetric conflict in Iraq, with no obvious meaning, purpose, or 'victory' will cause much more PTSD in the perpetrators of horror.
How sad is it that this story comes to us from Canada (in fairness, kudos to CBS for their thorough investigation -- especially interesting was the link on "how we got the numbers".) Thanks for the link, GottaGetOffTheGrid.
JUST TO PUT MR. GEORGE BUSH IN PERSPECTIVE:
'A moment I've been dreading. George brought his n'er-do-well son around this morning and asked me to find the kid a job. Not the political one who lives in Florida; the one who hangs around here all the time looking shiftless. This so-called kid is already almost 40 and has never had a real job. Maybe I'll call Kinsley over at The New Republic and see if they'll hire him as a contributing editor or something. That looks like easy work.'

AND YET YOU CONTINUE TO KISS THIS LITTLE DERANGED FUCKER'S ASS, AND WILL
INSIST ON CALLING HIM "HONORABLE".
DANCE ON AMERICA. . .. The "Piper" can wait to be paid.
Nobody cares. These stories are so commonplace now its just another "thing" in the bumbling bully juggernaut that has become the land of the brave and home of the free. Nobody cares. Just another dead ptsd victim of a soldier. Nobody cares. Now, what's good on TV tonight.

And it will all blow back onto us eventually. And we will be stunned when it happens.
markbinoz, yep, what you've done to others, you've automatically done to yourself. A normal person with a functioning conscience won't be allowed peace of mind if he or she has committed atrocities. Does that mean I hate the troops? No. It's just a rule in the game of life.
Pictured above: Private Joseph Dwyer: = An ordinary man, doing a good thing (off his own bat), in one small moment of his life, ~in between doing wholly bad and dishonourable things on behalf of his VERY BAD 'government'.
~Maybe there's a little hope to be found in that moment?
Private J. Dwyer was conned (badly) by those who he thought knew better than him: Just a meagre pawn, in a pornographic parade of evil, ~ courtesy of a Devil's Spawn government.
Dwyer's soul might well have be saved by his actions that day, even if the rest of his life (this time around) got waaaaaaay too screwed up to carry on so very much longer after that 'photo op' day was done.
Our duty is to tie a metaphorical alarm clock to America to help the millions still asleep to wake up before further chickens (read: *calamities*) come home to roost.
Some here @ C-D speak of the effect upon America via her insane wars. But... the ripples spread far wider than just the USA, -- they travel on out to the very corners of this planet, polluting all with the obscenity of totally unnecessary warfare, waged upon sovereign nations, by 'scum-of-the-earth' types like Bush/Blair/Berlusconi (and the rest).
Though no bible-basher, I'm aware of the biblical predictions wherein the useful 'wheat' sort of people [aka: compassionate, peace-loving folk] get separated off from the barbarian war-loving 'chaff' types.
"Bring it on!" –to coin a phrase from the imbecile POTUS servant of Diablo.
Speaking of spiritual matters, -it's nice to know we have 'Them Upstairs' on our side!
Fight on!
