Cheney Reportedly Wanted Cuts In Climate Testimony
WASHINGTON - Vice President Dick Cheney's office pushed for major deletions in congressional testimony on the public health consequences of climate change, fearing the presentation by a leading health official might make it harder to avoid regulating greenhouse gases, a former EPA officials maintains.
When six pages were cut from testimony on climate change and public health by the head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last October, the White House insisted the changes were made because of reservations raised by White House advisers about the accuracy of the science.
But Jason K. Burnett, until last month the senior adviser on climate change to Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Stephen Johnson, says that Cheney's office was deeply involved in getting nearly half of the CDC's original draft testimony removed.
"The Council on Environmental Quality and the office of the vice president were seeking deletions to the CDC testimony (concerning) ... any discussions of the human health consequences of climate change," Burnett has told the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee.
The three-page letter, a response to an inquiry by Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., the panel's chairwoman, was obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press. Boxer planned a news conference later in the day.
Burnett, 31, a lifelong Democrat who resigned his post last month as associate deputy EPA administrator because of disagreements over the agency's response to climate change, describes deep political concerns at the White House, including in Cheney's office, about linking climate change directly to public health or damage to the environment.
Scientists believe manmade pollution is warming the earth and if the process is not reversed it will cause significant climate changes that pose broad public health problems from increases in disease to more injuries from severe weather.
Senate and House committees have been trying for months to get e-mail exchanges and other documents to determine the extent of political influence on government scientists, but have been rebuffed.
The letter by Burnett for the first time suggests that Cheney's office was deeply involved in downplaying the impacts of climate change as related to public health and welfare, Senate investigators believe.
Cheney's office also objected last January over congressional testimony by Administrator Johnson that "greenhouse gas emissions harm the environment."
An official in Cheney's office "called to tell me that his office wanted the language changed" with references to climate change harming the environment deleted, Burnett said. Nevertheless, the phrase was left in Johnson's testimony.
Cheney's office and the White House Council on Environmental Quality worried that if key health officials provided detailed testimony about global warming's consequences on public health or the environment, it could make it more difficult to avoid regulating carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, Burnett believes.
The EPA currently is examining whether carbon dioxide, a leading greenhouse gas, poses a danger to public health and welfare. The Supreme Court has said if it does, it must be regulated under the Clean Air Act.
Nowhere were these White House concerns more apparent than when CDC Director Julie Gerberding, the head of the government's premier public health watchdog, testified about climate change and public health before Boxer's committee last October. The White House deleted six of the original 14 pages of Gerberding's testimony, including a list of likely public health impacts of global warming.
The White House, at the urging of Cheney's office, "requested that I work with CDC to remove from the testimony any discussion of the human health consequences of climate change," wrote Burnett.
"CEQ contacted me to argue that I could best keep options open for the (EPA) administrator (on regulating carbon dioxide) if I would convince CDC to delete particular sections of their testimony," Burnett said in the letter to Boxer.
But he said he refused to press CDC on the deletions because he believed the CDC's draft testimony was "fundamentally accurate."
Burnett, in a telephone interview, said he opposed making the extensive deletions because "it was the right thing to do." He declined to elaborate about White House involvement beyond his July 6 letter to Boxer.
As a Democrat, Burnett, seems to have been an odd choice as a senior policy adviser and key liaison with the White House in Bush administration's EPA.
Over the last eight years, he has contributed nearly $125,000 to various Democratic politicians, starting with Al Gore's 2000 presidential campaign, according to the Center for Responsive Government. He supports Democrat Barack Obama for president.
Burnett caught the attention of Bush administration insiders as a researcher at the Center for Regulatory Study, a joint effort by the American Enterprise Institute and the Brookings Institution, where he co-authored a number of reports on regulation including one criticizing a ban on using cell phones while driving and another criticizing the EPA regulation of arsenic as too expensive with limited benefits.

"There's a jail cell waiting for Dick Cheney."
It's a nice dream, isn't it? In my dream, the cell is about 4' x 8' and 6' deep.
truthmonger; Cheney "obviously has something on most of the powerful folks in congress"
BULLSEYE! Yes; Blackmailed. Likely Pelosi and three or four few others.*
"most" would be unwieldy and uneccessary.
ANYBODY think Cheney either could or would not do this?
amitola; for sure; a photograph delivered of the subject when he/she thought they had total privacy with explicit voting directions and a death threat to one's family written on the back of another photo of Wellstone's plane's wreckage.; most people are 'owned' at that point.
* With a resultant paralyzed congress and the the Democrats led by their blackmailed noses. Just 2-4 would do it. Has done it.
RSJ; You out there?
"The White House, at the urging of Cheney's office, "requested that I work with CDC to remove from the testimony any discussion of the human health consequences of climate change," wrote Burnett."
This proves that Cheney/Bush et al are not actually HUMAN!
Because any creature that is human is certainly concerned about how any climate change may affect the health of the species. I saw Gerberding on CNN yesterday, trying mightily to convince the reporter that what she said that Cheney had excluded was really 'not important at all.'
I just wonder if sometimes maybe the health of these folks who are actually trying to serve the pulic through their work in government agencies isn't being threatened by administration goons.
We can't wait until next January to get rid of these criminals.
IMPEACH!!!!!!
While we still have a shred of the world intact!
bush and cheney are taking us closer every day to the virtual point of no return, in terms of our planet. They are both in need of serious psychological assistance. cheney just wants control of the world's oil; bush thinks he can bring on the end of days. Both have different reasons but both will bring about the same result. It's scary to think what these two are capable of in the next few months.
Yes, there should be enough info just in this story to impeach cheney but he obviously has something on most of the powerful folks in Congress. Why else?
Words are not adequate. Dick Cheney , the hired hand of Haliburton, has personally benefited , as Haliburton has, from the deaths, torture and destruction in Iraq that he has ordered. His crimes are amount the worst war crimes that I know of done by a still living human being. Only the complicity of his congressional confederates and corporate sponsors, and the fact he is currently the center of the cult US religion of power worship stops him from being arrested forthwith.
His moral complicity is that he chose to be supported and backed for his role in a systematic and cold blooded series of crimes. He chose to be the tool of evil. As part of his servitude to bring about the creation of climate hell on earth, his mission statement from the Carbon Cronies includes halting any efforts to start effective prevention. This man wants runaway climate change to bring about the extinction of all humanity, if not the entire Gaian System. He hates other living beings so much he would bring it all to a very premature end.
When a killer goes beyond deep rage, usually a male, and kills his own children, wife and any innocents near by, prior to eventual self immolation, it is regretted after the fact that warning signs were unheeded, that police did not intervene earlier when asked to, or should have given their knowledge of likely consequences, and escalation of conflict leads to tragedy.
So on this level of the biggest and richest system of human co-ordination of destruction on our only planet, the warning signs are so many, they are of a system which entire parts of nations and corporations of sick individuals are bent on destruction that leads ultimately to destruction of Gaia, leading to unavoidable self destruction. Identify all individuals concerned, and take them out of public office, and place them in care where with proper therapeutic environments and work, they will be cured of their power induced mental afflictions, and prevented from doing great harm to themselves and others. When tragedy arrives it is far too late.
Impeach, arrest, prosecute, investigate. It is a lot better than war and runaway climate change.
There's a jail cell waiting for Dick Cheney.
This is just unconscionable, criminal doesn't even begin to describe it. These people cannot get out of power soon enough, and they will continue doing damage until the day they're gone, and who knows what else they'll pull off between now and then. What especially bugs me about this is that people still continue to deny anthropogenic climate change while people like Cheney are going out of their way to suppress scientific data which corroborates it. People are worried about some global warming conspiracy well HERE'S YOUR GLOBAL WARMING CONSPIRACY RIGHT HERE
Relax Sandy, it was just a joke! A little satire about the sheeple. I'm actually on your side, I think!

I'm outraged - yawn…
Shouldn't there be an investigation … or something … zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Yes and your apathy is a big part of America's problem. Americans are too busy watching reality TV to care about the future of our country. And while you are stuffing your face China owns most of georgie's debt, the housing market, the economy, the shrinking dollar, the iraq invasion, has our country in the toilet.
There is no good reason that slime like dickie should be taking up space in our world. Maybe he will choke on his own vile vomit, that would be to good for a monster like him.
I'm outraged - yawn...
Shouldn't there be an investigation ... or something ... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Hell Hank, they don't even bother to deny the fact that they are crooks. Why would a crook care if everybody knows he is a crook as long as he owns the police, the press, and the military?
Bakunin& Mikero,
I started trying to get people from this site about a month ago to begin the conversation about what REALLY needs to happen or what we could do to implement change outside of the site via email. I have about 20 email addresses.
I have sent out a long missive I compiled ( one of many) and have hardly heard a peep out of most of them which says they either didn't read it or didn't like the ideas. A few responded but not all. I mentioned things like street theater (the IVAW tried it and it was very effective) and using paint or targeting banks etc etc.
If you feel like adding your names to the list please feel free to write me and I will send out my missive. I am not about to give up this fight. I am still trying to get something more going on a local level too. I have only asked for email addresses but I am wondering whether or not my written dialogue is being intercepted? Nothing would surprise me. One person sent their phone number and I called and we had a wonderful exchange. This person was just as concerned about the state of affairs and as possessed as I was in trying to figure out what else to do.
As for the whole climate deal I also wrote long letter to my friends and family last week and sent it out the night before concerning what we face and what needs to happen. I would be happy to share that as well. I also ended up sending it into the local paper( the Palm Beach Post)in case they could use any part of it.
Feel free to contact me by email. Here is my address civilsocietyATbellsouth.net. The CD machine will not let me post it correctly so that is why I as AT.
I want to see if we can start to try and connect some of us in different regions/cities/areas in this country and all of us try to do the same action in an area on the same day. Unless I get more than 20 email adresses it ain't going to be very provocative.
By the way, is there anyone on CD that is in my area (West Palm Beach)? I'd love to meet up and try to get something a little more visible happening.
No amnesty!
Pursue the Bush administration beyond January 20 until they are brought to justice.
FREE AMERICA
Direct Democracy
Maybe if gas hits 6.50 a gallon by xmas, and our economy collapses will the American public form a lynch mob.
In the mean time let me use the words of a traitor and new age carpetbagger.A man who's name defines murderous greed, and evil.
CHENEY " SO "
What's good for CheneyOilCo is good for America... um, well okay... in this case CheneyOilCo is America
Burnett; Democrat
Boxer; Democrat
Bush; Republican
Cheney; Republican,
In this year '08, anyone see a lesser of two evils here?
Anyone seriously believe this would have happened under an Al Gore administration?
Of course not. He'd have been a far and away 'lesser evil' than the Republican Cabal that has raped us all these past eight years.
Signed.....well, a relativist.
Peace; Piece by Piece.
Bakunin, your comment: "...The republic teeters on the edge of full-blown tyranny, and nobody makes a peep except us dissidents who are tolerated only because our rulers know that we are ineffectual, talking only to each other, and not influencing the masses at all. What a sad state of affairs!"
So exactly right! We are "talking only to each other..." Well, how can we use these "progessive" discussion sites as an organizing tool to foment mass organization and real change? Talking to each other is good so long as it is to the end of building our ranks and building a movement. A movement of commenters, we'll call it. May I propose that we begin here and now to engage in an ongoing conversation, keeping as a focus, to know who we are and to stick together. We can meet surreptiosly and otherwise at key conversations throughout the internet. Are you and anyone else interested in joining this serious literary movemet for serious change????
Nothing different from New Orleans - Let the disasters happen- profit from it by pretending to do something to solve the disaster related problems - all the while having great fun screwing the victims and sneering at them because they are too stupid to get rid of this crowd of victimizers
Remember when Richard Nixon said, "I am not a crook?" Guess what? George W. Bush and Richard Cheney are crooks!
The headline says Cheney WANTED cuts, but the text of the article says he GOT them.
Six out of 14 pages - that's 43% of the total testimony - were cut out because Big Dick didn't want the testimony to mention the effects on human health? Where can we get those deleted pages? We know that almost half of what the CDC wanted to tell us was censored for political reasons; wouldn't it be a good thing to find out what the deleted testimony actually said?
What an evil, evil person...and surrounded by other evil persons. Thank goodness for one or two who resist the lure of power and speak the truth!
The article states that the testimony was dropped on the advise of White House advisors.
The only White House advisor that Bush listened to was a science fiction writer who agreed with Bush's viewpoint. The operative word here is "fiction", forget the "science" part.
buhun. very observant, very funny.
So?
One more bit of evidence (as if any more were needed) that Cheney should be impeached, but congress refuses to do its constitutional duty. The republic teeters on the edge of full-blown tyranny, and nobody makes a peep except us dissidents who are tolerated only because our rulers know that we are ineffectual, talking only to each other, and not influencing the masses at all. What a sad state of affairs!
And now for your up-to-date methane forecast.
About 2/3 of the arctic ocean is full of leads between the ice. The ice has long since pulled away from the Yukon shore, subjecting it to wave action. I'll take a guess that 80% of the arctic ice cap will be gone in two months.
The Boston Globe carried a letter today about Cheney who attended a citizens swearing in ceremony at the U.S.S. Constitution.
"ON DICK Cheney visiting the Charlestown Navy Yard: It was great to see that after seven years, the vice president finally looked at the Constitution.
BILL CALLAHAN, North Andover"
It doesn't fit the topic, but it is too great not to share
a reduction in the use of oil = a reduction in the profits enjoyed by our traitors in the white house.
heckuvajob.
Wouldn't it be nice to see Dick Cheney in an orange jumpsuit? I think he'd look fantastic in it!
