New War Brewing: US, Israel Take Dangerous Steps
GENEVA - The U.S., Israel and Iran are playing a very dangerous game of chicken that soon could result in a new Mideast war.
U.S. intelligence has concluded that Iran is not working on nuclear weapons. But the Bush administration and Israel, recently joined by France, are issuing increasingly loud threats of military action to frighten Iran into halting its nuclear enrichment program.
Iran insists its nuclear program is entirely for civilian use. Tehran is alternating between conciliatory statements and threats to retaliate against any attack by inflicting economic chaos on the global economy. Europe fears the economic damage a war against Iran would bring far more than Iran's nuclear program.
Senior Israeli officials are openly threatening to attack Iran's nuclear installations before President George W. Bush's term expires. Early, this month Israel staged a large, U.S.-approved exercise using F-15s and F-16s to rehearse an attack over 900 miles - precisely the distance to Iran's nuclear facilities.
The highly regarded American journalist Seymour Hersh just confirmed that the U.S. Congress authorized a $400-million plan to overthrow Iran's government and incite ethnic unrest. This column reported a year ago that U.S. and British special forces were operating in Iran, preparing for a massive air campaign. Israel's destruction of an alleged Syrian reactor last fall was a warning to Iran.
This week a Pentagon official claimed an Israeli attack on Iran was coming before year end.
Other Pentagon and CIA sources say a U.S. attack on Iran is imminent, with or without Israel. The Bush administration is even considering using small tactical nuclear weapons against deeply buried Iranian targets.
Senior American officers Admiral William Fallon and Air Force Chief Michael Mosley recently were fired for opposing war against Iran. According to Israel's media, President Bush even told Israel's Prime Minister Ehud Olmert that he could not trust America's intelligence community and preferred to rely on Israeli intelligence.
AIR BLITZ
Intensifying activity is evident at U.S. bases in Europe and the Gulf, aimed at preparing a massive air blitz that may include repeated attacks on 3,100 targets in Iran. Other sources say Iranian Revolutionary Guard installations will be barraged by cruise missiles.
In Washington, Congress, under intense pressure from the Israel lobby, is about to adopt a resolution calling for a naval blockade of Iran, an overt act of war.
Pro-Israel groups have been airing TV commercials claiming Iran is attacking American troops in Iraq and threatens the U.S.
The Bush administration's last desperate act, its Gotterdammerung, could be war with Iran. UN weapons inspectors concur with U.S. intelligence that there is no proof Iran is working on nuclear arms, but the neocon war party in Washington is determined to loosen a final Parthian shaft by striking Iran.
Israel asserts the right to maintain its Mideast nuclear monopoly by destroying all fissile-producing reactors in the region. Iran vows to retaliate against Israel with its inaccurate Shahab missiles, shut the Strait of Hormuz and mine the Gulf, producing worldwide financial panic, severe fuel shortages, and $400-$500 per barrel oil. Iran likely will attack U.S. forces in Afghanistan, Iraq and Kuwait, and strike Saudi and Kuwaiti oil facilities. Canadians in Afghanistan could also become targets.
GRAVE DAMAGE
The embattled Bush administration's bunker mentality is leading to war that will gravely damage long-term U.S. Mideast interests. A single Iranian missile hit on Israel's reactor would do more damage to the Jewish state than all its previous wars. Besides, Israel cannot destroy Iran's nuclear infrastructure. A U.S. or Israeli attack on Iran will guarantee Tehran decides to build nuclear weapons. Israel and Iran have turned their regional rivalry into a confrontation that threatens all.
Iran's supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, not its bombastic President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, controls that nation's military and insists Iran will not produce nuclear weapons. Israel claims it faces a second holocaust. Iran says Israel's nuclear forces threaten its existence.
The dogs of war are being unleashed.

Russia has sold hundreds of anti-ship cruise missiles to Iran. Russian arms manufacturers make the best anti-ship missiles in the world, and our navy has no defense against them. The Exocet (Argentina sunk a British Frigate with one in the Falklands war), the Sunburn, and the SS-NX-26 Yakhonts make our naval ships in the Persian Gulf sitting ducks.
The Iranian military has those missiles deployed on mobile launchers based in hardened shelters all along the Iranian coast on the east side of the Persian Gulf. This means that they can launch Yakhonts missiles at our ships from different angles. The Yakhonts travels at Mach 2.9 (about 2000 miles and hour) 22 feet above the surface of the sea, making it invisible to radar and other electronic detection. It has the capability of doing violent end maneuvers and crashing straight down into the deck of the targeted ship, or into the conning tower. The Yakhonts becomes visible to a sailor with binoculars or other visual aid about 3 seconds before impact, not enough time to react, especially if missiles have been launched from different angles timed to arrive at target simultaneously.
We could lose 30,000 sailors in a few minutes in the first attacks on U.S. aircraft carriers since the Second World War. This is probably the real reason Secretary of Defense Gates and other U.S. military personnel are unwilling to do the bidding of the right wing Israeli government on this one.
Resistance to war with Iran is much more pronounced in Israel than in the U.S. They need to vote the right wing government out of office.

Stanwix- Plant a garden, learn low-tech survival skills, get to know your neighbors, and learn how to do without. It's coming anyway you slice it, so better to be prepared than a victim.
Well, I guess I'm number 107 or thereabouts. It'll take some stamina for anyone to read this far, but here goes. There's a lot of huffing and puffing going on here, a lot of rhetoric. But could we focus on this: What are we going to DO about it? Besides ventilate, I mean. In fact, you could spare me the ventilating and I wouldn't miss it. Instead could we talk about what might actually make a difference? Some helpful readers have retrieved information on doings in Congress, so we can contact our Senators and Reps. Good start (in fact, I personally spoke with my Rep at a July 4th event and wrote one Senator two weeks ago), but that's probably not all we should be doing to slow the momentum on this thing. Another possibility: Set up a solid, credible display at your local federal building (aka post office) about the costs of war, with a good, well-sourced handout on the prospect of its expansion into Iran. Invite people to sign a petition or provide postcards for them to send to their Reps. I think at this point we need to be communicating with ordinary folks, providing a counter-message, and looking for ways to build broad, coherent opposition. Any other concrete ideas, folks?

There will be no end to this depression, folks.
Any stimulus the economy will be M.I.C. based, just like last time. But the difference will be that when the war finally ends, there will be no good times, no post war economic boom, no resources to fuel said boom, and a round of asymmetric 'tit-for-tat' warfare that will carry on until modern ammunition stocks are depleted. And such a war will leave even more shortages in place than when the war started, and will probably lead to the fracturing and Balkanization of many meta-nations (the US most definitely included).

The Democrats, along with the Republicans of course, don't deserve any votes. As usual, they will do nothing to stop this unprovoked, pre-emptive attack on Iran for war profiteering/oil. "Pre-emptive" war needs to be outlawed internationally. The psychos running the U.S. have illegally attacked and occupied Iraq over lies and then blame it on "faulty intelligence."

The whining is done with a purpose. By respectfully stating that the US political system is completely broken, the intention is to convey that following a path using conventional processes is hopeless, regardless of whether it involves supporting third parties. It appears extremely likely that another great depression is heading our way, and also extremely likely that the fascists in charge will prevent any meaningful change through conventional political means, no matter how great the desire by the people. So it can be helpful to prepare others to begin thinking about what alternatives they may be willing to engage in.
Oh my gosh. All the gloom and doom. Nothing is accomplished by people who sit around, type on a keyboard and wring their hands.
Folks, there are true progressive candidates running for Congress all over this country. They are running against all odds. They are running against Republicans, and Conservative Democrats alike.
Find out who they are. Send some financial support. Help get them elected. If you live in their district. Volunteer. Only when we replace those members of Congress, who no longer represent the people, will we get our government back.
Quit your "bit**ing. Send what money you can. Volunteer what of your time you can.
Nader is not going to save us. Neither is Cynthia McKinney. Neither is Obama, without a more progressive Congress, who along with other progressive citizens, will hold his administration accountable.
Get our your check book. Progressives are waiting for help. Put on your sneakers, and block walk for votes for the progressive candidates in your area.
Do something more than whine.
We can only hope that not even Bush and Dick Vader are that maniacial. And that Congress gets busy and stops that possibility in its tracks.

The first two definitions of treason are questionable. I would argue that US politicians who take money from the Israel Lobby are being disloyal to their country. Israel is no friend of the US. But he does get it right on a few things:
-The real anti-Semites say that America is Israel's puppet, that we are ruled by "ZOG," the "Zionist Occupation Government."
- I have no quarrel with spiritual Zionism. I think that reverence for land, and the respect for life that goes with it, is a good thing - a very good thing.

Nowadays, when Israel and its supportive lobbies are manifestly doing whatever they can to drag us all into a third world war, standing up for Palestine is the least we can do. As things stand, a tiny brave deprived nation is facing totally alone what seems to be the world's greatest enemy of peace: namely Israel. As much as it is heartbreaking to see, this Palestinian battle is our battle. To liberate Palestine is to save humanity.
Would not a blockade work two ways? The world needs Iran's crude oil more than Iran needs refined petroleum. Iran could shut down its oilfields, ration food and fuel, and watch world wide oil prices go ballistic.
At the same time sympathetic Shiites in Iraq might sabotage progress made with Iraq's oil infrastructure.
If Iranian public opinion isn't already overwhelmingly anti-Israel and anti-US, a blockade would make it certain. Lets burn all the bridges and cement hatred for another generation.
Bush won't be happy until he has murdered millions of people, animals and the environment. And the Jewish lobby be dammned. And the Congress be damned for allowing this pig to continue his destruction of life, liberty and freedom.

When you find out how to recover our government from serfdom to the government of Israel, please let me know. Israel is sometimes referred to as the "51st State". It is really inaccurate to refer to a master state as a vassal state--Israel calls the shots, and the USA dances to their tune. We even pay, via diverted foreign aid, for the humiliation of being a vassal to Israel. There needs to be legal action to end the treason that constitutes the current hold of Israel on US politics.
Such single minded obsession in the leaders and armies of Israel. What could change the collision course after so many years of mind conditioning? Israel is the battering ram for the US in the middle east. The US is the team of pile drivers that are ramming against the doors. Inside are the starving, over-crowded, besieged luckless inhabitants with an ancient culture. The end result could be massacre, carnage and rape on a continental scale. The biggest irony is that our Congress is being bought by our own money. We send $billions every year to Israel; should it surprise anybody that some of it comes right back to our politicians in the form of bribes^H^H^H^H^H^Hcampaign contributions?
The Israelis want us to attack Iran for obvious reasons: they want their enemies in the Middle East destroyed, and they can't do it by themselves. So their aim with all that lobbying is to sucker us into doing it for them. Iraq was a good start, from their point of view, and an invasion of Iran would be even better. Whether these wars are good for us is completely irrelevant in Israel's calculations.
If we are ruined by our blunders in the Middle East, it will be largely because of our unstinting generosity to Israel: the Israelis show their gratitude for our charity by using it to exploit us.
If this is true then I'd be perfectly happy to see the Israelis thrown into the sea so they can wander the earth for another few thousand years before they get a chance to fuck over anyone else like they're fucking over the United States (with the complicity of idiot American politicians) and the Middle East.

Bush/Cheney want to make sure that the military draft will have to be re-instated before they go out of office. And make no mistake, there will be plenty of loopholes that allow rich kids to get out of it or be deferred because of attending college. And because exorbitant tuition tends to prohibit many children from middle and lower income families from attending college now, we know who is gonna be the cannon fodder.
And Rome lost it's empire because it started relying on mercenary forces, which turned on it.

umlaut - the repugs are very busy spreading the word that the rising cost of gas is the dems fault. This is going to be the biggest part of this phase of the election - to make sure Obama doesn't get elected - because the high price of gas now tops all the rest. I think aipac is using the election to get a strategic target taken out.
