US Officials Condoned Hunt-Kurd Oil Deal-Documents
U.S. officials condoned Hunt Oil Co efforts to obtain an exploration deal with Iraq's Kurdish regional government, contrary to public statements discouraging it, according to documents cited by a congressional committee.
When the agreement was announced in September, it was criticized as undermining efforts to strengthen Iraq central government, which still had no national oil revenue-sharing law.
Bush administration officials expressed public concern and denied any knowledge of the contract.
On Wednesday, U.S. Rep. Henry Waxman released e-mails and letters obtained by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee that appeared to show the opposite.
"Contrary to the denials of administration officials, advisors to the president and officials in the State and Commerce Departments knew about Hunt Oil's interest in the Kurdish region months before the contract was executed," Waxman, a California Democrat, wrote in a letter to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
In one e-mail, Hunt Oil's general manager wrote: "There was no communication to me or in my presence made by any of the 9 state department officials with whom I met ... that Hunt should not pursue our course of action leading to a contract. In fact, there was ample opportunity to do so, but it did not happen."
Spokesmen for the State Department and Hunt Oil were not immediately available for comment.
State Department spokesman Tom Casey said on Wednesday that "we continue to stand by our previous statements that he U.S. government made its objections to this arrangement known both to the company as well as to the KRG (Kurdistan Regional Government)," The Washington Post reported.
Waxman's office released documents dating to June 2007, saying they raised questions about U.S. involvement in recently announced negotiations between the Iraqi government and major U.S. and multinational oil companies.
He told Rice he was seeking information about a possible U.S. role in the efforts of those companies to obtain Iraqi contracts.
"You and other administration officials have denied playing any role in these contracts. In the case of Hunt Oil, however, similar denials appear to have been misleading," Waxman wrote.
The government of Iraq's northern Kurdish region announced on September 8, 2007, that it had signed a gas and oil production sharing contract with a unit of Hunt Oil and with Impulse Energy Corp.
Hunt Oil Chief Executive Ray Hunt denied that his ties to the Bush family and the Republican Party helped his company cut a deal with the largely autonomous region.
Hunt said in a Wall Street Journal interview in October the company received no government advice before striking the deal.
"The fact is, as a matter of policy, we never have and never will go to the government of the U.S. and ask the government's advice on anything we do from a business point of view," he was quoted as saying.
Iraq has the world's third-largest oil reserves, which are mainly in the north and the south of the country.
Kurdish officials have clashed with Baghdad over the national oil law, which will determine how contracts are awarded and how revenues are distributed. The northern Iraqi region has signed several exploration deals with foreign firms, which Baghdad says are illegal.

Show AllHardly surprising now, is it?

And Waxman issues yet another 'strongly worded letter.'
Heckofajob, Harry.
This is some more Orwell stuff. Who did all this without checking it out in the White House? Bush maintains he knew nothing about it, the lying son-of-bitch.
You would think Bush believes he won the Presidency because of his brilliance.
And McCain thinks he will win because he loved the Navy.
Hunt is a drinking buddy of W's
It would not matter who is elected the next President, or who is in either house, the Hunts and the others will always have the situation working in their favor---FOR their favors----TO the one's who are elected. And for those who believe that Mr. Bush "did not know"------there is Beach Front Property for sale in Arizona---well, it will be when California falls off.
Take the money away from the politics----and the politicians will do the bidding of those who put them into office.
OR A DIFFERENT APPROACH
Then again, if you think about it in a more base manner----since the politicians are mostly corrupt-(non-corrupt politicians would not be considered electable)--why not organize the populace into "groups", who then pool their money into large funds---call them---"Hooker Funds" for example,( for the lack of a better comparison) then offer the "prostitutes in office", more money than the "special interests", buying those favors from those particular "Hookers"------after all are we not talking big business here. In fact, it could be organized along the manner as the stock exchange, call it the "Hooker Exchange", and start the bidding each day,
M-F,@ 7AM until 3PM EST, with the previous days "price index"------giving the Hookers a stated time limit on the "favors they must render", in order to collect their money, or risk the possibility that they may be, "cut off", and start back at the bottom on the "next days Hooker Exchange". In this manner they would be forced by the "US Hooker Exchange Commission" to either perform as proscribed, or be taken out of office and replaced with a "Hooker that performs"---
They could have Sat and Sun to either "rest", or "give it away"---(then they could be called "sluts") In this manner the "really good performers" could be part of a whole new "category" while those who perform poorly, would be forgotten----instead of waiting until they leave office for those really big paying jobs, and "extras"---they could have it all, and the highest bidders can enjoy it along with them.........that would be the poeple. Taking into consideratoin that the "expense" is "spread out" in this manner----the "benefits" would be "spread out " as well. The "party", Dem or Rep could be the "pimps"-------
Hey folks this could be a viable plan.
How much worse off would all of us be---including the "Hookers"---------?
Cheers to NativeSon (624pm). I can go for that Hookers plan of yours in a big way.
It immediately brings to mind a rather agressive member of the press interviewing the Governor Paterson after Elliot Spitzer resigned in disgrace following the expose of his consorting with "ladies of the evening".
The reporter addressed Paterson rather directly, asking him if he had any dealings with hookers. Paterson wryly replied. "Yes, I have but I believe they were called lobbyists"
In the article in this morning's Washington Post regarding this Hunt Oil deal, Hunt's manager, a chap named McDonald was quoted as saying something about opportunity taking precadance over legal ambiguity.
And there they go again, jumping all over George & Barbara's little boy. How could anyone suggest Dubya would have any knowledge of the goings on that involved a member of his (un)intelligence committee and also a fund raiser.
Hey, Waxman; hope that letter you sent to Condi was written on toilet paper cause you know what it's gonna be used for.
I'd better quit before I get nasty.
Condi can't wipe her ass she can't tell where the shit ends and something else begins. She is Bu$h the inferior's 'wife' according to a Freudian slip she had some years ago. Any woman voluntarily associating herself with Bu$h the inferior is truly sick.
pontificatinpapa July 3rd, 2008 7:09 pm There I got nasty for you. Save you some wear and tear.
Those in Congress, if they had the will, could have put away this neocon Regime a loooong time ago.
The other day I heard "we are still in the Gilded Age (late 19th century)" of the robber-barons. Know what? It's true—it's never ended, only been embelished.
Another example of the sort of Third World-esque crony capitalism mixed with Robber Baron era ethics that Dubya, Cheney, & Co. have ushered onto the American stage. In fact, I applaud the Kurds for making the deal, as they seem to be the only party in the deal who have their priorities straight (their own self-interest) and make no apologies for it. It seems as if the Kurds know that Iraq will turn into a Middle Eastern version of the Yugoslavia break up and are preparing themselves for it.
You can not ask Bush or Rice for any information, they never gonna tell the truth, for what they say are LIES and more LIES, it is like asking a confessed killer if he has killed, "ofcourse NOT" is the answer. Bush and Condi Rice reminds me of the song " me and my Shadow dancing down the White House avenue.."
