Map Reveals Extent of Deforestation in Tropical Countries
A map of the world's tropical forests has revealed that millions of hectares of trees were cut back to make way for crops in recent years.
Created from high-resolution satellite images, the map shows the extent of deforestation in the tropics with unprecedented accuracy.
Between 2000 and 2005, at least 27.2m hectares (68m acres) of tropical forests were cleared to make way for farming. Almost half of the deforested land was in Brazil, nearly four times more than the next most deforested country, Indonesia, which accounted for 12.8% of cleared land.
Scientists led by Matthew Hansen at South Dakota State University created the map to help inform conservationists and politicians about the state of the world's forests. While figures on deforestation are already compiled by the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation, they are based on unverified estimates submitted by individual countries, and rarely describe where in a country forests are being cleared.
Recent estimates by the UN suggest that around 13m hectares of the world's forests are lost to deforestation each year, with South America alone losing more than 4m hectares a year.
"We wanted to be able to pinpoint exactly where deforestation was happening, because that gives you much more information for policy makers to act upon," said Fred Stolle at Conservation International in Washington DC.
The scientists collected images taken between 2000 and 2005 by Nasa's Modis satellite network, which photographs the surface of the Earth every one to two days in 500m-wide snapshots.
The researchers used the images to identify deforestation "hotspots" in the tropics, and then created a detailed map using a second satellite network called Landsat, which is accurate to within 30m.
According to the map, over the five-year period, Brazil lost 3.6% of its forest cover, Indonesia 3.4%, Latin America 1.2%, the rest of Asia 2.7% and Africa 0.8%. The study appears in the US journal, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The map showed that deforestation in Indonesia was largely concentrated in just two regions, and that much of it was peatland. "The peatlands are essentially all carbon, so if you clear it and fire it, an enormous amount of carbon will be emitted into the atmosphere," said Stolle. "Without a precise map, we would not know that level of detail."
The researchers hope to produce annual updates of the map to show trends in deforestation.
The map is a conservative estimate of deforestation because it only shows where forests have been cut down and not replaced. It does not take into account selective logging, areas where forests have been replanted, or general degradation of forests.

Show AllSimple, unavoidable, and indisputable fact: there are too damn many of us on this planet.
The ongoing destruction of natural habitat is a direct result of the earth's overpopulation, a problem that will only get worse.
The only thing that will allow humanity to survive as a species will be a devastating pandemic probably involving some disease that is currently unknow or little known. Nature has its own means of population control.
I'd really love some good news, folks.
jj
How are you so sure, JJ, that you'll be one of the happy survivors of your pandemic?
I say, don't wish for massive numbers of human deaths; you might get what you want -- in spades.

Don't worry, in 6 months to a year Iran will solve most of the population problem. When they start tossing their nuclear bombs around, oil will be over $1000.00 a barrel, because the Iranian missiles are a bit inaccurate about 98% of the Palestinians will be vaporized, 60% of the jews, 70% of the Iranians. The Iranians will also try to hit some European cities like Rome, Moscow, London and a few others they might even put a few medium range missiles on a couple of oil tankers and hit the US (they have successfully launched medium range missiles off oil tankers in the Caspian Sea according to Russian reports) then we get to see what a nuclear winter is all about. If you think about it the Iranians are doing us a huge favor, the end of global warming (the nuclear winter will probably bring on an ice age), massive population control. I know you want the world to go green but I have a feeling it's going to go white for a long, long time.
Paul_GA -- I feel the way you do, but is there any other solution? jj is right: there really are too many of us.
Here's the stunning data:
Population growth (http://desip.igc.org/populationmaps.html):
1 A.D. -- 150 million
1350 -- 300 million
1700 -- 600 million
1800 -– 900 million
1900 -- 1.6 billion
2000 -- 6.1 billion
2050 –- 9.5 billion (est.)
wolf123-you are sooo wrong about iran attacking european cities. Are you another right-wing plant aka fearmonger on this forum? You sound like a plant, just another blogger probably paid military or intelligence? Well either way (just a dumb american, or plant) you are WRONG!!! Iran is NOT going to attack unless it is attacked first. The Iranian people will have every right to retailiate against western Zionist aggression. Maybe you think people getting bombed from 30,000 feet dont have a right to defend themselves. We call those people fascists...
hey wolf123 -- still spreading your AIPAC anti Iranian bile around?
i think WOLF123 is taking the piss guys..........
JJ here's some good news for you.........make sure you take the lyrics in and don't forget it's from the 60's.........

Yea some of the kool-aid drinkers, sure make the same old bi-assed, comments lately I've been thinking, a dangerous thing I know,,,,but what about bio-fuel from human waste, or just their f****** rotting corpses, makes sense, "soylent Green is people...!!!"
Paul_GA, you have mistaken a lament for a wish.
I don't know if I will be one of the survivors and I don't believe that those who do survive will be happy.
Personally, I don't think I care whether I survive or not. However, I do despair for my grandchildren and everyone else's.
If anything shows how depraved and evil Bush, Cheney, et al. truly are it is the realization that they don't care about their own grandchildren.

Thanks. I had completely forgotten about that song. It does encourage one to keep things in perspective.
jj
We have lost all perspective on how much is happening over the entire earth that is contributing to a major fall from grace in mother natures eyes.
Think of just the smoke that is rising from the forest fires in California. That alone is sending hordes of people to the hospital for breathing problems.
Think of the air quality in China that is so bad that they are trying to cause rain in order to clear the smoky haze from the sky so millions can "fly" into Bejiing to watch athletes not be able to breathe.
This is utter and complete insanity folks.
We are sitting silent and preaching to the choir. It is time to get out amongst the masses and start preaching to them. Talk to the guy next to you in line at the grocery store. Talk to the guy at work. Talk to the other woman at the beauty salon. Talk to your neighbors. Host a small get together with them. Be prepared to give them facts. Start spreading the word as to what they NEED to do to become part of the solution.
This is very very serious. We must begin to get out beyond our own little circles. Brave the debate by being informed.
There are websites that give lots of info. I have a collection of different stuff I have pasted into a missive from different things over the past year that interested me in case anyone wants to sift through it.
Let's share what we are doing about it and work for our benefit. Sure I think it's a lost cause too but I'm going to go down fighting.

"you are sooo wrong about iran attacking european cities."
Are you for real, or do you spout this crap because you have NO social life ?
Google Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and shia twelvers
All of you are a bunch of kindergarten children compared to him. You moan and cry about global warming and the destruction of the planet, NOW you want to slaughter a few billion people because the earth is OVER CROWDED, and will not be satisfied until we ALL stop using fossil fuel and go back to living in the 17th century. You are conspiracy theorists and believers, believing the US government and capitalism is out to destroy the world (what you FAIL to explain is what good is ruling a desolate planet and just what would those nasty capitalists spend their trillions on when money is worthless). You are less than minor league political and environmental fanatical fascists. Ahmadinejad is a RELIGIOUS fanatic, the worst of the fanatical kind, BECAUSE GOD IS on his side and god is NOT on your side.
http://www.dinocrat.com/archives/2006/01/14/a-madman-with-a-sense-of-destiny/
"Ahmadinejad may be a true believer, a madman, or both. But there is no reason to explain away his religious conviction. Two centuries ago, the Danish thinker Søren Kierkegaard described the necessity of a leap of faith over the gulf separating religious belief from unbelief. It seems today that the secular intelligentsia of the West needs a leap of imagination to understand the radically different way that men like Ahmadinejad experience the world and their place in it. We think Ahmadinejad may be mad as a hatter, but that is no reason to doubt his sincerity, his ruthlessness, or his effectiveness in pursuing his religious vision."
"The most remarkable aspect of Mr Ahmadinejad's piety is his devotion to the Hidden Imam, the Messiah-like figure of Shia Islam, and the president's belief that his government must prepare the country for his return. One of the first acts of Mr Ahmadinejad's government was to donate about £10 million to the Jamkaran mosque, a popular pilgrimage site where the pious come to drop messages to the Hidden Imam into a holy well. All streams of Islam believe in a divine saviour, known as the Mahdi, who will appear at the End of Days. A common rumour - denied by the government but widely believed - is that Mr Ahmadinejad and his cabinet have signed a "contract" pledging themselves to work for the return of the Mahdi and sent it to Jamkaran.
Iran's dominant "Twelver" sect believes this will be Mohammed ibn Hasan, regarded as the 12th Imam, or righteous descendant of the Prophet Mohammad. He is said to have gone into "occlusion" in the ninth century, at the age of five. His return will be preceded by cosmic chaos, war and bloodshed. After a cataclysmic confrontation with evil and darkness, the Mahdi will lead the world to an era of universal peace. This is similar to the Christian vision of the Apocalypse. Indeed, the Hidden Imam is expected to return in the company of Jesus."
And just how will this "cosmic chaos, war and bloodshed" come about? Well a nuclear war is a good start.
pakistan has figured out how to put it's nuclear bombs on the end of it's missiles, Pakistan's leading nuclear scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan has made sure Iran can do the same. You can hide your heads in the sand and moan over the war criminal bush administration and global warming and nasty capitalists. BUT I'll bet you one ice age over one global warming that when Iran has enough nuclear bombs on it's missiles and the time is right (only Ahmadinejad and allah will know that) then he will push the red button and world wide calamity will begin.
So call me a "right-wing plant aka fearmonger" or "paid military or intelligence" (I wish someone would pay me to read most of this crap you put out here) or a member of AIPAC. I am a realist and loooog ago I have learned to take religious fanatics at their word. When the missiles start to fly remember, the twelfth imam is coming and you all better take your heads out of the sand and kiss your butts goodbye.
WOLF123
yeah, and there's some religious fanatics alive and well and living in texas too................'(i wish someone would pay me to read most of this crap you put out here)' - it's not mandatory to visit this site as far as i know.............
CIVIL BEHAVIOUR
i've tried all you've said, and i'm treated like a leper/person of reduced responsibility/laughed at/ignored/shunned/treated with contempt. i've sorta given up. it's hard work and i've been trying for years..........most people are afraid of the truth.
JJ
for me it proves that for decades we've been ignoring things that can go wrong, go wrong, go wrong,go wrong.............
wolf123, what a load of hooey. Have you travelled outside of the USA at all or even the town you live in; do you have any cultural sensitivity or understanding or are you just ruled by insular fear and hatred?
At least try quoting some links with temporal credibility; unless I slept in badly the "devastating nuclear exchange of August 2007" mentioned in your Dinocrat.com link never happened.
"Iran will be tossing nuclear weapons"?????
I was unaware Iran had any nukes ~WOLF 123~. Our latest NIE report states that they do not, nor are they doing anything to have them in the near future or ever. I understand Isreal has some 300+ nuclear weapons. Of course they don't need them do they?
As to your ignorant comment that "we liberal progressives wish to revert to the 17th century", that is also bogus and a misinformed, childish remark.
We progressives and any humans who have half a brain, wish and want to have totally clean energy and create millions of good paying jobs to accomplish that, and have a far better, less costly form of electrical power with no pollution of our atmosphere and allow our children to continue on to the next century. You frigging, harmful to all of humanity moron.
I treat you with total respect and love ~COCO~. ____ You are a rare treasure.
Coco,
I agree with you. I too have repeatedly have been looked at askance, marginalized, ignored, and taken for a kook. I did notice that you said you "almost" have given up.
Every morning I have a short discussion with my spouse as we comment on the morning paper and stories that are headlining the news. Every morning for years it has gotten worse and worse. And every morning I put one foot in front of the other and try to remember what I must do.
I must live the very best vision of myself that I can. That includes at times (because trust me I have days where I want to totally give in) encouraging, cajoling, talking to others and asking them to please not give in totally.
This has become SO difficult. When I read another article like this one about the deforestation knowing full well what its role in the eco cycle provides I become despondent. The realization that we are committing ecological suicide is apparent. The realization that of the 6.5 billion people on earth our country is most responsible for the damage and paving the way for others to continue on this destructive path is painful.
This is why I ask you not to give up. Continue the dialogue. The earth needs you.
KEM PATRICK
thankyou for those kind words...........i really needed them right now.
CIVIL BEHAVIOUR
at least you have someone who shares your views and are able to discuss these issues with.............i'm alone out here and already labeled as an 'eccentric' for my veganism, animal/human rights activism, outspokeness (is that a word?), individualism and happy/care-free attitude. i believe it's the latter that most people fear. they haven't the courage to really 'laugh out loud', sing at the top of their voice if they feel like it, talk to animals/birds, smell flowers along the hedgerow, notice the moon and stars,..............just too 'conditioned' to enjoy the simple, free things of life to the maximum.
wolf123,
You are out of touch with reality!! Let me guess, you're a christian? It's funny how you say Ahmadinejad wants to fulfill a religious vision when I see Bush/Cheney wanting to do the exact same thing only on the fundamentalist christian side instead of the Muslim side. The american fundamentalist christians don't exactly hide the fact that they want the world to end so that they can go spend eternity with god. Ever heard of the 'rapture'? They also don't think it's a bad thing to help the prophesies along which is where Bush/Chaney come in. This just reinforces my belief that religion is the root of all evil and you are a bi-product of that evil right along with Ahmadinejad.
Please stop spreading your ultra right-wing lies!
Always turn the other cheek ~COCO~. You may be very surprised at how many there actually admire and envy you and don't say anything, therefore you are unaware.
If we get through this life with one true friend, we are fortunate.
What is a friend, a single soul residing in two bodies. ____ ~Aristotle~
Oh, and it's the upper cheeks we turn.
