Are Congressional Democrats Leading Us to War With Iran?
Until recently, the power struggle within the Bush administration over whether to attack Iran seemed to be going badly for the hawks. Their disastrous record in Iraq coupled with flimsy arguments for attacking Iran meant they were gaining little support. But now it appears congressional Democrats may be riding to the rescue of those pushing for war.
In the fall of 2007, top Bush administration officials began stoking up the rhetoric about the danger of Iran and its nuclear weapons program. But then the National Intelligence Estimate came out showing that efforts to develop nuclear weapons were dropped in 2003, in large part because of international pressure. Wow -- diplomacy does work!
Claims that Iran was arming insurgents fell apart due to flimsy evidence -- weapons that were supposedly supplied by the Iranian government appear to have been purchased on the open market or acquired through means other than official Iranian support.
So with the case for attacking Iran in tatters, why are congressional Democrats taking up the cause?
House Resolution 362, sponsored by Rep. Gary Ackerman, a New York Democrat, is moving quickly through the House. The resolution urges the Bush administration to prohibit the export to Iran of refined petroleum products, impose "stringent inspection requirements on all persons, vehicles, ships, planes, trains, and cargo entering or departing Iran," and to prohibit all Iranian officials not involved in negotiating the suspension of Iran's nuclear program from travel outside the country.
Imposing "stringent inspection requirements" would amount to a naval blockade, many believe, and thus constitute an act of war. At the very least, it would be perceived by Iranians of all political persuasions as a hostile act, further marginalizing moderate voices, unifying the country behind the most belligerent leaders, and bolstering the argument of those within Iran who are pushing for the rapid development of nuclear weapons as a defense against U.S. attack.
Why are 96 House Democrats (along with 111 House Republicans) co-sponsoring this resolution? Aren't these the Democrats who rode into majorities in both houses on public revulsion against war in the Middle East?
According to a recent story on CBS News, the answer seems to be a "full-court press" by the government of Israel and the American-Israeli lobby AIPAC. CBS ran the story Tuesday as Joint Chiefs Chairman Admiral Mike Mullen was on his way to the Middle East to confer with Israeli government officials. "Israelis are uncertain about what would be the policies of the next [U.S.] administration vis-à-vis Iran," CBS consultant Michael Oren says in the report.
Hence the rush to war?
There are alternatives. In his article in the foreign policy issue of YES! Magazine, Robert Naiman, of JustForeignPolicy.org shows that we avert the killing and maiming of Iranian civilians, by talking with Iran instead of bombing their country. Doing that could avert taking Middle East mayhem to a new level. Even better, we could actually work with Iran in an international effort to bring stability back to the region.
Indeed, Iran offered to negotiate peace in 2003 -- including a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict (thereby recognizing Israel's right to exist), full cooperation with inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency, and pressure on Hizbollah to join the political process in Lebanon, rather than act outside the law. In exchange, Iran asked for a halt to hostile U.S. actions, an end to sanctions, and recognition of Iran's security interests. We ignored their overtures.
What about the nuclear threat? In my interview with George Shultz, secretary of state under Ronald Reagan, Shultz calls for the abolition of all nuclear weapons. He's not alone. His partners in this effort include former Senator Sam Nunn, William Perry, who was secretary of defense under Bill Clinton, and Henry Kissinger.
How much easier it would be to hold Iran accountable to the provisions of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty if we complied with it ourselves, including the provisions calling for the nuclear powers to reduce stockpiles eventually to zero. How extraordinary it would be to, as Shultz says, do "something that people feel good about."
Such a move would not be naive. In fact, it may be naive to think we can allow nuclear fuels and weapons to continue to fall into the hands of governments that are feeling cornered by U.S. threats and into the possession of stateless militants. Even during the time Shultz held office, when there were fewer fingers on fewer nuclear triggers, "there were more close calls than you were comfortable with," he told me. An international agreement to abolish nuclear weapons could bring these dangerous loose nukes back under control and eventually eliminate them.
The reduction in the world's nuclear stockpiles, combined with an assurance that the U.S. will not attack Iran unless Iran attacks another country, would be major steps towards building the foundations for peace and the restoration of stability and security for all parties in the Middle East. And it would begin repairing the damaged reputation of the United States, showing that we can be a leader for global peace and democracy.
Whatever your views on war with Iran, now may be your last best chance to speak out.
Note: As has become the norm lately, the most sane policies are coming not out of Washington, DC, but out of state and local government. In her article in YES! with Ben Manski, Karen Dolan, of Cities for Peace, shows local governments setting a different direction on issues ranging from climate change to foreign policy; in her recent op-ed, she tells of the 32 U.S. mayors who have passed resolutions opposing war on Iran.
You can find additional resources on stopping the next war here.

Would someone in the know please provide us a list of Dim's who voted for House Resolution 362?
If two or three representatives could be targeted by progressives for defeat in the next elections, and defeated, perhaps the power of AIPAC could be mitigated and that extreme element of our electoral process could be neutralized to such an extent that it would become meaningless.
Mearsheimer and Walt were right.

Democrats aren't leading us to war, they are following corporate America's business plan. Which has always been war. They work for them, not us.

War with Iran? No this is the new talking point. Like abortion. Roe V Wade will never be repealed yet it is a topic of distinction that is used to seperate and divide. That is what war with Iran represents now. For or against? Thats all it is. Right now, today, Fri June 27, Iran would destroy Israel or the US one on one. We have no resources for another war. You can't argue this point if you frequent this site because you read the same articles that provide me with this information. Stuff like how our current occupation of Iraq has caused the infinite tours by our current forces and how 40 year old troops are being called up from reserves and how when your time is up they are prolonging your tour and not letting you out of the service. If all of these reports are true, and we only have a small amount of forces in Iraq to begin with, where does anyone think we would get troops to go into Iran? We cannot nuke Iran any sooner than we could Iraq. You would contaminate the very purpose for being there and now with Iran in particular start up agressions with Russia again. So explain it to me like I am a four year old, because I really do want to understand how anyone thinks we have any money or resources to take on Iran????????????
When have Democrats ever been against war??? That is after all how they reward their benefactors (MIC).
The anti-war rhetoric is ONLY used to get votes from the sleepy drones.
Here is another point to mull over. The pre Bush admin game plan was Iraq, Iran, Syria and North Korea. We have all read that report of how that was their game plan before they even stole the office. Well, here we are 8 years later, N Korea has been totally let off the hook, sanctions lifted, not a whisper about Syria, and the saber rattling over Iran has been going on for the length of the occupation of Iraq.
No! Magazine says that there will be no war because Maliki and other Shiite militias in Iraq, the Iranian Regime and USA have done a deal to ensure the spoils from Israel's sabre rattling are to be distributed fairly amongst all parties including interested friendly corporate partners.
liberal with an attitude June 27th, 2008 1:10 pm ..The resources are always there for war one way or the other. This would be a bombing mission, so manpower is not an issue. Of bombers and bombs we have a virtually unlimited supply. Please do not put anything beyond the possibility of this regime. You are not dealing with sane humans.
The Democrats have not made any indication in this election that they are going down the path of nuclear non-proliferation (no talk of even limited reductions of warheads). That doesn't mean they want to go to war with Iran (at least notin the short term). It's more the carrot and big stick approach, ie see article on North Korea's nuclear program in today's NY Times.
Willybill - I totally agree with what you have said, and in fact would go further, and say that the US would never attempt a land invasion of Iran, because of the Geography of the country and the logistics required. The Russians failed to subdue the Taleban in Afghanistan, in similar terrain, and the differences between the Iranian army and the Taleban are immense.
I hope that common sense will prevail, and the current administration are kicked out before they can inflict any more damage on the World.
Inevitably the actions performed in the name of Zionism will justify, in the minds of many, another 5000 years of anti-semitism. Strange how we always end up being our own worse enemy.

I also agree that we can never overestimate these psychopath's stupidity.

Please do consider that w/o USA participation, it would be a small matter of a few months time for the Iranian survivors ( after a horrific Israeli nuking, and use of ALL of their wicked reserves … ), of possibly 2o,ooo,ooo really angry fighters - to walk to Israel and take that place apart stone by stone …
The Good News, is that Jerusalem likely would not have to be entirely destroyed.
Namaste
I don't agree with Willybill and most others here. I would suggest you look at the ties between the Iraqi regime with Iran, the Shiite militias and Iran and USA's occupying role. There has already been talks between all these parties that you would only find out about if you can read arabic and studied the foreign press. Lots of stuff goes on that our "embedded" reporters never mention.
Here's a good take on US policy with Iran, especially as Thomas Powers refers to the historical concerns when a number of nations who themselves were on the brink of joining the nuclear club.

citizenblog - like what stuff goes on that our embedded reporters never mention? you could be our reporter if you read that language then inform us - ok?
Sarah, you say, "...Imposing "stringent inspection requirements" would amount to a naval blockade, many believe, and thus constitute an act of war..." YOU ARE ABSOLUTLEY CORRECT ABOUT THAT. THE DEMS ARE VOTING FOR WAR ! A blockade IS an act of war.
When are people going to get the message that Congress doesn't represent us? The Senate is also going along with Bush's cuts to Medicare.
On Iran there is not a nanometer difference between wannabes Obama and McCain.

Are Congressional Democrats Leading Us to War With Iran?

Hmm... well, if they are, it's only in a Judas-goaty sort of way.
God damn it please, people wake up! Congress is bought. The presidency is bought. Done. Gone. Your vote will slightly affect the way this fascist government treats you in the USA. That is all. UNTIL we wake the hell up, until the American people--the asses of the masses-take to the streets-REVOLT- we will see a greater and greater move to PRIVATIZE all of OUR public space. We will live to see the corporate state as our masters.
Iran, like Iraq before it, is nothing more than a CORPORATE ACQUISITION, paid for and DIED for by the American people. Using stupid citizens as fodder saves on business expenses. God bless the free market.
We get to 'vote' for either the left hand puppet or the right hand puppet being presented by the A.I.PACman. The only way Americans will ever be 'safe' from our government is for the Bush Bucks to follow the Zimbabwe Dollar. Lt. Calley was right - since America will not come to it's senses then it must be brought to it's knees - the only way to 'save' it is to destroy it.
I wonder what America will be if it ever grows up.
'Are Congressional Democrats Leading Us to War With Iran?'
What a question! Of course they are!
"Why are 96 House Democrats (along with 111 House Republicans) co-sponsoring this resolution? Aren't these the Democrats who rode into majorities in both houses on public revulsion against war in the Middle East?"
The public may want out of Iraq . . . but not the pirates and killers in Washington, D.C. (Death and Corruption). What's the difference between your left shoe and your right shoe? Nothing, except the feet you wear them on. Otherwise, they are a pair.
Please don't forget the Kyl-Leiberman resolution our bipartisan Congress passed last year, declaring a segment of Iran's regular national military (the Quods force) to be a "terrorist organization", therefore exempt from the Geneva Conventions should American soldiers engage them in combat.
In a reply fit of parallel legislative posturing, the Iranian parliament passed a response resolution designating US occupation forces in Iraq and the CIA as "terrorist organizations."
How nicely the stage is set, with everybody declaring the other guy to be a George Bush "enemy combatant", vulnerable to torture or summary execution if ever taken prisoner on the battlefield, heaven forbid.
What goes around comes around.
Bill from Saginaw
If we all voted for someone other than Democrats (honorable exceptions Barbara Lee, Dennis Kucinich, Lynn WoOlsey,--Russ Feingold and Robert Byrd in the Senate)it probably wouldn't change the outcome of the elections but it would allow all of us to cease feeling like suckers or enablers. It would also be an encouragement to candidates like McKinney, Nader, and Kucinich to keep on trying if all of us sent them a $10-$25 check.
Just signed a petition over the net this am about 362, it hasn't passed yet. A lot of good that will probably do, but it does let my representives know I am not in favor of this.
Looks like another lost cause. Come On Vermont, Secede.
Its should be obvious by now that it doesnt matter at all whether its a republican or democrat thing; the fix is in either way. Its futile to even discuss anything political. The big boys will do whatever they want and the public is screwed. The Constitution is toast. We are told what to think by the corporate media and we quickly obey without question. The public realizes this and thats why half of us sit home on election day. Sad.
This is IMPORTANT: Please contact your Reps. & Senators to oppose Resolution 362!
This is sponsored by Voters for Peace;
Oppose Resolution 362
The resolution's key section "demands that the president initiate an international effort to
immediately and dramatically increase the economic, political, and diplomatic pressure on Iran to verifiably suspend its nuclear enrichment activities by prohibiting the export to Iran of all refined petroleum products; imposing stringent inspection requirements on all persons, vehicles, ships, planes, trains, and cargo entering or departing Iran; and prohibiting the international movement of all Iranian officials not involved in negotiating the suspension of Iran's nuclear program."
This resolution essentially calls for an act of war – a naval blockade of Iran. If passed by the
Congress and Bush does what is asked it ensures war with Iran. Iran is three times the size of
Iraq. If you think the Iraq war and occupation have been bad, wait till you see what war with Iran brings.

If we flood their inboxes, maybe we can prevent THIS war!
People, people, ATTENTION please!!
All this talk about whether it's going to be the Democrats or the Republicans that are going to lead us into war with Iran is totally unnecessary.
Why, you might ask?
Well, I was just hoping you would.
You see, North Korea, who have been highly suspect with regard to nuclear weaponry submitted their report to China on the subject.
Following that, the U. S. (and our fearless leader George W. Bush) removed North Korea from his terrorist list (though I believe more people are probably concerned with Mr. Blackwell's annual Worst Dressed List).
All we need now is for Ahmadinejad to submit a report to the Chinese government stating his intentions with regard to Iran's nuclear program.
If it comes through China, then we know we can believe it; there'll be no more sanctions and no more threats of war against Iran by us (of course, Israel is free to do whatever they want, but how likely are they to do anything without our support)
Am I possibly being too naive here? Is Iran's close proximity to Israel versus the greater distance to North Korea a factor here? Please tell me so I don't go on rambling like this. I don't want to sound like I've got smudges on my rose-colored glasses.
I believe that Israel is the leader of the pack right now with the Bush administration right behind and of course the Coporate powers that will gain more power and money from an armed conflict with Iran, then comes along those 82 Blue dog Democrats who help suck up and kiss the butts of those higher up this chain. By the way thats a very good question what are the names of those 82 Democrats?
"God damn it please, people wake up! Congress is bought. The presidency is bought. Done. Gone." Exactly. A major US contributing factor to the GDP is war. Heavy investment in the military industrial complex vis-a-vis both multimillionaires' and working class pensions guarantees that war will continue to be profitable in perpetuity. A Repub or Demo Congress or president matters very little. Elections are exercises in futility. That said, a vote for Nader, McKinney, and other 3rd party candidates allows for a conscious break with the status quo and casts some credence onto the notion that not all the people are being duped.
tommytoons55; thank you!! Who are those 82 dems?
That resolution is revolting! As a former registered dem; i quit 5 minutes ago! I am now sn independent, but not a Lieberman-like piece of shit!
BILL FROM SAGINAW: Excellent point. It makes one wonder if it will be the military that says NO, since their numbers are in line for the greatest feedback IF things escalate with Iran.
LIBERAL WITH AN ATTITUDE; It was Seymour Hersh writing I believe in Vanity Fair who spoke about the use of our AIR FORCE to do air raids over Iran. If "low level nuclear bunker busters" would be used in such a travesty, the radiation would be MURDER to many. I hope that sanity prevails. It seems preposterous that so-called leaders can be so blind to the fall-out (on all levels) from such an act of aggression. Don't they recognize what rising gas prices will mean in terms a full out implosion of the U.S. economy? Is there not an iota of mercy for the evident warning signals of climate change as seen this week in California fires and Mid West floods? Is there no capacity to SEE the big picture, to recognize has this malign folly could lead to such much pain and senseless depravity? In short, how many are awake at the wheel...
Oops (been babysitting all day and my mind is slower!) should read, "recognize how this malign folly could lead to so much pain and.."
"US Senate approves war funds bill" - June 26, 2008
The answer to the question above should be obvious to all by now - yes.
These members of Congress stand recorded as accomplices to current (and perhaps future) war crimes.
The Coming Catastrophe?
The finishing touches on several contingency plans for attacking Iran

Global Research Editor's note
We bring to the attention of our readers David DeBatto's scenario as to what might occur if one of the several contingency plans to attack Iran, with the participation of Israel and NATO, were to be carried out. While one may disagree with certain elements of detail of the author's text, the thrust of this analysis must be taken seriously.
"Israel has said a strike on Iran will be "unavoidable" if the Islamic regime continues to press ahead with alleged plans for building an atom-bomb." (London Daily Telegraph, 6/11/2008)
"Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany joined President Bush on Wednesday in calling for further sanctions against Iran if it does not suspend its uranium enrichment program." Mr. Bush stressed again that "all options are on the table," which would include military force. (New York Times, 6/11/2008)
We are fast approaching the final six months of the Bush administration. The quagmire in Iraq is in its sixth painful year with no real end in sight and the forgotten war in Afghanistan is well into its seventh year. The "dead enders" and other armed factions are still alive and well in Iraq and the Taliban in Afghanistan again controls most of that country. Gas prices have now reached an average of $4.00 a gallon nationally and several analysts predict the price will rise to $5.00-$6.00 dollars per gallon at the pump by Labor Day. This, despite assurances by some major supporters of the decision to invade Iraq that the Iraq war "will pay for itself" (Paul Wolfowitz) or that we will see "$20.00 per barrel" oil prices if we invade Iraq (Rupert Murdoch).
One thing the Pentagon routinely does (and does very well) is conduct war games. Top brass there are constantly developing strategies for conducting any number of theoretical missions based on real or perceived threats to our national security or vital interests. This was also done prior to the invasion of Iraq, but the Bush administration chose not to listen to the dire warnings about that mission given to him by Pentagon leaders, or for that matter, by his own senior intelligence officials. Nevertheless, war gaming is in full swing again right now with the bullseye just to the right of our current mess – Iran.
It's no secret that the U.S. is currently putting the finishing touches on several contingency plans for attacking Iranian nuclear and military facilities. With our ground forces stretched to the breaking point in Iraq and Afghanistan, none of the most likely scenarios involve a ground invasion. Not that this administration wouldn't prefer to march into the seat of Shiite Islam behind a solid, moving line of M1 Abrams tanks and proclaim the country for democracy. The fact is that even the President knows we can't pull that off any more so he and the neo-cons will have to settle for Shock and Awe Lite.
If we invade Iran this year it will be done using hundreds of sorties by carrier based aircraft already stationed in the Persian Gulf and from land based aircraft located in Iraq and Qatar. They will strike the known nuclear facilities located in and around Tehran and the rest of the country as well as bases containing major units of the Iranian military, anti-aircraft installations and units of the Revolutionary Guard (a separate and potent Iranian para-military organization).
Will this military action stop Iran's efforts to develop nuclear weapons? Probably not. It will probably not even destroy all of their nuclear research facilities, the most sensitive of which are known to be underground, protected by tons of earth and reinforced concrete and steel designed to survive almost all attacks using conventional munitions. The Iranian military and Revolutionary Guard will most likely survive as well, although they will suffer significant casualties and major bases and command centers will undoubtedly be destroyed. However, since Iran has both a functioning Air Force, Navy (including submarines) and modern anti-aircraft capabilities, U.S. fighter-bombers will suffer casualties as well. This will not be a "Cake Walk" as with the U.S. led invasion of Iraq in 2003 when the Iraqi Army simply melted away and the Iraqi Air Force never even launched a single aircraft.
Not even close.
If the United States attacks Iran either this summer or this fall, the American people had better be prepared for a shock that may perhaps be even greater to the national psyche (and economy) than 9/11. First of all, there will be significant U.S. casualties in the initial invasion. American jets will be shot down and the American pilots who are not killed will be taken prisoner - including female pilots. Iranian Yakhonts 26, Sunburn 22 and Exocet missiles will seek out and strike U.S. naval battle groups bottled up in the narrow waters of the Persian Gulf with very deadly results. American sailors will be killed and U.S. ships will be badly damaged and perhaps sunk. We may even witness the first attack on an American Aircraft carrier since World War II.
That's just the opening act.
Israel (who had thus far stayed out of the fray by letting the U.S. military do the heavy lifting) is attacked by Hezbollah in a coordinated and large scale effort. Widespread and grisly casualties effectively paralyze the nation, a notion once thought impossible. Iran's newest ally in the region, Syria, then unleashes a barrage of over 200 Scud B, C and D missiles at Israel, each armed with VX gas. Since all of Israel is within range of these Russian built weapons, Haifa, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and virtually all major civilian centers and several military bases are struck, often with a result of massive casualties.
The Israeli Air Force orders all three squadrons of their F-16I Sufa fighter/bombers into the air with orders to bomb Tehran and as many military and nuclear bases as they can before they are either shot down or run out of fuel. It is a one way trip for some of these pilots. Their ancient homeland lies in ruins. Many have family that is already dead or dying. They do not wait for permission from Washington, DC or U.S. regional military commanders. The Israeli aircraft are carrying the majority of their country's nuclear arsenal under their wings.
Just after the first waves of U.S. bombers cross into Iranian airspace, the Iranian Navy, using shore based missiles and small, fast attack craft sinks several oil tankers in the Straits of Hormuz, sealing off the Persian Gulf and all its oil from the rest of the world. They then mine the area, making it difficult and even deadly for American minesweepers to clear the straits. Whatever is left of the Iranian Navy and Air Force harasses our Navy as it attempts minesweeping operations. More U.S casualties.
The day after the invasion Wall Street (and to a lesser extent, Tokyo, London and Frankfurt) acts as it always does in an international crisis – irrational speculative and spot buying reaches fever pitch and sends the cost of oil skyrocketing. In the immediate aftermath of the U.S. invasion of Iran, the price of oil goes to $200.00 - $300.00 dollars a barrel on the open market. If the war is not resolved in a few weeks, that price could rise even higher. This will send the price of gasoline at the pump in this country to $8.00-$10.00 per gallon immediately and subsequently to even higher unthinkable levels.
If that happens, this country shuts down. Most Americans are not be able to afford gas to go to work. Truckers pull their big rigs to the side of the road and simply walk away. Food, medicine and other critical products are not be brought to stores. Gas and electricity (what is left of the short supply) are too expensive for most people to afford. Children, the sick and elderly die from lack of air-conditioned homes and hospitals in the summer. Children, the sick and elderly die in the winter for lack of heat. There are food riots across the country. A barter system takes the place of currency and credit as the economy dissolves and banks close or limit withdrawals. Civil unrest builds.
The police are unable to contain the violence and are themselves victims of the same crisis as the rest of the population. Civilian rule dissolves and Martial Law is declared under provisions approved under the Patriot Act. Regular U.S. Army and Marine troops patrol the streets. The federal government apparatus is moved to an unknown but secure location. The United States descends into chaos and becomes a third world country. Its time as the lone superpower is over.
It doesn't get any worse than this.
Then the first Israeli bomber drops its nuclear payload on Tehran.

New World Order
Excerpt: "Listen to the Zionist* banker, Paul Warburg:
"We will have a world government whether you like it or not. The only question is whether that government will be achieved by conquest or consent." (February 17, 1950, as he testified before the US Senate).
Their intention is to effect complete and total control over every human being on the planet and to dramatically reduce the world's population by two thirds. While the name New World Order is the term most frequently used today to loosely refer to anyone involved in this conspiracy, the study of exactly who makes up this group is a complex and intricate one."

I would like to believe that before they would turn our country into a martial law imposed dictatorship our soldiers and Marines would realize that their orders were illegal and they would turn their weapons on the corrupt government in Washington that led us into the terrible mess that will occur if the attack on Iran that the current right wing government in Israel appears to be planning actually happens.
Some of these imbeciles actually believe all that crap about Armageddon and some bearded man on a white horse riding out of the clouds on a white charger with a big flame thrower smiting thine enemies, etc. They are crazy and belong in custody of men in white coats, not in the White House.
That is why Pelosi needs to come to her senses immediately and give John Conyers the green light to impeach.
Everyone should read Vincent Bugliosi's new book, "The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder." I just received my copy from Amazon today and it looks like a very good read so far . . .
Jesus, that was Paul Moritz Warburg. The one who spoke in 1950 was James Paul Warburg.
