'Well, There You Go': Imus the Bigot Is Back
Is Don Imus irredeemably stupid or just a run-of-the-mill racist? Perhaps the answer is both. On Monday, Imus's sports sidekick, Warner Wolf, was going over the incredibly long arrest history of football star Adam "Pacman" Jones and Imus just couldn't help himself, interrupting with the kind of question Rush Limbaugh would love: "What color is he?"
"African-American," said Wolf. "Well, there you go," harrumphed Imus. "Now we know." That is the racist part. The stupidity swirls about Imus's subsequent excuse for the inexcusable. He was apparently--in the proud tradition of the civil rights movement--standing up for racial justice. The next day on his show, in a desperate effort to hang onto his job, Imus claimed, "Obviously, [the police] are picking on him. So I asked Warner what color he was. Well, obviously, I already knew what color he was. What people should be outraged about is they arrest blacks for no reason. There was no reason to arrest this kid six times. Maybe he did something once, but I mean everyone does something once." He also said Jones is a "lovely kid."
If you believe that Imus was actually speaking out against racism, you must also believe the war in Iraq had nothing to do with oil, Bush and Cheney just joined Amnesty International and Barack Obama is desperately seeking more photo ops with Muslim women.
But even if you do believe that Imus has traded in his five-gallon cowboy hat for a black beret, his own words contradict this. This is the man run out of CBS radio and MSNBC last year for calling the Rutgers women's basketball team "nappy headed hos." This is the man who said that respected African-American journalist Gwen Ifill looked like "the cleaning lady." This is the man whose sidekicks routinely indulge in aggressive anti-Arab racism that elicits chills instead of giggles.
Jones, who despite his arrests and year-long suspension from the league, has never actually been convicted of anything, said yesterday, "I'm truly upset about the comments. Obviously Mr. Imus has problems with African-Americans. I'm upset, and I hope the station he works for handles it accordingly. I will pray for him."
Yet so far WABC has done nothing. They're seemingly convinced that Imus was merely making a misunderstood antiracist statement. Other defenders have come out of the woodwork, although with allies like these, Imus won't be gaining anymore credibility. For instance there's Sean Hannity, who argues, "Do you realize I've heard this guy repeatedly talk about race relations and the negativity and the negative impact it's had on people's lives? Don't you think if you heard that these comments would be in a broader context that you could judge him by before you run out there?" But even conservative commentators who defended Imus vociferously in the past have said that this might be a Selma bridge too far. Conservative Michael Medved, who suggested earlier criticism of Imus to be political correctness run amok, said on CNN that "it might be time for Imus to go."
It's past time for Imus to go. It is ridiculous that people like Sean Hannity, who are all for shredding the Constitution when it comes to the rights of antiwar protesters or detainees in the "war on terror," wrap themselves in the Bill of Rights and champion the First Amendment and "free speech" when it comes to Imus. This has nothing to do with free speech. This is about whether blatant racism is acceptable both in sports and on commercial radio. This is about whether we embrace the idea that with a microphone comes some measure of responsibility. Finally, most critical, this is about whether Imus himself will ever have to own up to anything. He blamed the black community and hip-hop for his comments about the Rutgers women (sure thing, MC Imus.) Now he is blaming the public at large for our own inability to comprehend his supposedly nuanced and principled brand of antiracism.
Imus can spare us all the kabuki theater of pretending to show how much he has learned from the Rutgers incident. Instead, he should actually take some responsibility by simply apologizing and finding another line of work. That's not political correctness. It's just a desire to see the kind of real antiracism we truly need in this country.

Show AllImus? Wadda you 'spect?
A sad country we live in.
"What color is [Imus] he ?"
"White". "Well, there you go,". "Now we know."
Hahahaaha. If the cap fits...
Imus is a pig. Rockerbabe sounds like a retard. And so on...
No wonder pigs like Imus, Hannity, Limbaugh, O'Reilly et al are so rich and so famous. Y'all support those scumbags. America and (especially white) Americans are racist? Geeze, what else is new. Is it any wonder that most of the world can't stand y'all!

I also agree with your posting.
Perhaps the "other" homicides are not included in the category that you mention has 52% AA participation?
What I mean is that the SELECTIVE arresting and prosecution of a CRIME is an opportunity to re-frame the crimes perpetrated by whites, so that those more privileged not only don't go to jail for the same atrocity, but the record of the crime is downgraded to useless accidental-slaughter.
There is no doubt that there is selective filtering occurring, but I submit that both "ends" of the continuum are being TWEAKED:
__ the rich continue to kill
__ but are unsullied by any attention to it
AND
__ the minorities are severely punished
__ regardless of any overriding circumstances
Namaste

Great Post!
this article is as over the top incendiary as imus is. i'm not a fan of imus and was disgusted by his remark last year, but it was not a racist remark. he made a slippery remark that could be interpreted either way, and i'm sure he was well aware of this. think of it ths way: if obama had said what imus said it would have been interpreted as comment on racial profiling. should imus have said it? absolutely not. was it an unnecessarily incendiary, irresponsible, manipulative, ratings-baiting maneuver? absolutely. if he really intended it as a comment on racial profiling, given his reputation, he should have made that immediately explicit instead of waiting until the next day. Bottom line: imus should immediately and unequivocally qualify any remark that could be misinterpreted as racist or not make the comment at all. There should be a 3-strikes rule on equivocal slippery remarks like this. on the third he should be fired.
Looks like I'm the only one who got the joke. The rest of you are having fits and Imus is ROTFL.And no, I won't tell you. If I told you it would ruin it.
Maybe Imus could sell cars, even used cars (where the money is - say 'upsell'). He could do it somewhere like Pismo Beach or Fort Lauderdale. I'm sure he's quite clever even without a microphone. Or, he could partner up with David Addington. Now that would be a real Abbot & Costello act. But who'd be Abbot, and who'd be Costello?
Not an Imus fan and won't take sides on what he meant.
But some inconvenient truths.
African-Americans (AA) represent 13% of the population.
58% of the prison population are AA
52% of homicides are committed by AA, 10% of those against whites
33% of school arrests are AA's
64% of those arrested for drugs are AA
Now, why is this? AA's are being targetted? AA's committing more crimes?
More AA's living in poverty, as 25% of AA live in Poverty compared to 20% of Hispanics and 9% of non-hispanic whites? Look at the incarceration rates. Non Hispanic Whites -70% of population, 229 per 100,000, AA - 13% of population - 1,580 per 100,000, Hispanics - 13% of population, 549 per 100,000. I do not think poverty accounts for this drastic difference in incarceration rates relative poverty rates.
Clearly AA's are being targetted or commiting more crimes. If you try to verify these numbers beware of the trick of the DOJ that likes to include hispanic and non-hispanic whites together, and lump them under "white" to mask the impact of immigrants on crime, and increasing the crime and incarceration rates of "white", which makes AA rates look not as bad.
If they are committing more crimes could it be that AA's grow up being taught to hate whites and the system for past sins?. Imagine going to church and listening to Pastor Wright growing up. Read Obamas dramas From My Father.
If they are being targetted, then shouldn't this be an issue, and not Imus. The drug laws seem to be more harsh for the drugs AA's favour than whites. Why is this? Imus may very well be a racist, but clearly, there is an issue based on facts that AA's are being arrested at very high rates.
Rockerbabe, whether it matters, I really couldn't care less, I felt Clinton did suffer from alot of sexism, and while I have not commented on this forum, it was ridiculous. However, you assertion of "hypocracy" I completely reject - both racism and sexism are pernicious, intractable blots on our society, yet both are not, as you seem to think, experienced equally, especially where in concerns the unearned privilege white folks gain by virture of their skin, and people of color. This does NOT excuse the attitude towards Clinton, but I don't seem to remember alot of Clinton supporters getting all worked up about Hillary's obvious appeals to "hard working" rural white voters in PA and KY.
So, save your comments regarding hypocracy for someone who gives a damn.
Someone beat me to the punch: Don Imus is a pig.
Also, he talks like trash and looks like it too.
Moving on...

Thats the way to treat an Imus. Good post.
Lorax, BET is owned by a white man. If there is racist claptrap on his station, isn't that his responsibility?
I'm black and I don't give two fucks about anything Don Imus says. Everyone can 'say' what they like. However, if someone commits a racist act, they should be dealt with in the most severe manner possible. Racism has within it the power element. Ideas, even when expressed, may hurt emotionally but, it's physical actions that need to be addressed.
I've drank beer and had a good time with so-called racists that couldn't bust a grape. Besides, most racists only have the power to hurt you in groups. There's no accounting for the strange beliefs that some people hold but, as long as they keep their hands to themselves, I'm good.
All this talk about another Imus comment yet not a peep about Michael Reagan's recent call for people to murder anti-war activists? Aye Carumba!

I don't get the self-righteous comments about respecting free speech. You support free speech for Don Imus (racist) but not for Dave Zirin (antiracist)? How disheartening to see such stupid thoughts coming from the supposedly progressive community. The article never once suggested government censorship, so calling it an infringement of free speech to remove him is a canard anyway. It's pubic disapproval having an effect on the decisions of a private business.
When did he leave?
I think it's about time "PIGS" like IMUS are removed from any type of Video, Radio, etc...He is a Racist, Bigoted, Biased, Sexist, PIG just like Howard Stern !! Isn't it about time this world revolves around saying and pointing out something other than people's COLOR ???? Why not focus also on all the sexist filth thrown at us thru TV, Radio, by all other beings as well and try to make this a better place to live for everyone !! And not such a Country focused on Color, Sex, Views, and physical characteristics !! And accept each other for what our differences are !!!
Caucasians, Africans, Asians, Indians, Arabs, Jews, etc., are not different races. Rather, they are different ethnicities of the human race. All human beings have the same physical characteristics (with minor variations, of course). More importantly, all human beings are created in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:26-27).
"Whilst this old bigot has a right to say what he wants, Zirin has every right to tell him to go find another form of work", tells me all I wanna know. "No, racism cannot be merely eradicated by words alone, but to suggest that it should not be challenged at every turn is ridiculous."
I wonder if you feel the same about overt and subtle sexism? I am amazed that Imus is being verbally shamed for his maybe racist remarks, but few people seemed to get upset at all the filth hurled at Senator Clinton. Indeed, the media executives claim their is no sexism in the media??? Oh really?! If you people won't take on Olberman, Hannity, CNN in general, the late Russert, etc, on their offensive comments about women, then don't complain to me about the same type of comments hurled against a non-white. Hypocrisy seems to be the rule now; not respect for others.
Who cares about this?
It's yet another little cluster bomb in the arsenal of the MSM's Weapons of Mass Distraction.
Bread and Circuses...
bogan: i agree with much of what you say. however, i will freely admit that i do care more - much more - about freedom of speech than i do about imus', or anybody's, long history of rascism. had mr. zirin written an open to letter to imus challenging his rascist speech, i would have applauded. instead, he chose to write an opinion piece that left me questioning his regard for freedom of speech.
without free speech, only the point of view of those that control speech will ever be heard. such a situation would certainly be a hindrance rather than a help in improving the human condition.
The incident and the WABC non-reaction to it tells me two things:
1. Don Imus' show is one boring pile of crap with lousey ratings.
2. This whole kerfluffle is a desperate attempt by the "talent" and his management to try to cook up some interest in a tired and worn out act.
This is getting old.
Imus is a shock jock and his comments are meant to be controversial. So what if they are racist? There's an off switch.
There's a racist Cable network called BET. So what?
Racists are going to always be around. Muslim haters, gay bashers, Klansmen, Panthers, gang bangers, etc.
All of them want the same thing - ATTENTION. As long as people keep bitching about Imus and how bigoted he is, he just soaks up the attention / controversy which is his LIVING.
safiyyah – we already have those "Black run show that consist of making anti-White comments." In an effort to find interesting talk radio in Ohio (since they removed progressive radio from NE Ohio more than a year ago), I've listened to Tom Joyner and Michael Baisden. Mr. Baisden has a good show replete with intelligence and respect for all people. On the other show, however, I once listened to a discussion of how BAD white women smell – lots of laughter and unkind comments. One of the females on the show said "perhaps it's the difference in skin and hair products" but the discussion of how bad we white women smell went on.
Racism is everywhere – deeply embedded in all cultures and colors. It will never go away. Its genesis is ignorance - and THAT will never go away. Ergo....
good post bogan
So just when does "free speech" become moral or intellectual authorship of hate crime? I'm not suggesting this incident has turned that corner, but I suspect Limbaugh, et al. have come close on several, if not many, occasions. That deserves to be guarded and fought back against.
First off, whilst this old bigot has a right to say what he wants, Zirin has every right to tell him to go find another line of work, that hardly rises to the level of 'muzzling him'!No one, has the right to go unchallenged for one's comments. As an African-American, the fact that some of you care more about this idiot's right to free speech than his long history of racism, and the corporations that profit from his racism, tells me all I wanna know. No, racism cannot be merely eradicated by words alone, but to suggest that it should not be challenged at every turn is ridiculous.
Imus is now on RFD-TV, a cable/satellite channel featuring some very interesting shows - trains, actual farm/agricultural programs, horses, cattle, etc. Of course, they also play lots of country-style chat shows, along with polka and square dancing shows. With Imus playing the grumpy old cowboy, the show is a perfect fit. I know all farmers and/or rural residents aren't going to automatically buy the Imus schtick, but it's being served on a tray every morning.
Imus (I Make Up Shit) as I go along........
Coffee,,,,,
safiyyah: Mr. Zirin wasn't just calling attention to Imus being "a stupid and unrepentent rascist." He wants to muzzle him: "...he should actually take some responsibility by simply apologizing and finding another line of work."
What good does apology do? Just more "kabuki theater" unless it's motivated by real repentance.
And what does Zirin mean by "real antirascism"? It seems to me that a person is either rascist or not. I don't see rascism as a point of view that can be eradicated by its opposite (whatever that is).
As for "balanced free speech" - seems an oxymoron to me.
I think in reality "andersl" has it right.
The free speech arguments here assume, as safiyyah pointed out, that the first amendment has been fairly and equitably distributed, which simply isn't the case.
So, I suppose, folks do have the "freedom to turn the dial."
But it's to yet more biased, racist, elitist and sexist content.
US media cares about only one thing:
How many eyes and ears can they deliver to their advertisers.
Will that paradigm change any time soon ?
I believe in 'free speech', too, but what does pointing out that Imus is a stupid and unrepentent racist have to do with that?
If you really believe in 'free speech', Guys, then call over to WABC and demand that they put on a Black run show that consists of making anti-White comments about dumb Honkeys. That would then be really balanced 'free speech', right?
First, thanks Common Dreams, for filling your valuable space with the inane, politically correct ramblings of a "sports correspondent." Mr. Zirin should get a real job.
I don't like Imus. Neither do I like most of the assholes who fill our airwaves, especially Limbaugh (I retch typing his name)and his ilk.
I do however, believe in freedom of speech.
If our country is in such bad shape that what these people say really matters (and indeed it may be!), then maybe the religious right fruitcakes have it right: Armageddon is the answer.
is this really any different than the garbage oreilly et al spew everyday?
should we waste our time on it? i dont think so...i believe in freedom of speech and the freedom to turn the radio dial
i dont see the use in censorship
