St. Paul and Cops Gear Up for Worst at GOP Convention
But protesters say the threat is being hyped to prevent them from exercising their free speech.
Suicide bombers. Chemical or biological attacks. Lone gunmen. Terrorist attacks. Riots. Blockades that could shut down the Republican National Convention.
In its most explicit arguments to date, the St. Paul city attorney's office on Friday outlined the "calamitous" potential of granting a request by antiwar demonstrators to change the route and time of a Sept. 1 march outside the Xcel Energy Center.
Protest organizers accused the city of scare tactics designed to legitimize the denial of free speech.
The dire warnings by the city came in a legal brief it filed to support the permit restrictions it is placing on the antiwar group.
The city warned of "immeasurable risks to public safety and security" if protesters were allowed a march route that could total 100,000 and encircle the Xcel, site of the Sept. 1-4 convention.
At the Minneapolis offices of the Coalition to March on the RNC and Stop the War, Jessica Sundin, one of the group's leaders, accused authorities of exaggerating the threats.
"There are no experiences in recent history of conventions being targeted by the kind of violence they are describing in their brief," said Sundin, who has taken a leave from her clerical job at the University of Minnesota.
"They are raising a specter of terrorism that is absolutely unfounded, and they are using it to prevent us from speaking out against terrorism being inflicted on the Iraqi people every day by U.S. occupation forces," said Sundin, who took the leave to work on the protest.
Prolonged dispute
St. Paul officials and the protesters have been engaged in a prolonged dispute over when a permit for the march would be issued and, lately, over details of the permit.
In mid-May, police granted a permit that allows demonstrators to march to the Xcel from the State Capitol and back.

Show AllOf course, these guys are the Gestapo!
I'm sure that all of the problems will sort themselves out once they locate the closest abandoned mine shaft to the convention venue to designate as a Free Speech Zone.
Head lamps make excellent targets for rubber bullets, so it'll be one of those win-win compromises!
p.s. I can see my post was careless in other ways too. I didn't mean to suggest that all anarchists are hoodlums, or that violence in self-defense is necessarily wrong. Again: sorry.
All I meant re: anarchists is that violence at protests is counter-productive, and plays right into the cop's hands. That's what they do best, and ethics aside, it seems like a STRATEGIC mistake to start throwing things and expect it to accomplish anything positive. I didn't mean to offend anarchists. Sorry.
I'm with dablackanarch on this one. Folks, get radical, or "assume the position". Your congress is voting to encourage a naval blockade of Iran, the bill (HR362) already has 169 co-sponsors in the house.
http://www.stopaipac.org/iranresolution.htm#362status
Co-sponsors include Henry Waxman and John Lewis.
Congress is gutting Fisa and granting BushCo immunity as well as the telecoms. Congress attempted to give away Habeas Corpus, we were rescued by the Supreme Court (imagine that!) Congress is collectively to the right of a court where Scalia the Fascist sits.
Get radical, get their attention. Stop traffic? Strike? Signs on Freeway? No tax payments? Lower your income so you don't pay tax? I'm hoping soon to drop out in that manner. After all, what I really enjoy doing is sitting on the porch having a beer and playing guitar with my son and his radical friends, and I can do that on 1/3 my current salary. Don't buy stuff - I now get my clothes at good will, my car cost $1,000 and it runs great and gets me to work. A couple of holes in the fenders. STOP CONSUMING.
Here's how its done:

The S. Koreans are about to overthrow their government .. why? To stop imports of US BEEF!!! Isn't a bit more at stake here? Do you care? Get off your collective a**es and hit the streets.
With global warming, peak oil, speculators driving up food prices, endless war, we are collectively screwed unless we get control of government now.
A side note. After it's all said and done, can we please, PLEASE, not institute another stinking government? You'd think we'd have learned by now but...
How come everyone always blames the anarchs? You know what? I'd trust an anarchist to actually attempt to defend themselves against the paramilitary pigs than I would a bunch of wishy-washy, begging ass 'progressives'.
The fact is that power surrenders nothing without a demand and usually that involves some bit of asskickery. I was in Seattle for the WTO and everyone knew that the police were the ones trying to kick everyone tails, while the anarchists hunkered down for a fight. Meanwhile, 'the Left' ran like a bunch of cowards and hid in shops from the pigs.
I have said it many times. There will come a day where we'll have to make a choice. Either risk fighting and dying against our own government or become pure-bred slaves. There has been no government in history that hasn't ultimately presented that choice to it's 'citizens'.
It is not criminal nor cowardly to fight back. It's cowardly to keep begging your rapists to only rape you on odd days of the week or to use a condom. If you're being raped, just as our earth is being raped, our pensions are being raped, our neighborhoods and schools are being raped, our hospitals are being raped, then to not stand and fight means that you're not a victim, you're a consenting partner in what's being done to you and yours. Black Anarch out.
War is Peace
Freedom is Slavery
Ignorance is Strength
(and now)
Protest is Terrorism
They are no doubt hoping to test their new non-lethal means of crowd control and all their new legal powers under the violent radicalization and homegrown terrorism act. If the anarchists don't give them an excuse (and I hope they won't) we can probably expect provocateurs to provide an "excuse" for the cops to riot. The wounded beast is a dangerous beast indeed. How far will the authoritarians go? How peaceful and determined will the protesters be? See you there.

Police run riot...the headlines again..
...and in case anyone missed the McClellan testimony yesterday, it was equally disturbing to hear rep. lamar smith (R) of texas suggest that party should come before country:
SMITH:
"It's hard to take Mr. McClellan or this hearing too seriously. … Scott McClellan alone will have to wrestle with whether it was worth selling out the president and his friends for a few pieces of silver."
will there be much wrestling, ya think, for trying to do what's right (however belatedly) for the country?
Lamar Smith should be impeached.
You are a Public Servant.
or were.
pretty disturbing that we are losing our rights (free speech, protest, privacy) and still the GOPs fears are unfounded.
can we say "overthrow", anyone?
