Bomb Iran? What's to Stop Us?
It's crazy, but it's coming soon -- from the same folks who brought us Iraq.
Unlike the attack on Iraq five years ago, to deal with Iran there need be no massing of troops. And, with the propaganda buildup already well under way, there need be little, if any, forewarning before shock and awe and pox -- in the form of air and missile attacks -- begin.
This time it will be largely the Air Force's show, punctuated by missile and air strikes by the Navy. Israeli-American agreement has now been reached at the highest level; the armed forces planners, plotters and pilots are working out the details.
Emerging from a 90-minute White House meeting with President George W. Bush on June 4, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said the two leaders were of one mind:
"We reached agreement on the need to take care of the Iranian threat. I left with a lot less question marks [than] I had entered with regarding the means, the timetable restrictions, and American resoluteness to deal with the problem. George Bush understands the severity of the Iranian threat and the need to vanquish it, and intends to act on that matter before the end of his term in the White House."
Does that sound like a man concerned that Bush is just bluff and bluster?
A member of Olmert's delegation noted that same day that the two countries had agreed to cooperate in case of an attack by Iran, and that "the meetings focused on 'operational matters' pertaining to the Iranian threat." So bring 'em on!
A show of hands please. How many believe Iran is about to attack the U.S. or Israel?
You say you missed Olmert's account of what Bush has undertaken to do? So did I. We are indebted to intrepid journalist Chris Hedges for including the quote in his article of June 8, "The Iran Trap."
We can perhaps be excused for missing Olmert's confident words about "Israel's best friend" that week. Your attention -- like mine -- may have been riveted on the June 5 release of the findings of the Senate Intelligence Committee regarding administration misrepresentations of pre-Iraq-war intelligence -- the so-called "Phase II" investigation (also known, irreverently, as the "Waiting-for-Godot Study").
Better late than never, I suppose.
Oversight?
Yet I found myself thinking: It took them five years, and that is what passes for oversight? Yes, the president and vice president and their courtiers lied us into war. And now a bipartisan report could assert that fact formally; and committee chair Jay Rockefeller could sum it up succinctly:
"In making the case for war, the administration repeatedly presented intelligence as fact when in reality it was unsubstantiated, contradicted, or even non-existent. As a result, the American people were led to believe that the threat from Iraq was much greater than actually existed."
But as I listened to Senator Rockefeller, I had this sinking feeling that in five or six years time, those of us still around will be listening to a very similar post mortem looking back on an even more disastrous attack on Iran.
My colleagues and I in Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity (VIPS) issued repeated warnings, before the invasion of Iraq, about the warping of intelligence. And our memoranda met considerable resonance in foreign media.
We could get no ink or airtime, however, in the Fawning Corporate Media (FCM) in the U.S. Nor can we now.
In a same-day critique of Colin Powell's unfortunate speech to the U.N. on Feb. 5, 2003, we warned the president to widen his circle of advisers "beyond those clearly bent on a war for which we see no compelling reason and from which we believe the unintended consequences are likely to be catastrophic."
It was a no-brainer for anyone who knew anything about intelligence, the Middle East, and the brown noses leading intelligence analysis at the CIA.
Former U.N. senior weapons inspector and former Marine major, Scott Ritter, and many others were saying the same thing. But none of us could get past the president's praetorian guard to drop a memo into his in-box, so to speak. Nor can we now.
The "Iranian Threat"
However much the same warnings are called for now with respect to Iran, there is even less prospect that any contrarians could puncture and break through what former White House spokesman Scott McClellan calls the president's "bubble."
By all indications, Vice President Dick Cheney and his huge staff continue to control the flow of information to the president.
But, you say, the president cannot be unaware of the far-reaching disaster an attack on Iran would bring?
Well, this is a president who admits he does not read newspapers, but rather depends on his staff to keep him informed. And the memos Cheney does brief to Bush pooh-pooh the dangers.
This time no one is saying we will be welcomed as liberators, since the planning does not include -- officially, at least -- any U.S. boots on the ground.
Besides, even on important issues like the price of gasoline, the performance of the president's staff has been spotty.
Think back on the White House press conference of Feb. 28, when Bush was asked what advice he would give to Americans facing the prospect of $4-a-gallon gasoline.
"Wait, what did you just say?" the president interrupted. "You're predicting $4-a-gallon gasoline?...That's interesting. I hadn't heard that."
A poll in January showed that nearly three-quarters of Americans were expecting $4-a-gallon gas. That forecast was widely reported in late February, and discussed by the White House press secretary at the media briefing the day before the president's press conference.
Here's the alarming thing: Unlike Iraq, which was prostrate after the Gulf War and a dozen years of sanctions, Iran can retaliate in a number of dangerous ways, launching a war for which our forces are ill-prepared.
The lethality, intensity and breadth of ensuing hostilities will make the violence in Iraq look, in comparison, like a volleyball game between St. Helena's High School and Mount St. Ursula.
Cheney's Brainchild Attacking Iran is Vice President Dick Cheney's brainchild, if that is the correct word.
Cheney proposed launching air strikes last summer on Iranian Revolutionary Guards bases, but was thwarted by the Joint Chiefs of Staff who insisted that would be unwise, according to J. Scott Carpenter, a senior State Department official at the time.
Chastened by the unending debacle in Iraq, this time around Pentagon officials reportedly are insisting on a "policy decision" regarding "what would happen after the Iranians would go after our folks," according to Carpenter.
Serious concerns include the vulnerability of the critical U.S. supply line from Kuwait to Baghdad, our inability to reinforce and the eventual possibility that the U.S. might be forced into a choice between ignominious retreat and using, or threatening to use, "mini-nukes."
Pentagon opposition was confirmed in a July 2007 commentary by former Bush adviser Michael Gerson, who noted the "fear of the military leadership" that Iran would have "escalation dominance" in any conflict with the U.S.
Writing in the Washington Post last July, Gerson indicated that "escalation dominance" means, "in a broadened conflict, the Iranians could complicate our lives in Iraq and the region more than we complicate theirs."
The Joint Chiefs also have opposed the option of attacking Iran's nuclear sites, according to former Iran specialist at the National Security Council, Hillary Mann, who has close ties with senior Pentagon officials.
Mann confirmed that Adm. William Fallon joined the Joint Chiefs in strongly opposing such an attack, adding that he made his opposition known to the White House, as well.
The outspoken Fallon was forced to resign in March, and will be replaced as CENTCOM commander by Gen. David Petraeus -- apparently in September. Petraeus has already demonstrated his penchant to circumvent the chain of command in order to do Cheney's bidding (by making false claims about Iranian weaponry in Iraq, for example).
In sum, a perfect storm seems to be gathering in late summer or early fall.
Controlled Media
The experience of those of us whose job it was to analyze the controlled media of the Soviet Union and China for insights into Russian and Chinese intentions have been able to put that experience to good use in monitoring our own controlled media as they parrot the party line.
Suffice it to say that the FCM is already well embarked, a la Iraq, on its accustomed mission to provide stenographic services for the White House to indoctrinate Americans on the "threat" from Iran and prepare them for the planned air and missile attacks.
At least this time we are spared the "mushroom cloud" bugaboo. Neither Bush nor Cheney wish to call attention, even indirectly, to the fact that all 16 U.S. intelligence agencies concluded last November that Iran had stopped nuclear weapons-related work in 2003 and had not resumed it as of last year.
In a pre-FCM age, it would have been looked on as inopportune, at the least, to manufacture intelligence to justify another war hard on the heels of a congressional report that on Iraq the administration made significant claims not supported by the intelligence.
But (surprise, surprise!) the very damning Senate Intelligence Committee report got meager exposure in the media.
So far it has been a handful of senior military officers that have kept us from war with Iran. It hardly suffices to give them vocal encouragement, or to warn them that the post WW-II Nuremberg Tribunal ruled explicitly that "just-following-orders" is no defense when war crimes are involved.
And still less when the "supreme international crime" -- a war of aggression is involved.
Senior officers trying to slow the juggernaut lumbering along toward an attack on Iran have been scandalized watching what can only be described as unconscionable dereliction of duty in the House of Representatives, which the Constitution charges with the duty of impeaching a president, vice president or other senior official charged with high crimes and misdemeanors.
Where Are You, Conyers?
In 2005, before John Conyers became chair of the House Committee on the Judiciary, he introduced a bill to explore impeaching the president and was asked by Lewis Lapham of Harpers why he was for impeachment then. He replied:
"To take away the excuse that we didn't know. So that two, or four, or ten years from now, if somebody should ask, 'Where were you, Conyers, and where was the U.S. Congress?' when the Bush administration declared the Constitution inoperative...none of the company here present can plead ignorance or temporary insanity [or] say that 'somehow it escaped our notice.'"
In the three years since then, the train of abuses and usurpations has gotten longer and Conyers has become chair of the committee. Yet he has dawdled and dawdled, and has shown no appetite for impeachment.
On July 23, 2007, Conyers told Cindy Sheehan, Rev. Lennox Yearwood, and me that he would need 218 votes in the House and they were not there.
A week ago, 251 members of the House voted to refer to Conyers' committee the 35 Articles of Impeachment proposed by Congressman Dennis Kucinich.
Former Congresswoman Elizabeth Holtzman, who sat on Judiciary with Conyers when it voted out three articles of impeachment on President Richard Nixon, spoke out immediately: "The House should commence an impeachment inquiry forthwith."
Much of the work has been done. As Holtzman noted, Kucinich's Articles of Impeachment, together with the Senate report that on Iraq we were led to war based on false pretenses -- arguably the most serious charge -- go a long way toward jump-starting any additional investigative work Congress needs to do.
And seldom mentioned is the voluminous book published by Conyers himself, "Constitution in Crisis," containing a wealth of relevant detail on the crimes of the current executive.
Conyers' complaint that there is not enough time is a dog that won't hunt, as Lyndon Johnson would say.
How can Conyers say this one day, and on the next say that if Bush attacks Iran, well then, the House may move toward impeachment.
Afraid of the Media?
During the meeting last July with Cindy Sheehan, Rev. Yearwood and me, and during an interview in December on "Democracy Now," Conyers was surprisingly candid in expressing his fear of Fox News and how it could paint Democrats as divisive if they pursued impeachment.
Ironically, this time it is Fox and the rest of the FCM that is afraid -- witness their virtual silence on Kucinich's very damning 35 Articles of Impeachment.
The only way to encourage constructive media attention would be for Conyers to act. The FCM could be expected to fulminate against that, but they could not afford to ignore impeachment, as they are able to ignore other unpleasant things- - like preparations for another "war of choice."
I would argue that perhaps the most effective way to prevent air and missile attacks on Iran and a wider Middle East war is to proceed as Elizabeth Holtzman urges -- with impeachment "forthwith."
Does Conyers not owe at least that much encouragement to those courageous officers who have stood up to Cheney in trying to prevent wider war and catastrophe in the Middle East?
Scott McClellan has been quite clear in reminding us that once the president decided to invade Iraq, he was not going to let anything stop him. There is ample evidence that Bush has taken a similar decision with respect to Iran -- with Olmert as his chief counsel, no less.
It is getting late, but this is due largely to Conyers' own dithering. Now, to his credit, Dennis Kucinich has forced the issue with 35 well-drafted Articles of Impeachment.
What the country needs is the young John Conyers back. Not the one now surrounded by fancy lawyers and held in check by the House leaders.
In October 1974, after he and the even younger Elizabeth Holtzman faced up to their duty on House Judiciary and voted out three Articles of Impeachment on President Richard Nixon, Conyers wrote this:
"This inquiry was forced on us by an accumulation of disclosures which, finally and after unnecessary delays, could no longer be ignored...Impeachment is difficult and it is painful, but the courage to do what must be done is the price of remaining free."
Someone needs to ask John Conyers if he still believes that; and, if he does, he must summon the courage to "do what must be done."

Show AllAll the traffic signals are green lights. And, thanks to the Democrats, those green lights apply to POTUS as well as to Israel. Any significant Congressional inhibitions were eliminated when House Speaker Nancy Pelosi removed a section from a bill passed by Congress which would have barred the U.S. from going to war with Iran without a congressional vote, claiming she did so at the behest of the leadership of Israel and AIPAC.
I'll anticipate DD's contribution by reminding everyone to be sure to vote for the Dems in the coming election. They won't do anything you want to get your vote, but you have their vague promise that they just might be persuaded to represent your interests after you've already given them the only thing they want — assuming WW3 doesn't intervene, that is. Good luck.

This all reminds me of a movie in the 60's called Failsafe, with Henry Fonda as the president. No matter what the two heads of state did, it all boiled down to the guy flying the plane with the bomb. Same here.
At some point our soldiers need to stop and think about what they might soon be asked to do. And then just say no.
George W. Bush has spent his last full year in office doing exactly what he spent his last seven full years in office – vetoing most all of domestic policies bills ending up on his desk from Democratically-held houses while back-door-planning new and creative ways to attack Iran.
Bush's recent "tours" of the Middle East and Europe have been part of his last-ditch effort to take Iran on. And his recent stop in Israel has finally provided a way for the Bush-Cheney attack on Iran to take place – with Israel "initiating" the attack followed by Bush saying that "Our close ally has decided that attacking Iran was important so the United States will fully support Israel's decision and join in on the fight. Game On."
Another Inconvenient Truth in the making, I'm afraid.
Undoubtedly, Bush's recent tour of Europe went beyond a simple inquisition into how much diplomatic pressure Europe would provide in Bush's public desire to place further sanctions on Iran for refusing to stop their nuclear ambitions – which have not been proven to be anything other than for supplying power for the country.
Bush undoubtedly clued the U.S.'s European allies with his private desire to take Iran out – with Israel providing the initial salvo.
This month, Israel finished a series of "war games" in the Eastern Mediterranean – with warplanes and other forms of aircraft utilized in simulated warfare. Israel has not confirmed that the activity was a prologue to a military confrontation, but it did not deny it either.
In May, 2006, Bush visited Israel and his partner in crime – Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. Together, they publicly discussed the possibility of militarily confronting Iran on their assertions and insistence that Iran's nuclear ambitions were more than peaceful. It happened again in May/June 2008.
Two Fridays ago, Israeli Transport Minister Shaul Mofaz told an Israeli newspaper that an attack on Iran seemed "unavoidable".
A simple equation – 1+1=WWIII.
Thus, Bush will finally be able to give the United States his ultimate "gift" – the war to end not only all wars but all economies and our lives as we have come to know and love them.
AND EITHER...
Bu$h will invoke the presidential order allowing him to "postpone" the election and remain in power,
OR...
They will be confident that the American citizenry will be so frightened they will elect McBu$h.
If McCain's VP candidate is someone acceptable to them, I might expect the latter. If not, Welcome to Amerika.

Bomb, Bomb, Bomb....Bomb, Bomb Iran!
KaneJeeves June 20th, 2008 1:07 pm : "This all reminds me of a movie in the 60's called Failsafe, with Henry Fonda as the president."
This reminds me, KaneJeeves, of another Fonda movie "12 Angry Men". Who in America is going to play the lead role, standing up for what is right, because it is right?
In "Failsafe", the leaders were responsible people, filled with anguish over the dilemma they faced. Does Mr. "life is good" Bush seem to be troubled by anything, to you?
Mr. Bush should have the decency to resign. Short of that, he should be removed. After that, He should be prosecuted for murder.
According to George, "Laura and I are having the time of our lives".
What's to stop us? Sure as hell not moral principles.
The scary part is this: who thinks Iran isn't well-prepared for the coming attacks, after a couple of years of overt threats, five years of studying US Military operations, and - oh, right - complete loyalty of most of the Iraqi "government" and major Mullahs and militias? Hell, we've even given them a ballpark date for f**ks sake...
Not to mention all the triggers Tehran can pull - Afghanistan, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, etc. Or their positive relations with Russia and China and such.
Basically, "we're" surrounded, undermanned, war-weary, and we've telegraphed "our" plan in detail.
As they say in the movies: this can't go well.
All very good points, frank1569 but don't forget the experience the Iranians have had with the American air and land raids over the past years. I don't know how old you are but perhaps you remember, the Vietnam occupation expanded in a similar way into Cambodia with massive attacks over the border, years before the US leadership admitted to it.
Had the Democrats done their job and luanched impeachment proceedings, this would never be an issue. Thanks to their incompetence, corruption, daddy knows best attitude, any bombing campaign will change the scope and nature of our involvement in the region for the next hundred years. Apparently, McCain's statement will be prophetic and all thanks to the spineless wimps running the Democratic Party.
1. McGovern's central point: "I would argue that perhaps the most effective way to prevent air and missile attacks on Iran and a wider Middle East war is to proceed as Elizabeth Holtzman urges — with impeachment 'forthwith.'" Amen. We should all take this with utmost seriousness, and speak out now.
2. Everything else we are working on and hold dear - the Obama campaign (or Nader or McKinney), civil liberties, the environment, education, health care reform, global hunger, the lives of our children, everything - is at stake in preventing war with Iran. So speak out now!
3. The drumbeat for war has been going on so long and is being so steadily supported by the corporate media that peoples' minds - including our own - have grown numb to the danger and open to the lies. If not around Impeachment, how else can we rally the people to stop this Administration? So speak out on impeachment now!
Call your Congressperson and ask them to co-sponsor. Call Conyers and demand that he move this forward. Call or email other members of the judiciary committee. Probe for any newspaper, newsletter or blog in your city, town or community that will print your letter. Organize to get your town or city council to pass a resolution for impeachment!
4. The hour is very late. We need to play to win, but we also need to be thinking and talking about how to keep our communication lines open if the unthinkable happens and our access to the news- or even to each other - through the Internet is switched off. How many people could you reach with a news bulletin by Internet? Who could you reach using hand delivery of hard copy? How do we keep track of each other so that we aren't each facing this alone?
Coming soon: newschain.org. Stay tuned.
So...?
"Impeachment is difficult and it is painful, but the courage to do what must be done is the price of remaining free." - John Coyers
So Coyers and the rest of the Dumbocrats either have no courage, or are not interested in remaining free....take your pick..
It's not just the cowards in Congress who fear putting it all on the line. Why wont they do it?
Ive been wondering the same thing about all *power progressives*. This is Crunch Time, Final Exam Time for the human race - why arent they putting their vast fortunes on the line in a truly revolutionary fashion?
If these power progressives networked and pooled their wealth and their access to global media platforms, they could challenge the regressive elites and blow their cover-ups to pieces in front of the whole world.
They could create and distribute feature-film level exposes that would make Moore's Farenheit 911 look like a ten year old Girl Scout's home movie.
They could fund a third party, pour millions into alternative media to counter the Regressive Media Noise Machine, create legal defense funds for whistleblowers in the government, fund huge marches on Washington…etcetc
Meanwhile millions of progressives struggle, broke, to pay the bills, using whatever spare time they have to just basically stay informed about what the insane regressive elites are getting away with next, with maybe a little spare time left to come to a website like this one and talk about The Situation….while nothing ever changes.
The wealthy elites are going to scratch each others backs and prepare to inherit the earth after The Great Collapse, coming to a planet near you. How many times do you have to see Pelosi sell out and Bono and the Dalai Lama hang out with Bush (and refuse to criticize the slaughter in Iraq!) to finally realize that we, the people are screwed, all the heroes are dead and we are on our own?
With the destruction of the Iraqi society Iran's position of power in the Middle East has been greatly increased, the purpose of an attack on Iran is to destroy the Iranian society to prop up the Bush friendly Saudi royals as the most important Islamic political power in the Middle East. Iran has over one thousand anti-ship cruise missiles and commands the Straits of Hormuz and therefore 25% of the world's crude oil. The only tactic that I know of that could counter these missiles would be to carpet nuke an area the size of the state of Kansas along Iran's Persian Gulf shore. Since the only way this attack can be successful is to use nuclear weapons in a first strike against Iran's arsenal of anti-ship missiles I expect that many Iranian cities will also be hit with the so called tactical nukes which are up to 10 times more powerful than those used against Japan in W.W.II
It is probable that if a nuclear attack on Iran is ordered that both Russia and China's nuclear arsenals will also be attacked as some neoconservatives believe that the United States has achieved Nuclear Primacy, the ability to take out the nuclear missiles of Russia and China with a nuclear first strike. Here's an article from the neoconservative Council on Foreign Affairs on the topic;
http://tinyurl.com/rq3sc
Should the U.S. attack Russia, China and Iran it's possible that a few Russian missiles would be launched against American cities providing the excuse for Bush to declare a national emergency, cancel elections, implement fascism, martial law and fill up the Halliburton camps with anybody that publicly objected.
I disagree a little bit with Ray's thinking that an attack on Iran would be mostly by the Air Force, Iraq and the other Gulf States have all said that U.S. bases on their land can not be used to attack Iran and Diego Garcia is a long way from Iran. Surly no Aircraft commander would be dumb enough to launch an attack from the bathtub sized Persian Gulf so an attack from the Arabian Sea means that American aircraft would be over hostile territory for over 1,800 miles on an attack on Tehran. Which is another reason to think the first wave of an attack on Iran would be with ballistic missiles tipped with nuclear weapons.
The aircraft carrier Abe Lincoln is now in the Persian Gulf with the Ronald Reagan sailing toward the Middle East. The Teddy Roosevelt and Stennis look like they may be available soon and the George Washington is in route to Japan to replace the Kitty Hawk (America's oldest and last conventional carrier [non-nuclear]). If three or more carriers are deployed to the Middle East the attack on Iran will follow soon thereafter.
Madhoosier, a relatively detailed scenario you have sketched out. What do you think would happen on day two, three, four etc?
As I've said before, May God help us All!
There's no end to this nightmare.
Does the impeachment initiative include Cheney? If not, then Cheney will become president, and an attack on Iran will be, if anything, even more certain.

That'll be 'who' - stopping 'em, that is; and who is: "Putin".
I feel helpless and can only say, Goddamn Bush and all those who voted for him.
Is McGovern being unduly alarmist here? Or... why do I have the gutchurning feeling that one demonic part of an essentially benevolent America makes it truly the most blood-addicted nation to ever occupy a portion of god's good green earth? And it's always about some other 'rogue' nation's blood. Please, someone assure me this article is only bluster, summoning the bogeyman of [yet another] war, in the hope that saner heads in Washington will prevail...?
What's to stop us?
How about COMMON SE$NSE?
We don't understand the people of Iran, just as we didn't know the Iraqis.
Bombing them would be as if we are bombing ourselves.
It sure is getting tiresome hearing all the reports of how Bush lied and twisted facts and cursed and disregarded the constitution.
Why even mention it anymore ?
The people have no control over the government,
which is not only dictating to the American people but trying to control the world.
jlocke123,
The neocon endgame for the control of the world and the world's resources almost by definition involves mass genocide, everybody remembers the PNAC call for a "New Pearl Harbor" in "Rebuilding America's Defenses" but that same document also called for the development of a new class of more "user friendly" nuclear weapons, the development of racially specific biological or chemical agents and anticipates using food as a weapon.
The neocons think they can peer into the future and reshape society to their advantage, never mind that both Iraq and Afghanistan have turned into quagmires and America's armed forces are on the brink of being used up (another reason for the use of nukes).
In the issue of "Foreign Affairs" a month or two later than the "Nuclear Primacy" article some pretty big holes were shot in the doctrine and an Air Force bigwig deigned that Nuclear Primacy was an American objective.
As to what happens on a day by day basis, your guess is as good as mine, once the nukes start popping off it's not very long till chaos theory rears its ugly head.
(In the event that America's "Nuclear Primacy" wasn't as dominate as the Neocons believe a couple of hundred American cities could join New Orleans plight.)
This is not a test folks. What Ray is saying is the real deal. And he is not the only one sounding the alarm.
AND, there is a bill in the House right now (HCON Resolution 362) This resolution demands that President Bush "initiate an international effort" to impose a land, sea, and air blockade on Iran to prevent it from importing gasoline and to inspect all cargo entering or leaving Iran. Such a blockade imposed without United Nations authority (which the resolution does not call for) would be seen as an act of war. Congressional sources say the House could vote on the resolution, H.Con.Res. 362, as early as next week. Go here to fight this resolution:

There will be no impeachment hearings because they will expose too many Republicans and Democrats who are involved with nuclear armaments and narcotics sales and distribution on the black market. Turkey is the point of contact and center of distribution. From there they go to Israel, North Korea, Syria, Iran, Russia, and other countries. If any of you have not read or heard about this, I strongly urge you to read this transcript from an interview with Sibel Edmonds. Here is the title and link:

kinghenry, you must be very young, or have not done your homework if you're calling the U.S. essentially benevolent. We're not even close to it, just been lied to over and over and over again. Start here for a quick history lesson:

damien, you get a gold star for the day for being absolutely correct about the people having no control over the government. And, I'm going to go a step further and say that our Congress has no control over our government either.
Then, who has control? Not only the multi-national corporations and the MSM, but the Bilderberg group, the CFR, the Trilateral Commission, the CIA, the Pentagon, the Israeli Mossad, the French SAVAK, the British MI5, the Italian Secret Service, and all the "other" secret governments that fly under the radar. Here's a one hour presentation on the hold of the CIA by Peter Dale Scott:
Two governments: The public and the deep

Not only that, but credible authors wrote about the dire state of the U.S. more than 40 years ago and no body was listening then either. Sorry folks, we're too far down the rabbit hole. If we can't even get our liar president and his deceitful cabal impeached, then I don't know what hope there is for our beloved republic.
motamanx, just because you and I and a whole lot of other patriots have enough common sense to support diplomacy, instead of a war in Iran, what on earth gives you the idea that there's ANY in the entire Bush administration? Have you witnessed any such thing since he was crowned king in 2000? Me neither!
The weird thing is the sense of invincibility they have. They've convinced themselves they are winning in Iraq, when they aren't. And they've convinced themselves they can win against Iran. And, as someone who reads history, that can be a very bad sign. There's not shortage of armies that have marched off to battle thinking they were invincible, only to lose.
Since our army is bogged down over its head in Iraq, the geniuses have convinced themselves that they can limit Iran to an air war. Sure, we can win an air war. But, this is the mistake they made going into Iraq. War does not always stay within the limits you set for it. Instead your opponent can act outside those limits. Thus, we'll win the air war over Iran the same way we won the march to Baghdad.
Their overcockiness scares the crap out of me.
I guess we'll hear that this one was all about oil, too.
Ah Samson, Big Oil is already moving into Iraq. U.S. military bases already pock the country. Surely, given this success, the thinking is that attacking Iran will give America yet another oil supply.
But isn't oil supposed to be a no-no?
See Exercise in Madness on my blog. You'll wish you hadn't!

Derail WWIII, Save the U.S. Constitution, Bring our troops home............... ASAP
IMPEACH both Bush and Cheney.........IMMEDIATELY !!!!!!!!!

Nothing will stop Us. But once we do bomb Iran then the following reactions are almost to occur:
1. Dedicated and expanded attacks on the US Military in Iraq.
2. Increasing attacks against the US military and NATO forces in Afghanistan.
3. Increasing attacks against US personnel and US embassies in the Middle East.
4. Definite counterattacks against Israel that may include Hezballa and Hamas.
5. Oil per barrel price will automatically jump to $200/300 each.
The question is not whats to stop us? The question is what would the US gain from bombing Iran? Given the lies promoted and propagandized by the zionist neocons in the cakewalk into Iraq and the costs so far of 3/4 trillion another cakewalk into Iran can only result in doubling the costs in dollars and worse in human lives. If this administration is at the beck and call of Israel and AIPAC THEN IT IS NO LONGER THE GOVERNMENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA but the agent of a foreign entity.
For every action there is not just one reaction but several. In the case of bombing Iran the US will have several open Pandoras boxes. And again Pogo's adage comes full circle.
A lot of lives will be saved, and the earth saved a lot of evil, if the Mr Bush and Mr Cheney are immediately arrested and placed in confinement in padded cells. A slow impeachment process will only get underway much too late, after major damage is done, and as almost of the US congress is guilty of aiding and abetting the criminal and insane behavior, they can hardly be expected to institute timely proceedings anyway. Is there one moral person left in the US who can turn back the tide of its depraved evil? If not, may the fates make these men and their nation suffer. Let every citizen of the world bend their will to depriving the US of its fruits of evil.
yknot, what are the alternatives?
Here is what will happen if Iran is not stopped (Diplomatically or militarily)
1) 13 other Middle Eastern countries (Such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Syria, Turkey... will develop nuclear capability as a counter measure to Iran. Triggering a nuclear arms race.
2) Risk of a nuclear exchange between Israel and Iran which will result in tens of millions death, radiation, and climate change.
3) Even if 2) will not occurs, there'll be increase in terrorist activity by Iranian proxies. (Such as Hizbollah, Islamic Jihad and Hamas) With the risk of nuclear terror.
The best case scenario to this crises is if Iran is stopped Diplomatically.
I keep saying:
If this goes ahead, and the US/Israel attack Iran, the Straights of Hormuz will become a shooting gallery composed of oil tankers and wallowing US aircraft carriers.
The Middle East will explode in a orgy of anti-US/Israel suicide bombings, the ruling AlSaud dynasty in Saudi Arabia will be swept aside, pipelines will be severed, the US dollar will be dropped like a rabid rat, fuel and food prices worldwide will head for low earth orbit, food and fuel shortages will spread through Europe and arrive in North America. Rioting WILL spread.
And the Bush Junta, and those 'conservative' governments aligned with them already have their ducks in a row to control both information and their populations. Why do you think the US gave those no bid contracts to Halliburton/ KBR to build the 'detention facilities' across the US, and publicly unveiled the Microwave Area Denial System on 'Sixty minutes' being used against US Army personnel posing as 'peace protesters'.
The dark times are not coming. Twilight has already fallen, and soon it will be midnight.
Don't forget Russia's support of Iran. I fear an attack by us may not end at Tehran like we think.
Also... those shipments of Russian Sunburn Missiles to Iran are not the sort of thing that our Navy is going to be able to sail away from.
There is an urgency to read this book ASAP. It is a great read and the incontrovertible legal arguments for prosecution are here, given by the most successful prosecutor in the nation. There is no statute of limitations for murder.
Do not let Obama pardon Bush, Cheney, Condo and the rest of the cabal. They need to be made examples of to stop the madness.
"The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder" by Vincent Bugliosi".
We need prosecutors to follow up on this. Please pass this along.
You are all missing the point here. The real story is that (remember), God installed Bush as president to bring about the Apocalyse and the End Times. Then we will not have to worry about $4 gas and expensive food costs. All of the Born Agains including Bush will be in the drivers seat, and the rest of us will have some new hot issues to worry about.
There is no sense in going over these technicalities, as the future is already determined thanks to our Religious Right who has God on their side and are just playing out the inevitable.
We other uninformed people have our Congress to depend on to keep things working so our chances are a little weak or even nonexistant.
The only ones who might be able to stop the idiots at the top are WE THE PEOPLE! This nation is skating on thin ice, and we can't let the maniacs in the Administration take up headlong into their planned military attack in Iran!
Impeachment is too slow.
If the U.S. were to attack any country, it would be accompanied by a huge propaganda outpouring about how evil and dangerous the enemy-of-the-day is, and how brave are our military etc etc. Big outpouring of grief for the one or two U.S. pilots that are shot down while ignoring thousands of Iranian civilian deaths etc etc. The media will spend 24/7 on the usual "patriotic" BS. Bush will make various stirring speeches about defending freedom and his popularity will jump to at least 60%. Even higher when Iran unveils its first retaliation, which of course will be spun by U.S. media as proof of how aggressive and evil Iran was all along.
In this climate of ultra-patriotism, of rally-around-the-flag because "we're at war", Conyers expects us to believe that he will say "impeach"? This would be like trying to impeach right after 9-11 when Bush's popularity was 90%.
Either Conyers is a total fool, or he thinks we are. Or is there another explanation? Only one I can think of: someone made it really clear to Conyers that if he moves forward on impeachment he'll never see his family alive again. Can anyone offer up another plausible explanation for Conyers' behavior?

Letto: "The best case scenario to this crises is if Iran is stopped Diplomatically."
Stopped from what, exactly? Without going into the technicalities of how tricky it is to make nuclear weapons, thus making it highly improbable that they are, my own opinion is that Iran would be mad if they did not defend themselves.
Not that I look forward to the prospect of yet another country possessing nuclear weapons, but if you look who has got them (Pakistan, India, Israel, Russia, anyone else I missed?) still the only country that has used them is the USA, and I still think the US is right at the top of the list in order of likelihood of use -- that is ignoring the DU that has been used.
Personally, I believe it is Bu$hco that needs to be stopped.
danick, I totally agree with you on your last plausible explanation for Conyer's behavior regarding impeachment. Well, I agree with everything else in your post, especially the part about "the enemy of the day". It's a pecking order and after we've verbally hacked the Muslim's to death there will be some other "evil" lurking somewhere (we'll find them or make them up again).
Think about how many people have been offed by our government/CIA in our 200+ years. Ya think they all happened by accident or suicide? Think again. Let's see, who has it been lately? Wellstone? DC madam? Vince Foster? Six marines involved in the Minot to Barksdale nuclear weapons incident last August? Who am I missing here?
Letto said "The best case scenario to this crises is if Iran is stopped Diplomatically."
And here I thought this article was all about stopping the USA and/or Israel!
