Impeach Bush Now? Congressional Proceedings Would Help Prevent Another Mistaken War
United States Rep. John Conyers, the Detroit Democrat who chairs the House Judiciary Committee, has a rendezvous with destiny. He is uniquely placed to thrust a rod through the wheels of a White House juggernaut to war with Iran by commencing impeachment proceedings against President George W. Bush.
A move to impeach would bolster the resistance to Bush among our senior military leaders who know that attacking Iran at this time would be the strategic equivalent of the marches into Russia by Napoleon and Hitler.
Since Conyers took the helm of Judiciary in January 2007, the train of abuses and usurpations by the Bush administration has gotten even longer. But oddly, Conyers has lost his earlier appetite for impeachment and begun offering all manner of transparent excuses not to proceed. On July 23, 2007, for example, Conyers told Cindy Sheehan, the Rev. Lennox Yearwood and me that he would need 218 votes in the House, and vociferously claimed the votes were not there.
Well, they are now. Last week, 251 members of the House voted to refer to Conyers' committee the 35 Articles of Impeachment offered by U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio. Conyers should take them up.
When bombs are falling on Iran, it will be too late -- and our commander in chief is likely to give that order within the next couple of months. As former White House press secretary Scott McClellan reminds us, when the president sets his mind on something, he is not going to let anything stop him.
What seems to be driving Bush comes through best when he ad-libs at press conferences. On June 10, in Slovenia, he was asked about the intensifying debate in Israel about a military option against the nuclear installations in Iran. Bush responded: "If you go to Israel and listen carefully, you'll hear the urgency in their voice."
What's so urgent? Israel's ambassador to the United States, speaking at an American Jewish Committee luncheon last Oct. 22, said the Iranians must not be permitted to conclude that, "come January '09 (after Bush leaves office), they have it their own way."
Vice President Dick Cheney last summer pushed for air strikes on Revolutionary Guards bases in Iran, but was thwarted by the Joint Chiefs of Staff, according to J. Scott Carpenter, a senior State Department official working on the Middle East at the time.
The Joint Chiefs also have strongly opposed attacking Iran's nuclear sites, according to a former Iran specialist at the National Security Council, Hillary Mann, who has wide contacts among senior Pentagon officials. Mann reports that Admiral William Fallon, the former CENTCOM commander, joined the Joint Chiefs in opposing such an attack and made his views known to the White House. Fallon was forced to resign in March and will be replaced as CENTCOM commander by Gen. David Petraeus.
A "political general," Petraeus has already demonstrated his willingness to do Cheney's bidding -- by, for example, making demonstrably false claims about Iranian weaponry in Iraq. Nonetheless, the U.S. military in Baghdad apparently remains under orders to blame any serious violence on "special groups" -- code for those said to be supported by Iran.
Before the smoke had cleared after Tuesday's bombing in Baghdad that left at least 63 dead and 78 wounded, U.S. spokesman Lt. Col. Steven Stover announced that the U.S. command believed one of those "special groups" was behind the bombing.
The corporate media are already launched in their pre-attack mode, providing stenographic services for the White House to indoctrinate Americans on a synthetic "threat" from Iran. So far, though, we have been spared the "mushroom cloud" imagery. Neither Bush nor Cheney want to risk drawing attention to the fact that all 16 U.S. intelligence agencies concluded last November that Iran stopped nuclear weapons-related work in 2003 and has not restarted it.
Conyers may say there's not enough time to begin impeachment, with only seven months left to this administration. But how could Conyers say this one day, and on the next say that if Bush attacks Iran, well then the House may move toward impeachment? His nonchalance regarding what an attack on Iran would mean is mind-boggling. You impeach the scoundrels before they start another war.
At a similarly critical juncture in our nation's history, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was characteristically direct: "There is such a thing as being too late. ... Life often leaves us standing bare, naked, and dejected with lost opportunity. ... Over the bleached bones of numerous civilizations are written the pathetic words: 'Too late.'"

Show AllImpeachment? It's a little too little, and too late now. Today, it's not defending the country, but merely a partisan election ploy by the DP. The Democratic Party bosses are collaborators with the Republicans in what we got, and not an opposition.
The best "impeachment" of Bush and Cheney is the election of a Democratic President and Congress that can actually repudiate and undo many of the Bush policies in short order upon taking office.
The DUMB "impeachment" is Kucinich supporters flailing wildly in the wind for the Democrats to first put on and lose a trial in the Senate and then lose an historic election as a direct consequence. Has anyone noticed that leader Dennis Kucinich HIMSELF is far smarter than this?
I generally agree with Mr. McGovern. Bush must be held accountable and NOW!
The Dems appear to be nearly as complicit with Bush's war crimes as the Repubs.

Daniel David states "The DUMB "impeachment" is Kucinich supporters flailing wildly in the wind for the Democrats to first put on and lose a trial in the Senate and then lose an historic election as a direct consequence."
Strange. The republicans did pretty well in 2000 after their idiotic attempt to convict Bill Clinton.
The Dems' prospects in November would not be tarnished by an impeachment effort especially with so much evidence against the incumbents.
jj
Taking impeachment off the table by Dem leadership. Do you think the Dems are just as guilty?
Hmmmmm....
Impeachment may not make a big difference now, and the chances of it actually happening are near 0, but without it the whole US government convicts itself of complicity in the crimes of the executive branch.
When pigs fly.
Daniel David: What happens when the NEXT president (whoever it may end up being) gets into office? What is to stop them from moving the dictatorial powers of W even further? That is why it is so vitally important to bring W and Cheney up for impeachment. Not only that, but it will occupy their time so that they CAN'T invade yet another sovereign country that poses no threat to our security.
That the dems are showing right now is a complete lack of respect for the very document they promised to defend and protect. They are showing, with the "leadership" of the worst speaker in history, that the constitution and the rule of law mean NOTHING to this country anymore.
Not holding the president and vice president accountable for their actions tells the world that America is no longer. Not just a shell of it's former self, but that it truly means and stands for nothing. And it's a signal to the next president that he can live by Nixon's mantra "if the president does it, it's not illegal". And that came directly out of the foul mouth of Dick Cheney, who has resurfaced with yet another idiot to control in W. We MUST hold them accountable. When the next president comes along, it may be far too late to undo the dameage these miscreant, traitorous scum have done, not only to us, but to the rest of the world, too.
BTW, there has NEVER been a party that impeached and lost the next election. In fact, it's been just the opposite. The dems won after the near impeachment of Nixon, the repubs won after their foolish impeachment of Clinton, and in fact, it's been that way after EVERY attempted impeachement that came to the public's attention.
Once again, Pelosi is showing that she understands nothing about the country's history. And much to our detriment.
Impeach? Absolutely! But out here in rural
Michigan, everybody I've met over the last year
says "Arrest, try and convict!" . . . and they don't mince on what the punishment should be.
It is all very sad . . . and tragic . . . but no less so than the over million, mostly innocent people, including those in our military, who have been killed as the direct result of LIES from the top. Those who lied and caused the deaths of so many must pay the price else American justice means nothing.
I wonder if as many Americans wept at the death of a single soldier or civilian in Iraq as they weep for Bush enabler, Tim Russet.
Trying to debate with DD is pointless. It just results in repetition of the same baseless assertion about what voting for Dems can/might/should accomplish. It's a broken record or a no-trick pony; take your pick.
Like I said, has anyone noticed that even Dennis Kucinich is smarter than to pursue this past the "introduce and table to committee" stage?
The charges are "out there" for all to see and talk about.
That's all that is needed, and all that can bear any good fruit. The rest is about winning the election of the NEXT government.
The generals and the enlisted people can so NO! Are you willing to send your child into a winless situation so you won't be called names? To send you child to death/dismemberment/mental disease so you won't be called unpatriotic by insane or misinformed people whose interests in no way model yours? "Sticks 'nd stones will break my bones, but names will never hurt me...unless you allow them to."
As one of our esteemed citizens said many years ago: "Just Say NO!"
God has no Dog in this fight, because all of the Dogs are his.

I know that I am hopelessly delusional. I know what I am about to write is way crazy, but I plod onward in my dreamy reality. . .
In the world I would like to live in, our elected leaders would routinely do things, even difficult things, because it is the right thing to do, disregarding elections and political strategizing and spin.
The reason Congress ought to impeach this president is because he has done lots of bad things, broken laws, overridden the Constitution, and, in general, badly damaged our country.
The reason Congress should impeach George W. Bush is because it is the right thing to do.
Surely it is right to stand up and say "this guy has behaved illegally".
Like I said, call me crazy. I know I am crazy. I keep expecting our elected representatives to act like statesmen, to 'take the lead', to act with public courage, to do things just because they are the right thing to do.
dream on
Sorry, but it's just not going to happen. When Smedley Butler (USMC) said that war is a racket he didn't go nearly far enough. The entire governing apparatus has become a racket, not just its military attachment. They simply cannot afford the risk of exposure that an impeachment process would involve. This antiwar.com article provides a furtive glimpse of just some of the tangled web spun by both halves of the "two-party" facade.
The Do Nothing Democrats have proven over the last year and a half that they have absolutely NO intention of defending the US Constitution from domestic enemies. Why anyone would continue to vote for them is beyond me.
Arvy,
Thanks for posting the link. I read the transcript yesterday and found it quite telling. I hope everyone else reads it.
I have written this elsewhere, but. . .If an October surprise does happen the blowback from that will be tremendous. David Sirota has it about right in his book The Uprising. There is a seething resentment and much pent up anger afoot in this country. If this administration tries to pull off some kind of political coup, most everyone I know in my neck of the woods is ready to step into the streets with dry powder . The Democrats have proven hopeless in defending the Constitution. It will be time for the people to gather and fight.
Mr. David,
Bush is a vile criminal. Justice CRIES OUT that he be tried and executed for mass morder. This will only happen through impeachment, since only impeachment will make him immune from from an Obama presidential pardon.
You and your beloved Democrats are accomplices to Bush's capital crimes, who is following a long tradition of presidential murder -Democrat and Republican, from Chile to Guatamala, Iraq, to Iran to Vietnam, to Indonesia going back for 60 years.
Mr David,
And, what you are proposing is a president and government that lies and misrepresents itself to get elected!
Is it cathartic to TALK of justice?
Without action.
That's as good as it gets.
Sickening really.
Screw impeachment - it's time to arrest the domestic enemies of The United States Constitution presently using Our White House as a base for their anti-American agenda.
18 U.S.C. §3052: FBI agents are empowered to "serve warrants and subpoenas issued under the authority of the United States and make arrests without warrant for any offense against the United States committed in their presence, or for any felony cognizable under the laws of the United States if they have reasonable grounds to believe that the person to be arrested has committed or is committing such felony."
"At a 1998 Senate hearing on the subject chaired by John Ashcroft, professors Freedman and Turley said the president could be criminally indicted and prosecuted..."
FISA specifically states that even a sitting President can be indicted for violating FISA. Bush has lied about violating FISA, then publicly confessed to violating FISA, then publicly bragged about his intention to continue violating FISA.
After a sealed indictment is procured, a rouge band of US Marshalls, Secret Service Agents and Navy Seals decide to apprehend Constitutional enemies Bush and Cheney and whisk them off to an undisclosed location for a bit of "enhanced interrogation." Both are such total pussies, they'll squeal on the rest of their criminal gang like stuck little piggies in half-a-heartbeat. Then we send out the posse and round up the rest of the war criminals, sending a clear message to the world that America is on the path to true recovery.
We then publicly nail a few of the scumbags, like Rove and Feith and Addington and Yoo and Fredo and Rummy, and allow the rest to plead-out under the condition that they never, ever, show their faces in public again, unless it's a trip to the grocery store.
From then on, government officials will finally understand that there are harsh consequences for illegal actions, and most will clean up their acts.
"all 16 U.S. intelligence agencies concluded last November that Iran stopped nuclear weapons-related work in 2003 and has not restarted it."
And the IAEC concluded their is no weapons program.
And as a signatory to the Anti Nuclear Proliferation Treaty, Iran is within its treaty rights to develop civilian nuclear power.
Any attack on Iran would be ANOTHER blatant violation of the UN Charter, and numerous other treaties by the USA.
But that is NOTHING to this criminal excuse for a US Executive.
Attacking Iran would be the equivelent of the Attack on Pearl Harbor, or even 9/11. It would be a declaration of total war.
Iran would be well within their rigfts to to ANYTHING in response in self defence.
Including attacks (conventional or otherwise)on US forces in Iraq, on Israel and in the USA.
and they would be in the RIGHT in the eyes of the world and under international law.
And the USA would add to their resume of criminality .
Its funny to see Daniel Davids arguments defending democrats losing effectiveness.
I used to see a bit of logic in his posts. Now, it's more of hysterics than anything else.
Quite humorous.
WJM, thank you for your excellent posts. What was it George Bush said, that the "Constitution is just a god damn piece of paper?" That goes to show you how much respect this criminal has for the American system. He and his criminal cabal need to be held accountable for the many crimes they've committed.
The leadership in America is hell bent on it's destruction and nothing short of a civil war or mega disaster will stop them. The choice they seem to have given us is to fight or kiss our arce goodbye.
What did Yeats say?
"the best lack all conviction,
while the worst are filled with passionate intensity."
Hell, if you read The Old Testament you'll "hear the urgency in their voice!"
Nothing will ever get done in Congress. As far as I am concerned ,they (Congress, Bush, Cheney, and all of the cronies) are all LIERS and CROOKS
Impeachment = serving notice that an inquiry is happening regarding the executive branch's misdeeds. Therefore, it is NEVER TOO LATE to impeach. Not even after Bush/Cheney leave the White House. Impeachment is not removal. It is the first step in bringing justice to bear. The U.S. Constitution DEMANDS that Congress does its obligation and proceed since the evidence is overwhelming and the articles of impeachment have been put into the record by Dennis Kucinich. Those members of the House, John Conyers, Nancy Pelosi, etc., who know Bush/Cheney are guilty and do not proceed with impeachment are abrogating their oath of office. Worse, they are knowing accomplices in malfeasance and war crimes. The next few months will determine whether this complicity puts the final nail in the coffin of the experiment in democracy that was the envy of the world. It is becoming apparent that only the people have the power to reverse this. Do they have the will? Do they care? Apparently not.
I agree that we need impeachment to send a loud clear message to future presidents and congresses that the abuse of the constitution will not be tolerated. I think the deafening silence of party Dems on this issue is them sniveling, "But I WANT to be king when it's my turn..."
Did anyone hear Vincent Bugliosi on Democracy Now talk about trying GWB for murder?
If the congress doesn't have the testicular fortitude to do the deed, that seems like another possible venue. Is the International Criminal court a last venue?
But I'd like to see Americans address this mess either through impeachment or trial. But the complicit congressional members need to be shaken too.
daniel david - an election does not bring another government.
to elect a democrat is not an impeachment - you really ought to think more before you speak...
why are you so against impeachment and why is impeachment "dumb" - you may not have noticed but there hasnt exactly been a republican monopoly on power over the last three or four decades - so what gives? explain yourself sir. do you really believe that there is no reason to bring justice to a war criminal? i mean, if all goes as it always has bush leaves power no matter what - it is really painful to see your constant argument for democrats at the expense of democracy, not that i think you have any influence, or power or that it even matters anyway due to the overwhleming nature of what confronts each and every live thing well beyond the rather narrow fate of the dearly departed USA... so i suppose i am just venting more than anything because your comments seem to be blind to the horrors and the need to redress and safegaurd against such happening again
John Conyers is simply a liar. Only a fool would believe anything he says concerning impeachment.
bush has been given walking papers by the Congress. There is no crime and no act he could commit that would warrant impeachment. The traitor at the gates, Nancy Pelosi has made sure of that. If bush attacks Iran, locks up American citizens, or wipes his butt with the Constitution he will remain unchallenged. So john Conyers 'talk of impeachment' is nothing but drool runing out of his mouth.
There is nothing the Republicans would like better than a Senate trial of Bush that publicly fails a conviction vote with the visual effect of exonerating him for everything he has done and aquitting him of all charges. Especially when they could easily gin up some coinciding "emergency" to shame the Democrats for "distracting" Bush and Cheney from defending the country. These "justice now" posts above simply do not look out past their authors' noses to see what will REALLY happen in an ill-advised spectacle when the jury (Senate) is pre-rigged with an inadequate number of votes to convict. IT WOULD BACKFIRE AND BACKLASH THE ELECTION TOO (you ninnies.)
BTW, in all the self-righteous bashing (of me), why is nobody addressing the fact that even Dennis Kucinich understands this and is acting accordingly?
Democratic leadership have been complicit colaborators w/the bush crime family in their torture and other war crimes. They do not want these facts to be revealed in the process of impeachment. By blocking impeachment these "leaders" have utterly failed to protect and defend the Constitution. They deserve to be tossed out of office in the next election. It is late, but never too late to impeach!
frank1569 @ 1:57 - no, we don't execute any of them, and we don't forbid any of them to appear in public. To the contrary! We tattoo lists of their crimes on their bodies, and REQUIRE them to appear in public, naked, for two hours every day for the rest of their miserable lives.
Execution is too good for them. Public humiliation is the best punishment for such people.
H Buchman said, "I wonder if as many Americans wept at the death of a single soldier or civilian in Iraq as they weep for Bush enabler, Tim Russet."
Really! Like most other people, I've had close family members, friends, children of friends - some quite young, and some very fine acquaintances pass away. Each of them was a precious human being, and most of them went "before their time." They all had contributions to make, and those gifts they might have given to the world have been lost. I know what it is like to lose a loved one, but I cannot imagine what it would be like to lose an entire way of life along with my children, my home, my livelihood, and many aspects of my culture because another country thought it would be expeditious to invade America. I cannot imagine what it would be like to be an Iraqi caught up in the violence.
It's been said that when a person kills one, he or she is called a murderer, but when a person kills many - as in a war - he or she is called a hero. It should not be this way, but there are some things in life that are so horrific, our minds cannot grasp them. It's somehow weirdly easier to mentally accept one million deaths than one single death. So we eulogize over a celebrity like Tim Russert, who probably was a nice enough man from all accounts, but was still a cheerleader for Bush's fiasco, while we completely ignore the babies, toddlers, young adolescents and other innocents who have been destroyed. Russert was complicit in the invasion and occupation of Iraq, however sincere.
I don't believe Bush or Cheney will be impeached or punished for their murderous ways, their promotion of torture, lies, or other crimes against humanity. But if there is any justice in the universe, they will meet the consequences of their actions in this life or another.
Daniel David is the only poster to make any sense. In case any of you are politically challenged and suffer from intellect disorder:
Barring any new discoveries or revelations President Bush will not be impeached now or ever. While he will face disgrace as one of the worst Presidents of all time he will never be tried or any of that other silly nonsense. Any by the way, all you so called lovers of our COnstitution- in this country and under our Constition Bush is not a criminal until he is tried and convicted by a court of law. Don't like it- move or at least stop pretending like you give a hoot for our Constitution.
A move to impeach with 0 chance of success will be unpopular with a public already mad at Congress for wasting too much time and not getting the peoples business done. The politicians and Daniel David understand this. It intrigues me that so many here have such stupendous arrogance as to call all those others idiots, etc. Pounding furiously on their keys in rightous narcisstic anger. You guys really are out of touch with reality- and sitting in your basements or whatever that's just fine- the profeessional politicians on the other hand have a duty and an obligation to work for change that can make a difference in the real world.
If you want to work for a progressive 3rd party than by all means get to it- I feel it would be a great thing. But until you have a chance to elect someone and make a difference you will just be helping to elect another Republican. As far as I'm concerned a vote for Nadar in 2000 was a vote for Bush, no differnce- and all those who helped elect him and kept Gore from office ought to rightly blame their own idiocy for the last 8 years.
Reality folks- the rest of the country isn't stupid, they just think your more extreme positions are, and this counters any attempt at real change.
There is no such thing as divine justice. This is a fairy tale conjured to keep the common people from acting on their outrage at injustice and taking matters into their own hands.
Our Founding Fathers weren't religious men (the leading ones, that is). So they wrote into the Constitution a simple and legal means to rectify the situation of an elected representative of the people who committed treason, bribery or other high crimes and misdemeanors. That is impeachment.
If they thought waiting for the next election would be enough, they wouldn't have put impeachment into the Constitution.
And, DD, honestly, do you really think just ennumerating the crimes of the Bush junta and letting people discuss them is going to stop the looting, murder and spying? That is ridiculous. Bush himself joked that one section of the economy of the US that is booming is books pointing out his failings. 70% of the people in this country know that Bush is a liar and an idiot. Now we want something done about it!
Too bad for the 2,000,000+ people in prison in this country that the prosecutors of ordinary Americans don't take the attitude that it's too much trouble to hold people accountable for their crimes.
Mr.McGovern evidently cannot escape his terminology - it is not a "mistaken war." It was intentional and an immoral invasion and destruction of an innocent nation. I had a word before "terminlogy" - are certain words [not vulgar] deleted by someone or something?

I GIVE UP...
The people in north eastern Wisconsin have got to be to most politcally stupid I have ever met.
I just attempted to explain the SCOTUS decison basically restoring Habeas Corpus to some co-workers. Without exception their eyes glazed over and they just started railing on me about how bad Obama is.
I have had it. Hear me Amerika. You stultified victims of this Fascist government are on your own. I have sounded the alarm, given you advice on how to prepare yourself for the coming crises and all I got was derison.
I am finished. No more participation on CD or anywhere. I am going to hoard my little stash of beans, rice, and water till someone comes and kills me for it. No more warning, no more advice, no more participation. I am done. Withdrawn consent, and withdrawn from society. Have fun kids.
Thank you, "clarity", for CLARITY and kind words. But be warned, saying anything here (ever) to agree with Daniel David is very unpopular with the clique of "mean girls" (or whatever this bunch).
I'd like to see a reporter ask just 3 simple questions regarding an attack on Iran. Mr. President, how would you prevent oil from skyrocketing even further than what it already has, thus officially plunging our economy into depression. How do you stop the Shiites in Iraq from siding with Iran,& tearing apart whatever modest achievements this administration claims to have accomplished. What's your plan, Mr. President should Russia, and or China decide to involve themselves in an Iranian conflict?
The Edmonds interview linked above and here is a pretty damning indictment of the Congressional Democrats and makes Daniel David's argument that a Democrat president and Congress will lead to substantive change patently false. Indeed, the interview confirms the continuity of policy and corruption over the past two administrations, and the threads that connect them back to the CIA's inception.
The only conclusion I can arrive at is the absolute need to totally disolve the federal governmenet--ALL OF IT--and start anew. And because there's so much money and power at stake, a Revolutionary War is the only method that will arrive at the needed result.
"But until you have a chance to elect someone and make a difference you will just be helping to elect another Republican. As far as I'm concerned a vote for Nadar in 2000 was a vote for Bush, no differnce- and all those who helped elect him and kept Gore from office ought to rightly blame their own idiocy for the last 8 years."
Bull squat. Democrats and Republican: two peas in a corporate pod. And with statements like the one above ALL YOU WILL GET is more votes for Nader. So please continue. Run Ralph, Run!
The guy who lost the election in 2000 to a no brain from Texas was Al Gore. And this Democrats is what you refuse to accept. That your "intellectual" Al Gore could not even beat pea brain G.W. in Gore's or Clinton's home state. So spare us the "Wah wah! Nader did it" nonsense. YOUR CANDIDATE BLEW IT! And like G.W. and the Republicans, Democrats cannot take responsibility for their own failures, the biggest of which is not being able to end the illegal war which they VOTED FOR! Democrats and Republicans alike: GUILTY OF WAR CRIMES! GUILTY OF TORTURE! GUILTY OF EXTREME RENDITION! GUILTY OF SPYING AND LYING! GUILTY OF LETTING BUSHCO GET AWAY WITH SHREDDING THE CONSTITUTION!
And by the way, 300,000 plus Democrats n Florida in 2000 VOTED FOR BUSH! So them democrats "helped elect him [Bush] and kept Gore from office" and you are right, you "ought to rightly blame their own idiocy for the last 8 years."
YOU Democrats LOST the White House! Not Nader. And this crap is why millions of us former Democrats spit your Party. Ptuwee.
Personally I do not support the process of impeachment. Arrest by a platoon of Marines and an airplane ride to the Hague, now THAT I support. Much cheaper, as well.

Just press the right lever on Election Day like a good doggie and everything will be better!
I forgot by the time I got to the bottom of everyones Posts, whomever said that the democrats voted to bury Impeachment and McGovern was wrong. No he was correct. They, most of the Democrats, voted Yea because that is how it gets referred to the Full Committee on the Judiciary to enable them to vote. If they said Nay it would never have been referred to the Judiciary.
I'm just sayin'....
