It's Conyers's Time to Act on Impeachment
Now.
Not to delay.
Not to cower.
Not to bend to the will of Nancy Pelosi.
But to stand up tall for the Constitution as head of the House Judiciary Committee.
By introducing 35 thoughtful and detailed articles of impeachment against President Bush on June 9, Dennis Kucinich has put Conyers on the spot.
It's "to be, or not to be" time.
And Conyers knows what's right. He himself introduced a bill to explore grounds for impeaching Bush-but that was in 2005, before the Democrats came to power.
Lewis Lapham of Harper's interviewed Conyers and wrote about his brave and quixotic stance back then. Why was Conyers for impeachment then? " 'To take away the excuse,' he said, 'that we didn't know.' So that two or four or ten years from now, if somebody should ask, 'Where were you, Conyers, and where was the United States Congress?' when the Bush Administration declared the Constitution inoperative and revoked the license of parliamentary government, none of the company now present can plead ignorance or temporary insanity, can say that 'somehow it escaped our notice' that the President was setting himself up as a supreme leader exempt from the rule of law."
So why is Conyers doing nothing now, when, as the Supreme Court ruled again this week, the President has essentially set himself up as a supreme leader exempt from the rule of law?
Because Nancy Pelosi and Steny Hoyer, the cowardly leaders of the Democratic Party in the House, have told him to. They claim, in public, that it would be a waste of time, since Bush's term is running out, or that they have more important things to do. But privately I'm sure they are saying it might not be good for the party in November. I believe they are wrong about that, since Bush is extremely unpopular, and impeachment would galvanize the progressive base. But even if they're right, they're putting petty party politics above the Constitution.
Jack Cafferty of CNN made a similar point in a great commentary on CNN.
And Jonathan Turley and Keith Olbermann have been going over the grounds of impeachment on MSNBC.
The Washington Post covered it.
The AP ran a story. So did the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
And Rochelle Riley of the Detroit Free Press wrote an impressive column praising Kucinich.
But The New York Times didn't do its own story, taking only a handful of words from the AP. And impeachment did not exactly lead the nightly network news programs.
I also wonder why more members of the House haven't endorsed Kucinich's resolution.
At this moment, there are only three: Lynn Woolsey and Barbara Lee of California, and Robert Wexler of Florida.
"A decision by Congress to pursue impeachment is not an option, it is a sworn duty," Wexler said. "It is time for Congress to stand up and defend the Constitution against blatant violations and illegalities of this Administration."
Woolsey focused on the crime of the Iraq War. "More than 4,000 brave men and omen have paid for President Bush's mistake with their lives," said Woolsey. "And tens of thousands of others will forever bear the physical and mental wounds of war. As a coequal branch of government, the Congress owes it to each one of them, and their families, to hold those who led us to war under false pretenses accountable."
For her part, Lee, too, cited "the President's abuse of the public trust in his fateful and calamitous decision to launch an unnecessary war in Iraq." But she also remarked upon Bush's "campaign of fear mongering and demagoguery to curtail the civil liberties of Americans at home in the name of fighting the so-called War on Terror. Congressman Kucinich has performed a valuable service to our nation by documenting for the record this tragic history."
Lee, Woolsey, and Wexler are showing the kind of principle that should be commonplace but alas is not in Congress. Where are the other decent Democratic members of the House? What are they hiding from? Where is their spine?
Despite the lack of coverage and support, Kucinich trudges on in his lonely battle in defense of our Constitutional government.
If the Judiciary Committee fails to hold hearings within the month, Kucinich says he'll reintroduce his bill.
"We must not only create an historical record of the misconduct of the Bush Administration," he said, "but we must make sure that any future Administration is forewarned about the Constitutionally proscribed limits of executive authority and exercise of power contravening the Constitution."
John Conyers, are you out there?
Are you listening?
Dennis Kucinich is saying exactly what you were saying before you became chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.
Now you have the power. Use it.
To hell with Pelosi and Hoyer.
This is your moment for courage.

Show AllConyers toll free numbers........800-828-0498 ......800-459-1887 and his office in Rayburn..apparently he'll answer directly courtesy of "turce" on another article.....202-225-5126...
I agree with Matt and consider him a friend...
two points in the article, though:
1) Pelosi and Hoyer are not "cowards" they are complicit with the Bush Administration---Should be called the Bush/Congress Criminal Cabal.
2) I disagree with Lynn, also (someone whom I also admire a lot). George did not make any "mistakes" in Iraq. The invasion and occupation were based on known lies and everything is going according to the Bush/Congress Criminal Cabal.

Cindy
When I called Conyers' office the day of the vote to refer impeachment to his committee, the phone-answerer didn't even know it was before the House, or what I was talking about. I don't know how they got to him, but they did.
The Democrats have had control of Congress for 2 years now. Satisfied? Like what you see? Then vote for Democrats this year.
In Oregon and in many states, you will have an option: the Greens are running a Peace Slate focusing on House of Representatives seats. We will also be running Cynthia McKinney for President, a former Congresswoman who was the first to introduce Articles of Impeachment, in 2005! That was just before the Democrats pushed her out, with Republican collusion, for being far too gutsy.
I called Conyers, as I said, but I think it's hopeless. It's time to turn these sold-out pols out on their ears.
With all due respect to Cindy, I think you have to be a coward to be a part of the Bush/Congress Criminal Cabal for all they do is cowardly. But I reckon it's just semantics.
Conyers failure to act is a severe blow to all who believe that the participation of minorities in our government will make it a better place, and, will also inhibit the voting for minorities in the future. For all practical purposes, Conyers is white.
When will we be attacked from within by the cabal Blackwater we fund and train?
Kucinich and Wexler are REAL Americans. I took the Oath to Defend the Constitution seven times during my 43 years of service with the US Army, the same Oath that our Congressmen and women take and either they should do their DUTY or should also face Impeachment. Excuses such as waste of time, Bush's term is running out or that they have more important things to do, just does not sell. They have an obligation to DO the MOST IMPORTANT thing, and that is to Defend the Constitution. They MUST Impeach or face the consequences. No more excuses Madame Speaker, Do your sworn duty or get out.
The simplest and most logical explanation of why Pelosi, Reid, Conyers, etal are loath to impeach Bush and Cheney is that any investigation would prove their complicity in the deception of the American people. Judging from their own legislative histories they all have been bought and paid for by the corporations that run our nation. The status quo will remain in power until most of us have been stripped of all of our rights and possesions. Take a look around at the economic conditions that exist in the country right now. See what has happened to the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Unless the ruling elite is purged from power the nation's plight will only become worse.
Apparently this is not a priority with Conyers. It was very apparent on the YouTube meeting between Turce, other members of the Veterans Against War, and Conyers. As a courtesy, Conyers wants to review all of the materials presented to him, however, he seems not to be in much of a hurry. He did ask Turce and other members of the Vets to return for discussion, but at a later date and expense to the VAW. I just hope he will treat Turce and members of the VAW better than he did the Code Pink ladies. I think Conyers is stonewalling, because he is arrogant and wants to do things his way. I don't anticipate much if anything to happen at all.
Call your representative this summer, email them again and again.
All they are attempting to do at this point is investigate. Since they are politicians anyway, they will see that it is a good campaign strategy and perhaps will embrace the idea. You know the idea that at one time they represented us.
Pressure on Conyers is good to do, but he clearly shut his mouth about acting on Bush's crimes when he got his appointment as head of the Judiciary Committee.
The people think in terms of issues and Constitutional rights, but politicians think about their ambitions and posts. Even in power, Democratic Congressional representatives have opted for mere symbolic actions while major crimes go unaddressed.
They serve the people not at all. This two-party duopoloy needs to be destroyed.
And about John Conyers who used to be a friend of mine:
On July 23rd, 3-400 activists took a petition with 985,000 signatures on it to impeach Bush and one with 250,000 sigs to impeach Cheney. He hemed and hawed and said let's have more meetings and he said he can't impeach because of what Fox News would say and he said that he can't impeach just because "millions of Americans want him to," his phone was ringing off the hook that day and when he wouldn't budge, 49 of us (including myself) were arrested in his office.
In a meeting prior to the July 23rd meeting, John told me two very interesting things:
1) Pelosi is the major obstacle, so if she won't green light impeachment, he won't do it.
2) It is more important to him to elect a Democratic president than ending the war and if he impeaches, then he is afraid the Dems will lose the White House.
My dear friends----John Conyers knows more about this issue, the ins and outs of impeachment and the political ramifications, than we do.
You can call him and write him until your fingers bleed, but he won't budge, because the co-conspirators have told him he will lose his chairmanship if he does. It's a game of running out the clock now, and Dennis waiting until July 9th to re-introduce the articles and adding 25 more, is playing into this game.
As far as I am concerned, they will all go down in infamy.
Nonetheless, I will be in DC on July 9th, cheering Dennis on from the gallery when he introduces the other 25 articles and I hope you can join me.
Support my campaign to take Ms. Nancy "Bush enabler" Pelosi "off the table."
Cindy
I have a question, not only for Dennis Kucinich, but also for the commenters on this thread:
Suppose Conyers DID start impeachment proceedings, (which begin, of course, with an investigation of the allegations in the indictment). Now suppose the process plays itself out completely, and Bush is removed. Hello, President CHENEY.
Why didn't Dennis include the two of them? Because next in line would have been President Nancy Pelosi.
I've said it before -- it's politically impossible to do this! What's more, it would likely bring on a wag-the-dog scenario relative to Iran. Of course we're enraged, but let's be careful what we wish for! Better focus our energies on cooling down the rhetoric on Iran, and reiterating that the latest NIE contradicts Bush's claims about Iran's nuclear program.
After January 2009 Bush and Cheney will be wide open to international investigations about war crimes. Let's leave them to the world.
Rothchild is a dreaamer.
He says Conyers is on the spot. Wasn't Spot the name of Dick & Jane's dog?
Expressing surprise that the House didn't act on Kucinich's 35 articles of impeachment? What did they do when he proposed impeachment of Dick Cheney?
What did they do when voters gave them control of the House of Representatives after the 2006 election (not to mention the Senate as well)?
Once upon a time there was a Congress.
They drew salaries that were paid for by the U. S. taxpayers. They had a wonderful health insurance program. They had all kinds of opportunities for "spiffs" when courted by lobbyists for special interest groups; all kinds of trips, hotel lodgings, free meals & perhaps some "unmentionalbes". Some were fortunate enough to get re-elected to several terms of office.
And everyone lived happily ever after... except their poor, unfortunate, gullible constituents.
Back to Dick & Jane & Spot and their little red wagon.

Cindy,
You definitely have my full support. It is profoundly disgusting that the Democrats will put getting elected before conducting their sworn duty to try elected officials for war crimes (I know Bush was not elected, but selected). Such is politics. It definitely is time to boot Pelosi out of office!
Just pull the right lever on Election Day like a good doggie and everything will be better!
The lack of action and/or complicity by our congress is amazing. Funny how when the Republicans are in the majority, they're like a pack of rabid wolves over the slightest Dem transgression. But since the Democrats took the majority, the lengthly list of brazen crimes by Bush et al are A-OK. Fortunately we still have some rights and freedoms - use them while you can! As evidenced by the link to the Cafferty commentary, truth does get into the Corporate Media occasionally. Fight for more of that! Challenge the propaganda machine. Boycott the sponsors of propaganda! Vote McKinney in November! Vote for Cindy Sheehan if you live in her district - Cindy's campaign will expose Pelosi's devastating treason. Divest your war profit stocks!
AdeleTheCzech June 15th, 2008 2:12 pm The powers that these criminals have gained will NOT be rescinded by the next president and the unitary executive will keep getting worse. It's up to WE the People to stop this criminality NOW and hold this cabal accountable. If not, we can NEVER again call ourselves true Americans. We CANNOT wait for someone else to fix OUR problems. Why not just dis-ban the entire government and return to pre-revolutionary times. Truth is we are not far from that right now. Install the shrub as a KING and forget about it. No doubt this should have been started the moment we knew the reasons for the war in Iraq were lies. BUT, it's NEVER TOO LATE. Conyers is worried about what FOX would say??? Am I hearing this correctly? If this is not insanity, what the hell is? Our country is now determined by FOX f-ing News? May the Universe and the parents, friends and relatives of all the dead American, Afghan and Iraqi soldiers and civilians PLEASE FORGIVE ALL OF US. I cannot!
Yep, I told John Conyers that if I worried about what Fox would say about me, I wouldn't do anything...
and to AdeletheChech...
Dennis has introduced article of impeachment against Cheney months ago, and we CANNOT wait until January, 2009...that is so weak. Justice doesn't wait if you are a homeowner in foreclosure...justice doesn't wait if you live in Iraq or Afghanistan or if you have a child in harm's way in those places...justice can't wait as our economy is in free fall and the degradation of our environment is proceeding more rapidly than many experts predicted.
Obama, even if he wins, will not cure any of these problems with the unitary executive branch...more Corporate Dems (and Obama is one of them) are not the answer---better Dems and more third party or independent reps are the answer.
Gotta fly, bye

In following up on the ramifications of Dennis Kucinich's historic Articles To Impeach Bush, I listened to Jonathan Turley's (http://jonathanturley.org/) explanation of WHY The House is not responding, supporting or even debating the concept of impeaching the President. He contends that there are two reasons --
First and foremost many, if not most, of the Democrats in The House were, at one time or another, briefed on sensitive areas -- like torture, 911, Iraq, election fraud, etc. -- and since they didn't individually or collectively stand up and take contrarian positions at the time, they (these various members of The House) feel that they would be "embarrassed" as well as perhaps legally and politically liable, should these issues come up in impeachment proceedings. Secondly, if the fallibility and possible culpability of these House members were to be exposed, then during the upcoming elections the Neocons could, and most probably would, use this information to their advantage in order to massively maintain or unseat vulnerable seats around the country.
It all boils down to the fact that we have elected to Congress too many members with no or low scruples and principles. IOWs, our House Of Representatives (and probably the Senate too) is riddled with elected officials of low moral character (SURPRISE, SURPRISE!)! IMO, we SHOULD expose and identify these creeps so we CAN replace them in the upcoming elections. The other solution to this stagnate political cesspool appears to be that in order to gather enough legal proof to justify an impeachment, we must -- since The House has no real arm of enforcement -- re-vitalize the Office Of Special Prosecutor -- due to the fact that our current Attorney General is controlled by Bush and voluntarily impotent. Once we re-create this position (Which was mistakenly abandoned by the Democrats after the last impeachment.) and mandate that that person of high moral character (Patrick Fitzgerald or Vincent Bugliosi?) is to collect proof of impeachable acts ("high crimes and misdemeanors"), then the House Judiciary Committee could present it to the rest of The House for a vote.
Oh, to just make it so ...

Long live, Cindy Sheehan and Dennis Kucinich. They embody courage. Why Dennis stays with the Dems, I will never know. I love him regardless. Bush/Cheney must have something real good on Conyers for him to do the about-face he's done.
"The lack of action and/or complicity by our congress is amazing."
One of the truths we hold self-evident is that governments "derive their just powers from the consent of the governed". What have the American people done to suggest that Congress' lack of action and/or complicity is without their consent? Clearly, not enough. And therefore it is We The People who are complicit in the crimes of our government.
"Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. " Ben Franklin
"But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security." The Declaration of Independence, 1776
"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants" Thomas Jefferson
Our forefathers would be disgusted and repulsed at how our stature as a people has shrunk over the years. Truly we have the government we deserve.
To willybill and Cindy: It's fine that you are arguing I'm wrong -- but neither of you is contradicting my three main points:
(1) If by some miracle Bush were impeached and convicted -- let's not forget that we need a large # of Senate votes for THAT little detail -- that leaves us with Darth Cheney as President. I can hardly believe that either of you would want that!
(2) Even if Dennis had drawn up the Bill to get rid of both B & C, that would leave the Senate with two options: don't remove them, and get Nancy as President, or vote not to convict. (Guess what they'd do.)
(3) Starting impeachment proceedings against Bush carries the grave danger of "the decider" opting for an attack on Iran; what could be a greater distraction from impeachment? And who could stop him?
If you disagree, provide us with alternative scenarios for these three. Many thanks!
Adele
Sorry, in Point #2 the lst option should read: remove them.
Adele
I believe in our country, I believe we are in a terrible state of denial about what is going on behind the seats of power. If Conyers is fearful of Fox news and Pelosi then we have reached a sad state of affairs. Pelosi, Hoyer, Reid are just as much part of the War in Iraq going on as Bush and Cheney. The Democratic Party failed to realize in 2006 how much of a call for change they got from the American people.
I believe the sweep in the 06 elections was a mandate from the people to stop the nonsense that the Bush-Cheney machine had foisted upon us. Pelosi and Reid are just as much traitors as Libermann. I hope you win Cindy to get Nancy off the table as well, we americans may have to keep voting the bums out until we find folks who will listen to us, for God's sake, its our country not the power brokers who sit in Washington and weave their webs like spiders!! We need to open a can of Whup Ass Raid and get rid of them!!
Our forefathers owned slaves and thought nothing -- NOTHING -- of killing the indigenous peoples of what we now call the USA. That conciousness continues today. I agree with what redrooster has said.
In writing a letter to my Democratic congressman, to Conyers and other Democratic members of the judiciary committee and (in a modified version) to my Democratic Senators, I tried to boil down the argument for pushing for impeachment into the simplest possible terms:
.............
Dear xxx
I urge you to speak, lobby and when possible vote for the Articles of Impeachment that the House just sent to the Judiciary Committee, and to join in co-sponsoring them.
Far from being a distraction from the election, they will, win or lose, force open a national debate on the Bush Administration and its many crimes and slimy deeds, and turn the election in part into a referendum on Bush. If we do this, Obama wins.
This would also cripple Bush's ability to start another war, and to thereby change the subject to who would be the best war leader, an issue on which Obama could lose.
It is moreover the only right thing to do, the only way to prevent Bush's behavior from setting a whole rash of awful precedents for the power and responsibilities of the President.
Respectfully, ...
.........
Someone on my list wrote back in praise of these letters, and I went back to look at them. They are indeed gems. Irrefutable. But it didn't take an Einstein to come up with this. I'm sure every Democratic Congressperson has at least considered these thoughts. In any case it is essentially just what Kucinich said when he introduced the Articles of Impeachment against Dick Cheney a year or so ago!
So the real question is not why should Congress impeach, but what's stopping them.
One correspondent of mine opined that it is just that Congresspeople can't think in terms of the right thing to do, they are so conditioned to think in terms of what's possible. Maybe. But that's pretty hard to swallow. All but four of them can't see it? Even when Impeachment is so obviously a winning strategy?
Or maybe they've decided to let Obama be the leader and follow his signals; but some of these Congresspeople have seen 3, 4, even 5 Democratic candidates go down to defeat pursuing their own cautious strategies, and they must know better.
Many of them must still be angry, frustrated, even torn up inside about their inability to end the war or curb the President. They must really want to do this. Conyers has said as much. So what is holding them in check?
I can't help but suspect that there is more here than meets the eye.
In the meantime there is a great dam of resistance holding the progressive Congressional Democrats in check, however it works. It is a dam of ice, not stone. If we put the heat on it we can breach it and release the pent up pressure behind it. And once this stuff is forced out onto the front pages, the anger and outrage of the people will come into play. If we all push together, maybe we can make it happen.
AdeleTheCzech June 15th, 2008 3:09 pm...The idea is to UPHOLD THE LAW OF THE CONSTITUTION. Otherwise, just trash it...afterall, the shrub just calls it as G-D piece of paper. How far the process will goes remains to be seen. Can pelosi or Cheney do any more damage than they have ALL done already? Anything less than impeachment is based on fear..fear of this or that. Justice cannot be ruled by fear. Law is law. If the shrubs reaction to impeachment proceedings was to bomb Iran, do you really think the CONgress or the American people would sit back and allow this? If so, then we would get what we deserve...very likely a third and final WW. Are we to be afraid to enforce impeachment because of the fear of the shrubs reaction? If so, WE HAVE ALREADY LOST THIS GOVERNMENT AND THIS NATION TO THESE ELITE CRIMINALS.
A law is a law. We cannot base the enforcement of a law according to political ramifications or media considerations. What kind of society would that create?
i've called all three numbers listed above...the first toll free number is answered by a capitol receptionsist...she transferred me to john conyer's line...when i called back to say there was no voice mail, she said 'i know, he is one who chooses to shut his voice mail off'....the second toll free number is always busy...the 202 number just keeps ringing...hmm, real representative of the people, huh?
It's too late.
We now have over 300 million American war criminals. Each and every one that paid taxes to support this monstrous assault on the peace is guilty!
A. Cindy and I disagree sometimes, but she is spot on here. Absolutely correct down to the last period.
B."For all practical purposes, Conyers is white."
I would suggest we don't need racism here.
C."redrooster June 15th, 2008 2:53 pm"
Absolutely correct and well said.
D. "Meg June 15th, 2008 3:14 pm"
There were no indigenous peoples of what we now call the USA plus I casn't see how this or slaves connectys to what redrooster said in any way.
For all practical purposes, Conyers is white.
OMG please let these proceedings go through! The sooner we can get Dictator Bush out of office, the better off we will all be!

Adele if you read the explainations with documentation for each of the 35 Articles Dennis indeed implicates Cheney many, many times.
Did you print all 65 pages? Too many papers ,files, bills with full text strewn about but go to Dennis' website and he has the entire link for all 65 pages.
I am sorry you had to run Cindy, the DC House all stopped by the little Mexican joint near the Rayburn to Thank us, though, for all the good and such.. I will most certainly be there when Dennis introduces the next 25 cheering him on, like bill Perry, you know him, my Chapter Prez yells to Dennis as he is dashing off, House in full session voting, You Da Man, Dennis!! Leave it to good ol' Bill, the big bear.
those who live in glass houses are wise not to throw stones.
Unsurprisingly, I again concur with RichM.
All of the pragmatic reasons for avoiding impeachment, including the attempt to split the difference by the "first things first" argument which holds out the carrot of dealing with President Unitard and his criminal misfeasors AFTER they are out of office, are predicated on the error of subsuming the process of governing into politics.
I was gratified to hear Congressman Kucinich on "Democracy Now" the other night making this point, i.e. that there are questions of government which are larger than politics, and which cannot be fairly understood and addressed within the political calculus.
As I've been commenting fitfully for months, my view is that our political class has become so corporatized that our political institutions can fairly be described as para-corporate. Thus, political philosophy has gone the way of business philosophy-- it's all about doing the deals and ensuring that the deal-making process isn't burdened or encumbered by "abstract" moral and ethical issues fraught with inefficiency and political RISK.
This transformation has been relatively gradual, although the astonishing thing is that it has occurred in plain sight without attracting much attention. Since the Watergate crisis, our politicians have backed off so far from accepting and respecting Constitutionally-imposed duties and sensibilities that the impeachment clause has become but a "quaint" relic, like a horse hitching rail in front of some small-town Post Office.
So from the beginning, the questions about impeaching our illicit and criminal Executive Branch renegades have not been "Is it the RIGHT thing to do?" or "Is it a PROPER exercise of Constitutional duty?" Hell, no! It's ALL about "impeachment" as a POLITICAL phenomenon-- whether it would "fly" in public opinion, whether it would inspire "blowback" that would damage the Democratic Party's political standing-- etc., etc., etc., ad nauseam.
Those may be serious and worthwhile questions, but they ought to take a back seat to the grave and perilous high-minded questions of GOVERNMENT. To paraphrase a point made by Howard Zinn in a CD article a while back, there seems to be a modern tendency for citizens, especially politically-aware blog crawlers, to internalize the politician's viewpoint in analyzing and judging political action. In a nutshell, probably badly paraphrased, Zinn deplores this tendency of intelligent voters taking their cues from politicians and campaign analysts, and modifying their wishes and demands according to what the politician and general political market will bear.
That is, it is perfectly right, legitimate, and proper for outraged citizens to demand impeachment on its MERITS; Zinn might say that's the citizenry's JOB. Then it's up to the POLITICIANS to figure out how to handle the inconvenient will of the people. Instead, especially since the Bill Clinton impeachment debacle, citizens go right to the political tea leaves in the bottom of the cup-- tea brewed by feckless, self-serving politicians and their enablers-- and piously buy into the strategic and tactical prospects discouraging such a problematic and risky enterprise. Bound by these "inside politics" blinders, voters feel compelled to unhappily concur with their political leaders' conclusion that impeachment is simply a "non-starter". All of the potential pitfalls and "what-ifs" result from this instinct to not risk rocking the boat, not the other way around.
In short, the right thing and the expedient thing are hopelessly conflated in the lesser-evil, cautious, incrementalist, calculating approach, and expedience triumphs. The result-- from Ford pardoning Nixon to Bill Clinton shutting down investigations into the Savings & Loan and Iran-Contra scandals in the name of forging "bipartisan unity"-- is that wrongdoing goes unpunished, and comes back to inflict even greater depredations on the nation.
The hypocrisy is what makes me the sickest. America, with 5% of the world's population, and 25% of the world's prisoners, is unable to hold it's highest "elected" officials to following the laws of the land.
Bush has bragged about breaking the law. His job is to faithfully execute the laws and to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution. (Not the American people). One of the laws he brags about breaking is the one that extends the Fourth Amendment to 20th century technology. Therefore, he broke the law and attacked the Constitution in one fell swoop. And Congress can't impeach? Bullshit.
They are required to impeach in case of treason, bribery and other high crimes and misdemeanors. Take your pick.
We live in a country that will throw a poor person in jail for the third misdemeanor, but lets man who stole the Presidency, looted billions from the public treasury, and broke national and international laws go free, cause it's just too much trouble to impeach and he's almost gone and who wants Cheney anyway.
Give me a break. As if Cheney isn't already running the country. Bush rides his bike and cuts down trees and watches TV. He doesn't even know he's breaking the law. He's an idiot and he's just doing what he's told.
But ignorance of the law is no excuse. And being a hired thug still makes him culpable.
Vote for Cindy Sheehan and Cynthia McKinney!
Must read: "The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder" by Vincent Bugliosi.
lol
What will happen if coppies of letters are sent to local elected officials and media?
The real power is local not the Washington bubble.
Is this about a political party or people?
"Of by and for" the people.
The real power is local

Several comments up above, someone made reference to our present Attorney General Mukasy being under the influence of George W. Bush.
When it was obvious how corrupt his predecessor was, Alberto "Fredo" Gonzales, everyone raised a big fuss but did nothing and simply allowed him to "resign" office at HIS convenience.
One major issue at the time that Bush had nominated Mukasy as his successor was when he was asked if waterboarding should be considered illegal. He did not say yes, he did not say no, he didn't even say that he didn't no; rather he refused to answer.
His appointment nevertheless was confirmed by Congress.
How anyone could expect this same Congress to let the 35 articles of impeachment as submitted this past week by Dennis Kucinich to go any further is beyond belief.
And someone also suggested that the results of the 2006 election represented a mandate with regard to taking action to get us out of Iraq.
This is absolutely preposterous. Just listen to what John McCain has said; the fact that the Republicans lost so many seats in both Houses of Congress was because voters were unhappy with the economy.
This happens to be the same economy that Senator McCain was quoted as saying that he was not that familiar with.
When he was reminded that he had made the statement at a Republican debate that was being moderated by Tim Russert, he looked directly at Russert and a live TV audience and denied having ever said that.
Regardless of how you may have felt about Tim Russert; you could be one of those who has said his leanings were too far left.
Say what you will about him, but he always "did his homework". If he said that you said it, YOU SAID IT!
So, Obama supporters, don't you go getting over-confident about your "change" candidate. Despite the fact it is evident that we should never have gone into Iraq, stayed in IRaq, and now must get out of Iraq.John McCain is riding on one hope. That is the fact that in 2004, it was already clear to the American people that we were led into Iraq in 2003 by false representations fabricated by Bush and Cheney. They were still re-elected.
The recent revelations of Scott McClellan's book and the Jay Rockefeller Report do little more than just put icing on that same cake that has just been sitting there getting stale.
McCain is banking on people ignoring the "stale cake" and electing him in November and, much as I hate to say it, I believe he's got a good chance of pulling it off.
Disclaimer: What follows is not a defense of Conyers inaction. I signed Ramsey Clark's petition to Impeach in early 03...
That said...
Conyers laid down his marker some time ago. He has said that if Bush attempts to attack Iran without Congressional authorization, then he will begin Impeachment hearings. Dennis (who I campaigned for and voted for in 04) knows this. So consider the timing: The Administration has been ratcheting up the rhetoric on Iran alot in the last month or so. Dennis is loading the gun and putting it in Conyers' hand with the Articles he introduced last week. If nothing else, this is the last ditch effort to stymie the Cheney-Bush junta from starting war with Iran.
Again, that was an analysis, not an opinion.
My opinion, if anyone's interested, has remained the same since the Fall of 02: IMPEACH, IMPEACH, IMPEACH!!!
Rich M, Oh yes the line of succession DOES MATTER! After NAncy Pelosi is Robert Byrd of WV. His moral ethical code is impeccable but the man is 91 years old! I don't think he would have the energy!! ( I'm a firm believer in the wisdom of age.....but there is a cut off point!)
Next in line I think is Harry Reid..............
That said. Another critical point for impeachment is this...Several of the articles outline election theft. In the process of impeachment hearings; this will be discussed, and more people made aware of it. Too many are unaware that the last several were stolen! Thanks MSM!
The tools for far greater theft are now in place BECAUSE OF the Unitary Presidency! THE stakes for loosing power are far greater ( imprisonment. loss of "legacy", seems to matter a lot in some quarters.) WHY the Dems are using the excuse that it will cost the election has me scratching my head! It is more likely for the Dems to lose the election if the unethical voting is allowed to continue!

"I called Conyers, as I said, but I think it's hopeless. It's time to turn these sold-out pols out on their ears."
You summed it up well my friend.
We demand the immidiate firing of Nanci Pelosi, out with Pelosi the scumbag.
Keep writing, keep walking, keep talking impeachment. The response I receive to my car window painting: 9/11 Liars..Bush/Cheney..Impeach! Is tremendously heartening. Impeachment - it's a word that evokes the most impassioned response (the organically expressed True Voice of the American Spirit!) across socioeconomic lines that it's a thrilling phenomenon in it's own right.
What is the strategy of introducing legislation and then not joining the Republicans in voting to bring the resolution to the floor? Let's get the greatest conversation in human governance since the Constitutional Convention moving on.
As Mother Cindy will always remind us...remember the sons and daughters and Iraqi children still in harms way. Let's return human dignity to America's global image - now. Vote in Nov....Impeach Now.
