In short, we are living in an on-going state of emergency whose exact limits are unknown, on the basis of a controversial deep event -- 9/11 -- that is still largely a mystery.

Unhindered by a neutered Congress and a compliant Court, President Bush has six months remaining to pursue his agenda of expanding the war in the Middle East and ensuring the continuation of the Global War on Terror (GWOT) beyond his tenure in office.
The current administration has taken unto itself unprecedented, nearly hegemonic powers since the events of 9/11. On that day, George W. Bush issued his "Declaration of Emergency by Reason of Certain Terrorist Attacks" under the authority of the National Emergencies Act. This declaration, which can be rescinded by joint resolution of Congress, has instead been extended six times. In 2007, the declaration was strengthened with the issuance of National Security Presidential Directive 51 (NSPD-51) which gave the president the authority to do whatever he deems necessary in a vaguely defined "catastrophic emergency" including everything from canceling elections to suspending the Constitution to launching a nuclear attack.
Despite time constraints, there are clear signs that the president, the vice-president and their neocon collaborators are not finished. The constant saber-rattling toward Iran, with strong support from Israel, should send a chill down the spine of any peace-loving American. Military chiefs who oppose the president are "retired," as observed most recently with the March dismissals of CENTCOM commander Admiral William Fallon and 6th Fleet commander Vice-Admiral John Stufflebeem. Public opinion counts for nothing. In a March 24 interview with ABC's Martha Raddatz, vice president Dick Cheney responded to a question about the war weariness of Americans with a languid "So?"
According to J. Scott Carpenter, former deputy assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern Affairs, Cheney pushed hard for airstrikes against Iranian Revolutionary Guard bases last summer. He was deterred by Pentagon officials who insisted that retaliation might be difficult to contain. Now, with Cheney ally General David Petraeus poised to take over Fallon's command, a significant obstacle has been removed.
It seems clear that there is a deadly struggle going on within the US government, a struggle that could well determine not only the election of the next president, but the survival of the republic. On one side are the neocons, the fanatics who led us into Iraq and who believe they alone possess the strategic acumen to usher in a "new American century." On the other is the Republican Party old guard ostensibly led by Defense Secretary Robert Gates. Gates was brought into the administration at the end of 2006 to replace the disgraced and despised Donald Rumsfeld, and generally to ride herd over the neocons.
The conflict between these factions has broken into the open over the past eight months. The first public signal came in October of last year, when the sixteen US intelligence agencies issued a consensus National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) that cut the legs out from under the administration's argument that Iran was on the verge of developing a nuclear weapon. The NIE stated that the Iranians had stopped work on the project in 2003.
Just before Labor Day last year, a B-52 Stratofortress bomber carrying six cruise missiles armed with nuclear warheads flew an unauthorized mission from Minot AFB in North Dakota to Barksdale AFB in Louisiana. Due to anonymous, high-level tips to the Military Times, the warheads were recovered. After several seemingly inconclusive investigations of the incident, Pentagon chief Gates fired Air Force Chief of Staff Michael Moseley and Air Force Secretary Michael Wynne last week, without revealing the role either man played in the nuke heist. Given the volume of evidence that this unprecedented transfer of live nuclear weapons was not an accident, the question remains: what individual or individuals within the government have the authority to commandeer nuclear bombs?
Conservative pundit Patrick J. Buchanan recently suggested that the neocons might be tempted to go to war with Iran in order to improve John McCain's chances of winning the presidency. As audacious as that seems, we want to go one step further. We believe that this administration is so zealous, so determined to hold onto power, that they may well stage a "false flag" attack, creating just the kind of "catastrophic emergency" to which NSPD-51 refers.
On April 29 of this year, CIA veteran Roland V. Carnaby was shot dead by police officers after a high speed chase through the streets of Houston. Carnaby, who had been the CIA's Chief of Station for the Southeast Region headquartered in Houston, was involved in conducting security surveys of the Port of Houston and had discovered that the Department of Homeland Security was tolerating gaping holes in port security. Carnaby and Houston intelligence and law enforcement personnel were also investigating the presence of "Middle Easterners" who were conducting surveillance of the Port of Houston. The "Middle Eastern" designator is the term used by the FBI for Israelis (typically Mossad agents) in order to avoid "political" problems with superiors.
Former National Security Agency analyst and naval intelligence officer Wayne Madsen has been in Houston investigating the Carnaby case at great personal risk. Madsen believes Carnaby was involved both in heading off a potential war with Iran (by leaking Mossad plans to assassinate Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah just days before Carnaby himself was killed) and in trying to forestall a potential terrorist attack on the port.
According to Madsen, "federal agents in Houston fear that 'another 9/11-type part false flag' attack is imminent, perhaps as early as July 4." Such an attack along the twenty-five-mile Houston Ship Channel, site of more explosive materials, toxic gases, and deadly petrochemicals than anywhere else in the country, could create an environmental and economic catastrophe that would dwarf 9/11.
How will the struggle within this administration be brought to an end? Will courageous military men like Adm. Fallon speak out before the next national tragedy befalls us? Will Congress act decisively to remove the president's emergency powers, challenge NSPD-51, and defend the Constitution? Will Defense Secretary Gates hold the line?
With just a half year left in what many believe has been the worst presidency in American history the possibilities are many, and some of them are truly frightening. As citizens of this country, we must do everything in our power to ensure that there is no expansion of war in the Middle East, no "false flag" attack at the Port of Houston or anywhere else, and a peaceful and constitutional succession to a new administration.

With this bit of info you can begin to see and realize we are controled by people who have no love for our Nation. Here's what it boils down to folks, we, the American people have been waiting for a "savior" someone to come in, in the eleventh hour and save us from these hapless barbarians that are trying to end the good ol US of A as we know it, for their own personal, professional and power hungry agendas. We the people have forgotten one important tenant, that we do NOT need the govt to save us during our times of need.
We are currently facing a terrifying economy and a fuel crisis that has never been seen on this grand of a scale and people are beginning to panic and this has NEVER helped anyone. Panic is the end of intelligent solutions. What we need to begin doing is banding on a local, community level to help our own local economy and thereby loosing the strangle hold of the govt over everyday citizens.
Imagine getting together a shopping caravan that will save on gas and get the community together. By planning shopping trips, we save on gas and have some time to socialize amongst a community that we've been taught to fear for the last 20 years of listening to main stream media.
We have to ignore the MSM and start banding together as citizens, not just of this country but of the human community. Start investing those shopping trips to the local farmers markets and ranchers. Start organizing clothing exchanges. Start organizing events where we can begin getting to know one another again. Lets reach out to those that are less fortunate and make sure that they have at least the basics to survive until their situations get better or help them to that place.
Let's start getting local doctors offices and medical centers together to provide low cost if not free health care for people that are struggling and sick. How can a community stand on its feet if its mostly ill from something or another.
Lets start working on an community level to bring together a contingency plan of what to do in the event of a disaster. Do we really need the federal govt to do this for us? Why? Why have we become so complacent? Isn't it time we took back our own accountability and responsibility for ourselves as a community and as an individual?
Maybe we should bring back the barter system? I'll bake you a loaf of bread if you sew me a shirt? I'll fix your car, if you plant some vegetables for me? I'll repair your roof, if you fix my plumbing?
We the people have more power then we realize. If THEY believe that the "almighty" dollar is where its at, that money controls EVERYTHING. Then lets start controlling where our individual dollars go. Start paying attention to labels, to where you purchase your goods. Start paying attention what these big corporations are siding with in govt and if you don't approve, DON'T spend your dollar there.
The American people have forgotten their roots of the old frontier days, where a small community was cut off from "civilization" while we expanded the development of this country. When a man's barn burned down, he didn't have to petition an insurance co. or the govt for help, the community drew together and pitched in and within a weeks time, that barn was back up and good as new.
We the people need to reconnect with that sense of community that we've lost and start helping one another.
Imagine how little power the govt and these big corps would have if we all just stopped dancing to the tune of what we believe is necessary to survive!
Do we really need led poisoned toys made in china and bought at Wal-Mart? Of course NOT!
Do we need to cower in fear of the big bad govt coming to take us all away to FEMA camps for the purpose of enslavement or extermination?
YES!
But should that fear incapacitate us from helping ourselves.
NO!
If we have in place OUR own contingency plan of what to do if the govt goes ape shit and totally nullifies the constitution and declares war on the American people under the guise of "continuity" of govt or the "protection" of the American people during a time of "emergency", then they may be able to succeed for a time but not for long. For at the end of the day, the people will wake up and realize that there are more of US then there are of THEM and the home of the free and land of the brave isn't just a slogan, its instilled in all of us patriotic citizens, we've just forgotten it for a while.
I would suggest starting to know your immediate neighbors and then making your rounds, like a ripple in a pond. Start organizing a way to bolster your local economies! Do you really need that strawberry grown in California, when there is perfectly good fruit grown in whatever state you live in? No! Do you really need that t-shirt that you bought at Wal-Mart for $7.99 when you can exchange the clothes you don't want or need for free? If you see a homeless person on the street, do you just look right through them or feel better about yourself if give them a couple of dollars? What happened to organizing our churches for sanctuary from hard times?
Its time people, that we start taking care of ourselves and try to do things in a positive manner that will continue us not as a govt but as a people.
They have trained us to fear one another. Do you ever questions why? Are there really THAT many bad people in your community? Probably at lot less then the local news stations would like for you to believe!
It has to start somewhere right? Why not in your immediate neighborhood and why not right now?
What's the worst that could happen?
Even if the big bad govt sponsored by big business doesn't enact this plan of a hostile take over of the American people, can it hurt to be more involved in your community?
And for those of you that use the excuse of I don't have the time to do anything like that, I have to work to support my family and then care for my family, well how much better would your life be if you had extra hands pitching in where you where once alone? Or would you just rather wait in your exhausted shell of existence for the govt to take you away and decide every aspect of your life?

Excellent piece -- I can appreciate the way the authors tried to generate urgency in every possible way, they are preaching to the Choir!!! WE KNOW, SO WHY DON'T YOU TELL SOMEONE WHO CAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT... oh, how about CONGRESS or a vast media company like CNN, FOX, NBC, ABC, CBS? We the People can all go and camp out in front of the White House I suppose. The complicity in Congress is truly unsettling. I read recently that the Democrats in Congress have higher approval ratings among Republicans than their own party. Another stat: the highest percentile of wealth in this country grew at the highest rate ever from 2002-2006. The neocon agenda benefits the ultra-rich and largest corporations at the expense of nearly everyone and everything else. Why is Kucinich sometimes portrayed as a radical and easily dismissed? Who frames the discussion? I believe this White House has so effectively controlled the national dialogue they literally set the tone and fill the template -- relatively unchallenged by Congress or the MSM. The audacity and disdain Bush & Cheney show for the law and Constitution is mind-boggling. How can you say you love our Country so much -- yet be so willing to put our troops in harms way based on a lie? Didn't our own NIE show that Iran has no nukes? Didn't the Pentagon admit they got it wrong when an arms cache was not from Iran? Hasn't the "conservate" Supreme Court rebuked Bush time and time again? We are in a recession and our economy and dollar is a free-fall, but I don't hear a word from Bush. Will he take another 6-week vacation?

Anyone who doesn't have his/her head in the sand and makes an effort to think clearly while connecting the known dots must realize that the 'i' thing is an empty and futile gesture that only provides him with the excuse he's waiting for to move to the next phase.
Let's face it, NSPD-51 is the key piece of a framework that put the continent into political check mate.
If you really think that impeachment is the way to go, make sure you're prepared to respond to negotiations of a prejudicial kind.

If you bomb Iran's nuclear facilities (which they could give a rat's ass about), you risk creating dirty bombs the likes of which would be Chernobyl ten times over. These facilities are operational, aka hot. You can't bomb a pile of fuel rods. No way. That stuff will go straight into the atmosphere, and all of the sudden every country those winds touch will not be able to export or consume a pound of meat, a gallon of milk, etc. These restrictions will affect their economies for decades.
When the Israelis bombed Iraq's reactor it was not operational--they made a point of doing it before it went online.
And then we have bombing other facilities in Iran. Radar and missile sites. What's that gonna do? Drive the price of oil to freakish levels, creating shortages that will create a cascade effect that would effectually neuter world economies. If no one can drive or eat, how do these jerks make money? If I can't fill at the Exxon station, they lose. But I can fill there now, and gee, it costs a crap-ton of money --to me. And they make record profits again.

Even if the most dire predictions come into manifestation, since it would seem that there is not a damned thing we can do to stop them, I opt for radiating love peace and light to any and all---especially my loved ones. Can any of you think of a better way to spend the last days or week or months on beloved Gaia than that? I invite more suggestions since I see only poiwerlessness and dread in those postings. Will those emotions comfort you in the end? Didn't think so.
So we may as well try for a real shift---can't hurt and it feels allot better in the meanwhile than succumbing to despair.

If I were you guys, I'd look to what's happening in Pakistan. Now, that's interesting. As is the break-out of the prisoners in Afghanistan. I won't go any further in case I sound like those I was criticising above!
Here in Australia, I'm kind of looking forward to the whole thing. I've given up smoking and said I'd start hanging around in pubs and smoking again when WWIII breaks out. Why was Carnaby shot? Has there been any investigation of his death? As for the ports. Well all of our ports are open to any terrotists from any country that wishes to unload weapons of all varieties. Bush never did anything to check either our ports or our borders. The whole 9/ll was clearly staged for Bush's war and he knew it and avoided doing anything for homeland security. It's been a big joke, a big lie, and a big heist by this Bush crime family and the Democrats still sit on their ass while Pelosie rules with an iron fist.

The way I read it, even a serious effort to get impeachment 'on the table' is sufficient cause to declare ML.

Lots of folks here seem to credence a massive, over the top, assault on the body politic by the rulers of evil. If you believe that, then your spectrum of responses narrows considerably.
1) Get out of the US as quickly as possible. Emigrate to Cuba, Venezuela, Bolivia, or wherever else you feel might provide sanctuary and opposition going forward.
2) Maintain principles of non-violence and be prepared to die in great numbers to bring this thing down. At some point, the apparatus of force breaks down when forced to kill its own people, including relatives and friends. Build local and national groups who think as you do in the most public ways possible emphasizing your commitment to non-violence. Publicize every arrest or death, welcoming each as increasing your voice and influence. Begin to utilize foreign Web servers through virtual private networks, and develop secure private communications lines. PGP plus obscure venues such as usenet's alt.test are likely best choices here. The implementation of a Conelrad type system of changing ip addresses is another possibility.
3) Prepare to fight a war in the streets near term. Obtain the best weaponry you can afford and find. Learn to use it. Learn to improvise weapons from easily available materials and stockpile those materials. Organize locally with only trusted friends. Build a public face that is anonymous (reference ELF and ALF) but one which is easily mirrored (need a custom app for this, since the site is presumably databased) and ensure mirrors proliferate, and backup mirrors are ready to go whenever sites go down.
Regardless of which modality you choose for yourself, work alone or with others to define the enemy and his victims, detail his crimes, and find whatever ground you can to stand in solidarity with these victims. At the same time articulate the changes you feel are necessary. People are inspired by a vision, not by portents of doom. So define the better world, Possible, as well as you and your comrades can do. Be as comprehensive, detailed and specific on all these things as you like. While a complete and powerful document is ideal, there is another sort of effectiveness that arises from the blooming of a 1000 flowers. Publish these documents here and elsewhere on the net where it is possible to do so. There are many available sites right now.
Bottom-line is that if you believe the more odious predictions or proffer them, you have no ground unless you are willing to get out, be imprisoned or killed, and/or take up arms. If this is your POV and you fail to adapt one of these three approaches, you are worse than the sheeple who think things are rosy.
A false flag attack is the neocon's ace in the hole and may have already been played once. Now, it has become their only means to retain power and sweep away what remains of the republic. They have revealed themselves to be virtual demonic entities, traitors, undeterred by the prospect of mass murder and madness to further their aims. They are no different than other terrorists excepting only their access to vast military resources and nuclear weapons.
Jack37 nailed it when he noted that when the incoming president is in office the right will suddenly be for "constitutional law" and "legislative process" and "limited executive powers." I think that is true if the incoming administration is not Republican and not under the spell of the neo-con madmen who have subverted our expectations of humanity.
We're always talking now about how our democracy is dying or dead and it's because of the R's or D's or Bush and company or all of the above, but there are way too many who are complicit in the destruction of our personal liberties. In this country we seem to believe in our inherent goodness and the "fact" that we could never be duped to be the bad guys or do anything that wasn't righteous and God-supported. Any idea that suggests otherwise is labeled conspiracy or looney or anti-american. We believe that propaganda is something that happens in other countries to "less intelligent" people. We always see right through propaganda here and our leaders would never lie to us and if they do, some patriotic soul would sound the alarm and the evil doers would be caught. What is truly scary is the amount of people who dismiss historical happenings and the experiences of other populations through out history and other lands. When laws are passed to make it legal to "prevent" drug use in the work place by allowing you to forcefully be tested or lose your job whether you have ever even used drugs or not, we ignore the fact that that is essentially search without cause and a violation of guaranteed freedoms. When laws are passed that allow you to be pulled over randomly to "prevent" drunk driving whether you drink or not, that is search without cause and a violation of guaranteed freedoms. Many more examples are available from designating "enemy combatants" to censoring unfavorable media, to penning protesters into "free-protest zones" away from that being protested, etc. , but the point is propaganda is used to convince people that our work places will be better if we use these tactics to protect us and drunk drivers will disappear if we use these tactics to protect us and terrorists/communists/minorities will not attack us in our beds if we wage war and denigrate or exclude foreigners, and if all those reasons fail, it's to make children safer. If we are coerced into not trusting virtually everyone around us for whatever reason, then it is very difficult to come together and talk and share and come to common consensus and action about the things that affect us. We are helping in the gradual, fascist takeover of ourselves. We fear this and we fear that and we're made to fear this and we're encouraged to fear that and pretty soon the place is so scary that whatever anyone can do to protect us is ok. Look at the bigger picture and how the same processes are used by those in power in other countries and other times to achieve domination and more power until they are powerful enough to not care what the people think; the people power is then gone. This little rant could go on for pages, but as long as we allow ourselves to be dragged into the paranoid world of fear and mistrust that fuels the fantasies and longings of demagogues and sociopaths, we will definitely go down the road to self-destruction that has happened to all empires and dictatorships through out history.
Um, we have to stop with the dates, August 15th, July 4th or whatever. Every couple of months someone trots out a date and says such and such will happen and lo and behold the date passes and nothing happens. This is no different than the crazy fundamentalist Christian wackjobs who are trying to predict Armageddon. I look at this plethora of dates as the boy who cried wolf syndrome. The US and the Saudi's desperately need to find a way to cut Saudi oil output without crashing the world financial markets. Once it becomes absolutely clear that Saudi oil is in the steep decline that it must eventually go into all financial bets are off as the world tries to figure out what to do with millions of big box stores, auto repair shops and tire and stereo sellers.
The 9-11 attack(by Saudi's note) and the Iraq war were a failed attempt to do this by diverting Iraqi oil through Saudi Arabia and then selling it. The Iraqi's refuse to co-operate.
The new plan should look something like this:
A major oil importing port is destroyed by the hijacking and detonation of a LNG tanker next to a refinery. This forces two things; an attack on Iran due to convienently discovered Iranian passports in a Motel 6 and mandatory and immediate fuel rationing.
The attack on Iran mysteriously destroys all sorts of things but not the oil port or the missile launcher that heavily damages Saudi Arabia's main shipping facility. The Straights of Hormuz are closed but rapidly cleared by US Navy demolition teams.
The result of all this would be that the world would go on a new reduced fuel regime with rationing in the first world and price driven demand destruction in the developing world. The GOP would get control of the Congress and the Presidency due to staged events that make it appear John McCain is in control. Vice President Jeb Bush takes office in July 2009 when McCain resigns due to health problems. US financial weakness is papered over in the following chaos by rapid changes of paper money and/or other means of diversion.
It would be like a huge car crash where the people who caused the crash emerge with new detailed, Mercedes. Things won't happen exactly like this but it will be close.
The "peaceful and constitutional succession to a new administration" seems kind of remote, given the quality of the "prospective" nominees (Obama's AIPAC biz, Senator McCain). And is it kind of creepy that there's a big

Once again, I think the most likely scenario is for Israel to do a small pre-emptive airstrike on Iran's nuclear project. Iran will then retaliate against Israel and US troops in Iraq. This, in turn, will justify the US to enter the war and do its "shock and awe" attack on the Iranian military and civilian infrastructure. They won't have to invade. It will simply decapitate Iran's military threat--but not without some damage being inflicted around the Middle East. Indeed, I fully expect it to turn into a major regional war giving Israel the opportunity to blast both Syria and Lebanon back to the dark ages. Hatred against Israel and the US will increase proportional to the damage and civilian suffering.
Impeachment proceedings will tie their hands and that in itself would be great. I do believe that once started, it would succeed because there is so much to impeach them on. Just start it and it will happen!

If the Democratic House members backed impeachment, it would probably result in Bush being driven from office. Once evidence was presented in a trial in the Senate, it is likely that very few Senators would risk their political careers by voting that Bush is innocent.

Tommytoons, I am scared too. My plan is to keep a low profile, pay attention to what I am doing, and keep my courage screwed up. When it comes time to do the right thing it's not likely to be safe or popular or easy.

If we start a war with Iran it will probably go like this: Isreal will hit Iran's nuclear sites and Iran will retaliate. The US will enter the war to protect Isreal. Impeachment is not a 'political' choice. It is a solemn duty to the nation that each member of Congress has sworn to perform when its required. Thoughts on how it effects the next election are meaningless. For members of the House, thoughts on how the Senate will vote are meaningless.
When a President has exceeded his authority under the Constitution, it is required of the members of Congress that they impeach such a President as a part of upholding this oath to uphold and defend our Constitution.
The whole thing to realize about Kucinich's impeachment bill is that its too late.
The Democratic leadership pledged before the last election that Bush would not be impeached. They've successfully run out the clock.
To me, this is the only reason why DK is even permitted to do this now. In fact, why now? is the question that jumps to mind when seeing this. Few if any of the charges he lays are recent. Most happened years ago. So, why wasn't DK on the floor of the House last year doing this? The only answer I can come up with is that the Dem leadership wouldn't allow it.
Now its perfect for the Dems. They get some cheap headlines critical of Bush. And they don't have their names attached to they let any opponents attack DK instead of them? And it is indeed way too late for anything useful to come of it.
Except, there should be a precedent established. Even if its too late, as a message and a warning to future power-hungry Presidents we should impeach Bush even if it only happens on the last day of his term. So, don't get me wrong, I've favored a start of impeachment for a long, long time.
To me, when you state that it is too late, which is true, you should be asking why is it happening only now when it is too late? And, why didn't it happen earlier, like early in this Congress, when it wouldn't be too late? Warning, asking such questions might lead to the realization that the Dem leadership has been actively protecting Bush and actively working to make sure he finished his term of office.
I'm deeply concerned, indeed frightened that we have sunk so low in this country to the point where I see us going more and more towards a Hitler like government. People thought the theft of our government ended when Bush was appointed president by the partisan supreme court in December 2000. Then they thought it ended when Bush stole the Ohio vote to defeat John Kerry. The next time people of our country will think the theft of our government ended is after invocation of NSPD-51 between now and the scheduled election.

The Constitution itself declares that the penalty for public officials who are impeached and convicted shall extend no further than removal from office and forfeiture of future federal financial benefits. Future criminal prosecution for the same high crimes or misdemeanors is authorized, but that would be an entirely separate proceeding in an ordinary federal District Court like any other criminal prosecution.
The idea that the House and Senate could both act an any of Dennis Kuchinich's proposed articles of impeachment prior to Bush and Cheney being term limited out in January 2009 is extremely far fetched. Sure, Conyers should start the investigative process and hold hearings so that whistle blowers can step forward or be subpoenaed forward. But don't hold your breath that this exercise would accomplish anything meaningful beyond adding some fuel to the fall 2008 partisan bonfires.
I see no reason why the new Congress after January 2009 can't launch a whole series of needed investigations into war profiteering, warrantless NSA wiretapping, torture, rendition, obstruction of the 911 Commission investigation, systematic abuse of the National Security Act's standards on classified materials (ie., "fixing intelligence around the policy"), and other related crimes. The Department of Justice, with a new Attorney General, could then indict and prosecute former office holders under already existing federal felony statutes.
The time for impeachment to have been put squarely on the table was right after the November 2006 elections, but that's now water under the bridge. Dennis Kuchinich certainly deserves our praise and support for his current effort. I share your anger, but say don't despair.
There are plenty of legal tools left in the toolbox to use after January of 2009, and plenty of time to use them, if the political will is there, and the facts are developed in appropriate Congressional hearings.
If your goal is deterrence of future Presidential lawlessness, impeachment and conviction of Bush, Cheney, or anybody else at a Senate trial is neither a necessary, nor even a sufficient remedy, as I see it at this point in time.

With this kind of authority granted him by Congress we all need to contact our Elected Officials in the Senate and The House and demand they rescind the "Declaration of Emergency by Reason of Certain Terrorist Attacks" under the authority of the National Emergencies Act. We need to let them know we are serious about the Articles of Impeachment Dennis Kucinich has introduced in the House and Congressman Wexler into the Judiciary Committee... if "We The People" stay quiet, we get no where and will, as Demonstorm said, "say bye-bye to our democracy" as well as our liberty and freedoms. We also need to petition them to rescind the FBI's authority to detain any US Citizen who stands up for the Consititution..
The short answer to the article's final questions are all the same: no.
The ridiculous and oft-repeated argument - by both Rethugs and Dumbocrats alike - that impeachment is a "waste of time because there is no way a majority of Senators would convict Bush" is the key to why nothing will ever be done. Everyone - and I do mean everyone - misses the bigger picture. And that is that if Congress doesn't impeach these criminals NOW -while they are still able to be impeached - and begin investigations into all the long, long list of crimes and abuses of office and Constitution-shredding and abuses of power - then a precedent will be established for every President and Congress to come in the future:
Namely that it is OK to shred the Constitution, it is OK to curtail civil liberties, it is OK to break the law, to illegally wiretap American citizens, to arrest and indefinitely detain anyone, anywhere in the world, without a trial, to use signing statements to ignore laws passed by Congress, to commit torture on detainees, etc, etc. Only by shedding the bright light of impeachment investigations on these criminals - whether it actually results in removal of office or not - will their crimes become daily news stories, and the American sheeple finally have no choice but to admit they elected - twice - a criminal mafia cabal into the highest office of the land. The impeachment proceedings would expose tons of evidence and new information about crimes already committed, and most likely other crimes we know nothing about yet. They would set a very loud precedent to all future administrations and Congresses: you are NOT above the law. You can try doing the shit Bush did, but by God you will be called on it and have it all exposed to the light of day.
Without impeachment....future presidents can literally do anything they want and get away with it: because we let Bush do so. And then we can really say bye-bye to our democracy.
It's not just impeachment that is off the table . . . it's sanity itself. Thank you, Pelosi/Reid and nearly all congressional Democrats. War is the total negation of rational behavior and that is exactly what and who George Wanker Bush is . . . he is the Death Wish; he is self-destruction. But don't worry, America; you can still scratch your ass with your right hand and pick your nose with your left.
