Climate Change Protesters Hijack Coal Train
Climate change campaigners hijacked a train carrying coal to Britain's biggest power station this morning, swarming on to the roof of its 20 huge trucks.
The 40 protesters stopped the regular delivery service to Drax in Yorkshire disguised as railway workers in yellow warning jackets and waving red flags, having read up on standard railway safety rules.
See the video. Hear the audio.
The ambush took place at an iron girder bridge over the river Aire between the villages of Gowdall and Hirst Courteney at 8am GMT. One group then used the bridge girders and climbing equipment to scale the 12ft high trucks. They hoisted a huge banner reading "Leave it in the ground" - referring to the coal destined for the power station's furnaces. The protesters carried food, water and even a portable lavatory with the intention of being able to remain on board for several days.
As the driver of the EWS train radioed for advice, a second group of protesters used shovels which they had also brought with them to start emptying the gravel-like power station coal on to the track. Police arrived half-an-hour later and sealed off the area, after calls from motorists stuck at a level crossing which was closed as a safety precaution.
A lone police constable was initially instructed to stay at the level crossing 500 yards from the train, but he was soon reinforced by other North Yorkshire officers. They sealed off the bridge from both sides, while the driver stayed in his cab.
"We are ready to stay here for as long as Gordon Brown and the government keep burning polluting fuel in these power stations," said one of the protesters before clipping climbing ropes to the train's wheels and the bridge girders. Although flimsy, the web would risk damage to the train or bridge if any attempt was made to drive off.
The raiders initially lay concealed on the edge of track as two earlier trains took supplies into Drax, whose eight vast cooling towers are guarded by coils of barbed wire. The power station was the scene of a spectacular but unsuccessful siege two years ago by Climate Camp, the group behind today's action.
The rooftop group included one woman protester dressed as a canary - the traditional warning of dangerous pollution down a coal mine. She said: "The government and the country needs a warning," before fixing on an orange cardboard beak to go with her bright yellow feather coat.
Commuters in the early morning rush hour included an engineer at Drax who was cycling to work and had to stop at the Hirst Courteney level crossing. He said: "There are interesting arguments to be had, but at the end of the day, these people use electricity like the rest of us, don't they."
The Drax line is likely to be closed until the protesters leave, and safety checks including the removal of the shovelled coal are expected to disrupt supplies to the power station for several days afterwards.
Drax responded to the hijacking by defending their record, setting out details of emission cuts of an estimated 3m tonnes a year at a cost of £180m. The plant, which supplies 7% of Britain's electricity, is improving burning efficiency, says the company, and increasingly using renewable biofuels.
Melanie Wedgbury, head of external affairs at the plant, said: "We are the largest power station but also the cleanest and most efficient. It's only because we are the biggest that we produce the most CO2. For every unit of electricity we generate, we generate less CO2 than any other of the coal-fired stations."
The campaigners promised more protests later this summer, when another power station will face an attempt to close it down, similar to the Drax Climate Camp in 2006. One of the coal-shovellers on top of a freight wagon said: "Last year was Heathrow, this year it'll be a coal-fired power station because those are the two big things, aviation fuel and burning coal."

Looks like these people got fed up with petitions, protest marches, call-ins, candle lighting, peace vigils, and loving waves of kindness.
It takes a lot of courage to put it all on the line to protect what one truly cares about.
Undoubtedly they all will be treated as terrorists.
Hats off to them. Very inspiring!

The average government only has two gears: Either the protesters are little old ladies in tennis shoes, citizens advocating some cause, and they get a parking ticket, or else they're either "terrorists" or it used to be they were always "communists" but that's passe.
I have heard one case of the U.S. government waffling wildly between the two. Fathers Karl Cabot and Dan Berrigan were arrested for pouring blood on a helicopter and tossed in jail without even the hope of making bail. In jail, the two priests got to talking with all the guys. Martin Luther King Day rolled around and the entire jail stayed in their cells. Prison strike for better conditions.
The prison administration couldn't run the joint without prisoner help. Suddenly Karl and Dan were hauled back into court without warning and given $1000 bail to make. They said no thanks, and were sent back to jail. That didn't sit well with the prison administration, so Karl and Dan were hauled back into court again and given personal recognizance if they would promise to show up for trial. Karl and Dan said no thanks, they couldn't make that promise, so they were sent back to jail.
That didn't sit well with the prison administration, so Karl and Dan were hauled over to the prison's main gate and without a word spoken, were kicked out of prison for bad behavior.
Just now reading Howard Zinn's People's History and I've been inspired by the courage of so many "workers" during the trying times of the 1890's and early 1900's. These folks were willing to put their life on the line, and if not for their efforts whose to say whether conditions would have ever improved. Probably not.
Here is a snippet from page 326 of People's History quoting Percy Bysshe Shelley's "Mask of Anarchy"...
"Rise like lions after slumber
In unvanquishable number!
Shake your chains to earth, like dew
Which in sleep had fallen on you--
Ye are many, they are few!"
Awesome.
And now for your up to date methane forecast.
The holes in the Arctic Ocean ice just north of central Canada are forming one great big hole. This region is about 4 days ahead of last year's record-breaking ice melt. Off the coast of Western Siberia is partly open water and partly soup, and is about a week ahead of last year's record-breaking ice melt. However, the ocean off of central Siberia is at least a week behind.
The problem is, open water absorbs the sun's heat, and a few more months of this heat could affect the methane clathrates in the shallow ocean water underneath these open water areas.
The rooftop group included one woman protester dressed as a canary - the traditional warning of dangerous pollution down a coal mine. She said: "The government and the country needs a warning," before fixing on an orange cardboard beak to go with her bright yellow feather coat.
there is no known defense against determined monty python fans in canary suits with a copy of the British Rail Safety Regulations, a flask of tea and a portable loo...deadly...
Wow...courageous folks! I expect we'll see more direct action like this globally. Loud applause!
I definitely respect their enthusiasm and desire to execute a plan. Although they will likely be described as some variation of "eco-terrorists", their message will be heard. Btw, if the government is reading this, I recall my previous statement.
... And so it begins.

You have a choice.
Die on your feet.
Or live on your knees.
From his grave somewhere in the Arizona desert, Edward Abbey is smiling.
Right on.
chrisB, the railway workers should be happy that they weren't attacked with fresh fruit.
Seriously, the punishment that will be visited on these courageous souls will be completely out of proportion to any harm that they may have caused - which is none.

"Seriously, the punishment that will be visited on these courageous souls will be completely out of proportion to any harm that they may have caused - which is none."
i dunno wait and see...these sort of home grown protests tend to get handled quite lightly
within reason ...as the public no matter what their point of view enjoys the surreal aspects of them..after all it's hard to get too angry at some-one whilst they're dressed as a canary...lol
and it's the british public delaying a train...normaly it's the other way round..every-one enjoys the irony of that...
Just imagine the Homeland Lunatic response to such a protest in, what McCrazy keeps calling, "the greatest nation on Earth."
Maybe a nice long stay in a Halliburton "special program" detention center after being branded "eco-terrorists," (whom the FBI still - seriously - considers the Number One domestic "terror" threat)... FOX and Limbaugh and the other cult members blaming Obama for organizing the protest, then calling for the public lynching of all America-hating canary-costume wearers... Cheney/Bush issuing an "executive order" that strips all "illegal eco-terrorist enemy combatants" of their US citizenship... a no-bid contract to Blackwater for armed "energy" protection and a bit of illegal e-mail reading... and, of course, the rest of Big Corp Media devoting lots of time to "military analysts" who warn of mushroom clouds unless the eco-terrorist threat is destroyed...
PAULK
r u taking the piss??? if not, source please.........
DAMN.....Now THAT'S D I R E C T A C T I O N at its finest! If American's could be so courageous things would change....don't expect "change" in '09 from the elected hacks!
Paul K: If your story is for real, I love it. I love it. Way to go "fathers"! Ha, ha, ha, ha. I'm laughing so hard. Really great! Man, I love that story. They really deserve a big hand of applause! Wooohoo!
Great job.
Us americans need to come up with some ideas on how to stop our war economy. Maybe we can meet up for a townhall. Since we love our cars... let's bring them too. Let's meet on our local highways. Just pull into the fast lane, and the next lane, and the next and put your car in 'park'. Then we can commence the townhall meeting to discuss how to stop the war economy.
frank1569 -- Naw, they'd just be picked off by Blackwater sharpshooters, then exposives would be "found" on them. Seriously.
Are we finally becoming 'unmanageable'? Well good for us!
Kissinger, in the 1970's, stated to the National Security Council the top priority of American Foreign Policy should be reduction of world population by 2 billion people (especially tageting the Mid-East for resources there...oil), and other CFR neo-CON types would like the global population reduced to just 500 million people. I've even heard these 500 million would live primarily at/near the poles (I guess after they melt all the ice there).
What these butchers fail to understand is with air degraded by fossil fuel usage (increased CO2, methane, mercury, and more), acidified oceans devoid of phytoplankton (primary CO2 sequestration vehicle), deforested Amazon basin (source of 25% of the world's oxygen), irratic & violent weather patterns, and an earth rife with uncountable particles of deadly depleted uranium, this reduced population walled fortress (gated community) will more than likely not be the heavenly utopia they presume/assume. A person might cling tenaciously to a gold ingot while plunging to the ocean floor, but it still won't prevent them from drowning.
Whatever one chooses to call them, eco-terrorist or concerned moral citizen activists, they are certainly global patriots, and deserve our kudos for their effort.
Goddamn! This is the best news I've heard in months!!!!!! Fantastic!
This is for [intelligent] readers, particularly those who really do possess and exercise a serious [civic conscience].
"Global Warming: A Convenient Lie
by Andrew G. Marshall
Global Research, March 15, 2007"
http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=5086
It's not to say that I'm at all for environmental destruction, for I'm totally against that, except when it's done prudently, without exaggeration, so on [limited] scale, etcetera. We MUST be caretakers of or for Nature, and I'll never want to be anything else; I don't like to abuse my "Mother", and I don't like it when others do, either.
But CO2 does not cause global warming; it's the opposite, global warming causes increases in CO2. I'm with the views of the real and many world scientists who say that it's been found that the SUN is heating and that this is causing global warming and climate changes, of very serious scale, on other planets of our solar system, and all at the same time. So as the Earth's climate warms, we get increases in CO2.
I don't think the above article mentions increases, unless a different term is used to represent methane; but I expect that it's to be considered as included. If global warming causes thawing of permafrost where methane has been kept in "safe-keeping", in frozen earth, and the warming will cause the gas to be released, then ... voila, methane will be released; I believe, but haven't performed the tests necessary to verify this.
But neither it nor CO2 causes global warming; it's the reverse that is scientifically sensible, realistic or reality. In science courses were learned of three states of substances or matter, the frozen or solid, followed by liquid, and then gas, as the temperature keeps rising. And it's always the changes in temperature that causes these changes, not the opposite.
Triton is warming and what was once frozen nitrogen is become released gas; and it's only one of the planets mentioned in the above article.
After "intelligent readers" get finished laughing at the post above re Global Warming as "a lie" . ..
Let's get back to celebrating these protesters ---
and REMEMBER the elite are working to bring America back
to using coal. We don't know what happened in the SECRET
meetings between Cheney and Energy -- but it was obviously
not good for America. Good for Cheney and oil industry
and those private few who control our natural resources!
Let's NATIONALIZE OIL ---
and get ELECTRIC CARS on our roads ---
See the movie: "Who Killed The Electric Car?"

After "intelligent readers" get finished laughing at the post above re Global Warming as "a lie" . .. "
HEH, BUTT OR HALF-CHEEK -FOR-BRAINS, I never said global warming's a lie to any degree whatsoever; and it could not be clearer than it is in my above post. What I said, and which you'd know if you really read the post, assuming your so-called conscience is accompanied by a rational mind; well, what I said is that it is not CO2 that causes global warming, but the reverse, and it's a scientific fact.
It's very easy to prove. After all, even people with elementary, basic scientific abilities can empirically prove that as the temperature drops, matter or material becomes more solidified; while, as temperature rises, solid matter transforms to liquid and eventually, with enough heat, and the amount required varies depending on the material in question, the gaseous stage is reached. It is global warming that's causing increases of gases in the atmosphere; not the other way around.
If you see that as a claim that global warming is supposedly not happening, then what you call a 'conscience' clearly is half up your ass; only a half being where it's supposed to be.
WE SIMPLY ARE NOT THE CAUSE OF GLOBAL WARMING! It couldn't be more simply explained, only it's definitely worth reading Andrew Marshall's article; not only is it very worthwhile to do so, it's also important.
I reemphasize the value of Andrew Marshall's article, and I KNOW why I do this. He's not a dummy, but did an excellent work with the article, while writing and thinking well evidently is a regular characteristic with or about him.
He's in political science and that's not physical science, but his article refers to plenty of real scientists, what they say; and that's along with plenty of supporting resource links. This is the first part, instead of representing what the whole article says; however, the whole is of serious value.
THEN he excellently moves on to addressing all of the political scaremongering that's been going on in the U.S., Canada, U.K. and EU. And this includes the many different ways these govts are deciding to tax The Peoples ever more, and very serious taxation it is. The drive is to make the rich ever richer, NOT TO SOLVE global warming! Andrew Marshall excellently makes this point, and it is very important.
You might prefer to shovel coal out of a train wagon, while claiming that it's because burning coal causes global warming, which is complete NONSENSE. Other people prefer to oppose mountain-top removal and other forms of bs destruction of the Earth's environment for reasons based on scientific fact and sanity. Nonsense is NOT sanity!
Other people, evidently not people like yourself, really care about the huge numbers of humans who are starving, and which again is due to the imperialist West's PIG elites, and all of their scams, etc. But you don't care about humanity; you just like protesting based on claims that are provably BS.
I don't need stupidly based protests in order to be against mountain top destruction, vast forest destruction, ... to unacceptable extents. I don't need irrationally based protests which are provably based in such terms in order to be against real toxic pollution, which CO2 IS NOT. NO, I will be against these acts against Nature, which are also acts against humanity, since we can't separate ourselves from Nature, for rational reasons that ARE scientifically provable.
I don't have a problem with these protesters in the UK, but their and my reasons starkly differ. Their reasons, as per the article anyway, is that burning coal causes global warming, and that's BS!
When you wish to fight for a cause, then try to do it in rational terms; instead of nonsensically arguing and leaving yourself open to being proven wrong, and only because you used irrational, instead of rational arguments.
So, 'half-assed conscience', how about developing a [complete] and rational one.
Oops, forgot; you prefer to campaign with the goal of starving humanity ever more.
Oh, and btw, the reason I said the initial post was for 'intelligent readers' is because people evidently aren't paying any attention to the crucial article by Stephen Lendman and which I've spent two days telling people here is CRUCIAL, and information that you're not going to easily find elsewhere; maybe taking even months before you do. It's CRUCIAL, HIGHLY CRITICAL to read his article. Given no one has said anything about checking and reading it, I therefore only care to state that I am addressing only 'intelligent readers', for only they know to pay attention to views and alerts provided by other people.
Most of you people treat the War on Iraq, the whole GWoT, the major corruption of the U.S. govt, Pentagon, and so on as if it's not really important; by ignoring when people sound alerts about crucial matters to learn about, and additionally take the time to provide some intro. words highlighting some of the reason for why the information deserves IMMEDIATE ATTENTION.
Instead of reading such information, you prefer to view and read about people shoveling coal out of train wagons and having fun in the process.
People with real 'conscience' pay attention to the most critical matters, before neglecting them and, instead, playing kiddy.
Thanks, Conscience, and I absolutely agree with EVERYTHING you said, especially the NATIONALIZE OIL comment. Does it make any sense for an industry so vital to national defense & the financial security of our citizens to have this industry in the hands of a very few private citizens? NOT!!! I'd go even farther, though; nationalize the whole damned energy industry from top to bottom!!!
" PaulMagillSmith June 13th, 2008 11:58 pm
Thanks, Conscience, and I absolutely agree with EVERYTHING you said, especially the NATIONALIZE OIL comment. "
Well if you think that we are the cause of global warming, then maybe you and 'conscience' can spend some warming time together; given neither of you has a rational explanation for global warming's cause.
And why nationalize only OIL, instead of all natural resources that humans exploit in corporate or business terms? It doesn't need to be done with only OIL, and if you're going to start nationalizing natural resources, then why choose only one, when many other people will call for more?
Why don't you apply some real critical thinking, instead of only the narrow and superficial kind?
Forest products, water, electric utilities, ... all can be nationalized as much as oil can! If you dream that Big Oil and all of the politicians in those pockets will be easier to conquer than the corporations of these other resources, then you are indeed dreaming.
Mike, and Conscience, I've seen many posts by both of you and respect you both even when we aren't in agreement, but this time, Mike, I think you are way off base. The IPCC has recently concluded that global warming is fact, it is human caused, and the primary culprit looks like emmissions (particularly CO2) caused by burning fossil fuels. Don't have a link readily at hand, but it is easy to find with Google.
As far as your comments regarding solid, liquid, gas go, all I can say is in some instances materials don't always act true to form. A good example is common water. Try putting a glass of it in a freezer for awhile. Most substances shrink when cooled, but when you find the glass cracked after it freezes it's because water expands. People in denial of the evidence before their eyes would probably come up with something like, "Well, the glass weakened when cooled".
Deniers often fail to recognize burning fossil fuels has been PROVEN to cause acid rain, which kills marine life including plankton/phytoplankton, the number one source for carbon sequestration on the planet. At some point an irreversable 'greenhouse effect' kicks in which collapses the atmosphere much the same as that on the unliveable planet Venus. Right or wrong about certain particulars, can we afford to take the chance we might be wrong? Even if we are wrong about CO2 causing global warming, or the reverse, we still end up with a more liveable atmosphere & better health overall.
Dig the rain gear on these guys.
What's it made out of, hempseed oil?
Home-spun flax?
Or carbon-producing petroleum by-products?
How did they get to the train line, ox-cart?
Or, as the passer-by in the story said they use electricity too don't they?
If you're gonna interrupt something people believe -however wrongly- to be a public service you better do a better job of avoiding obvious hypocrisy in your message and action than these people did.
That's if you actually want people to support you, and to spark change.
If your just on an Ego-Trip I guess you needn't worry, huh?
-matti.
Matti: I don't think any of the protesters thought that the coal would not end up at the power station and be burnt, and I am sure they all use their fair share of electricity. What they were trying to do was send a message to those overpaid asswipes who are supposed to be representing us that we want to use better alternatives -- ones that already exist, and have for a long time.
Mike Corbeil
Because substances undergo solid->liquid->gas transitions by added heat, ergo global warming is not caused by CO2? Absurd. Please tell me you're not that much of a moron. Even if global warming is a hoax that's the lamest argument I've ever heard against it.
without getting embroiled in an argument overly..the real issue regarding CO2 is
hinged on the "green house" effect....where by sunlight/energy/heat that normaly would be reflected back out into space becomes trapped by the upper atmosphere and increases the ambient temperature..
it's the reality or no of the green house effect that's the central debate...
haven't seen any argument that has discredited the concept of the green house effect...after all one only needs to step into a green house to get some minor appreciation of the possibilites..
course these days who can tell...
and given that it isn't a bad idea to prepare for the worst yet hope for the best..it is wiser to prepare for the worst and be wrong...than to prepare for the best and be wrong...could be wrong about that tho..
who said that? not me gov...honest gov..lol
Matti-
I think there's a distinction here that has to be made: That between the personal changes needed and the cultural changes. Both are needed. But it's unfair to discredit the actions of those who are taking direct action, risking their lives even, by their attacking cultural infrastructure. They are not the problem. Individuals are not the problem. It's not that personal choices don't matter. It's that large gov't-mental and corporate forces are benefiting hugely by pushing the bogus argument that step by step and one by one we can make significant changes, "especially if we do it all together now kiddies!!" In the meantime, those huge forces of industrial and corporate infrastructure, like coal industry, like oil industry, like agriculture, lay the planet to waste.
We individuals did not create this culture. We live in it. It means we live in a complex situation, all of us with blood on our hands. Suppose we choose to live doing EVERYthing we can to fight the forces that do not and will not change without a fight--Is it our fault that plastics and cars and electricity exist? We should be working to make it impossible for them to be produced, which has HUGE implications, which even these protesters know they have no way of knowing for sure how to live in another way...
Suppose we choose to use these plastics and these electrical infrastructures and these cars and everything else produced in the industrial infrastructure, IN ORDER TO STOP it FROM KILLING US AND THE REST OF THE PLANET?
Here's a quote from Kirkpatrick Sale that speaks to this point:
"The whole individualist what-can-you-do-to-save-the-earth guilt trip is a myth. We, as individuals, are not creating the crises, and we can't solve them. Take our crazy energy consumption. For the past 15 yrs the story has been the same every year: individual consumption--residential, by private car, and so on-is never more than about a quarter of all consumption; the vast majority is commercial, industrial, corporate, by agribusiness and government. So, even if we all took up cycling and wood stoves it would have a negligible impact on energy use, global warming, and atmospheric pollution. I mean, sure, go ahead and live a responsible environmental life; recycle, compost, ride a push-bike; but do it because it is the right, moral thing to do--not because it is going to save the planet.
If we really want to understand why this happened we have to ask ourselves another question: "Why is it that we seem willing to live with the threat of apocalypse rather than trying seriously to alter a world where consumption, of anything, is seen as unrelieved virtue, production of anything, is regarded as a social and economic necessity, and more, of anything (like children or cars or chemicals or PhDs or golf courses or recycling centers), is unquestioningly accepted?"
My point, Matti, et al, is that yes, I drive a car and use goretex and wear shoes, and I am part of the problem. I don't care how "obvious" it is. Why should I pretend I don't live in a culture that's killing us all, and all others nonhuman?
But these people, in this article, are demonstrating what it will take to stop the source that fuels the production and consumption and destruction cycle we are living in this culture... I applaud their courage and virtue. They need our support and help. All the personal change in the world, AT THIS POINT, will not stop them unless we stop them directly like this. Look at all the reports coming in: ten years, twenty years, thirty years--We don't have time to wait for the personal changes to have their effects.....
GREENSPARK
well said............i agree competely.
Matti, following-up on greenspark, i think it is kind-of like having to use your left hand to cut off your right hand because your right hand is sawing off your head....
coco:
That story was from personal memory, as related from another activist. You're better off not relying 100% on my memory. If you need to use the story, google Jonah House in Baltimore, call them up and ask.
Kudos to the protesters! Politicians evrywhere best be forewarned-protesters are to be taken seriously! People get tired of making phone calls and signing petitions. Hands-on direct action always works best! Kudos to the protesters!
Hats off to them!
The only thing they did wrong was stick around to get caught - making it harder for them to do it again.
Mike -
Get real. You post a 19 year-old political science student's very lame and poorly argued/written paper as proof that the overwhelming consensus of the scientific community is wrong? You're gonna have to do better than that, pal.
I do not believe these protesters will be treated as terrorists. Nor will the Spanish truck drivers. The French go on strike all the time and pretty much shut the place down without mass arrests. My husband is from France and I used to live there for a while. We were just talking about this last night -- how "acting out" is considered a citizen's right in Europe. But here, it is considered "homegrown terrorism". The discussion above proves that we do somehow all have this sense that direct action will only be met with harsh retaliation. Interfering with people making money I am pretty sure is punishable by firing squad in the good ol' USA.
~ FUNEOCONS ~
Your sense ( "that direct action will only be met with harsh retaliation" ) may be well regarded by many in the USA.
SO why might that be true?
Perhaps the massive investment in neoCON-job propaganda, has instilled enough fear in each of us to feel the "closeness of the sword" like DAMOCLES did ?
This perpetual state of FEAR, is created solely for devious purposes to control Americans. To lull them back into subservient and en-numbing sleep.
Remember how the Bilderberg's decided (Nov '02) that the EU would _n o t_ participate in the bu$h!t's 2nd Persian Gulf war, because they expected massive riots and thereby possible loss of the reigns of ( actually ) tenuous control ?
¿ "Bring 'em on", is what I've to say -- as how can our long term prospects get any worse ?
¿ If we must travel the fiery road of damnation, at least we NOW might have the possibility of peace at journey's end, isn't that worth it ?

It's very unlikely that even the cleanest coal plant is utilizing its waste energy (75% of input energy) in industrial processes. Until you hear the coal and nuke plants trumpeting their utilization of at least 2/3 of their waste energy, give them "no quarter".
It's atrocious that you could read 10 thousand articles on coal fire powered plants in this here major media, and not read one coal connected word in any of them, that word being mercury.
The oceans are OFFICIALLY POLLUTED by mercury so thick to make all of the most commonly consumed fish too dirty to eat with any regularity the word from medical officials. The mercury in the worlds oceans is the result of air pollution by coal fired power plants, coal being rich with mercury, coal fired steam turbines being allowed to operate without any bit of air filtering solution, rather full toxic content ejected by this dirtiest of fuels...
Just to add more confusion to the Global Warming debate, I will never forget when I was in high school I read this article in Popular Science which if I remember correctly stated that someone had done an experiment to see if the greenhouse effect was really caused in the commonly accepted fashion as found in science textbooks, which is that the sun's rays enter the greenhouse, heat up the vegetation which reradiates the energy as ultraviolet (or was it infrared?), but the glass does not let the ultraviolet(infrared?) rays through so it just heats up the interior of the greenhouse. This is what is known as the 'greenhouse effect'. But the article stated that after doing tests they found this was not really the cause. It was just that the sun heated up the interior of the green house and since it was enclosed, the heat couldn't escape. LOL Of course this was just one dumb little article and it was going against the grain of common scientific knowledge so even if it was true I expect it was quickly forgotten. I mean, do you realize how much it would cost to redo all those science textbooks and encyclopedias where they talk about the greenhouse effect. But the thing about global warming is, I can't see the motivation for convincing us that global warming is being caused by human activity. But I can certainly see the motivation for convincing us global warming is NOT happening due to human activity.
atelios - yeah, it seems as if that motivation (convincing us global warming is NOT happening due to human activity) seems to be fostered and put forth by those of the "status quo". Those who want things to stay the way they are --- but isn't it obvious, this is an impossibility.
Change, just like evolution, is undeniable.
