House Waves Off Impeachment Measure Against Bush
The House has voted to send articles of impeachment against President Bush to a committee that is not likely to hold hearings before the end of his term.
By 251-166, House members dispatched the measure to a committee on Wednesday - a procedure often used to kill legislation.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi long ago declared the prospects for impeachment proceedings "off the table."
Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, who ran for president earlier this year, insists that his resolution deserves more consideration. He spent more than four hours Monday night reading his 35 articles of impeachment into the record, including charges that Bush manufactured a false case for going to war against Iraq.
House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said Tuesday that the Democratic-led Congress was holding the Bush administration accountable and questioned spending time on impeachment in the "waning months of this administration's tenure."
An election looms in which every House seat, a third of those in the Senate and the presidency are up for grabs. House leaders are staunchly against spending the remaining time in the abbreviated legislative schedule on impeachment proceedings.
The House vote sent the impeachment articles to the House Judiciary Committee, chaired by Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., who had once vowed to hold impeachment hearings. He wouldn't immediately comment on the articles' prospects for hearings.
Democratic aides widely suggested those gauging the bill's prospects look to a precedent: the impeachment articles against Vice President Dick Cheney, which were sent to Conyers' committee in November. There's no evidence they will be considered before the Bush administration leaves office in January.
Those were Kucinich's, too. Republicans, seeing a chance to force Democrats into an embarrassing debate, voted to bring up the resolution. Democrats countered by pushing through a motion to scuttle the bill from the floor.
Kucinich's articles also charge Bush with failing to provide troops with vehicle armor, illegally detaining both foreign nationals and Americans, condoning torture, mishandling the government's response to Hurricane Katrina and undermining efforts to address global warning.
"It is imperative that members of Congress have a thorough opportunity to read the articles of impeachment and study the documentation," Kucinich said in a statement.

Show AllThis is on your head, Pelosi. You have made yourself complicit in these crimes because of your political cowardice.
You'll ALL be in handcuffs soon enough.
Pelosi will be remembered for helping Bush.
Just listened to him speaking and saying dipomatically, instead of diplomatically.
Figures.
The Framers must be spinning in their graves right now.
Please, everyone throw your support behind Cindy Sheehan. Send her money, or if you are in her district, vote for her. It is time to throw this incompetent political hack Pelosi out of office!
Pelosi is not a coward, she's a career criminal. It takes a lot of courage to be the leader of 'opposition' party and participate in so many crimes that you're supposed to be fighting against.
Cindy Sheehan where are you? Can you please vaporize this c**t from existence? Sorry for the foul language, but there's no other way to address Democrats.
The majority of Congress and the majority of this administration are:
1. on the take
2. political cowards
3. scared for their jobs
4. joined at the hip
5. all of the above
Take your pick.
Pelosi does deserve all the abuse she gets about this. But what's to stop any number of semi brave democrats from doing it anyway? speakers are not dictators. she said that immediately after we sent a majority to stop bush, and this was her response. all the other democrats coiulda, shoulda got a new speaker. Rose up n rebellion. Dennis himself coulda stood up the next day. And we the citizens too shoulda screamed the outrage we all felt. at pelosi's house like Code Pink, on the capital steps. i'm afraid we are all complicit.

To NOT act is an act in itself. And to not act, when chartered and sworn in accordance to oath to defend our country -- or even rigorously investigate the merits of such claims of violation against the laws of our country -- is betrayal, abandonment and cowardice.
I have lost both faith and respect -- not for the processes or people in our country -- but in the leaders. They have chosen to abandon America and the world this critical time of great, great need. Shame on them.
This guy Bush is poised to attach Iran, continues saber rattling and is still causing world problems. What more damage will he and Cheney be allowed in the next 6 months? Impeach the treasonous cowards now because that is your job- getting re-elected is not in your job description, just like normal people finding work isn't.

Wake up.
The US is no longer a democracy. It hasn't been since at least 2000.
The 'voice of the people' is nothing more than the barking of trained dogs now.
Once every four years, the Repubs and Dems stage an elaborately crafted PR stage show to fool you into thinking you have a say in how you are governed.
It's all a lie.
You have a choice.
Die on your feet.
Or live on your knees.
The g (old) p don't allow anything through the senate so nothing is likely to get done in the next few weeks... Rep. Conyers should hold to his word and start protecting the constitution, and we the people. Even if the senate lets them stay in office (minus a two-third vote), there's a record of the high crimes for the public to see and the next president to heed.
I just don't get it. Why don't the Democrats impeach?
As far as I'm concerned any Congressperson who didn't support the impeachment measures introduced by Congressmen Wexler and Kucinich is complicit with the Bush/Cheney crimes. They should all be voted out of office for refusing to do their constitutional duty. But not enough of the American electorate is motivated, so it won't happen, and we'll be stuck with a government that doesn't represent the best interests of the people.
The Dems won't impeach because they are complicit in enabling these war crimes to take place. Plus, they have their sights set on winning more seats in the House, Senate, and winning the Oval Office. They are asking their constituents to overlook the crimes the Bush Admin. has committed for better coming years. I am neither a Democrat nor Republican constituent. Overlook it, hell no!!!
As has been pointed out over and over - there is only one political party in this nation: The Death Party. It has a violent and reactionary right (Republicans) and a conservative and more polite right (Democrats). Neither one gives a goddamn about the constitution, human freedom and individual liberty and therefore, by extension, the future of the country. Whether Peolisi and Reid are simply the yellowest of yellow bellies and cowards, well scrubbed Machaivellis or are being paid off by the reactionary wing of The Death Party to keep impeachment "off the table" is immaterial. The product of The Death Party is death . . . death in Iraq, death in New Orleans, death of your pocket book, death of the future. Barack Obama is now the titular head of the conservative wing of The Death Party. When it comes to gauging who he really is, I'll put my money on death and not on hope. Your choice is to vote for him knowing his potential nominee for the Supreme Court won't be a Scalia or a Thomas; or vote your conscience for someone who cannot possibly win. Some choice! It's Mourning in America.
The answer to madcow's question is simple: AIPAC.

The title of this article should be "Democrats Collude With Bush Regime". I give Kucinich an "A" for effort.
What are we going to have to do to get Pelosi to move forward on this? How can we allow war criminals to stay in office and run our country? It's as if we were to tell Ted Bundy or the Green River Killer "Well, it's not OK what you did but we're not going to prosecute. Here, you can go free and kill and torture some more people." And Bush's crimes are way, way, worse. What's wrong with these people in Congress? Doesn't Pelosi want some kind of a future for her children, which she so proudly rubbed in our faces when she was made the speaker?
The people of California should start a recall movement for Pelosi if she keeps blocking a floor debate on impeachment to come up.
Interesting that impeachment is "off the table," but she has never said why.
Who is the greater danger to our country, the raging perps who seized power and led the US down this devastating criminal path, or the officials constitutionally charged with ending their crime spree who have had five years to bring them to justice and still refuse to do so, without explanation?
Democrats (and women Democrats) in the house and senate are clearly not part of the solution.
Could it be that they are the major problem? Aren't they worse than Repubs, because they pretend to be concerned with our country's fate?
I was excited when Pelosi first became Speaker of the House. But it seems that the comfort and perks of power have been more important to her than the responsibility of power. She's played the safe card while America continues to drown under incompetent, corrupt, and corporate-dominated leadership. As I write this note, I feel sorrow.
Pelosi needs to be petitioned out of office. Any elected official can be removed from office through petition. Pelosi needs to go.
I pray there is a strong Fifth Column in the Secret Service.
One comment yesterday suggested a popular move to a citizen's arrest. How would Pelosi respond? How would Obama respond? Their hands need to be forced.
they all feed from the same trough (military congressional complex) big oil, media control...PIGS...Pelosi's husband works for SAIC, one of the biggest contractors suckling off the taxpayers teat in Iraq....there's another woman running against Pelosi, who also deserves support...shirley G (something)...Pelosi needs to be DUMPED HARD....
Since the Invasions,as many as 1,260,000 Iraqis have been killed. Since the Invasions, as many as 4,000,000 Iraqis have been made homeless and now reside in Refugee Camps. Since the Invasions over 4,000 Americans have died. The American People know nothing about Afghanistan.
Congresses have helped Cheney/Bush Immunize American Soldiers, Mercenaries, and Civilian Contractors from any crimes committed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Soldiers have murdered unarmed civilians and that was OK. Mercenaries have murdered unarmed civilians and that was Ok. Civilian Contractors have defrauded the U.S. taxpayer of hundreds of billions of dollars and that was OK.
When you make laws that make crimes legal, you eliminated the "Rule of Law". When you make laws that destroy the Constitution of the United States, you have failed to execute your "Oath of Office" and should have been impeached.
Until the American People rise up against the Official Version of 9/11 and the Commission's Neo-Conservative Director, Philip Zelikow, who was in constant contact with the White House when writing the 9/11 Commission's Report, the "Occupation" of Iraq will continue and Iran will be attacked One item, World Trade Center #7 and its ommission, is enough to question the whole report. What happened to World Trade Center #7? Many believe and eyewitnesses claimed that it was demolished with explosives.
The oath of office for members of Congress as it stands reads, "I do solemnly swear [or affirm] that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God."
Looks like we've got some oath-breakers on our hands

Pelosi shattered the glass ceiling and promptly dismissed the Constitution. So much for the positive effect women would have on government!
Reid, Hoyer, and Conyers are just self serving corrupt creeps.
Can someone tell my why Michigan would return Conyers to office? Have there been any efforts there to replace him?
Vote for Cindy Sheehan. We need to boot Pelosi out of office. The Democratic enablers are much worse than the Republicans.
Bill Clinton- attempted (and nearly successful) impeachment for receiving a blowjob in the Oval Office.
George W. Bush- impeachment repeatedly denied in the face of overwhelming evidence of treason, war crimes and crimes against humanity.
I guess you Yanks are more afraid of sex than of death and violence.
Yes Galen, heinous war crimes and illegal mass murder for profit are not the stuff of impeachment!!! Sex however marshals America to it's bowels until the excrement is removed.
longingforsanity June 12th, 2008 12:54 pm ....A citizens arrest will take millions in DC...Let's get ready to MARCH!
Galen
You have a choice.
Die on your feet.
Or live on your knees.
Brilliant - One Dennis Kucinich has the courage to do the former. The rest are pathetic beggers at the corp trough, they sicken me and the rest of us Patiots. Jefferson, Washington, Madison, Franklin - are shaking their angry fists at these complicite cowards, and their eyes are filled with tears.
And yes, this sick country is more afraid of consensual sex then the consequences of theft and murder.
We deserve what's coming.
I am now done, finished with the Democratic Party, with Mz. Pelosi, Mr. Harry and the whole bunch. I totally agree with guliper, especially the part about 'on the take', but I also think that they are all being blackmailed. Not one of these people are holding up the constitution, therefore they are not doing their job and need to be held accountable. Oh, yeah, no one is every held accountable to anything anymore. They all need to go and the sooner the better. Until we have viable term limits this nonsense will continue until everyone in Congress has their deep pockets stuffed. For all practical purposes they might just as well go home.
Galen, they're not afraid of death as long as it's someone else's death, e.g. Iraqis.
tetti_tatti, I agree Pelosi is not a coward. She's an arrogant career criminal who is not afraid to go against what the majority of people want. What AIPAC and Israel want comes first with her.
Pelosi exemplifies politics as "the art of the possible." That's why she's made it possible for Baby Caligula to do whatever he damn well pleased during his despicable tenure in office.
DEAR NANCY PELOSI, DUE TO YOUR RECENT MOVE TO 'TABLE THE ARTICLES OF IMPEACHMENT' INTRODUCED BY KUCINICH, I THINK IT IS WAY PAST TIME FOR TRUTHFUL EXPLAINATIOS TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. IT OBVIOUSLY IS NOT BECAUSE YOU ARE TOO BUSY AS YOU HAVE CERTAINLY NOT ACCOMPLISHED MUCH SINCE YOUR SELECTION AS SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE. YOUR JOB HAS BEEN TO SEE THAT YOUR PARTY IS BONDED TOGETHER ON ISSUES OF VAST IMPORTANCE TO THE WELFARE OF THIS COUNTRY. THERE IS NOT ONE SINGLE ISSUE MORE IMPORTANT THAN MAKING THE PEOPLE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MESS IN WHICH THIS COUNTRY IS MIRED ACCOUNTABLE. UNTIL THIS IS ACCOMPLISHED THIS COUNTRY HAS NO PLACE TO GO BUT DOWN, DOWN, DOWN. IT WILL NOT MATTER ONE IOTA WHICH PARTY WINS IN NOVEMBER. PLEASE REREAD THE OATH YOU TOOK AND PERHAPS EXPLAIN TO US WHY YOU HAVE NO ADHERED TO IT.
You are all right -- Pelosi is COMPLICIT. She is complicit in all the murderous crimes bush and cheney have wrought on innocent people. PELOSI should be handcuffed and chained along with bush and cheney when the time comes.
Pelosi has become nothing less than a Stepford politician marching in lock-step in Nazi fashion behind the fascist Neocons.
She's DISGUSTING and DESPICABLE and a poor excuse for a human being.
THEY WILL ALL FALL DOWN as history has shown. I hope the time comes soon for the sake of the whole world.
Another suggested title for this article: "House Gives Impeachment the Finger".
Can someone on this blog tell me why Kucinich voted yes, to send this to committee because he is listed under the 'Yeas'????!! Why?
See the roll call vote:
http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2008/roll401.xml
It disgusts me how Pelosi thinks politics as usual is acceptable when it comes to this administration's lawlessness.
Kucinich is one of the few Democrats actually trying to uphold the law and act like a trustworthy representative of the people.
Pelosi is leader of the Sleazy Democrats-- among these are my Senators from Jersey, Menedez and Lautenberg, who both approved the Military Commissions Act, and other Bush legislation. They are incredible liars, they will say anything to get re-elected and have created a destructive culture that helped to spiral us toward the undoing of the constitution and Bill of Rights. As far as I am concerned, if they want the support of "swing voters" in the fall, then they ought to act fast and furious to clean up their act.
A presidential candidate just can't dispel all of the negativity they have created, the ill-feeling toward them that is completely justified. One candidate will not undo the destructive decisions they have been a part of, tacitly and also brazenly, right in the face of the voters who elected them.
Criticalthinktank..1:48 PM..... From "turce" on another article
Today after a bunch of us from Veterans for Peace met with John Conyers to deliver petitions from 10's of thousands we went and met with Dennis at the Capital Bldg, he explained what occurred. He made apriveleged Resolution for Impeachment, this must be sent directly to Committees. He is giving them 30 days to review, if they do not reply in kind he will bring it to the floor , he is giving us the exact calender date next week, again but this time it will contain 60 Articles, if same occurs again with 90, again with 120….
He will not stop until our Constitution is adhered to regarding Impeachment , again reminding all of the system of checks and balances. He has asked us to urge this Nation to call their Congressperson, make sure to urge them to read all35 Articles and consume the meaning, give them 30 days , ask their position, if ambivalent ask them to read again and remind them of their oath to uphold the Constitution and to not Impeach is in direct violation of their oath of office. Call Pelosi and be respectful yet firm in urging Congressman Conyers that this is a matter of our nation not allowing their leaders to become more like that of an oligarchy which our forefathers needed to be upheld, they no longer wanted a King ergo checks and balances.
Repeat all steps until we do it. Go to Dennis's site to find out more.
We have another meeting scheduled within the next few weeks with Congressman Conyers where he promised to share his intent on the matter of Impeachment.
should be stuff on YouTube and The Real News by tomorrow.
CHEERS for Conyers and Kucinich!! FIGHT FOR THE PEOPLE OF AMERICA, not for Corporations, Lobbyists (AIPAC)and other special interest groups like HALIBURTON. Either Congress works for the PEOPLE or they are out of office. We know who voted, and how you voted. IF you vote against bringing charges to Bush/Cheney..as it 'isn't important' than your hands are dirtied. You are a party to the high crimes by the White House as you 'choose to do nothing'. YOu took a VOW to the American people to Stand up for the Constitution of the people, by the people and for the people. You do not stand for Corporations...YOU STAND FOR US AND WE WILL MAKE SURE YOU WILL NOT BE RE-ELECTED IF YOU DO NOT DO OUR BIDDING!
Galen's "Die on your feet, or live on your knees" the mantra of the Spanish enemies of fascism in the 1930's, echoed my own thoughts today after reading these articles.
If all legal recourse to addressing these serious crimes continues to be shelved by the Congress and ignored by the media, then what is to be done? It seems we must wait for November elections and attempt to throw out most, if not all, of Congress, which is unlikely to happen. I'm sending Cindy Sheehan money, but what about other districts? What's happening in the rest of the country?
And what if nothing really changes in November? Obama, or McCain, will be more of the same with mildly different approaches, but walking the same path. And what if Pelosi remains? along with the others, who are now equally complicit in high crimes and misdemeanors?
Will the public continue to keep it's collective head buried in the sand while prices rise, soldiers and civilians die, and a fascist empire rages on?
Maybe the Spanish truckers, who are currently starting to shut the system down, and are igniting a truckers revolt in other parts of Europe, will inspire North American truckers to do the same. Once SOMEONE breaks the silence and takes a forceful stand, the floodgates of rage could be unleashed upon the steps of the Congress, and in the streets.
Tensions are building and it remains to be seen what will ignite an open revolt.
Let's hope that Pelosi loses her seat to Cindy Sheehan. The complicity of this Congress in allowing the Bush Administration to get away with these crimes is alarming.
THIS WILL GO FORWARD, when we have our next meetings with Conyers and Dennis it WILL be done. Regardless of Party affiliation it is not about the election this is about our Constitution and the criminals that fucked our country and troops.
30 days. Dennis told us 30 days and he will bring it to the floor again with 65 Articles, if the Judiciary does not do the right thing every 30 days it will be brought back to the House floor. Print the 65 pages of Dennis's 35 Articles with the explainations and you will get so pissed at Congress you may actually call the Judiciary. Of course Wexler agrees with Impeachment so he's cool. Waters, Jackson-Lee, Lee, Woolsey, many. call your rep. insist they read all 65 pages and absorb it and call for how thwy intend to push this in motion, of course Pelosi the complicit liar.
Here's something else to try, in addition to calling for impeachment.
Congress has a lower approval rating than Bush does. There is widespread dissatisfaction. We need to unite and rally, nationwide, against Congress, against those who sold us out. Not just on an individual basis, though.
I suggest a slogan - 'It's time to sweep out the House'.
You can add 'Don't re-elect yet again'.
We need numbers, we need bipartisanship, we need to tap into the nationwide disgust with Congress's incompetence, impotence (and inaction on impeachment).
Grab the public's eye, now. Write and blog and march and yell. Build the support for 'change'. Get a 'change reaction' going.
Get it rolling, pebble by pebble, and by election time, who knows? It could become an avalanche.
Especially, and I cannot stress this enough, support Cindy Sheehan!
I want to see in the halls of congress a hooded prisoner in Abu Ghraib as THE poster of complicity by these cowardly dems. That, and a parade of crippled and maimed Iraqi vets in wheel chairs and crutches crowding the house chambers, as a silent and powerful testimate of what war crimes and cowardice looks like.
We know the repigs only worship money, but maybe, just maybe, the coward Dems still have a conscience.
Maybe
Leahy, once a target of a Bush Co. assassination attempt using anthrax, chairs the Judiciary Committee. I wonder how he'll handle this.
