The Acceptance of Unaccountability
Now that the Democratic party has chosen a presidential nominee, it is time to take a small breather to refocus on the war in Iraq which has been generally ignored by most of the major media outlets during the primary. It's important to reincorporate the war back into the discussion being that it's the most significant issue in the general election.
Setting aside the explosive revelations from Scott McClellen, last week the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence unveiled its "Phase II" report regarding the Bush administration's purposeful manipulation of prewar intelligence that was used as a justification to invade and occupy Iraq.
The committee's chairman, Senator Jay Rockefeller, made the following statements in a press release:
"In making the case for war, the Administration repeatedly presented intelligence as fact when in reality it was unsubstantiated, contradicted, or even non-existent. As a result, the American people were led to believe that the threat from Iraq was much greater than actually existed."
"It is my belief that the Bush Administration was fixated on Iraq, and used the 9/11 attacks by al Qa'ida as justification for overthrowing Saddam Hussein. To accomplish this, top Administration officials made repeated statements that falsely linked Iraq and al Qa'ida as a single threat and insinuated that Iraq played a role in 9/11. Sadly, the Bush Administration led the nation into war under false pretenses."
As a veteran of the Iraq war this is enough to turn my fingers into fists. I don't know why exactly; it isn't like I didn't already know it. I think I just finally accepted the sad reality that there will be no accountability.
When I say "accountability" I'm not talking about what will be written in the history books. After all, Bush loyalists love to say that history will be the judge of his presidency.
I'm talking about concrete ramifications for Bush's lies that resulted in the deaths of over 4,000 US troops, an overextended & broken military, over $500 billion spent, repeated combat tours for our troops, VA hospitals flooded with veterans seeking care for physical as well as emotional injuries, and an uncountable number of dead Iraqi civilians.
Not to mention that these horrors all remain underway with no end in sight -- meaning more death, destruction, and debt.
Congressman Dennis Kucinich, to his credit, is making a strong attempt to hold this administration accountable for it's criminal activity by introducing 35 articles of impeachment in the House of Representatives. However, Kucinich's efforts are unlikely to move forward due to political fears Democrats are facing going into the election.
If full blown impeachment hearings of President Bush would result in Barack Obama losing to John McCain, then I totally concur that impeachment is a risk that is arguably not worth taking.
But is it conceivable that the American people would hold Democrats accountable in November for trying to impeach Bush for what many would describe has "high crimes and misdemeanors?" After all, the Republicans impeached President Clinton for a far less impeachable offense and they got the White House and maintained a majority of Congress through 2006.
The Republicans remain fearless and completely unconcerned with political viability. They are running in 08' on a platform of insanity that continues the occupation of Iraq, and makes Bush's tax cuts and economic policies permanent. All in the face of multiple public opinion polls indicating that nearly 80% of the American people feel that Bush has put this country on the wrong track. I just hope they (the Republicans) pay for it in November.
Here is a reality check for all those like me who had their hopes up -- George W. Bush will not be impeached. Under the circumstances all we can hope for is that Congress will contain him long enough to leave office and minimize the remaining damage he can inflict on this nation, Iraq, and possibly other countries -- like Iran.
While we stand by hoping for Congress to prevent George W. Bush from initiating any more disasters -- we must not forget that it is up to us to bring about change this election. After all, it is ours to lose.
It's disgraceful that the key players in the Bush administration who intentionally lied us into the Iraq war will not be held accountable, but it's their disgrace to bear for eternity. I'll focus on the comfort that there is light at the end of the tunnel and it's coming soon.
I think retiring GOP Congressman Tom Davis said it best:
"The Republican brand is in the trash can... if we were dog food, they would take us off the shelf."
Amen to that.
John Bruhns was awarded the combat infantry badge and was honorably discharged in 2005. He is the former legislative representative for Americans Against Escalation in Iraq.

Show AllI wonder if Rumsfeld and Tenet and Wolfowitz, Feith, Gonzalez, that whole neocon bunch, especially the ones known as "architects" of the Iraq war like Feith and Wolfowitz, I wonder if they walk around without secret service protection or bodyguards. We must be ever VIGILANT to protect or freedoms because they are NOT free. Maybe its time for a little bit of that good old time VIGILANT populist response to tyranny.
Unless there was a huge public clamor for it, no US House would ever indict a sitting president in time of war.
This is what a liberal democrat congressman from Washington state recently told our Seattle area pro impeachment group.
More on this encounter, later Saturday.
"The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder" by Vincent Bugliosi.
Pelosi and her supporters are so fucking stupid they think if they rock the boat they will loose their leverage in the up coming election. The boat is rapidly sinking and they still will not bail out the corruption. Some say if your not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.
Accountability is not a preference but a requirement in order to have peace and justice.
In a functional society the natives will march out of the mountains and kick the ass of any gringo diablo who puts politics ahead of the public interests.
I continue to hope that Obama will follow through on his promise to appoint an independent prosecutor to examine whether any acts of the administration over the last 8 years demand prosecution.
Only such a house cleaning will atone for the image the US has portrayed to the rest of the world.
We must hold the administration accountable. Impeachment is one way. But what about other legal action? Is there any other legal action that can be taken that is not automatically timed-out at the end of 2008? Please, would someone with legal knowledge on this issue please comment? Aren't people still being pursued for war crimes committed in WWII? Does anybody suggest that we should give up on that? My point is that allowing illegal acts to go unchallenged weakens the rule of law.
And the democratic party (aka the Complicit Party) is in the trash can too.
COme Nov. Anybody but the Two Parties
If you want to impeach Bush, Congress first has to repeal all or parts of several statutes (the Iraq War AUMF, the Military Commissions Act, the Patriot Act) that legalize that which impeachment proponents are calling a "high crime or misdemeanor."
Articles 33 and 34 of Dennis Kuchinich's bill wouldn't have to leap over such hurdles. Perhaps Conyers should start there - holding some hearings on the Bush White House's obstruction of the 911 Commission and misuse of the National Security Act classification powers to prevent thorough investigation of the 911 attacks. Call George Tenet as the first witness, and Donald Rumsfeld second.

Someplace on here, you should find a poster that you may print out and distribute....
It's not the nation that is accepting unaccountability. It's the 533 members of Congress who voter's elected to rein in Bush and stop the war who are at fault. Even without any meaningful public debate, more than half the nation thinks Bush deserves impeachment.
The unaccountability logjam begins in Nancy Pelosi's office according to Cindy Sheehan. She has a made a deal with the White House that they won't sic the DOJ on her and her family for their complicity in the largest landgrab outside of New Orleans; Bayview Hunter's Point and she won't impeach.
It's a Machievellian tale and we can suppose and suppose but Pelosi sits at the middle and knows.
Pelosi is sitting on Conyers and others who would move impeachment forward.
DOUBLE-F**KING BULLSHIT - this is not only not the time to, once again, say Boo and then run scared!
Now is the time to pile the f**k on! Throw everything you verything ya got, boys and girls. And that includes the MoveOns and Huffs with the bucks to get the message out to the hinterlands that the impeachment process has BEGUN! That's how you say it in the Net ads and posters and stuff - that the process of impeaching the two most anti-Americans in America has BEGUN!
F**k Big Corp Media - it's up to us to spread the word. Kids? Not busy this summer? Go print out a hundred copies of the impeachment articles and start distributing them freely in front of the supermarket. And by kids I mean everyone who calls themselves a liberal or a progressive... or a decent human being...
Like many others here I am convinced impeachment is required, that it will not hurt Democratic candidates in the least and am concerned about the motivations of those who would deny this.
"The Republican brand is in the trash can… if we were dog food, they would take us off the shelf."
If it were dog food the Republicans could eat it and choke to death.
Bruhns is twisted. Crimes must be forcefully confronted head on with truth and justice. Anything less is risky, harmful, and unacceptable.
There is no war in Iraq -- only war crimes.
That light at the end of the tunnel is a train.
The Democrats are appeasers. Bush appeasers to be exact.
Does anyone remember the VERY WARM introduction that George W. Bush gave to Nancy Pelosi when she became the speaker of the House ?
He acclaimed even her old ancestors, I right then and there, along with her 'impeachment is off the table' words knew she was an accomplice or a puppet, and in the pocket of the busshies/republipuques.
JaneM,
That's why people such as Ralph Nader deserve a chance to win. If CD wants to beg us to "vote Democrat", well it can kiss my ASS all it wants while I kick both the Dems and GOP's asses !
I am dumbfounded that the Democrats think we will hold it against them if they try to impeach - I'm holding it against them that they appear so weak and indecisive. How can we not hold them to account? How can we neglect our duty to our constitution?
The only thing I could possibly disagree with Galen (see above) is are the words "Ever since Reagan . . .". The same things have been going on for quite some time, as those who have read the works of Gore Vidal (see above) know well. The Reaganoid and the Bushistas are just more blatant and shameless about it. Ted Rall, in piece reprinted on this site a week ago, clearly laid out much of what this country has perpetrated on the world.
You can't get anyone with any kind of power or name recognition for anything unless they harm an animal
It is FACT, the party that votes and proceeds to Impeach and makes it become reality is the Party that is favored to win, proven through history. This author better read up on this subject.
BULLSHIT!!!!!!!!....THIS IS NOT THE TIME TO GIVE UP..Impeachment would give the Dems an overwhelming victory. Do not compromise..do what the Constitution MANDATES or throw it in the toilet as Bush has!!!!........A post from a previous article..thanks to "Turce".......
Today after a bunch of us from Veterans for Peace met with John Conyers to deliver petitions from 10's of thousands we went and met with Dennis at the Capital Bldg, he explained what occurred. He made apriveleged Resolution for Impeachment, this must be sent directly to Committees. He is giving them 30 days to review, if they do not reply in kind he will bring it to the floor , he is giving us the exact calender date next week, again but this time it will contain 60 Articles, if same occurs again with 90, again with 120….
He will not stop until our Constitution is adhered to regarding Impeachment , again reminding all of the system of checks and balances. He has asked us to urge this Nation to call their Congressperson, make sure to urge them to read all35 Articles and consume the meaning, give them 30 days , ask their position, if ambivalent ask them to read again and remind them of their oath to uphold the Constitution and to not Impeach is in direct violation of their oath of office. Call Pelosi and be respectful yet firm in urging Congressman Conyers that this is a matter of our nation not allowing their leaders to become more like that of an oligarchy which our forefathers needed to be upheld, they no longer wanted a King ergo checks and balances.
Repeat all steps until we do it. Go to Dennis's site to find out more.
We have another meeting scheduled within the next few weeks with Congressman Conyers where he promised to share his intent on the matter of Impeachment.
should be stuff on YouTube and The Real News by tomorrow.
A criminal culture breeds criminals.
Ever since Reagan, the US has embraced the philosophical model of 'me first, screw you'. Companies and Corporations have no oversight, and laws meant to contain their malfeasance are watered down or ignored by politicians who are owned by the corporations that they are supposed to be legislating.
Public criminality and rude behavior by 'celebrities', even to the point of shock are played daily on the airwaves for our 'entertainment'.
Music and movies that enshrine and glorify violence and criminal acts make millions of dollars for the parent corporations.
The police, who are 'supposed' to protect us, use unreasonable levels of force in even the most minor of situations, which are then protected by the courts that are supposed to address such breaches of conduct.
Public figures, politicians and sports stars, commit acts of wanton brutality, animal abuse and murder, yet escape justice in the face of overwhelming evidence. this at the same time millions of people, mostly minorities rot in prison, doing life sentences for selling pot. (The irony here is that the CIA and many 'oil service' companies STILL smuggle immense amounts of cocaine and heroin around the world and into the US.)
Is it any wonder that you can't get a mass murdering war criminal impeached?
